Grantley Hall is based within some of the most spectacular and beautiful countryside in the U.K. and has a wealth of great cycling routes from the door. On both road and mountain bike, there is so much to explore and see.

We’ve put together a few routes for you to make the most of your day on the bike, with breath-taking scenery, lots of history and some useful stops for cake too . Wherever you’re travelling from, anywhere in the world, you won’t find a better hotel; nor one that is better situated for epic cycling adventures. Based just outside the historic Cathedral city of Ripon, close the the World Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey, Grantley Hall is easily accessible from air, road and train – and bike!

Recommended Cafe Stops

It’s critical to know the best places to stop and take on board refreshments! Ask any keen cyclists . Here’s a few of our favourite places:

Johnny Baghdad’s Cafe – Masham Market Place. Situated in the corner, near to the church, this eclectic cafe is famous with local cyclists, and serves some of the best cafe food in the Dales.
Jervaulx Abbey Tearooms – Based at historic Jervaulx Abbey, in Lower Wensleydale, this cafe has no equal for its home-made cake!
The Curious Coffee Company, Easingwold – based in Easingwold market place, on the edge of the Howardian Hills, this is a ‘must stop’ venue on a ride across the Vale of York.

Coverdale and Wensleydale

Coverdale & Wensleydale

This is probably one of the most picturesque rides in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, taking in some superb climbs along its short distance. Starting from the market town of Masham, it takes you on a tour with lots of history, passing abbey’s and a castle along the way, before returning to Masham for cake

It takes you to East Witton, a beautiful Dales village, before climbing the hidden roads of Coverdale, to tiny villages with epic views across the National Park.

Refreshments & Where to Stay

Plenty of choice at Masham. Our favourite is the Johnny Baghdad’s Cafe in the corner of the market square, by the church.

Character

It’s a short ride, but filled with great climbs and descending, taking in quiet lanes that twist and turn.

Route

Head out of Masham on the road towards Leyburn, the A6018.
At East Witton, turn off left and ride up alongside the village green, taking the narrow lane that climbs to open countryside, before descending to the medieval bridge near to Coverham Abbey. Do not cross the bridge, but instead, climb upwards to West Scrafton.
At West Scrafton, descend and cross the river on the narrow and bravelly tarmac road – take care. Climb to the road T junction with the Coverdale Road, turning right and climbing to the village of Carlton.
From Carlton,ride to Melmerby, before turning off, signed to ‘West Witton’ and climbing steeply to Pen Hill. The summit is reached soon after crossing the cattle grid.
Once you’ve reached the summit, descent for 300 metres and then turn right, following the road as it runs alongside the horse training gallops (Common Lane).
At the next junction,turn right and cycle for 400 metres until a narrow road on the left is seen – take this and descend with care to the main Coverdale Road once more, heading left towards Middleham.
This road descends at speed into historic Middleham,but take care due to race horses training in the area. They use this road to get access to the gallops. Pass through Middleham and head back to Masham, once more riding past Jervaulx Abbey.
Time for cake at the cafe in the corner of the square, by the church.

Gravel Bike Coast to Coast: Lake District

Riding through the Lakes with Voom Nutrition

The great benefit of this route is that you can step off the train at Ravenglass and start riding. This tiny coastal hamlet is superb, easily accessible by rail and leads you directly into the hills of the Lake District. With Muncaster Castle here too, there’s options for accommodation at the start, and as you ride through Eskdale, there’s the famous Ravenglass miniture railway.

The legendary track of Walna Scar awaits you, as you descend into Coniston and the lake, before Grizedale Forest gives a new style of riding to the route. There’s a few bike hike sections, due to the steep sided valleys and bridleways, but overall,this first section of our U.K. gravel bike coast to coast route has some awesome gravel bike riding sections on dusty trails, with epic views. Get ready to ride Lake District gravel.

Refreshments & Where to Stay

Ravenglass is a small coastal hamlet, but there’s still ample places to stay, with an Inn and Muncaster Castle on hand. At Sedbergh, once again there’s ample choice, from bunkhouse to good quality Inn’s.

Character

This section has steep climbs, a bike hike and epic descents along the way, as well as a few useful tarmac sections that avoid poor trails for the gravel bike and which will help you speed along to better trails. Leaving Ravenglass, you’re immediately onto the Esk Trail gravel track and heading to the hills. It’s a varied route, with gravel, forest tracks and some technical riding sections such as Walna Scar Road. The trails become easier and less technical as you approach the Dales.

Route

Heading from the sand and sea at tiny but very quaint Ravenglass, cycle along the road, lined by beautiful small cottages, and onto the main roads. Then, climb towards Muncaster Castle, passing the car park for the castle (on the left), before taking the Esk Trail bridleway at the top of the hill, and cycling along the wide gravel path all the way into Easkdale and the Lake District National Park.
The Esk Trail finally exits onto the road by a Dutch barn and cottages just prior to Forge Bridge. Turn left onto the road and cycle the short distance on tarmac to Forge Bridge, then taking the bridleway to the right of the bridge. Cycle along this bridleway into the valley, as it follows the river. There’s an opportunity at Dalesgarth to cross over and have tea and cake at the famous Dalesgarth Station on the Ravenglass Railway.
Continuing on the bridleway, until a sign is reached for a bridleway junction for Stanley Ghyll Waterfall. Head along this, and follow the bridleway that eventually exits you onto the road at Austhwaite Brow. Stay on this road and follow it around to Seathwaite and start of the Walna Scar Road.
When you reach a junction on the left which is signed to Coniston (unsuitable for motor vehicles). Take this narrow lane, which eventually joins the famed and rocky Walna Sca Road (Bridleway Open to All Traffic), which drops on technical terrain towards Coniston.
Rest at Coniston, before leaving the village on the cycle track that runs parallel to the road towards Grizedale Forest. Exit the cycle path and cross onto the lane on the far side of Lake Coniston, signed to ‘Brantwood’, before joining the bridleway after 1/3 km that climbs into Grizedale Forest.

After a jaunt through the forest on excellent tracks, descend from near Moor Top on the bridleway that takes you to Hawkshead. Time now for tea and cake, before heading over the bridleways that take you to the dge of Lake Windermere, then riding along the lake to the ferry.
Once over the ferry, climb away from Windermere on the A5074 andafter Barker Knott Farm, take the track on the left (green Lane) eastwards.
Skirt around Gilpin Lake House and on the tracks around Thorneyfield, before joining the bridleway passing Crook Hall Farm.
At Underbarrow follow the quiet lane into Kendal for a break. Then, take the B6254 Old Hutton road out of Kendal towards Oxenholme. After Oxenholme, turn off left on the quiet lane to Millholme.
Now take quiet lanes that eventually lead to the bridleway at Aikrigg, then crossing the river and taking the tracks that lead to Sedbergh.

Riding the Route of the Settle to Carlisle Railway

A ride of discovery and history

One of the most famous rail journeys in the U.K., the Settle Carlisle road cycling route takes you from the historic Yorkshire Dales market town of Settle, all the way through the magnificent Dales National Park, to historic Carlisle and its wealth of Roman and medieval history.

Along the way, you’ll see some of the most magnificent viaducts in the country, and stop off for tea and cake (and cheese you choose) in Hawes, the market town at the head of Wensleydale. We’ve developed this ride to help you to discover cycling rides that have less impact on our countryside. Once you arrive at Carlisle, you can simply catch the train back to Settle; and, there’s ample railway stations along the way, if you choose to ride short sections without having to drive here.

Refreshments & Accommodation: Both Settle and Carlisle have a wealth of great places to stay. Check out our link to places at Booking.com (on this page). Hawes and Appleby have excellent choices for food and snacks along the ride too.

Route Character: It’s a long day in the saddle, unless you break the journey.If you do, then Hawes is an excellent spot, with a Youth Hostel and good hotels. There’s a long climb into the hills, on a reasonable country road to Ribblehead, then rolling roads to Hawes, before things get easier and more descents become the order of the day.

1. Head from the Mrket town of Settle on the road to Giggleswick, before taking the minor and very quiet lane signed to ‘Stackhouse’ and ‘Little Stainforth’.

2. Cross the small packhorse bridge near Stainforth Falls waterfall and follow the winding road to the main B6479 road – turn left and follow this to Harton in Ribblesdale, where you’ll see the first of the famous ‘3 Peaks’ hills – Pen-Y-Ghent, standing sublime to your right.

3. Continue climbing to the magnificent viaduct at Ribblehead.

4. From Ribblehead the road gets bleak, as you climb and roll towards Wensleydale and the market town of Hawes. There’s so much to see here, and some of you will want to rest overnight and enjoy the area.

5. Leave Hawes on the A684 road towards Sedbergh. On reaching Garsdale Head and the viaduct, turn off onto the A6259 towards Kirkby Stephen. The high hills to your right are where the infant river Ure is formed, as rain falls onto the mossy ground and falls down to the valley.

6. From Kirkby Stephen take the road towards Appleby in Westmoreland, before riding under the A66 main road and riding to Brampton and Milburn. The roads climb and roll just a little bit less now, as you ride on to Langwathby, in the land of red sandstone.

7. From Langwathby go a short distance on the A686,before turning off right onto the B6412 road though the Eden Valley and towards Lazenby.

8.Quiet roads now lead to to the border town of Carlisle and its historic train station.

A ride through Surrey and Sussex on country lanes to historic Chichester

Cycling routes in London along quiet roads are not common place. However, starting from Richmond, there are some excellent country lanes for cycling in Surrey and Sussex. This ride picks out the lanes and takes you through beautiful countryside, as you cycle to historic Chichester beneath the hills of the South Downs.

Character

It’s difficult to find quiet country roads in the Surrey and Sussex hills these days. However, this ride weaves around some beautiful quiet roads, with a few climbs thrown in, as it winds its way to Chichester.

You can either: take the train back, stay overnight and then cycle back along another route, or make a long day in the saddle. We’d recommend either an overnight stay or taking the train.

Route

The gpx file will keep you on track, however, here are some basic route tips.

1. Head away from Richmond and the park along the A307 towards Thames Ditton. At the junction (just before the golf course) head left onto Kingston Bypass, then immediately cross safely and take the Littleworth Road through the trees.

2. At Hare Lane Green turn right onto Milbourne Lane and follow this until the junction with the A244 Copsem Lane. Turn left.

3. After a short ride through trees, turn right onto Medway and follow this road until a junction near the Esher Common car park – turn left.

4.Follow the A307 Portsmouth Road into Cobham, leaving Cobham on the Downside Road, passing Cobham Park.

5. Cross over the M25 on your way to East Harsley, taking Crocknorth Road out of the village (south). At the junction and X roads with White Down Lane, turn right and ride towards Holmbury St Mary for a break.

6. Leave Holmbury on the B2126 towards Forest Green, but turn off after 1.5 km right towards Ewhirst and Cranleigh. Weave your way along towards Ewhurst Cricket Club. Ride into Cranleigh.

7. Leave Cranleigh towards Alfold, eventually meeting the Alfold Bypass and turning left. Cycle to Loxwood. Leave Loxwood on Vicarage Hill. After 1.2 km, with a layby to your left and junction opposite, take the junction right signed to Kirdforth and Petworth.

8. At Petworth, take a break at Tiffins for coffee and cake.

9. Leave Petworth on the A285 for 9km, then turning off right, opposite St Mary’s Farm, signed to Goodwood. Weave your way now through Goodwood and into Chichester.

Around the Howgills

AROUND THE HOWGILLS

This is a superb route for wild and rugged scenery, on good roads with long climbs and great descents. When riding in autumn and winter, you really do need to make sure that your bike is well serviced, that you have tools and inner tubes and good cold weather clothing. It’s also wise to use a rear light during daytime riding, as tree lined country roads with hidden sunlight can make it difficult for cars to pick you out early. Anyway, to the route.

We start this ride from Oxenholme railway station near to Kendal, as you can take the train to the start and finish and enjoy an environmentally friendly adventure. Nearby Kendal can provide excellent opportunities for a bite to eat as you finish the ride too, and the ride is also easy to do if you’re planning on a few days in the Lake District. Make sure that you check the weather reports prior to setting off, as the Howgills are beautiful but remote and wild.

The Howgills provide sublime views to those driving up the M6 motorway and passing through Cumbria. Close to the road, these wild hills stand proudly and defiant. The climbs are steep and at times brutal, but the rewards are epic. It’s time to take a closer look at the hills that sit between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales.

Nearby Kendal has everything required and the two national parks in the area have a wealth of great accommodation choices.

Character

A long and remote route amidst the hills. Weather can be wild here, so be prepared. The climbs are long and steep, but the views are amazing.

Route

Set off from Oxenholme station on the B6254 signed towards Old Hutton. After a very short distance turn off left into Hayclose Lane prior to the Station Inn.
At the junction with the famous A684 Dales road, turn right towards Sedbergh and continue on the A684 until you cross the M6 motorway. Once over the motorway bridge, turn off right into the narrow lane towards Killington. This beautiful narrow lane takes you on a true country cycling journey, with amazing scenery. However, take care along the winding lane for oncoming traffic; for whilst this is minimal, the narrowness of the road enquires attention.
After 2 km, turn sharply left to Killington village and ride through towards the B6256 road, climbing most of the way, with meadows and hedgerows beside you. Join the B6256 and turn left and continue towards the A684 and the famous Howgills literary town of Sedbergh.
After a brief stop in Sedbergh for any refreshments, the A684 is swapped for the A683 towards Kirkby Stephen. The climbing continues as you cross remote and exposed countryside and climb towards Kirkby Stephen.
At the junction with the A685 turn left towards Newbiggin on Lune and ride into the village itself once reached. Then cycle along the minor country road that runs parallel with the A685, through Kelleth, eventually crossing over the A685 and onto Tebay. Now cycle along the old A6 road that follows alongside the route of the M6 south. Turn off to Kendal and enjoy the descent after some tough climbs.
Kendal has ample places to choose from for food and drinks, before you ride the short distance back to Oxenholme, or simply take a train from Kendal itself.

Easingwold has everything that you need, as does historic Helmsley. Porters tea rooms in Helmsley serve the very best cake and coffee. Helmsley would be a superb holiday location, with its castle, nearby Reivaulx Abbey and so many great places to eat. The roads nearby are ideal for all cyclists too.

Character

Heading from the calm flat roads of Easingwold, the route soon climbs and takes in some tough hills, passing by historic abbeys and buildings along the way. Riding on mainly quiet roads, this is one of the best rides you’ll find anywhere in the UK.

Route

Head out of Easingwold towards Crayke. However, at the edge of Easingwold take the road left (Oulston Road) signed towards Oulston and Coxwold.
Climb steeply as you approach the village of Oulston, then descending at speed, passing Newburgh Priory as the exhilarating descent eases off. At Coxwold turn right on the rolling climbs towards Ampleforth.
On reaching Byland Abbey, continue towards Ampleforth passing through Wass village. Continue towards Ampleforth and once through the main part of the village, then take the junction left and climb (Beacon Bank) towards Sproxton. The climb is tough, but once you summit, the descent down through the woodland lined road is straight and fast and epic. Take care, as this is a fast descent.
On reaching the T junction and busy road, turn left and head towards the A170 road junction. At the A170 turn right and ride to Helmsley, descending fast as you approach. Porters tea rooms are on the right just before the market place.
Once refreshed, ride along the A170 for half a mile. As you leave Easingwold, a junction on the right is signed towards ‘Harome’, take this road. It’s a quitre road with tight and twisting descents, so take care as they can surprise you. Once through picturesque Harome, take the minor road on the right signed towards ‘Nunnington.’ After 1.5 km further,turn right towards Nunnington.
Climb gently out of Nunnington and then steadily climb to Hovingham, the childhood home of the Duchess of Kent. Hovingham is a superb place to take a coffee and a few more pictures before continuing on, with sublime meadows and woodland views as you climb steeply towards Brandsby. In particlar, look out for the stone bridge in the meadow on the right,seemingly leading nowhere, but looking quite beautiful.
Just before reaching Brandsby, the seemingly endless steep climbs ease off and you descend on a superb twisting road into Brandsby village. Once through Brandsby turn off right at the junction in trees and climb easily to Crayke village.
At Crayke, once you reach the high point on the main village road, it bends left, but take the junction on the right signed to Easingwold. Only a few easy kilometres now before cake and coffee in Easingwold’s Georgian Market Place.

Jubilee Tower Lancaster Cycle Route

JUBILEE TOWER, ABBEYSTEAD

A classic Lancashire cycling route

This short but rewarding road cycling route in Lancashire takes you into the hills and open countryside, visiting the climb of Jubilee Tower before descending back to the village of Garstang. It’s a route for an easy evening or to lik in to a longer ride in rural Lancashire.

Route Information

Distance: 24 miles
Ascent: 1,550 feet

Character: A gently undulating climb to a high and wild moor, topped by a preposterous folly. Sensational views in clear weather, with the Welsh, Manx and Lakeland hills spanning the westward horizon.

Route

1. Head out of Garstang on the Lancaster Road (i.e. pedal North).

2. Turn right at the mini-roundabout into Green Lane East and gain a narrow lane barred to cars.

3. Turn right at the end and meander through the meadows of Wyresdale to the village of Scorton.

4. Turn right at the Priory into Snow Hill Lane and climb over the M6 and into the Forest of Bowland AONB. The sassier lasses round these parts buy tee shirts such that the words “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” undulate across their chests.

5. Turn left at the top and follow a high terrace, dodging jaywalking pheasants as you go.

6. Another left turn at the end (no signage) then pay heed to the Ford sign as it can reach respectable depth and the surface is rather too cobbled for hitting at high speed on skinny tyres.

7. Drop to the main Scorton-Abbeystead road and turn right. Follow this up a series of rises until a steep pull out of narrow gulch where the road runs parallel to a stream.

8. At the top of this climb, turn left (unsigned) to a spectacular, winding descent into Abbeystead.

9. Turn left and then, where the road turns 90 degrees to the left, go straight on, signposted “Quernmore 5”

10. Climb through plover and hare country, turning left at the top to the Tower. Look on the verge on the right for the memorial to cyclist Peter Nowell.

11. Plunge to Quernmore Crossroads, turning left. Try to combine admiring the view with staying in the saddle on the hairpin.

12. Follow the switchback southwards, re-crossing the motorway on Whams Lane

13. Left at the bottom will take you into the hamlet of Hollins Lane, convergence with the A6 and the homeward leg

Fylde Coast Cycle Route

A ride around the Lancashire coast

Route Information

Stats: 49 miles of reasonably flat riding

Character

A great loop around the westernmost lump of Lancashire. Although Blackpool lacks certain finesse, the atmosphere is generally cheery and the views are stunning. On a clear day, the panorama includes Wales, the Isle of Man, the Lakes, The Howgills, The Dales (Ingleborough’s bony crown is pre-eminent), the Bowland Hills, Winter Hill and Ashurst Beacon. The short ferry hop makes this a memorable excursion.

Route

1. Head out of Garstang on Moss Lane, over the humpback bridge. Cross the A6 with care at the Bellflower.

2. Turn right into the ominously-named Kilcrash Lane. Follow this through flat farmland to Pilling and turn left into Head Dyke Lane

3. At Preesall, turn right to Knott End and follow this down to the slipway. Ferries generally run on the hour and half-hour and the trip takes all of five minutes. Expect to pay £1.50 for you and a further 50p for the bike.

4. At the farther shore, take up the promenade and dodge the hordes of strollers, giddy kiddies and unleashed dogs through Bispham and Blackpool.

5. At Squire’s Gate, join the main road heading south (there’s a good continuous cycle lane) but you can duck back onto promenade at St Anne’s if the main road is too busy for your liking.

6. Rejoin the main road, then turn left near Lytham Windmill into Station Road.

7. Meander through to the incongruous picture-postcard village of Wrea Green, its thatched roofs looking ill-suited to Lancashire’s rainfall.

8. Go straight on at the church (village stores on your right) and (easily missed) take a shortcut by a wall (just before the main road) into Kirkham. Cross the dual carriageway with care.

9. In Kirkham, turn left into Carr Lane and zigzag North and East to Inskip.

10. Turn left on the B5269 then right (after the village) into Pinfold Lane.

11. Turn right into St Michael’s Lane at the end and pass Myerscough agricultural college to join the A6 at Guy’s Thatched Hamlet.

12. Pootle north on the A6 then follow signs forking right back into Garstang.

The Bowland Badass, whilst starting in the quiet village of Garstang, is an epic 167 mile road cycling route in Lancashire and Yorkshire, with a series of epic and tough climbs. It was run as a sportive, and we’ve included the route here, so that you can ride it yourself at any time, either in a one day adventure, or as a cycle tour over a weekend.

Refreshments

Garstang itself has ample opportunities for refreshments. Along the route the options are obvious, with towns and villages such as Caton, Brookhouse, Puddle Ducks Tea Room at Dunsop Bridge and Gisburn Forest. However, common sense dictates that you will be cycling in isolated areas and so do need to carry sufficient food and drink along with you.

Character

Long, tough, unrelenting but rewarding – how’s that for a route description. The route takes you cycling around the lanes and hills of the Forest Of Bowland, with steep climbs and descents on isolated country roads. Strong legs and good bike handling is needed. Print off the OS Map and off you go…

Route

Head out of Garstang towards Scorton and cross the M6. The route is listed by the climbs as they come. The first climb comes at Catshaw Fell at 6.7 miles and has an average gradient of 3.6% and climbs for 2 miles.
Climb 2 comes at Blea Tarn Hill at 16.6 miles and rises at an average of 8% for half a mile.
Climb 3 is at Littledale after 22.5 mile and rises at an average of 4.5% for 1.2 miles.
Climb 4 is again in Littledale, at 24.97 miles and an average gradient of 9.4% for 0.54 miles.
Climb 5 is at the Jubilee Hill after 27.4 miles and has an average gradient of 5.4% for 2 miles.
Climb 6 is at Trough of Bowland after 34.3 miles and has an average gradient of 4.4% for 1.8 miles.
Climb 7 is at Long Knotts after 40.74 miles and has an average gradient of 4.9% for 1.27 miles.
Climb 8 is Hall Hill at 47.52 miles and has an average gradient of 5.6% for 1.3 miles.
Climb 9 is Marl Hill at 49.23 miles and has an averahe gradient of 6.4% for 0.92 miles.
Climb 10 is Beacon Hill at 57.17 miles and has an average gradient of 5.5% for 0.97 miles.
Climb 11 is Knotts Hill at 64.35 miles and has an average gradient of 3.4% for 2 miles.
Climb 12 is Bowland Knotts at 71.77 miles and has an average gradient of 4.5% for 3.28 miles.
Climb 13 is the famous Cross of Greet, after 82.33 miles and with an average gradient of 3.6% for 4.73 miles.
Climb 14 is Merrybent Hill after 89.82 miles and has an average gradient of 6.3% for thankfully only 0.67 miles.
Climb 15, the hilltops halfway point is Waddington Fell at 97.15 miles, well over half way mileage wise, and has an averahe gradient of 6.2% for 2.29 miles. Only 15 more summits left

Let’s continue the climbing theme now as we head into the final stages of this epic ride…

16. Climb 16 is the famous Pendle Hill of Pendle Witches legend and comes after cycling for 106 miles. It has an averahe gradient of 4.4% for 2.9 miles.

17. Climb 17 is Barley Hill at 110.22 miles and has an average gradient of 10.2% for 0.49 miles thankfully!

18. Climb 18 is Sabden Fold at 112.41 miles and has an average gradient of 6.5% for a mere 0.24 miles.

19. Climb 19 is the Nick of Pendle at 115.4 miles and has an average gradient of 10% for 0.91 miles.

20. Climb 20 is Whalley Nab at 120.72 miles and has an average gradient of 10.9% for 0.68 miles.

21. Climb 21 is Little Town Hill at 127 miles and has an average gradient of 3.5% for 1.55 miles.

22. Climb 22 is Birdy Brow at 134.9 miles and has an average gradient of 11.4% for a thankfully short 0.74 miles.

23. Climb 23 is Longridge Fell at 138.25 miles and has an average gradient of 6.1% for 0.82 miles.

24. Climb 24 is the first of 2 climbs at Chipping and comes at 142.9 miles. It has an average gradient of 4.7% for 0.74 miles.

25. Climb 25 is again at Chipping and comes after cycling for 143.71 miles. With an average gradient of 6.7% for a short 0.48 miles, it’s a chance to start thinking about reaching the finish back at Garstang.

26. Locally, Beacon Fell is a well known climb and it’s easy to see why. This beautiful spot comes at the 145.71 miles point and has an average gradient of 5% for 1 mile.
