Gravel adventure in the Austrian Tyrol

This tough but beautiful ride of 54 km takes you through magnificent scenery in the Austrian Tyrol, exloring the gravel tracks in the Tannheim Valley of the Austrian mountains. The route takes you up past the Haldensee (lake) and climbs the epic Krinnenspitze for amazing mountain views.

Forests and alpine meadows mix with 14% climbs and descents on this Tyrolean gravel route, requiring good fitness and bike skills. Yet, the rewards are well worth the effort, as yu explore the beauty of the Tannheim Valley and alpine scenery.

Route Information

Stats: 54 km 1,675 metres

Refreshments & Where to Stay: The Tanheim Valley has numerous options for accommodation at all price points. Likewise, places to eat are easy to locate and the food choices are excellent.

Character: Tough and steep, with a technical descents. Some bike-hiking might be found on the steeper climbs, but take the climbs as a challenge. The trails are excellent gravel. Do not tackle if your actual fitness and skill level is not up to this. However, if you’re ready for the adventure, it is an epic ride!

Route

The route – albeit seeming reasonable in length, is a tough but rewarding day in the mountains of the Tyrol. Excellent fitness is required, as is the ability to carry out trailside repairs for yourself.

Starting off from Schattwald, the route climbs initially, before dropping you down towards Tannheim.
Haledensee is soon reached, as you skirt this picturesque lake in the mountains.
Then, after 17.9km – at Nesselwangle – a steep series of switchbacks lead you upwards for 4.5 km, before more descending and riding through the trees on excellent tracks that rise and fall randomly.
At 43km you reach the quaint village of Berg, and its wealth of tradiational chalets and farms. The climbing begins once more, as the road takes you into the hills and trees. Tracks wind there way around the valley, before dropping you back onto the valley road at Schattwald where refreshments can be taken if needed, whilst you enjoy the epic views across the valley.

An epic adventure off-road in Switzerland

Switzerland is the home of adventure and Grindelwald is at the heart of the action! With epic scenery and some of the best off-road trails for cyclists, it’s a haven for both mountain bikers and gravel bikers alike.

This route takes you on a 3-day adventure around the lower meadows and hills of some epic mountains: the Monch, the Eiger and the Jungfrau and to the beautiful mountain Lake Brienz, before heading back to Grindelwald. The JUngfrau Tourism experts suggest a 3-day trip, and we agree with them.

This epic gravel bike route in the Swiss mountians starts and ends in Grindelwald, at the foot of the iconic Eiger and in the shadow of its historic north face. On the three defined stages, you’ll ride through some of the most amazing mountain scenery in the world and stay in beautiful villages. The route runs entirely along official, well-signposted bike and cycle paths, and by using the GPX files on this page, makes the route navigation esy to follow.

Stats each day

Day one: Grindelwald to Murren – 30 km, 1200 metres ascent

Day two: Mürren to Meiringen – 60 km, 800 metres ascent

Day three: Meiringen to Grindelwald – 30 km, 1500 metres ascent

Refreshments & Where to Stay: The Grindelwald and Jungfrau region are well versed in where to stay and what to do. Simply contact their tourism offices and they’ll give you great advice on where to stay and where to eat. Booking the tour itself, then all will be catered for anyway!

Character: Tough and steep, this is a ride for those with experience in the hills and a god level of fitness. However, if you’re ready for the adventure, it is an epic ride!

Route

Day 1

The ride starts in Grindelwald, using cycle route 61 out of the valley and along the black Lütschine to Zweilütschinen. Once here, you change to the Alpine Route 1 to Lauterbrunnen. Arriving at Lauterbrunnen, the second climb begins, as you ride on the signposted bike trail 450 in the direction of Mürren.

From Mittelberg, leave the signposted bike route and ride on an asphalt path along the railway line directly to Mürren. It’s now time to enjoy a car-free, unspoilt panoramic mountain village, sitting at the foot of the Schilthorn and with breathtaking views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau – well worth the gravel grind.

Day 2

Today, you have 60 km to ride and 800 metres of ascending, so it’s aday to take your time and to enjoy the scenery. Of course, you can try to be epic and ride continuously from day one. However, we see that as a foolhardy way of exploring the Alps.

From the village of Mürren, ride back on bike route 450 along small and sometimes steep asphalt and alpine paths via the villages of Gimmelwald to Stechelberg. It’s now time to roll silently into the magical Lauterbrunnen Valley passing by the iconic Trümmelbach Falls. After Lauterbrunnen, you can choose to ride on the right side of the river on forest tracks and easy trails, Alpine Bikeroute 1 (GPS track), or you can ride on the left side of the river and stay on the road.

From Zweilütschinen, bike route 1 leads along the right bank of the Lütschine to Wilderswil and through Interlaken to the northern shore of Lake Brienz. From here, bike trail 451 leads to Brienz on partly paved and partly unpaved paths with constant ups and downs, always with a beautiful view of the deep blue Lake Brienz.

Once in the village of Brienz, it’s a change to the Aare cycle path no. 8 and the final few kilometres of the day , riding quietly along the right bank of the Aare for a much deserved rest and refreshments.

Day 3

Alpine Bike Route No. 1 starts you off today, as we head back to Grindelwald. Along the way, the route cycles past the legendary Reichenbach Falls, before the village of Rosenlaui is reached after a further 400 metres in altitude. If hunger and great food is necessary, then, after a further 100 metres in altitude, the beautiful Chalet Schwarzwaldalp beckons with culinary delights – a place that is taken on the organised ride on the Jungrau website, and a place that we also recommend.

Your route then moves onwards to the highest point of the day, the Grosse Scheidegg, with epic views all around you, before you begin the amazing descent back to Grindelwald, with the mountains standing sentinel all around.

A Weekend at La Reine Women’s Cycling Festival

When I first rolled into Gstaad, I was running on three hours of sleep, a stiff neck from a 10-hour drive, and nerves from a last-minute wheel change on my bike. Glamorous? Not exactly. But if there’s one thing women in cycling know how to do — it’s show up, no matter what.

I had driven all the way from the Dolomites, picking up my boyfriend in Milan along the way. We arrived in the Swiss Alps late at night. I was exhausted but buzzing with excitement. The event was calling. At 2 a.m., I finally closed my eyes… only to wake at 5 a.m., hoping my new wheel setup would hold up. Luckily, the amazing on-site mechanics came to my rescue and got my TIME Scylon dialed in just in time. And that’s how La Reine began.

The Ride That Felt Like Home

La Reine isn’t your typical granfondo. It’s strictly women, beautifully tough, and utterly inspiring.

This year, more than 500 women lined up for the challenge — a stunning 140 km route with over 3,000 meters of elevation gain through the Alps. The ride itself was gorgeous — alpine climbs, sweeping valleys, and that quiet Swiss magic you can’t quite describe. But what truly made it unforgettable was the energy. We weren’t racing. We were riding together — some fast, some steady, some stopping for photos, some pushing their limits. There was space for everyone, and no need to prove anything. That freedom — to just ride as you are — is powerful.

A Tapestry of Stories on Two Wheels

What struck me most at La Reine wasn’t just the landscape — it was the women. So different, yet so united by a shared love of the ride.

There were women from all walks of life — engineers, mothers, artists, students, doctors and CEOs — each with their own reasons for being there. Some had been riding for decades, others had only recently found cycling through a friend or during lockdown. There were fearless solo travelers who’d crossed borders with panniers and maps, and women who’d never done a mountain climb until that day. Some rode with power and precision, others with joy and curiosity. One woman talked about racing with the strategy of a pro — another told me she just wanted to prove to herself she could finish. Some rode in silence, soaking in the scenery, others chatted, laughed, and sang on the climbs.

It was a reminder that cycling isn’t one type of woman. It’s a canvas for so many voices, stories, and identities. And when we come together — from different cultures, ages, and backgrounds — the result is something incredibly rich and inspiring.

We’re Not “Just Women on Bikes”

We’re often boxed in as niche, or “cute” riders because brands now offer smaller sizes and pastel kits. Yes, we love good design and a saddle that actually fits — but we’re also fierce, competitive, and deeply passionate. It’s not about women trying to ride like men. It’s about women riding like women — and redefining what that looks like. That means power, elegance, resilience, and community.

And right now, we’re in a powerful moment for women’s cycling. Just look at the Tour de France Femmes — it’s not the same distance or duration as the men’s race, and that’s OK. It’s not easier. It’s not harder. It’s different, and equally intense. The strategy, the climbs, the breakaways — it’s a different kind of battle. And it’s beautiful.

Each year, we’re seeing more media coverage, more fans at the roadside, and more young girls dreaming big. That’s how progress looks.

My TIME on the Road

My TIME Scylon carried me through Gstaad’s climbs with precision and confidence. I didn’t overthink the tech that day — I just rode. That’s the magic of a bike that fits your riding style so well: it becomes part of your rhythm. Quietly strong, just like the women around me.

Why This Matters

Back in 2021, Maria Wilke took herself off to explore the lakes and mountains of Austria. Here’s her account of the first days adventure, along with a map and GPX file for you to take on the same ride.

I’m not complaining, but doing something; or, to put it in the original: “Nit jömmera, sondern wos tua.”

The first thought on the first morning of my vacation in beautiful Salzburgerland, while I’m still lying in bed, a cold breeze is blowing around my nose and I can hear the thick raindrops pattering on the roof under our room. Although I generally prefer to avoid getting on my bike in such heavy rain, I was still extremely motivated and drove my best friend Patrick, who accompanied me on this week-long trip, to hurry up.

Our journey through the Salzburgerland, which was supported and organised by Österreich Werbung Deutschland GmbH, started in the road bike region SalzburgerLand-Salzkammergut.

This is in turn divided into 6 individual regions:

– Region Eugendorf – Bergheim – Elixhausen
– Region Dachstein – Salzkammergut
– Region Attersee – Attergau
– Fuschlsee region
– Region Salzburger Seenland
– Region Mondsee – Irrsee

When choosing the right route, I was guided by the countless tour suggestions on the website of the road bike region, where surely every racing cyclist will find the route that suits him or her and his or her demands. I wanted to focus on the deep blue, dreamy lakes of the region surrounded by peaks (of course with the one or other coffee and cake break in one of the countless refreshment stops) and therefore decided on this tour along the Mondsee and Wolfgangsee, whereby we would actually have liked to include the circumnavigation of the Attersee. However, since any weather forecasts promised no weakening of the rain until late afternoon, 80 km should certainly be sufficient.

After an invigorating breakfast at our hotel, which, by the way, is fully geared to the needs of cyclists with a bicycle cellar, washing area, free water and many other amenities, we plunged into the floods. Thanks to the rain, we were almost alone on the small roads and bike paths and could admire the imposing and cloudy peaks and the quiet lakes lying in shades of grey. Mostly flat, but in between with some long climbs to warm up, we rolled through a landscape lying in complete silence. As much as I would have liked sunshine of course, but somehow the sight had its very special charm. The lakes seemed to run out into infinity, while a few swans blended perfectly into the grey tones of the surroundings, boats lay comfortably rocking on their buoys and we had the feeling we were the only ones on the roads that day (in the weather you couldn’t blame anyone if they preferred to stay indoors).

Unfortunately, our coffee break was cancelled because our clothes were soaked through. We would have loved to visit the beautiful spa town of Bad Ischl, including the traditional Ramsauer Café and its coffee house culture, and to enjoy a piece of cake. But as we all know, postponed is not cancelled, the region is made for cyclists, so I will definitely visit the Salzkammergut again (but this time in good weather). Still a bit frozen (despite a warm shower, which we were allowed to enjoy at the hotel), but very satisfied with the first tour of our round trip, we made our way to Fusch in the afternoon, from where it should go up to lofty heights the following day.

Time for some classic Alps cycling

Here’s two absolutely amazing routes from Mary Wilke, taking in this beautiful area of the Alps, close to the border between Italy and Switzerland,and with epic views of lakes and mountains. If you’re looking for a great weekend riding in the Alps, then this excursion could be the ideal mini vacation for epic bikes rides.

Checking out the weather forecast for the weekend – Rain, wind and temperatures around 10 degrees from Friday until Sunday, really no sign of spring. But it must be possible, to find some spring somewhere in Europe! He who seeks, will find it, sun and lovely spring temperatures on the south side of the alps! So me and Christian don’t need long time to think about, what to do: We‘ve booked a hotel room and on Friday afternoon, we started our trip to Ticino in Switzerland.

Our trip leads us to the wonderful Lago Maggiore, where I’d already spent some unforgettable days on my bike. A real sunny-weather hotspot with many beautiful climbs in a mediterrean landscape between palms and blooming flora.

After crossing the 18 km long St. Gotthard road tunnel the weather really changed from a grey sky and rain on the north side to blue sky and sunshine on the south side – Jackpot! Just a few more kilometers direction south and we reached our destination Locarno as our starting point for the planned trips.

With good mood and full of anticipation we prepared our bikes, filled your jerseys with some bars and after putting on helmets and shoes, we started our trip – Short-Short while it was getting already warmer and warmer. After a few kilometers the climb up to Malesco started, the peaceful road slightly ascended along the Centovalli with its torrent Melezza. The sun provided us with vitamine D and we can’t get enough of the beauty of the snowcovered summits around us. We’ve crossed the impressive Ponte della Vellascia, the Madonna del Sangue church in Re until we reached the top of Piano di Sali after crossing Malesco.

We enjoyed a great descent through wild nature on small roads along the mountain – Not much space for oncoming traffic so the descending inceased attention. But after all we’ve enjoyed the long and winding ride down to Cannobio. Unfortunately it was not possible to continued our trip as planned because of a hard traffic accident on the road along the lake, which is the only route to Cannero, where our next climb up to Piancavallo should begun.

So we changed our plan, listened to our tummies and decided to take a break by the lake to enjoy some delicious Italian ham and cheese with one or two good coffees and thought about alternatives to continue our cycling day – One climb is definitely not enough! And suddenly I remembered the old Ponte dei Salti in the Valle Verzasca above Locarno, which would be always worth a visit with its great and impressive dam!

No sooner said than done, we continued to exploit the last sunny hours of this great day. And while the sun began to set, we finally reached Lavertezzo and the ancient stone-bridge with its typical two arches under which the crystal clear mountain water flowed through. Also, on Sunday the sun offered us a sunny spring day – We’d planned the ascent up to Alpe di Neggia,thereafter the ascent to Arosio and crossing the Monte Ceneri to get back home to Locarno afterwards.

On our way up to Alpe di Neggia we had to master 12 kilometers with an average gradient of 9,5 %. Again and again we got a breathtaking view down to the lake while passing blooming Magnolia trees and palms. Definitely, spring has already arrived here in the south! With every serpentine, the vegetation changed into a deciduous and coniferous forest, until we even had some snow around us on 1100 m above sea level.

After the descent, there was not much time to relax. Already after some kilometers along the lake, we started the climb in Colmegno up direction Arosio, nearly 28 kilometers, more or less steep road and with every kilometer my legs got heavier and heavier. Christian himself was in best condition while doing one interval after the other, meanwhile I was happy, that I kept on breathing To prevent a imminent bonk, we decided to take a sandwich-break in the midday sun to handle the last meters in altitude.

After a damn steep descent over 23 serpentines down to Greavesano, I was definitely done and tried to fuel-up with good old chocolate bars and coke to survive to last elevation up to Monte Ceneri. But the long, straight and slightly ascending road with strong headwind on it seemed never to end. Fortunately I had someone with me who was still apperently full of energy, so I tried to hide from the wind as good as possible and finally, we arrived on top of that last ascent of this trip.

For sure, such a wonderful weekend needs a fitting way to be rounded off. So we didn’t get stressed by the travelers returning home through the south portal of the St. Gotthard road tunnel and the arising traffic jam and decided to enjoy some Latte Macchiatos to review two amazing days on our bikes. The warm evening sun was still shining onto our faces, the lake in front of us was glistening and the summits of the mountains were illuminated by the last golden light of the day.

Lucarno has ample choices for accommodation, as do the nearby lakeside villages. In terms of refreshments, take supplies along with you; there will also be lots of places along each route to refresh you. Al Porto Café Lago Locarno is a good place for coffee and eating after the ride, with views across the lake.

Character

These are both epic mountains days, with lots of climbing and descending. Make sure that your bike is prepped and that you have right kit with you, including tools and tubes. Fitness is key to rides like this in the Alps, and so prepare properly and you’ll be able to enjoy the fantastic scenery more.

Furka Pass Cycling Route

Sean Connery took to these roads in the classic Bond Movie ‘Goldfinger’, and now you too can, as you ride through spectacular scenery and enjoy the breathtaking mountain roads of Switzerland.

Refreshments are avaliable along the route, and at Innertkirchen there’s opportunity for good food before the final climb. The small village of Wassen has ample accommodation options for you to choose from.

Character

A tough but rewarding days riding in the Alps, taking on these 3 epic road passes, and finishing with a superb descent back to Wassen.

Route

The Furka Pass is a truly legendary Swiss mountain pass that gained fame after it was featured in the James Bond movie “Goldfinger” from 1964. Bond raced an Aston Martin DB5 against a Ford Mustang, with epic images on screen as they climbed this scenic road, located in the Uri/Valais region of Switzerland. All these years later, this timeless landscape is still a draw for both drivers and cyclists.

Thankfully, the Furka Pass is situated close to other scenic roads, meaning that you can tick off a few classic climbs in one ride. If you approach it from north, you might want to ride over the Grimsel Pass before arriving at the bottom of Furka. However, we’ve started this ride from the south, riding from Wassen and in through Realp before some serious climbing begins.

As you reach the now closed Hotel Belvedere, which still stands, take a moment to enjoy the spectacular view and to grab a coffee. Then, it’s time for more climbing, as you look down at the valley and Rhone River that cuts through it.

It’s now time to tackle the Grimsel Pass, with a short descent before you begin. Then, drop downs long mountain descent to Innertkirchen, where you can take a break and maybe grab food, before the climbing begins again. The final climb is the Susten Pass, at a height of 2260 metres, connecting Innertkirchen to Wassen, with a 300 metre tunnel along the way.

Enjoy the views from the summit, before a long descent to Wassen and a well earned celebratory meal.

A short but steep road cycling route in the hidden area of the Italian mountains

A Classic Road Cycling Route in the mountains on the border between the Italian Lakes & Mountains and Switzerland. Albeit in Switzerland, we’ve listed this within our Italian mountains section in order to merge it into a trip to Italy, staying in the border ten of Lugano.

A trip I will remember forever – A rollercoaster of emotions and landscapes.

But let me start with the key figures. Lago del Narèt is a reservoir, which is the source of the river Maggia and is located in the northern Italian part of Switzerland (Canton of Ticino) in a height of 2311 m a.s.l.

The climb up to Lago del Narèt is the paved road with the most elevation gain in Switzerland, from start to finish, we had 70,5 kms of climbing with an elevation gain of nearly 2100 m

Distance and ascent: 127 km and 2,482 metres of climbing

Route
Our gpx starts the route in the small town of Giubiasco, north of Lugano, with ample facilities.

1. It was a sunny and warm day, no clouds were seen and the sky was stealth blue. Best conditions for a hard and long but also impressive day on the bike.

Ticino is characterized by it’s souther climate, we were surrounded by palms and the typical smell and handled the first elevation gain through the beauty of Valle Maggia, until the road leads further away from the river and the traffic became less.

2. We crossed one beautiful and small mountain village after another and noticed, how the landscapes turned more and more from a southern climate to a deciduous forest. The real and hard climb starts nearly at kilometre 40 – Serpentine and steep sections characterised the beginning of suffering.

3. At kilometre 58, we crossed the Lago Sambuco, which marks the start of the last but hardest kilometres – The gradient was permanently between 9 and 20 %. Slowly the nature around us turns into a rugged landscape, I was fighting against the painful and screaming legs and slowly hoped, that this torture would be over soon!
4. Finally, the view made us forget all the pain. Deep blue water in a setting of snow covered mountains – No traffic, no tourists, just pure nature around us…There are many few places where you’ll find something like this and we found paradise on 2311m a.s.l.

So the climb up to Lago del Narèt is a real insider tip for those, who are looking for quiet routes, breathtaking landscapes and who are not shying away from a long and hard climb. And where else would you have the chance to challenge a climb through nearly all climate zones, without traffic and on adventurous roads? It’s worth a trip for sure!
