Back in 2021, Maria Wilke took herself off to explore the lakes and mountains of Austria. Here’s her account of the first days adventure, along with a map and GPX file for you to take on the same ride.

I’m not complaining, but doing something; or, to put it in the original: “Nit jömmera, sondern wos tua.”

The first thought on the first morning of my vacation in beautiful Salzburgerland, while I’m still lying in bed, a cold breeze is blowing around my nose and I can hear the thick raindrops pattering on the roof under our room. Although I generally prefer to avoid getting on my bike in such heavy rain, I was still extremely motivated and drove my best friend Patrick, who accompanied me on this week-long trip, to hurry up.

Our journey through the Salzburgerland, which was supported and organised by Österreich Werbung Deutschland GmbH, started in the road bike region SalzburgerLand-Salzkammergut.

This is in turn divided into 6 individual regions:

– Region Eugendorf – Bergheim – Elixhausen
– Region Dachstein – Salzkammergut
– Region Attersee – Attergau
– Fuschlsee region
– Region Salzburger Seenland
– Region Mondsee – Irrsee

When choosing the right route, I was guided by the countless tour suggestions on the website of the road bike region, where surely every racing cyclist will find the route that suits him or her and his or her demands. I wanted to focus on the deep blue, dreamy lakes of the region surrounded by peaks (of course with the one or other coffee and cake break in one of the countless refreshment stops) and therefore decided on this tour along the Mondsee and Wolfgangsee, whereby we would actually have liked to include the circumnavigation of the Attersee. However, since any weather forecasts promised no weakening of the rain until late afternoon, 80 km should certainly be sufficient.

After an invigorating breakfast at our hotel, which, by the way, is fully geared to the needs of cyclists with a bicycle cellar, washing area, free water and many other amenities, we plunged into the floods. Thanks to the rain, we were almost alone on the small roads and bike paths and could admire the imposing and cloudy peaks and the quiet lakes lying in shades of grey. Mostly flat, but in between with some long climbs to warm up, we rolled through a landscape lying in complete silence. As much as I would have liked sunshine of course, but somehow the sight had its very special charm. The lakes seemed to run out into infinity, while a few swans blended perfectly into the grey tones of the surroundings, boats lay comfortably rocking on their buoys and we had the feeling we were the only ones on the roads that day (in the weather you couldn’t blame anyone if they preferred to stay indoors).

Unfortunately, our coffee break was cancelled because our clothes were soaked through. We would have loved to visit the beautiful spa town of Bad Ischl, including the traditional Ramsauer Café and its coffee house culture, and to enjoy a piece of cake. But as we all know, postponed is not cancelled, the region is made for cyclists, so I will definitely visit the Salzkammergut again (but this time in good weather). Still a bit frozen (despite a warm shower, which we were allowed to enjoy at the hotel), but very satisfied with the first tour of our round trip, we made our way to Fusch in the afternoon, from where it should go up to lofty heights the following day.

End of season ride with Stefan and Assault to Freedom team

Situated in the northern Italian mountain region of the Dolomiti, this epic ride takes you to several summits and is a true cycling challenge. It can however be broken down into several elements, and has lots of options for accommodation and refreshments along the way.

Stefano and the guys from Assault to Freedom completed this Italian mountains, cycling epic in one ride, as an end-of-season adventure!

Famed for the natural beauty, and a haven for adventure tourists in summer and winter, the Dolomites, or Dolomiti in Italian, is part of the Northern Italian Alps. It’s dominated by 18 majestic peaks, and its diverse landscape consists of more than 350,000 acres of jagged pinnacles, sheer rock faces, icy glaciers, deep gorges, lush forests, and verdant valleys. Within this area, there are a phenomenal 2,131 named mountains: Marmolada, which boasts Punta Penía, the highest peak of the mountain range, is nicknamed the “Queen of the Dolomites.” Because of its stunning beauty and well-preserved Mesozoic carbonate platform system that was formed 250 million years ago, the Dolomites were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009.

It’s a place that every cyclist to Italy should visit in their lifetime. This ride is an epic cycling ride through the Dolomiti mountains of Italy, from Stefano – a truly inspiring athlete and human being!

Route Information

Stats 175.56 km 5, 273 metres

Refreshments & Where to Stay
This ride starts at Canazei, which is an alpine resort, sitting near the Pordoi, Sella and Fedaia passes. It is part of the Dolomiti Super ski area, which in winter, offers numerous downhill runs. A cable car ascends to the Punta Rocca panoramic terrace on Marmolada peak, making a stop at the Marmolada Great War Museum 3000M, with displays on WWI. The Sass Pordoi Mountain has views stretching as far afield as the Swiss and Austrian Alps. As a well known holiday resort, it’s a great base and you’ll find plenty of accommodation choices and places to eat. Agorda is also not too far away, and another place to base yourself.

Along the way, there are some useful places to stay over, if you plan on riding over two days. There’s the Rifugio Passo Staulanza after 92km, and also the village of Mareson-Pecol shortly afterwards, with far more options. PLaces to eat are plenty along the way, but take hydration and snacks. Be well kitted out, as well. These are mountain roads.

Character

This ride starts and finishes in the Dolomiti region of Northern Italy, traversing numerous summits along the way. Stefano and the guys from Assault to Freedom rode it in one swoop. However, for mere mortal cyclists, it can be done as a two or three day epic Italian cycling journey. Lots of climbing, so you need to ensure that your fitness is on par for this one!

Route

From the town of Canazei, ride towards the Pordoi Pass and start the climbing. The climbing reaches 8.5% at times, and the summit is reached after 13.km.
Descend for 10 km to the resort village of Arabba, then begin the climbing once more, heading this time for the Passo Falzagarego at 50 km. You can get a snack and drink here, at the Cafe Paninoteca.
Descend now to the bridge on the road SP638, crossing the Curto River, before climbing once more.
We’re now riding to the famed Berghotel at the Passo Giau, reached after 73 km, and which is a good option for the night. You now get to descend the famed 29 hairpins of the pass, in one of the most spectacular areas of the Dolomites. If you can make one more minor climb, as you take in tis epic and long descent, you can stay the night at the Dolomiti town of Dont, which has lots of options for accommodation and places to eat. With 105 km of Dolomites cycling in your legs, this is a good idea for those not wanting a one-day epic. You can also talk about the epic Giau descent over pasta and wine.
Setting off now, the alpine village of Chiesa is next on the list, surrounded by tree lined pastures and wooden houses and chalets.
Ascending the narrow and tree lined SP347 road, after some 115 km, you are given the epic view of the Civetta mountain to your left, sublime, looking down across the Dolomites.
We now descend to Agorda, one of the most renowned and beautiful places in the Dolomiti (Dolomites); from where you can see the magnificent Mount Agner and Mount Moiazza, standing sentinel of the beautiful area around Agorda. If you don’t use this as a stop and overnight halt, then it’s definitely a place to return to with your cycling friends, one day! You have 125 km cycled, in some of the most magnificent and best cycling routes in Italy and the Dolomites. You begin to feel how special this ride is; an epic cycling route from Stefano, and probably one of the best cycling routes in the whole of the Dolomites.
The roads now head upwards again, and after 142 km, you reach the beautiful Lago di Alleghi, where you can take refreshments on board at the nearby town.
All that remains is to ascend through the town of Caprile, before summitting the Passo Fedaia-Marmolada, where you can take in the fact that you’ve cycled the highest peak in the region, and a Giro D’Italia classic.
It’s now just a short descent back to the start at Canazei.

Exploring the culture of Bavaria, on 2-wheels

For 300 kilometres, the Bavaria 5 Rivers Cycling Route flows through the magnificent countryside of beautiful Bavaria. Following the routes of the following 5 ricers: Danube, Altmühl, Naab, Vils, and Pegnitz, this is a great multi-day cycling tour in the southern Germany state. The cycling route takes you up to Nurenburg, the second largest city in Bavaia and home to numerous art treasures. From historical sites to and exciting museums to the world-famous Christkindlesmarkt, Nurenburg is well worth staying a while to explore. Why not take a rest day here, park the bike up and be a cultural tourist for a while.

The classic route starts at the World Heritage site city of Regensburg, north of Munich; however, you can in reality start it at any point along the route. Regensburg is however a place worthy of being the start and finish to such an epic cycling tour in Bavaria. With over 2000 years of history contained within its beautiful streets, over 1,500 historic listed buildings, the outstanding Stone Bridge and magnificent cathedral, you could spend days exploring Regensburg.

Stage 1

Stage 1: Regensburg to Kelheim

Along the Danube – 31km

One of the truly magnificent rivers of Europe, in every aspect, the Danube is Europe’s second-longest river and flows through an encyclopaedia of Bavarian and European history. We’ve already mentioned the World Heritage Site city of Regensburg, with medieval alleyways and beautiful buildings all around you; however, this day includes Danube river gorges and an opportunity to see the Monastery at Weltenburg, as well as exploring the Liberation Hall on arrival at Kelmheim.

Stage 2: Kelheim – Berching (52 km)

Along the Danube – 52 km

This stage takes in a wealth of history, taking you along Europe’s longest archaeological park. Limestone caves, and beautiful river gorges abound, as you cycling along this magnificent river. Highlights are the villages of Riedenburg, Dietfurt and Beilngries.

Stage 3: Berching – Nuremberg (73 km)

This is a day of industrial culture and heritage, and a chance to explore the historic canal as you head towards the city of Nuremburg. It’s an almost pan-flat cycling stage, that gently drops you into the city of Nuremburg at the end of an easy day cycling, giving you time to explore medieval Nuremburg.

Stage 4

Stage 4: Nuremberg– Amberg (75 km)

Cultural beauty & medieval history

Stage 4 is an absolutely stunning day, taking in a wealth of medieval history, as you ride along excellent tracks. Leaving Nurenburg alongside the Pegnitz River, you’re spoilt for epic sights of Bavarian culture and history. Lauf an der Pegnitz is a particularly beautiful small town along the way, with picture-postcard views and historic buildings. In particular, by the river itself is the castle, built by Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor in 1356, on the way between Prague and Nuremberg. Yes, this is a perfect spot to stop and take pictures over a coffee and cake.

Travelling then along the Vils River and into Amberg, you’re met by some of the most spectacular middle ages history in Bavaria, in this town that goes back to 1034. Is’s a beautiful place to park up the bike and to explore on foot.

Stage 5: Amberg – Regensburg (64 km)

Monastic history & art, alongside the Vils and Naab Rivers

The 64 km of this route stage allow you an opportunity to explore, as you ride along the Vils and Naab. Sites include magnificent monasteries and churches, river valleys and the sublime countryside of the flood plains. Located on the Naab River, about 25 km from Regensburg, the small village of Kallmünz has a beautifully preserved medieval centre, worth stopping off for, with its castle, medieval bridge and nearby monastery. After a short break, its an easy riverside ride back to beautiful Regensgurg and it’s World Heritage architecture and history.

Coming from a mother who took to the trails on a drop handlebar bike in the 1950s, I should have known that one day, the world would catch up! Italy is also a place close to my heart; after all, my wife believes that she’s Italian, from a century’s old triste that took place with a Roman soldier and her Yorkshire ancestors! Yes, I know. We might all be just a little Italian – how cool is that. Anyway, to important things, and gravel biking.

Strade Bianche, whilst not the oldest bike race in the world, is already a classic. It’s already one of the most exciting bike races in the world, and has been instrumental in leading drop handlebar riders onto the white roads and gravel trails all over the world. And yet, Italy is and will remain the heartland of gravel cycling; this sport , still in its infancy, and which everyone seems to be excited about.

Over the next few months, we’ll be bringing you a selection of the very best gravel bike routes in Italy. Rides across the rolling Tuscan hills, passing vineyards; gravel bike routes that take in Umbria and the historical places such as Assisi, Arezzo and Siena. Gravel bike adventures to take on the Lakes and Mountains, the Dolomites and to sweep you though the majestic Italian meadows and mountains. Yes, we want to bring you the very best gravel bike routes in Italy – with adventure built into every pedal turn!

History, culture & adventure

As we develop our selection of Italy’s best gravel rides, we’ll be focusing in specific areas of this amazing country. In the north of Italy for example, there’s the historic ‘Via degli Dei’ road, that connects Bologna and Florence through the Apennines, and which has been used since Etruscan times. This epic adventure is mostly unpaved – gravel – and starts in the heart of Bologna, climbing steeply to the sanctuary of San Luca, before heading out into the Italian hills. It’s a multi-day gravel biking adventure in Italy, of some 130 km that needs to be taken at a sedate pace; allowing you to take in breath taking Italy.

L’Eroica

All passionate cyclists, on road or gravel bike, know about the l’Eroica. The route of l’Eroica is some 209 km, between the Terre di Siena, through the Chianti, the Crete Senesi and the Val d’Orcia. The Tuscan landscapes are a fabled land for the white roads, with the perfect tracks for touring – and we’ll be bringing them to you. It’s a route of some 3/4/5 days, depending on your pace, and how you want to explore. Thankfully, with fixed and permanent signage will keep you on track, as you ride the white roads of Tuscany that are renowned across the cycling and gravel biking world.

Gravel Bike Coast to Coast Routes

We first developed our own U.K. Gravel Bike Coast to Coast Route some 4 years ago, along with Beau Smith and Callum Robinson from Voom Nutrition. When you look at the shape and the width of Italy, including across the vast mountainous northern regions around Trentino, Lombardy and Piedmont, the country is literally made for adventure – and made for the creation of a classic cycling route, from coast to coast. Then of course, travelling further down into Tuscany, you get the famous ‘white roads’ of Strade Bianche, twisting like fallen ribbons across the beautiful rolling hills of Tuscany. Add to this, the world-renowned Italian culture and the nation’s passion for cycling, and it seems obvious to develop a world leading gravel biking route from the Adriatic to the Mediterranean; a classic Italian gravel bike coast to coast cycling route. Better still – how about a few vineyards along the way!

This idea had been burning within our hearts for some time here at Pedalnorth, and we just needed a spark to initiate it.

Recommended halts

Cattolica and Rimini both have a great choice of cycling friendly hotels, with good storage, tools etc and superb rooms at a reasonable price.
Our first suggested overnight halt is the small, historic town on Nostafeltria, with it’s small piazza’s and cobbled streets. It’s at the 50km point, as we believe that you should have time to enjoy Italy on this ride!
After a ride of 80km, the quiet Tuscany town of Bibbiena awaits you, with it’s narrow streets and fortified towers from the 10th and 11th century.Nearby too, there are a few small castles to explore, if time allows.
At the 210km mark, Florence awaits you.We recommend spending a day off here and make the lost of your trip into the cultural haven that Florence is. After all, you’ve over halway already!
At the 265km point,Poggibonsi is reached and history awaits. There’s lots for the visitor to explore in terms of historical and architectural sites, like the Fortezza Medicea di Poggio Imperiale, the Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta, and the Convento di San Lucchese.
After a ride of some 70km, the beautiful small town of Chianni in Tuscany awaits, with narrow, winding streets and a quiet ambience.
A short day is left now, with only 45km to Livorno on the mediterranean coast. Time a plenty to rest and relax and take in the scenery, having cycling some 380km across Italy, on some excellent gravel roads – including the white roads of Tuscany.

Take a Ride on the Wild Side

Conversations with cycling friends across Europe renewed our enthusiasm to try and develop a similarly challenging route to our succesful U.K. gravel bike coast to coast ride, taking in the history, culture and beauty that lies between the Italian Adriatic and the Med, with a jaunt along the white roads of Tuscany, and a cultural visit to Florence.

Our initial conversations also discussed how we might take things further, and then develop our own epic Italian road cycling coast to coast route, tackling some of the famed passes, and maybe taking riders into the beautiful cycling roads of the Italian lakes and mountains – yes, with a vineyard or two along the way! In effect, we talked about numerous adventure rides, and longer term, we believe that Italy deserves two great gravel based routes across it – one in the centre – which we are currently working on – and one in the north, skirting the lower hills, lakes and mountains of this beautiful country.

As of November 2025, we have a defined draft of the proposed main route, in a state where we will be ready to ride and check out the detail of the various roads and tracks, and establish the viability and how it knits together. It’s still a work in progress, but if you’d like to help us out by riding sections and emailing us, we’d be extremely grateful. Our plan now is to ride the route in its entirety as soon as possible, and to make the necessary changes. If you do ride the current mapped options, then please bare in mind that we haven’t yet given these a final ride and check over. The decision to ride it at this point is down to you alone. Hopefully, we’ll have it all finalised quite soon.

With lots of emails, calls and research, and endless hours of mapping and checking our ideas, we believe that we have a route worth riding – and what we believe will become a classic Italian gravel bike coast to coast ride. It’s a route designed to maximise your cycling adventure, culture and history, and to take you to some of the finest gravel biking trails in Italy, with Pedalnorth.

And, as for the second part of the project, mentioned earlier; in 2026 we will be developing a northern Italy – Lakes & Mountains – option, taking in the epic Italian cycling passes, with a road and off-road version. Yes, over the next year or so, we’ll develop 2 epic cycling routes that take adventure cyclists across some of the best terrain and most beaitiful landscapes in the world – Italy!

Cycling the Italian Coast to Coast

It’s time for you to take a first look at the all-new, Italian gravel bike coast to coast route. We’ll be detailing the places to stay along the route(s), accompanied by maps and gpx files to download, and lots of other useful information for gravel bikers and road cyclists alike. Our epic adventure cycling trip along the rugged and scenic trails of Italy is currently planned to start close to Rimini on the Adriatic Sea Coast, before heading inland towards Florence and the dusty white roads. After visiting several historical locations and overnight halts, where you can take in the history, you once again cycle towards the sea – this time, Mediterranean coast via the historic city of Luca.

Our Italian Lakes and Mountains gravel bike option is yet to be determined. In terms of the first route across Italy by gravel bike, we believe that we’ve put together one of the most beautiful off-road cycling routes in the world, and certainly, one of the very best gravel bike routes in the world.

We’re really excited to announce that we’ll be working closely with the team at TRIADA and the ‘Trilogy of the Trails’, to develop a 4-day epic off-road route for gravel riders and mountain bikers. The route will explore the amazing trails in and around Paltinis and Avrig, and the Fagaras Mountains (part of the Carpathians), taking you into the vast mountain forests, the open mountain meadows, and riding in singletrack heaven beneath some of the beautiful mountain peaks of Transylvania.

With Romania’s oldest mountain resort at Paltinis as the base and starting point for this ride, being only 30km from the World Heritage city of Sibiu, you’ll be able to fly here from all over the world, to take on the Trails of Triada’ at your own relaxed pace, all year long – dependent on the mountain weather of course! Yes, it’s an opportunity for gravel bikers and mountain bikers from all over the world, to challenge yourself on unique mountain trails, as you ride a future classic route, on your own epic adventure in Transylvania!

A Route for all Riders

We want this new off-road ride to be accessible to all levels of rider, and for both gravel bikes and mountain bikes. As we develop our route, we’ll be taking time to ensure that there’s sections to take you onto your own specific adventure option – chilled out trial options and some epic technical options too.

The benefit of riding here in Transylvania is that we have the largest undiscovered area of mountain forests and trails in Europe. We’re rightly described as Europe’s last great wilderness, and we’re also home to amazing cultural centres such as Sibiu – a magical, medieval city, and one of the most beautiful small cities in Europe.

We want to include ideal gravel bike specific sections, making sure that you can ride and smile all day long – for 4 whole days. And, we’ll be bringing you a selection of the very best accommodation options, trail support and local guides too. ‘On the trails of TRIADA’ will be a truly epic challenge, that will promote this beautiful mountain region, and bring it to the attention of more people, seeking to rediscover life on 2-wheels!

The Sweet Sound of Singletrack Heaven

There’s nothing finer on a mountain bike, than sweeping along sweet singletrack trails, with the rocky ground crunching beneath the wheels; or swooping through the forests on tight and twisting trails that seem endless. Thankfully, both Paltinis and Avrig have hundreds of kilometres to explore; all within easy reach of Sibiu as a great travel and logistics hub. Both Paltinis and Avrig have great accommodation options too, for all budgets.

As we develop this new and exciting project, in time for spring 2025, we’ll also be looking at the option to add an introduction ride day, making the tour a 5-day ride direct from the centre of Sibiu, warming up on the rolling trails that take you alongside the scenic Romanian countryside, as you climb into the mountains and head to Paltinis and the start of the epic ‘Trails of TRIADA’ multi-stage adventure route.

Inspiring, Encouraging & Influencing Adventure

Working closely with the TRIADA team and Tudor Oprea, this 4-day route will ensure that we continue to inspire, encourage and influence the next generation of cyclists seeking adventure. We also want to promote the amazing culture, history and countryside of Transylvania and Sibiu County – one of the most spectacular areas of Europe. The ‘Trails of TRIADA’ route will actively promote a healthy lifestyle, and encourage people to explore the countryside in a balanced way, promoting sustainability tourism. We’ve only got one world, so let’s look after it and see what it has to offer us all. Take a trip to Transylvania in 2025, and ride with Tudor and the team in Europe’s last great wilderness!

Tailfin Alloy Rack with Pannier Mounts

Leading the way on adventure cycling bike racks

Tailfin’s minimalist racks have been around for half a dozen years now, and in that time they’ve gone from being something of a curiosity to a regular sight among bikepackers and long distance gravel riders. Intrigued by this blurring of the lines between bikepacking and traditional rack-and-panniers touring, we decided to try out their alloy option, with small pannier bags, on a tour of the Outer Hebrides.

Fitting is straightforward even when carried out on a rainy campsite, as ours was. At the lower end, it can be fitted directly to frame bosses at the rear dropout, or if you haven’t got those you can mount it on the axle and there are a range of adapters for QRs and all flavours of thru axle. At the top it’s secured with a strap around the seatpost. With various adapters and extenders available it might be a slight exaggeration to say it can be fitted to any bike but it’s not far off. The seat post fitting, frame bosses and thru axle options, mean that this carrier can be fitted to your carbon bike frame too – meaning that we’re all now potential adventure seekers.

After the initial installation, if you’re prepared to leave the almost unnoticeable little lower pegs on the bike you can take the rack off and put it back on in a matter of seconds. When I first laid eyes on one, I assumed this would be its primary appeal; to owners of sleek racing machines of one kind or another who occasionally felt the need to carry a bit extra for a spot of light touring or whatever. Interestingly though it seems to have been most enthusiastically adopted by the bikepacking fraternity. I’ve no data on this and it may just be the circles I move in; but a quick scan of the many ‘Rigs of the XXXX- Divide’ galleries online suggest there’s some truth in it. I’ll come back to this later, but for now back to the Hebridean rain.

A Hebridean adventure test

The trip was a five day tour, roughly following the Hebridean way, adjusted to account for the vagaries of Calmac ferries and the logistical challenges of getting back to an Oban car park in time to fulfil various obligations the following week. We carried lightweight camping and sleeping gear and only the barest minimum of cooking facilities (for tea, mainly).

We had the alloy version of the rack with the built in pannier mounts. If I was buying one, I think the extra cost of the carbon fibre version for a few grams of weight saving would be unjustified given that I’d be loading the thing with a few kilos of baggage anyway. Also, I’m old enough to harbour a few, probably unjustified, superstitions about the suitability of carbon for load bearing application in a knockabout environment. Likewise the pannier mounts; I can’t see the point of not having them; they’re pretty unobtrusive and they give you another loading option. Admittedly you do have to use Tailfin’s dedicated side pannier (various sizes from 5L-22L) and there are 3-pack mounts on the fork legs for stuff sac or Nalgene bottle cages, but still. We did in fact use the Tailfin panniers, and in many ways they were the best part of the system (see below). We didn’t use the dedicated Tailfin top bag, largely because we didn’t have one, instead strapping a tent to the rack platform. Which seemed as good a use of the space as any.

For the first two days we rode in more or less constant rain. Now, in my experience, if it rains long enough and hard enough, everything will get wet. Having said that, one of the only pockets of dryness in those first couple of days were the side panniers. Made of Hypalon and nylon fabric and a rolltop closure, they kept out the Scottish weather when the seams and zips of our other bags eventually let in varying amounts of moisture. Even when everything else is damp and clammy, there’s deep joy in a dry change of socks. The panniers attach using Tailfin’s own X-Clamp hooks. These are super sturdy and seemed maybe a little over engineered at first glance, but they hold the bags immovably against the rack even when they’re heavily packed. The locking mechanism holds the solidly in place and there was no trace of movement even on the roughest terrain we encountered.

A significant step-up in load-carrying abilities

One of the problems with reviewing decent cycling kit is that when it works well it just works and if it does it’s job well part of that is being unnoticeable, just getting on with it without any fuss. That’s pretty much the case here; the Tailfin rack system carries a decent amount of stuff, keeps it dry, doesn’t rattle or sway and showed no sign of damage despite a fair bit of being thrown about and generally abused. From a bikepacking perspective a more interesting question might be why one would prefer this system to the more usual seatpack or indeed a traditional rack and panniers. From its earliest days, bikepacking was almost defined by eschewing racks to carry luggage. Racks and panniers were held to be cumbersome, heavy, rattly, insecure and altogether unsuitable for off-road touring. More recently manufacturers and riders have been adopting a hybrid approach.

As well as Tailfin, companies like Revelate Designs, Ortlieb and Restrap produce small minimalist panniers aimed at off road touring riders. These tend to sacrifice some of the capacity and practicality of traditional setups in favour of light weight, smaller profiles and rattle free fitting, but still represent a significant step up in load carrying capability over standard bikepacking bags.

So if you’re a bikepacker who tends to carry a lot of gear, maybe for cold conditions, or on longer trips then the Tailfin system makes a lot of sense. While the rack does limit you the use of Tailfin’s own bags, at least in terms of panniers, it also has some significant plus points over more standard racks. For a start its sleek aesthetics mean it doesn’t look too industrial or spoil the lines of even the sleekest machines.

In fact, many months after the Hebrides trip ours is still on the bike. It’s been used for shopping, commuting and the odd day ride and performed solidly and unobtrusively throughout. It’s so unobtrusive it’s never seemed worth the bother of taking it off. Ant, it looks kind of stylish on a bike – especially one made for bikepacking. It’s as though the two were meant to go together. Conversely if you do want to take it off it can be done in seconds (yes, I’m really that lazy). With additional sets of fittings too, it’s super easy to swap it between bikes. So the same piece kit can be used to extend your bikepacking luggage one day and transform your carbon road bike into a light tourer the next. All in all, Tailfin have done a great job and we really can’t fault how they’re redefining the possibilities for ordinary cyclists to be able to join the bikepacking community.

The market town of Northallerton is the county town for North Yorkshire and sits perfectly between the Dales and Moors National Parks. It has ample accommodation options, god places to eat and a great local bike shop too.

Nearby Osmotherley is a gem of a village and leads you to epic riding and wonderful views. The Moors aren’t simply about wild and barren heather, there’s beautiful valleys and lush wooodlands and forests too. We use part of the Moors to Sea route as we approach Robin Hoods Bay, giving you the best opportunity to see the varied landscapes of this quite extraordinary part of Yorkshire.

Refreshments & Where to Stay

Northallerton is the obvious choice, with ample options for all budgets. There’s also a great Youth Hostel at nearby Osmotherley, then further along at Helmsley too, which is the home of THmas the Baker, so cakes and sandwiches abound in and around the quaint market square. Further along is the famed Lion Inn on the Rosedale moor, and the coast has lots on offer, including great fish and chips!

Character

This section has steep climbs and epic descents along the way, as well as useful tarmac sections that avoid poor trails for the gravel bike and which will help you speed along to better trails. You’ll need to follow the gpx and watch your navigation, especially on the woodland sections. However, the trails are perfect for gravel riding and you’ll ease along to the coast.

Route

Take the quiet lanes and tracks from Northallerton that avoid the busier main road, and head towards the village of Bullamoor and the Moors.
Cross the A19 with care, then ride to the village of Nether Silton, before climbing gently through the forest and onto the Drovers Way.
Once on the Drovers Way, turn right and climb up to the ridge. After a few short miles of smooth riding, take the bridleway that drops you to the hamlet of Hawnby, then take the trail that weaves through the tree lined valley to beautiful Rievaulx Abbey.
From Rievaulx, climb the steep road that joins the main road and speeds you down into Helmsley, where ample refreshments await. Our personal favourite is Porters Cafe and their lemon meringue pie.
A bridleway off Carlton Road at Helmsley then leads you northwards across meadows towards forests, before a track is taken eastwards, leading you through trees on super tracks.
A series of quiet road sections and super moorland tracks lead you onwards to the Lion Inn in Rosedale.

Leaving the Lion Inn, initially head north, before skirting around upper Rosedale and then dropping south to Rosedale Abbey.
Now it’s time to head to Cropton Forest, heading to more forest trails at Broxa. Tracks now lead over the North Yorks Moors Railway and scenes of steam trains. Once over the railway, the epic landscape of the Hole of Horcum awaits, before entering Dalby Forest, where the visitor centre has a great cafe stop and bike shop.
The Moors and Coast route now helps to guide us, through meadowland and trees that rise and fall, before picking up the easy former railway line at Scalby on the edge of Scarborough, where it provides a cinder track gives easy riding all the way north, to Robin Hoods Bay and the sea!
