Bavarian Mountain Pass with Epic Views

Bavaria is one of those well-known but hidden spots for European cycling. We get too wrapped up with the more popular grand tour passes in the Alps, and don’t look wide enough to see the epic beauty of these majestic roads, weaving their way through the mountains.

This ride starts from the beautiful lakeside of Konigssee, allowing you to stay for a few days and do several activities or rides, before heading to the climb, then descending to the town of Berchtesgaden for refreshments. Thankfully, this old mountain town has many worthwhile reasons to visit, despite the unfortunate links within 20th Century history.

There’s then an optional second loop to finish of the day, before returning to the lake for a cool drink and swim.

Refreshments & Where to Stay

If you’re staying nearby at Salzburg, then there’s lots of options foryou; and, you can then drive to Konigssee and park up by the lakeside, then head off riding. Alternatively, Konigssee itself has numerous accommodation options. Take a look by clicking the link HERE

Refreshments are easy to find along the way, and at the start point. Do however take fluids and snacks with you, too.

Character

This route starts off with a challenging climb, before the gradients get easier and more flowing. Along the way, the views of the mountains are breathtaking and definitely rewarding.

Route

1. Nestled in Bavaria’s Berchtesgaden National Park, Konigssee is a breathtaking alpine lake, with the nearby tourist town of Berchtesgaden amply suited for you. This ride starts at the car parking area and tourist point at the northern end of the Lake. A short ride towards Berchtesgaden takes you after 6km to the renowned Bavarian road climb of Rossfeld Panoramastrasse.

2. The climb itself is filled with hairpins and switchnacks that help to break up the toil. It goes on for approximately 12km, with an average gradient of 8.3%. The steepest section is at 19%, but is thankfully short lived.

3. Once summitted, the road descends the hairpins, all the way to the town of Berchtesgaden, where refreshments can be taken, prior to the second loop – a more relaxed ride.

4. Head north out of Berchtesgaden, on Berchtesgaden Strasse, signed towards Bischofswiesen, with a gentle climb.

5. After the 39km point, the cycle path leads off right – at Bischofsweisen, before then turning left and crossing over the route 20 on a road named ‘Loipler Strasse’.

6. At the 40km point, a short but steep climb tests you for a while, before the scenic roads wind their magical way like ribbons around the forested scenery. After 48 km the quiet and narrow roads rejoin a busier road -the highway 305, which takes you back to Berchtesgaden.

7. It’s then simply a case of riding back down to the lake at Konigssee.

A ride into history, and the wine area of southern Germany

Heidelberg is well-known across the world for its historic centre; especially the 14th century university – the oldest in Germany. Being alongside the beautiful Neckar River in southwestern Germany, Heidelberg is a wealth of culture and history, with the venerable Heidelberg University, founded in the 14th century, the Gothic Heiliggeistkirche church, which towers over the cafe-lined Marktplatz, a town square in the Altstadt (Old Town). The red-sandstone ruins of Heidelberg Castle, a noted example of Renaissance architecture, stand sentinel over Heidelberg, on Königstuhl hill.

It’s a town to stay for a few days in, to stand on the historical stone bridge and to see the town lit up at night, as you enjoy a mini cycling break, with culture for after the gravel trails.

Refreshments & Where to Stay

Heidelberg has been welcoming visitors for centuries and has ample choices for refreshments and places to stay. The Fresko Cafe & Bar is a good place to get great coffee from, and can be found at Sofienstraße 29, 69115 Heidelberg, Germany.

Character

The tracks and trails are all reasonable for experienced riders. The Heidelberg area is famed for its history and culture, and the magnificent university. The ride heads out of the town and rolls around the forested hills on tracks and comfortable trails, and has ample opportunity to extend the ride in places, if you want a longer challenge. Ruined castles are all over this area, and it’s a history lovers paradise.

Route

This route requires you to follow the GPX file.
Cross over the bridge from the old town of Heidelberg and turn right towards the trees and parkland that winds towards the Philosophers” Way – Philosophen Weg on Google Maps.
The GPX route guides you along tracks and trails, surrounded by the trees, as you climb and fall, and pass several small monuments.
Once the initial climbing and descending is done, at the 37 km point, an 8 km steady climb takes you to a high point, after which a series of rolling climbs leads you forward, traversing the tree-lined hillsides above Heidelberg.
The final climb begins some 15 km from Heidelberg, alongside the Neckar River at the small but amazing, four-castle town of Neckarsteinach. Once this final climb is done, it’s a fast descent back into Heidelberg and refreshments.

A ride into history

This reasonably short adventure gravel ride takes on the culture and history of this wine loving area of Germany and Bavaria. From the majestic history of the 12th-century stone bridge in Regensburg, you follow the river, before heading into the forests near to historic Kelheim – famed for spectacular caves and castles, before riding back to Regensburg via the river.

It’s a ride to combine with a weekend in Regensburg, taking in the history and culture of this spectacular part of Bavaria. Next to Regensburg Cathedral, the Stone Bridge is Regensburg’s most important landmark and a UNESCO site. With the start of construction in 1135, the Stone Bridge is considered a masterpiece of medieval architecture and is the oldest preserved bridge in Germany and a great place to start and finish a ride into adventure from.

Refreshments & Where to Stay

Regensburg has ample choices, such as the great burger restaurant at Adolf-Schmetzer-Straße 5. Once you get into the forests near Kelheim, a slight detour allows you to enjoy the cafe in the trees at Restaurant Frauenhäusl, which is marked on our Google map.

Character

The tracks and trails are all reasonable for experienced riders. The Regensburg area is famed for its history and culture, and wine – and this ride follows the river, before heading into the forests and exploring the trails between Regensburg and historic Kelheim, famed for caves and ruined castles

Route

This route requires you to follow the GPX file.
Follow the track from Regensburg along the south side of the Danube, then crossing the river to the hamlet of Riegling after 6.5 km.
Ride via Sinzing onto the riverside track on the north side of the Danube, to the hamlet of Gundelshausen, then turning right and riding to Kapfelburg, and climbing into the forested hills towards Wallner Kapelle at 32 km.
Descend towards Kelheim and then ride to a point where you cross over the earlier ascending track, this time climbing rolling tracks and skirting the hamlet of Saxberg, then passing the chapel at Zuylenkapelle. The track rolls you towards Alte Eich, a photo opportunity spot, before descending steeply and shortly back to the riverside paths that return you to Regensburg.

Munich to Starnberger See Gravel Ride

Glorious gravel biking from Bayern Grevet

This epic gravel bike route from Munich is taken from a recent Bayern-Grevet series of gravel biking events. It takes you on either a long, one day excursion, or better still, a two-day trip into the amazing German countryside of Bavaria. Lake Starnbeger is one of the largest lakes in Germany, and is a popular trip for people from Munich, and so makes the ideal gravel biking adventure from Munich.

Stats 154 km 1,352 metres

Refreshments & Where to Stay

Starnberger Lake is a tourism hotspot and so has all that you need for accommodation options and places to stop off for refreshments. Likewise, once back at Munich, there are ample options.

Character

The tracks and trails are all reasonable for experienced riders. Fitness is key though, and so don’t overstretch yourself. There is one section of this route, for approximately 0.4km where you will need to dismount and walk, as cycling on that section is forbidden, and as such we support this requirement. Let’s cycle sensibly and stick to the rules please. It’s a long and flowing route, with the majority of the ride on gravel tracks or cycling trails. Over 110 km of the route is on paths or gravel trails, with 4 km of singletrack in the forests. Make sure that you are fit enough to complete this ride, and take sufficient tools and equipment with you.

If you are taking a 2-day ride, then consider using a Tailfin cycling pannier for lightness and ease of use.

Route

* Part of this route requires you to dismount and walk for 0.37 km. Please do so and cycle sensibly for all of us.

This route requires you to follow the GPX file, as it is long and complex. The ride starts in the wooded parkland at Tischler Strasse, before heading around the town of Gauting, and continuing on the gravel trails to Starnberg itself.
From here, a series of twists and turns take you into the countryside, with views over the lake itself, before arriving, after 100 km at the southern edge of the lake, where we suggest an overnight stay.
Once rested and refreshed, load up the bike and head back into the forests and rolling trails, all the way back to Munich. The return journey skirts several hamlets and villages, where you can detour for refreshments.

Gravel biking in the Bavarian Alps

Munich needs no introduction, but the countryside around this amazing Bavarian city is also worth exploring. Whilst many people consider a city break to Munich, we believe that it’s time for cyclists to consider a cycling holiday in Bavaria and Munich, too. After all, it’s the gateway to the German mountains and the Alps, and borders with spectacular mountain scenery in Austria and Switzerland too.

Route Information

Refreshments & Where to Stay

Garmisch is used to catering for tourists and cyclists, so there’s ample choices of biker friendly places to stay.

In terms of food, once again, this is Germany, and you’ll find everything that you need. On the ride however, take plenty of drinks and snacks, as this is a ride into the mountains and you’ll need lots of energy. However, at 52 km you’ll be pleased to reach the village of Ehrwald in the Tyrol, where you can find a good cafe to rest, eat and drink, before the final ride section back to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Character

The tracks and trails are all reasonable for experienced riders. Fitness is key though, and so don’t overstretch yourself. There are some steep hills on the ride, and one with an average of 4.7% for over 2.5 km, so make sure that you and your bike is equipped for the adventure.

Route

Leave Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the E533 road. It’s an excellent road and will allow you to build up time. At Kranzbach, 11.4km leave the road onto the st2542 road, and stay on this until the picturesque village of Mittenwald (16 km
Leave Mittenwald on Leutascher Strasse, and ride along this amazing single track road, over the border and into Austria, with limestone cliffs on one side and trees all around you, and the river close at hand (Leutascher Ache), and with epic views through the trees and into the alpine countryside.
At 25 km, the hamlet of Lochlehn is reached and the scenery opens up. After 33 km, on reaching the village of Klamm, the route steepens sharply.
At the road junction in Klamm, a series of road signs (near to the alpine map), point in a variety of directions. Keep the small white painted building on your right and the alpine map (in the wooden edged glass case) on your left, and climb the narrow road upwards into the tree lined mountains of the Tyrol, with the river, Leutascher Ache, to your left hand side.
By the time you reach the mountain hamlet of Ehrwalder Alm at 46 km, you’ll be on good quality gravel and ready to rest. Stay focused though, as a mere 4 km away, there’s a lots of options to look after you. Thankfully, it’s downhill from here on in, and you’ll be able to make the most of the friendly gradients. It’s a steep downhill, until reaching the large village of Ehrwald.
On reaching the small grassy centre plaza in Ehrwald itself, a road junction is reached. Turn right at this, onto Haupt Strasse, keeping the large ‘Ski for rent’ store to your left. Take time in Ehrwald to rest and replenish energy.
Once you do set off again, you’ll soon be crossing the border and back into Bavaria. It’s a gentle ride back now to Garmisch.

This one-day gravel bike route takes you from the centre of Munich, out to the shores of the lake at Tegernsee, surrounded by the forested mountains of Bavaria, and with the Alps in view. We then cycle back via the magical town of Bad Tölz, giving you even more spectacular views of the Bavarian mountains, along with superb forest and riverside riding too. All that’s required from you is a sense of adventure – let’s go exploring Bavaria, by bike!

Route Information

Refreshments & Where to Stay

This is a long day on the bike, which can be split into a 2-day gravel bike ride if you choose. That being so, we’d recommend staying at Bad Tolz, amidst the medieval beauty and amazing streets filled with colour and history. Both at Tegernsee and Bad Tolz, there are ample choices for refreshments. However, for a long ride such as this, always take plenty of drinks and snacks along, too.

Character

This ride follows cycleways alongside roads, quiet roads, country lanes and forested tracks too. The surfaces are all good and we recommend using a gravel bike, for gearing and comfort. The route climbs steadily, as you’d expect, heading out into the hills and mountains of Bavaria. However, there’s nothing too steep along the way, and the gradient is in your favour along the ride back into Munich.

Route

Whilst we’ve suggested Bavaria Park in Munich as the starting point for this ride, you can begin the ride anywhere in the city. Simply head of Munch towards the Isar River, picking up the riverside path.
Once you’ve crossed over the rail line, you’ll soon turn towards the St2072 road. Cross over this into the forests and ride along Grenz Geraumt, to a point where the cycle track then follows the direction of the rail line southwards.
At 12 km, cross the rail line and follow the forest tracks towards Furth, crossing the junction of roads and skirting around the norther edges of the small town of Furth, before heading back into the forest and southwards towards the small town of Sauerlach.
Leave the town along Muhlweg, crossing the rail line once more, and ride south-west, crossing over the autobahn, on Taxen Geraumt, and follow this route until the junction with Markweg at the 30 km point. Turn right and then left, and then 3rd right onto Haupt Geraunt, riding through the Holfoldinger Forest towards Kreuz Strasse (maps) – follow our GPX.
Winding roads and lanes now follow the Mangfall River all the way to the beautiful valley and lake at Tegernsee.
From Tegensee, weave your way westwards via Marienstein, into the forest alongside the Schierlach River, and then alongside the Große Gaißach. Pick up the Isar River and the roads that lead northwards into the town at Bad Bad Tölz. Now could be the perfect time and the perfect place to stay, and to explore this magical little town.
Once rested, either on the day or overnight, simply follow the Isar River bike route all the way back to Munich, taking in the amazing views along the river and in the forests.

Exploring the culture of Bavaria, on 2-wheels

For 300 kilometres, the Bavaria 5 Rivers Cycling Route flows through the magnificent countryside of beautiful Bavaria. Following the routes of the following 5 ricers: Danube, Altmühl, Naab, Vils, and Pegnitz, this is a great multi-day cycling tour in the southern Germany state. The cycling route takes you up to Nurenburg, the second largest city in Bavaia and home to numerous art treasures. From historical sites to and exciting museums to the world-famous Christkindlesmarkt, Nurenburg is well worth staying a while to explore. Why not take a rest day here, park the bike up and be a cultural tourist for a while.

The classic route starts at the World Heritage site city of Regensburg, north of Munich; however, you can in reality start it at any point along the route. Regensburg is however a place worthy of being the start and finish to such an epic cycling tour in Bavaria. With over 2000 years of history contained within its beautiful streets, over 1,500 historic listed buildings, the outstanding Stone Bridge and magnificent cathedral, you could spend days exploring Regensburg.

Stage 1

Stage 1: Regensburg to Kelheim

Along the Danube – 31km

One of the truly magnificent rivers of Europe, in every aspect, the Danube is Europe’s second-longest river and flows through an encyclopaedia of Bavarian and European history. We’ve already mentioned the World Heritage Site city of Regensburg, with medieval alleyways and beautiful buildings all around you; however, this day includes Danube river gorges and an opportunity to see the Monastery at Weltenburg, as well as exploring the Liberation Hall on arrival at Kelmheim.

Stage 2: Kelheim – Berching (52 km)

Along the Danube – 52 km

This stage takes in a wealth of history, taking you along Europe’s longest archaeological park. Limestone caves, and beautiful river gorges abound, as you cycling along this magnificent river. Highlights are the villages of Riedenburg, Dietfurt and Beilngries.

Stage 3: Berching – Nuremberg (73 km)

This is a day of industrial culture and heritage, and a chance to explore the historic canal as you head towards the city of Nuremburg. It’s an almost pan-flat cycling stage, that gently drops you into the city of Nuremburg at the end of an easy day cycling, giving you time to explore medieval Nuremburg.

Stage 4: Nuremberg– Amberg (75 km)

Cultural beauty & medieval history

Stage 4 is an absolutely stunning day, taking in a wealth of medieval history, as you ride along excellent tracks. Leaving Nurenburg alongside the Pegnitz River, you’re spoilt for epic sights of Bavarian culture and history. Lauf an der Pegnitz is a particularly beautiful small town along the way, with picture-postcard views and historic buildings. In particular, by the river itself is the castle, built by Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor in 1356, on the way between Prague and Nuremberg. Yes, this is a perfect spot to stop and take pictures over a coffee and cake.

Travelling then along the Vils River and into Amberg, you’re met by some of the most spectacular middle ages history in Bavaria, in this town that goes back to 1034. Is’s a beautiful place to park up the bike and to explore on foot.

Stage 5: Amberg – Regensburg (64 km)

Monastic history & art, alongside the Vils and Naab Rivers

The 64 km of this route stage allow you an opportunity to explore, as you ride along the Vils and Naab. Sites include magnificent monasteries and churches, river valleys and the sublime countryside of the flood plains. Located on the Naab River, about 25 km from Regensburg, the small village of Kallmünz has a beautifully preserved medieval centre, worth stopping off for, with its castle, medieval bridge and nearby monastery. After a short break, its an easy riverside ride back to beautiful Regensgurg and it’s World Heritage architecture and history.

Munich exploring castles and Bavarian Mountain views

Exploring Munich and Bavaria

Cycling Castle to Castle via the mountains

This is our first foray into creating a suggested cycling route in Bavaria. We’ve used our wealth of experience, alongside knowledge of Germany – having lived there for 3 years, once upon a time – to create a superb multi-day bikepacking mixed road. It’s a route that takes you from the heart of Munich, cycling between some of the most spectacular castles in Bavaria, through to the Alps and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, with some spectacular Bavarian lakes along the way.

We suggest using a gravel bike, as it has better gearing, and some of the roads we’ve used are minor rural roads and tracks, and a the gravel bike is better equipped for this.

Taking in castles such as Schloss Herrenchiemsee, Neuschwanstein Castle and nearby Hohenschwangau Castle, with numerous other options nearby, you’re free to explore the spectacular mountain scenery of Bavaria on this epic Bavarian cycling route and gravel biking adventure in the Bavarian Alps.

Stats 428 km 3, 248 metres

Refreshments & Where to Stay

This is a multi-day tour, and it’s really up to you where to stay. Cycling in Bavaria allows you numerous options for excellent refreshments, in the many small towns along the way.

Towns we do recommend staying overnight in are: Rosenheim, close to Schloss Herrenchiemsee, Garmisch-Partenkirchen beneath the Alps, for it’s mountain views, and Lakeside at Tutzing, before cycling back to Munich and Marienplatz.

Character

This route has some significant climbing along the way, as well as lots of easy cycling too. Bike paths adjoin many of the roads, keeping you away from fast moving traffic as much as possible

Route

Leave Munich after checking out Schleissheim P, and heading south easterly via the GPX file directions. Head to Hohen Kirchen, which is reached via good cycle paths along the U24 road, after 28 km.
Turn left into Kohen Kirchen and follow single lane country roads all the way to the small town of Aying.
A mix of minor country lanes and cycle paths alongside other roads, continue to take you southwards to the picturesque hamlet of Altenburg at 45 km.
At 48.5 km, a turning left is made onto paths that follow the river Mangfall. Weave around Hinrichssegen and onwards towards Kolbermoor.
At Rosenheim, cross the river by the bridge close to the Inn Museum, and ride along Simsee Strasse towards the lake at Simsee. From here, we’re now close to the amazing castle on the lake at Herrenchiemsee. This historic masterpiece is a complex of royal buildings on Herreninsel, the largest island in the Chiemsee lake, in southern Bavaria, Germany. Together with the neighbouring isle of Frauenchiemsee and the uninhabited Krautinsel, it forms the municipality of Chiemsee, located about 60 kilometres southeast of Munich.
Time to rest a while now, before heading towards the Bavarian Alps and mountains by bike. First of all we have to visit nearby Hohenaschau Castle.
A mix of minor roads and country lanes and tracks now leads you westwards, through forested countryside. You arrive at Rohrdorf after 128 km, then it’s onwards and crossing the Inn River before cycling towards Bad Feilnbach at 143 km.
Wind your way via country roads to the lake at Tegernsee, and the large town of the same name. This is another useful and picturesque place to stay overnight.
A mix of good roads with cycle paths, country lanes and tracks now take you though mountain forests, all the way to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the true alpine scenery of Bavaria. With some 250 km cycled through Bavaria and the rolling countryside, with some good climbs along the way, now is a great time to rest and spend some time exploring the local culture and mountain scenery.
Leave Garmisch on minor roads towards Oberau. Then, turn and head westwards towards nearby Ettal, then follow the track alongside the Ammar River. Eventually, the hamlet of Graswang is reached in the hills. This beautiful place in the hills of Bavaria has a few options for overnight stays, and is well worth it, to experience the real cycling magic and adventure of Bavaria.
The L255 road weaves you though the river gorge and mountains, close to the border with Austria.
Eventually, these roads weave you around to the beautiful lake at Alpsee and the castles, Hohenschwangau Castle and Neuschwanstein Castle. This is definitely a place to stay overnight, park up the gravel bike and take a day or two exploring Bavarian culture and history. With 322 km of Bavarian cycling and gravel biking out of the way, you deserve a rest. Hopefully, you’re using a saddle from SQLab!
All roads now lead back to Munich, via lakes and villages, before the city awaits you.
