Shops we know and like

Here's a selection of our own favourite shops. We use them and we trust them, so that has to be a good starting point. This will provide you with a good choice of shops across the whole region.

Moonglu is a local bike shop in Ripon, North Yorkshire. The business started trading in August 2002 on the site of an existing cycle shop in Blossomgate, Ripon. Originally opened as a partnership, the shop is now solely owned by Neil Dunkley. The shop is is ideally situated, with its close proximity to the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales - and within 2 miles of our editor's house!

They're an ideal stop off point for bike parts on visits to the local mountain bike trail centres at Dalby Forest and Stainburn Forest, as well as touring cyclists and road cyclists passing through the city.
The shop covers most bases in the modern cycling world, from road and mountain bikes to the needs of commuters, racers and leisure cyclists. Neil and his members of staff are passionate about cycling and can call upon over 25 years combined experience in both the shop and the sport, Neil having raced since the age of 16, both road and off road.  They build some mean bikes and wheelsets Th

They build up some mean bikes and wheelsets. Mark knows more about fixing bikes than Delia Smith knows about cooking...take my word for it. This is a well worth a visit store, so get along or use their website.  Click the lick above for their site.

Based in the heart of the action, Whinlatter, in the Lake District, these guys are well up on what you need. Rich and Craig have more years teaching experience than you can shake a stick at. They design and deliver courses nationally. What does that mean? Well, for one you get the very best advice and service available in their shop. They know exactly what you need, and the gear that they provide can be relied upon as being  'up there' when it counts.

If you need the bike tweaking or fixing after a hard day on the hills, then this is the place to go. All of their staff are a minimum of Cytech Level 2 qualified and  were voted 9th out of 500 Cytech bike shops in 2009.

The team at Cyclewise Whinlatter are always happy to answer any questions you may have regarding the set-up and maintenance of your bike and can offer advice on the different components and parts available.  Our editor, Rob bumped into them again at Mayhem in 2011, where they had their own team. Whilst supporting a friend from British Cycling, Rob supplied Rich with a bacon butty during the night! The fact is this - if you're in the Lakes, then this is the shop for you. Well, don't take our word for it. Pop along and see.

Chevin Cycles are local to Yorkshire, with stores at Skipton, Otley and Harrogate. Voted the Independent Bike Store of the Year last year, Sanjai and the team are working hard to keep giving the best service to all their customers.

The people at Chevin ride bikes in and around the best road and trails in England, so they know their stuff.

Cadenza Cycles are based in North Yorkshire and are the very best for servicing, builds and bike fitting.

If you're after a bike and need good advice, don't always think 'off the peg'; pop along and speak with Cadenza and they'll help you to build the bike for you.

Service is their key area, and we trust them impecably.

Top banana! A bike shop that still looks like they ought to do.

Loads of bikes laid out, in all  price ranges and genres, with a great selection of top quality gear, and a busy workshop.

We like that. Oh, and the guys are more than happy to spend time chatting to you and offer advice.

Yep, they're proper riders and are even regulars at the Mega Avalanche - surviving to tell the tale.

So if you're a cyclist in or around York, pop along and speak to these guys. Go on then!

Okay, so you're in the Lakes, or at least nearby. Wilf's Cafe is a must for everyone - it's the rule. So while you're parked up, pop over to Wheelbase and spend some time looking through the gear at the largest bike shop in the UK. The staff know their stuff; look at what's on their doorstep.

Norman has a great relationship with this shop, and regularly pops in to test out their new bikes.

We thoroughly recommend these guys, and if the bike needs a fettle whilst you hit the pub after a ride in the pass, then it's sorted...go on.

And don't forget the carrot cake at Wilf's.

The Framed Bicycle Company is based in the best place possible - the foot of Mount Snowdon, at Llanberis. Alex and Chris are just living with bikes and keeping it real, developing a great business where cyclists can go along and chill out looking at bikes.

Whether or not you want a full sus mountain bike, modern road bike, or something vintage and rather special, these guys will help you out, supplying the best and then keeping it on the road and trail with excellent servicing.

If it's local knowledge you're after, they have it in abundance, so get along now or simply visit them on line by clicking here

We'll be working closely with Alex and Chris as we develop some great routes for you to ride in Wales, so keep checking out our routes pages.

Bowland Outdoors is a great place to have a browse if you're carbing up the Priory in Scorton, Lancashire. It's en route for the TroughHarrisend Fell and Jubilee Tower loops. It has an intriguing mix of cycling gear and traditional outdoor gear so you can also get horse-riding and shooting gear if you have other passions.
