Finding my cycling soul

Travelling is a part of the cycling culture – ultimately, it’s what our bike was designed for. That simple journey from A to B, to which we add our own personality. We’re all unique – like bikes.

Yes, we may look the same: two legs, two wheels, arms, handlebars, a saddle and… well, you get the picture. However, it’s what we don’t see that matters – on the inside, of us and on the bike.
I started my competitive sporting life as a snowboarder, not a cyclist. An horrific accident and serious injury put paid to that, though; which is I why I then took up triathlon, competing at age-group world-level successfully, before cycling took a hold of me and opened up that spirit of exploration that is a part of who I am. I love using my bike to challenge myself, yes; but, also to explore the world in which we live and to feel the warm breeze on my face and the excitement that pumps through my veins.

I guess that I’m like my TIME Scylon: I look one way, but when you turn the pedal, a whole new personality emerges, and it’s more fun-loving than you imagined, with a strength and toughness that defies the image – and yes, fast, because ultimately, I’m still an athlete who loves performance. If I’d had a bike made for me, it would have been the Scylon. It’s become a part of me now; part of my cycling soul, and we’re off to explore Alicante together.

Riding Alicante: Heat, Mountains, and Desert Roads

Alicante in Spain is renowned the world over, as a holiday hotspot. However, are you aware how great the road cycling is in this majestic Spanish resort? Probably not, as too often, the focus of cyclists when travelling to Spain is the Islands, or Girona. However, Alicante has everything to offer, including roads that are less filled with other riders, a quieter feeling and sublime views. It’s nestled amongst coastal mountains, with exceptional roads; which is why I took myself on a cycling trip there, recently.

Yes, Alicante is full of surprises. Everyone knows the beaches, of course. Few people, however, expect the wild, open mountains that lie just a short ride inland. Here, away from the coastal crowds, the land feels more like Texas or the rising hills of Africa than Spain — dry terraces, rocky peaks, and a sky that seems endless. As an easily excited cycling tourist, and with my Scylon accompanying me, I set out to test it and to explore the climbs of Tiger Pass, Puerto de Tudons, Puerto del Collao, and Puerto de Benifallim. It turned into one of the most beautiful and most unforgettable rides I’ve ever done. One of those rides that remain unexpected and treasured, at the forefront of our memories for a long time. That causes the blood to flow faster and our bodies to feel lighter, as our eyes open up to the landscape and our heart feeds on the emotions.

I’m unashamedly a spiritual and emotion athlete. Away from cycling, I’m a designer and also a painter, using color to carry forward the images I create. So yes, when I’m cycling, I totally immerse myself in the landscape. For now, though, it’s time to ride, as me and my bike head off into the Alicante mountains, exploring this beautiful corner of mainland Spain. Yes, it’s time to ride!

A long but rewarding route, with climbs and mountain views views, and the sun high in the sky. Road surface conditions are superb.

The route combines inland climbs, fast descents, scenic towns, anddeserted roads, too. The sun beats down at time, so wear sun screen and take on board lots of fluids. Whether you’re chasing fitness, a photo-worthy adventure, or pure road cycling pleasure, this ride offers it all.

Route

Puerto de Tudons (1,025 m)

My day started from Alcoy heading towards the Puerto de Tudons. Around 8 km with a 4% average and at a 7-9% maximum steepness – steady, but brutal in the heat. My bottles turn warm within minutes, and every patch of shade feels like a gift. The bike is looking after things though – light and responsive, pushing me to hold a rhythm even when the heat tried to break me. Once I settled into the heat and the climb, it becomes a route to smile on; with the challenge being a positive one, as the Scylon eats up the distance, keeping me comfortable and focused. I have fluids and nutrition and views, and I have a purpose, as the sun beats down on me. I’m renewing my cycling soul, away from the crowds, and the freedom that rushes through my body as the gentle breeze touches my face, reminds me why we ride!

Tiger Pass – Safari Aitana

After this, I it was time to take on Tiger Pass, near Safari Aitana. The landscape here was raw, exposed and bare, with scrubland stretching out like a cycling safari. The roads are well-laid though, as they continually twist upwards under a blazing sun; the kind that makes the tarmac shimmer like a mirage. It felt wild, different, and slightly surreal — not Europe as most people imagine it. Yes, I had taken on enough fluids, and I was not hallucinating! It was a route that needed focus, and set myself – rider and Scylon as one, as the cranks turned and the views opened up. Before too long, it was done, and it was time for another Alicante cycling challenge.

Puerto del Collao (890 m)

This climb was shorter but nastier. The Collao throws itself upwards in ramps of 13–16%, hitting you straight in the face, like walls. The road looks at you and challenges you, as it rises in threatening, jagged steps, but thankfully with some downhill sections on which to relax.

Ultimately though, as I mentioned earlier – I’m an athlete at heart, and have competed across the world. The road and I challenge each other, as I turn the cranks and remain focused and positive – this is my choice and want to see the summit views.

From the summit, the landscape opens wide and I was rewarded, finally. Beneath me were terraced valleys with olive trees and jagged limestone ridges, stretching far into the haze. It all looked magical and timeless – like a movie with a Spanish guitar playing softly and lyrically in the background – and no, once again I am not hallucinating! I’m immersing myself in the cycling experience, as I explore Spain and explore myself and my cycling limits. Spanish. Views and feelings like this, need to be taken slowly and allowed to wash over you; and, after all, I have TIME on my side!

Puerto de Benifallim (1,020 m)

The final challenge for me was Puerto de Benifallim. It’s a short, steadier climb that winds through a pine forest before breaking into rocky open ground above 1,000 m. The altitude brought a whisper of cooler air, but the sun still pressed hard, testing me physically and mentally.

Surviving the Heat

At 40°C, the fountains in the village squares became my salvation. The brutality of the climb was done for a while, and I didn’t just fill my bottles — I soaked myself completely. Yes, jersey, shorts, head, everything.

It was the only way to keep going! Having competed in triathlon all over the world, I know how heat can affect athletes, and this was something that only a fully dipped and watered head can solve! Each time I left a fountain dripping, the cool water evaporating instantly in the dry air, and it felt like a reset button for the next climb – the next challenge.

Descents Like a Bullet

The reward for every ascent, however, were the epic descents to look forward to. The Scylon is designed to be responsive and light, and it came into its own on the descending. I was able to relax and aim the bike, as I moved by tired body around the bike, in harmony with the curving road. Long, sweeping, and fast, cutting turns through a barren landscape, with nothing but the wind in my ears and on my face. The wheels hummed steadily, and the bike felt like a bullet, holding the line and giving me that much-needed confidence in the corners, as the road twisted and turned like a ribbon, loosely strewn across the mountains.

Epic rides of exploration

What makes Alicante special is the contrast. In one ride, you pass through desert scrub, thick pine forests, rocky ridgelines, and timeless stone villages. It feels like riding through an old Western movie set — only, with your bike as the horse, carrying you across the landscape. No, it’s not the Alps nor the Pyrenees. It’s harsher, hotter, and maybe even more rewarding, emotionally.

Alicante is a place where survival, speed, and scenery collide, and it leaves you with memories that burn long after the ride is done. For me, it was special and it tested me and the bike. Yes, Alicante is a place for TIME travellers! It’s a place that should be on every cyclist’s bucket list, as you explore the variety and exceptional terrain that Spain has to offer for cycling. Too often, people head for the obvious Spanish locations, when you can pause time and find one the best places for cycling in Spain, away from the crowds.

I love my bike – it’s like me. TIME like to be different; to show their uniqueness. They look for excellence in everything – like me. Ultimately, we like to explore our limits – because the resultant feeling is unequalled, and it reminds us of one very important thing – that we’re alive!

Exploring Albacete: Spain’s Quiet Cycling Paradise

Taking Time to Ride New Places

When people talk about cycling in Spain, the same names always come up: Girona, the Pyrenees, maybe the Sierra Nevada. They’re classics for a reason, and popular paces for cyclists the world over. I’ve ridden in each of these amazing places, and felt the warm sun beating down on me, with a cool breeze refreshing my face as I’ve descended the epic climbs that seem to lie in every mountain valley.

However, this summer I found myself pedalling in a place far less famous – and it completely won me over. Albacete, tucked away in Castilla-La Mancha, is an underrated cycling gem that offers stunning scenery, peaceful roads, and a real sense of adventure. It’s a place that quietly exists, seemingly knowing that once you’ve discovered it, you’ll always want to come back for more – and I do.

Cycling Off the Beaten Path

I was there in August, during the peak season, when most tourist hotspots in Spain and elsewhere are overflowing with traffic and long café lines. Not so here. The roads around the small mountain villages were blissfully quiet, the travel affordable, and the hospitality was refreshingly authentic. Instead of queues and crowds, there were olive groves, fig trees hanging heavy with fruit, wild blackberries by the roadside, and even truffles hiding beneath the soil. If I hadn’t been cycling, I would have been foraging and collecting some of this bountiful food and fruit. Yes, it felt like pedalling through a Mediterranean garden with a special pass for the most beautiful areas. My senses felt alive both on and off the bike and I felt alive and ready to explore.

The only downside – and it really was a first-world problem? Finding a decent cappuccino. I learned the hard way that oat or almond milk is much easier to track down than a proper cappuccino with “avena” milk – after a week, I almost quit coffee entirely. Almost… but obviously, not quite!

Rides That Stood Out

One of the most memorable cycling routes took me from Molinicos, climbing up through Puerto de las Crucetillas and over to Peralejo. These are not monster alpine passes, but instead are rolling, gentle climbs through quiet forests, with sweeping views that appear out of nowhere. They lie like ribbons across the Spanish landscape, and the gradients are kind, the tarmac is smooth, and you achieve that wonderfully calm and tranquil feeling of total solitude on the bike – just you, the road, and the whisper of wind through the pines.

Cycle tourism these days is big business, and too many places become filled with too many cyclists, losing that reason why we all headed there in the first place. But here in the gentle, rolling hills of Albacete, I was able to lose myself and to find time to ride and time to rejuvenate my soul.

Another highlight for me, was looping around Embalse de la Fuensanta, a reservoir surrounded by dramatic limestone mountains that stood sentinel and which radiated the sun with the light rock. The turquoise water of the reservoir looked so inviting that we ditched the bikes for a swim – easily one of the most memorable mid-rides stops I’ve ever had.

Seeking Adventure

Not every adventure went perfectly to plan. At one point, convinced we’d found a clever shortcut, we ended up lost. Trust me, this isn’t a regular thing for me – my navigation is usually spot on! However, whilst riding along our not-so-shortcut, after 30 minutes it was clear this was not rideable gravel, and three hours later – sunburnt, dusty, and pushing bikes uphill in 40°C – we admitted defeat! Lesson learned: the long way round is the better option. (You can see the comedy of errors on my Strava route if you’re curious!) I promise you, I won’t send you on the shortcut, if you want to repeat the ride, error free! Although, it may provide you with a real sense of adventure!

Why You Should Go

Albacete might not yet be on the cycling world’s radar, but that’s exactly what makes it special. The landscapes are raw and beautiful, the climbs are friendly but rewarding, and the roads are blissfully free from traffic. Add in warm, welcoming locals and a slower pace of life, and you’ve got the perfect destination for cyclists who want more than just ticking off famous passes.

One aspect of cycling that always appeals to me, is to be able to relax and find myself again. To set myself free as I climb the passes and to feel the wind in my face as I explore the descents and watch the amazing landscapes fly by me at speed – or at a slower pace, where I can press pause and take it all in. Taking time to pause is always good – and riding my Time Scylon in these hills, was just perfect, as the bike and I became one.

If you’re looking for a quieter, more authentic cycling trip in Spain – one where you can ride all day, swim in a reservoir, eat figs straight from the tree, and never once get stuck in a café queue – then put Albacete on your map. Just maybe bring your own coffee beans!

This is a road cycling route par excellence, for cyclists chasing unforgettable roads, panoramic views, and just the right amount of suffering. Yes, the Costa Brava delivers all of this and more, in spades. This round-trip route from Begur to Tossa de Mar and back, featuring the legendary 365 Curvas coastal road, is a signature ride in north-eastern Spain — and is arguably one of the finest day rides in Europe. Time then to take a cycle ride into the mountains of the Costa Brava!

Route Information

Stats 125 km 2,200 metres

• Start/Finish: Begur
• Turnaround Point: Tossa de Mar
• Difficulty: Challenging

Road Surface: Excellent tarmac (GI-682 coastal road is especially smooth)

The route combines inland climbs, fast descents, scenic towns, and an out-and-back ride along one of the most sinuous roads in Europe. Whether you’re chasing fitness, a photo-worthy adventure, or pure road cycling pleasure, this ride offers it all.

Route

Outbound: Begur to Tossa de Mar (62.5 km)
1. Begur to Palamós (20 km, 300 m gain): Warming up with rolling inland terrain, the ride weaves through pine forests and traditional Catalan villages.
2. Palamós to Sant Feliu de Guíxols (20 km, 250 m gain): Fast, flatter terrain near the coast, good roads and mild traffic.
3. Sant Feliu to Tossa de Mar (365 Curvas) (22 km, 450 m gain): The highlight segment—22 km of tight curves, no long climbs but constant rollers, with cliffs plunging into the sea and pristine Mediterranean views.

Return: Tossa de Mar to Begur (62.5 km)
The return retraces the outbound route in reverse, but the feel of the climbs and descents will change:
1. Tossa to Sant Feliu: Feels slightly more uphill on the way back, especially the first half.
2. Sant Feliu to Palamós: A chance to recover and spin out the legs on flatter roads.
3. Final Climb to Begur: A short but demanding sting in the tail as you ascend back into town—prepare for tired legs and strong sea breezes.

Useful Information

Elevation Profile
• Max Elevation: 220 m (Begur hilltop)

Notable Climbs
• Coastal rollers on the GI-682 (short climbs, 6–10% gradients)
• Final 3 km ascent back into Begur (5–7% average)

This route is all about accumulated elevation—there are few long, sustained climbs, but the constant undulating terrain wears you down. Pacing and nutrition are key.

Road Cycling Highlights

1. The 365 Curvas (GI-682): Over 365 tight corners on a 22 km section between Sant Feliu and Tossa. It’s scenic, technical, and incredibly fun—especially with light traffic in early mornings or off-season.
2. Tossa de Mar: The perfect midway stop. Visit the walled medieval Old Town, refill bottles, and grab a café cortado by the beach.
3. Begur’s Return Climb: A fitting end to a demanding route, with panoramic views over the Cap de Begur and the Mediterranean.

Practical Tips

1. Traffic: Light to moderate, though summer weekends can bring coastal congestion—start early.
2. Refueling Stops:
3. Palamós and Sant Feliu both offer cafés and restaurants.
4. Tossa de Mar has many options for lunch, coffee, or a beach break.
5. Best Season: Spring and autumn—pleasant temperatures, fewer tourists, and ideal road conditions.
6. Gear Tips:
a. Compact gearing (e.g. 50/34 with 11–30 or 11–32) is helpful for the rollers and final climbs.
b. Bring a camera or insta360—you’ll regret leaving it behind.

Final Thoughts

Cycling the Begur–Tossa de Mar loop via the 365 Curvas is a Costa Brava classic. It’s scenic, challenging, and never dull. From medieval towns to turquoise coves and endless switchbacks, this route is a bucket-list ride for any serious cyclist visiting Catalonia.

A ride to Rat Penat

Rat Penat, a translation from the Catalan language meaning “bat,” is an renowned cycling climb in Catalonia that offers a thrilling experience for cyclists. Situated in the Garraf range of mountains, Rat Penat poses a real challenge to every cyclist brave enough to take it on. With its steep gradients, reaching up to 23% in some sections, this climb can be compared to the famous Mortirola in Bormio.

Not only is Rat Penat a test of physical endurance, but it also offers breath-taking views along the way. Starting from Casteldefels and Gavà, cyclists can enjoy the beautiful beaches of Castelldefels during the climb. As you pedal higher, the impressive vistas of the coast unfold, as Rat Penat is located in close proximity to the sea, between Castelldefels and Sitges. Having been here in Catalonia for some time now, I thought that it was time for this Barcelona resident to hit the hills and tackle this epic climb.

Breath-taking summit

At the summit of Rat Penat to Sitges route cyclists are rewarded for the hard work, with not only a sense of accomplishment, but also the sight of the Buddhist Monastery that graces the top. This adds a unique cultural dimension to the experience, making it even more memorable. Rat Penat has gained recognition on the professional cycling stage as well, having been included in the route of the Vuelta a España in 2010 and 2013. This further attests to the challenge and allure of this climb, and makes it a climb for anyone visiting the area to have on their list of challenges.

Where to stay

For those staying in Barcelona, convenient train tickets can be purchased to reach Castelldefels, where the journey to Rat Penat begins. As I mentioned above; the combination of the challenging ascent, stunning views of the coastline, and the presence of the Buddhist Monastery, all combine to make the Rat Penat cycling climb a must-try for any cyclist exploring Catalonia. Add to this, the cultural vibrancy of Barcelona, and you’ve got the makings of a great trip.

Route

Start at the coast, cycling from the small town of Rat Perat and head upwards into Parc del Garraf. After 5 km, turn off right and ascend the short climb to the summit, then descending back to the main highway.
At 19km pass the observatory as you continue to descend sweeping roads.
At 26km pass El Mas Mila village, continuing on the BV-111 highway back south towards the coast.
Cross over the C-32 main highway and continue downwards to the coastal roads, eventually picking up the C-31 towards Rat Perat.
A short detour upwards can be taken at 39km, to Emita de la Trinitat de Sitges.

This gem along the Costa del Sol is a must-ride for all cycling enthusiasts traveling to Malaga. It’s a 15 km climb from Estepona , with steepest section goes up to 14.6 % and it’ll definitely get your heart pumping. But let’s talk about the real star of the show: the jaw-dropping scenery. As you pedal your way up, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views at every turn.

Take a break at the miradores (Spanish word for viewpoints) and soak in the beauty of the Mediterranean coastline and the majestic Sierra Bermeja mountains. It’s like a postcard come to life! And here’s the best part: despite being close to the hustle and bustle of the Costa del Sol, this climb is surprisingly peaceful. No need to dodge crowds or traffic here. It’s just you and the open road, surrounded by nature’s beauty.

The apartments are plush and of a high standard, with the very best of facilities on tap, to make your well-being stay simply wonderful.

There are options for refreshments both on route and near the summit.

Character

The route climbs from the coast, on a winding mountain road, and is steep in places. Take lots of fluids and sun screen with you.

Route

The Peñas Blancas climb covers a total distance of 15.5 kilometers from Estepona and takes you up to a whopping 976 meters above sea level. I started my ride from Costalita, The Flag Costa del Sol hotel, riding towards Estepona via spectacular promenade, and after passing by Mercadona in Estepona,I made my way through the stunning Genal Valley, enjoying both thrilling uphill ramps and some smoother, faster sections.

Now, let’s break it down with some cool stats: – Length of Climb: 15.5 kilometers – Summit Elevation: 974 meters – Start Elevation: 5 meters – Elevation Gain: 969 meters – Average Gradient: 6.2% – Maximum Gradient: Whoa! It reaches a heart-pounding 14.2%!

Despite the unexpected rain turning my Costa del Sol experience into the “Costa del Rain,” I won’t let it dampen my spirits. It’s the perfect excuse to come back and conquer the Peñas Blancas and other climbs with sunny skies overhead . Next time I’ll also discover the hidden treasures that the rain tried to hide!

Conquering the Mare de Deu del Mont Climb

As a passionate cyclist, I’m always looking for challenging climbs that offer stunning views and a sense of achievement. The Mare de Deu del Mont climb in Girona, caught my attention as it promised both elements. In this article, I’ll share my experience of conquering this legendary climb and why it has become one of my favourite cycling destinations in Girona. It’s definitely a place that I can recommend for a great cycling holiday or short excursion into the mountains of northern Spain.

It’s been a great winter for me, with the opportunity to travel all over the mountains in this spectacular country. I’ve explored many places on my bike, and I’ll be bringing you lots of great climbs to tackle yourself.

The Climb

From Cabanelles, it’s a 18-kilometer road, with an average gradient of 5.4% and pitches up to 14% at the steepest section. The road is surrounded by the peaceful beauty of the forest and hills, with magical views

Gradients are gentle on average, with a few steeper sections throughout the climb, particularly at the last few kilometres. Most of the climb took me through a narrow, smooth and quiet road, and a dense forest that offered a serene atmosphere. Approximately 3 kilometres from the summit, the gaps in the trees revealed some truly breath-taking far-reaching views across the hills.

The Summit

Reaching the summit of the Mare de Deu del Mont climb was an incredibly rewarding moment. The summit had a restaurant/café with a wonderful outdoor terrace where I could rest and enjoy cafe con leche, with the panoramic 360 views of the Garrotxa region, the Pyrenees, and the Mediterranean Sea. There is also a museum and a sculpture of Jacint Verdaguer, a renowned Catalan poet who lived on top in the hermitage and wrote about the beauty of the mountains.
It’s one of Catalonia’s most captivating and iconic cycling routes for me, a dream place without the slightest doubt!.

Stats 44 km 980 metres (round trip) 18 km climb

Refreshments & Where to Stay

Girona is close to hand, and is a haven for cyclists. There are ample places to stay and find the right accommodation for you. I started the climb from Cabanelles, however, the nearby town of Navata has more options post-ride and for parking. At the summit of the climb today, there’s a café for must needed refreshments!

Character

A long and winding road climbs like a ribbon across the hills. It’s not overly steep, but it does have some steep sections. The reverse route – saddle up and enjoy!

Route

1. Leave Navata and head for a short distance along the N-260 highway, west. Turn off onto the GIV-5238 road on the right, then take the right fork – GIV 5237 – towards Can Puig.

2. The road climbs into trees, with several historical sites along the way.

3. Approaching the summit, the trees give way to extensive views, and the sanctuary of the church and café is reached! Rest a while, then safely tackle the descent.

Bilbao, located in the heart of the Basque Country in northern Spain, is a paradise for road cyclists. With its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and delicious Pintxos, it offers a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. Close to the city and its surroundings, there are a variety of superb road bike rides that will take you through picturesque villages, along breath-taking coastal roads, and up challenging mountain passes. The routes range from hilly and rolling to the unique “Bilbao flat” terrain, which refers to the continuous mix of climbs, descents, and undulating roads. This adds an extra element of challenge and excitement for cyclists who enjoy a varied terrain. In this article, we will explore some of the best road bike rides around Bilbao.

I spent some time in the city and surrounding area recently, looking at the rides, so that we can show you the very best road cycling routes in Bilbao. Here’s my selection then; and, all that you need to do is to enjoy them! Over the next few weeks, we’ll produce maps of each of the routes, individually, with full descriptions on our website. My favourite Bilbao routes

1. Coastline: This scenic ride takes you along the stunning coastline from Bilbao to the town of Getxo, Sopela, and Pletzia. The route offers breath-taking views of the Bay of Biscay and takes you through charming seaside towns and picturesque beaches. 2. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe: This ride is a must-do for any cyclist visiting Bilbao. The highlight of this route is the climb up to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe viewpoint , a small hermitage perched on a rocky island. The hermitage, dedicated to San Juan Bautista, dates back to the 10th century and is located on top of a rocky islet connected to the coast by a stone bridge with 241 steps. 3. Zumaia to San Sebastian: This road bike ride takes you along the beautiful coastline from the town of Zumaia to the vibrant city of San Sebastian. The route offers stunning views of the rugged cliffs, golden beaches, and crystal-clear waters of the Bay of Biscay. As you cycle along the coast, you will pass through charming fishing villages such as Orio and Getaria, known for their delicious seafood. Climbing the Rocacorba – Girona

Girona has become a mecca and home to many of the world’s top cyclists. Situated in the north of Spain, close to the Pyrenees and the coastal mountains, its a place filled with vibrancy and culture. There’s a wealth of great cycling climbs to tackle – almost too many to choice from. However, the Rocacorba is a stand-out route, and it’s one that I chose to tackle recently.

The Rocacorba climb, starting around Banyoles lake, is a challenging and famous cycling route in the Girona area. Many local pros have made this climb their training ground, and the Strava segment of this climb has been fiercely contested by both professionals and enthusiasts, adding to its allure. In this article, I want to share my personal opinion and emotions about the climb.

Banyoles and the Lake

As I set off from the charming town of Banyoles, the anticipation of the Rocacorba climb filled the air. The route began with a scenic ride around the shimmering Lake Banyoles, awakening my legs before tackling the 9.7km ascent with an average gradient of 7%.

I pedaled my way up, the lush green forests embraced me, providing a soothing backdrop to the effort. The road twisted and turned, revealing glimpses of the stunning countryside. The gradient fluctuated, testing my endurance and determination. The initial part may deceive with its shallower gradients, tempting me to go all out. However, pacing is crucial, as going too hard too soon will cost in the later miles. Holding back and staying steady is key to achieving the best time. The last 1.5km is still steep, with an average gradient of 8%. Fatigue will start to set in, but with the Pyrenees to your right and the summit in sight, you can draw inspiration and push yourself to the limit.

Heading to the summit

Once I pass the hairpin past the sign, only 300m remain. I give it my all and empty the tank. The exhilaration of reaching the top will be worth every ounce of effort. And with the knowledge that it’s downhill from there, you can savor the glory of the achievement.

At the summit, take a moment to capture photos and soak in the panoramic view. The green mountains, resembling an endless ocean, and the stunning Banyoles lake create a picture-perfect backdrop. It’s a sight that will stay with me long after my descent. There are no coffee shops at the top, so remember to bring enough fluids, as there are no water sources along the climb.

It’s a climb that truly tests physical and mental strength, leaving you with a sense of fulfilment and a desire to conquer other mountains!

Stats 28km round trip – 809 metres

Refreshments & Where to Stay

Girona is nearby, with everything that you’d expect. It’s the perfect place for cyclists, with ample places to stay, to eat and to fix or hire bikes.

Character

Tough but rewarding short climbing day, with spectacular views.

Route

1. Start at Lake Banyoles and leave the lake, riding along the giv-5247 highway towards Pujarnol. It immediately climbs and weaves its way through the mountains, with forestry either side.

2. At 7km the road eases slightly, giving you a respite period for another 1km, when the climbing increases once more.

3. In the next 4km you ascend nearly 400 metres of relentless climbing, but are rewarded with spectacular views. A brief rest is given at 12km, before the final ascent, as the twisting road reaches its summit – 14km. Enjoy the views, before descending with care back to Banyoles for coffee and cake

Road cycling enthusiasts looking for a scenic and challenging ride in Catalonia, Spain, should definitely consider Mura and Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac. This route offers riders a mix of beautiful countryside, winding roads, and tough climbs, all set against a stunning natural backdrop.

Starting in the Terrasa, this looped route takes riders on a 61 miles ride through the Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac. The park is a protected area and a natural reserve, rich in flora and fauna, and home to a diverse range of ecosystems, from rocky cliffs to lush forests.

Refreshments & Where to Stay

Mura is a picturesque medieval town located in the Catalonia region of Spain. The town has narrow, winding streets, historic stone buildings, a beautiful Romanesque church and a delicious restaurant. Come here for refuel and soak up the town’s peaceful atmosphere.

Character

This is a challenging and rewarding ride, that climbs and rolls around the majestic hills.

Route

The ride begins with a flat section, and as you enter the park with a gradual climb, steadily gaining elevation as it winds through the park’s rolling hills.
As the road ascends, riders are treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, including the Montserrat mountain range in the distance.After 33 km a summit is reached at Granera.
The climb is challenging, with a gradient of up to 10%, but the scenery makes it well worth the effort. The descent is fast and exhilarating, with sweeping curves and stunning views of the park’s rugged terrain, and lasts for around 34 km, with a small climb along the way.
At 70 km, the final climb begins, lasting for 20 km, and is tough, but has epic views, passing Mura village along the way. After maybe exploring the village, and reaching the summit once back riding, you’re rewarded with a long descent to finish

Character

The route climbs and rolls steadily, until the town of Montserrat is reached, when the real climbing begins. Thankfully, there’s lots of descending on the way back to Barcelona.

Route

Starting in Barcelona, the first section of the ride is relatively flat and provides a good warm-up for the climb ahead. As you make your way towards the foothills of Montserrat, you’ll see the iconic mountain looming in the distance, ready to challenge you.

Once you reach the town of Monistrol de Montserrat, the real climb begins. The climb is challenging, but the stunning views of the surrounding countryside make it well worth the effort. Admire the scenery!

At the top of the climb, you’ll reach the Monastery of Montserrat. This stunning complex of buildings and churches has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries, attracting visitors from all over the world. After taking a well-deserved break to explore the monastery and its surroundings, it’s time to descend back down to Barcelona.

The descent is fast and exhilarating, taking you back down the winding road towards Monistrol de Montserrat. Be sure to take care on the way down, as the road can be steep and winding in places. Once you reach the bottom, it’s a relatively flat ride back to Barcelona, giving you a chance to recover from the climb and take in the sights.

Overall, the route from Barcelona to Montserrat is a challenging and rewarding experience for any road cyclist. With stunning views, historic landmarks, and a challenging climb, it’s the perfect way to spend a day exploring the Catalan countryside.
