VTOPO launched the gravel route guide at the end of last year for the Departement de Vaucluse, probably better known for its Provence region, renowned for the fields of lavender and the classic climbs of Mt Ventoux. It’s a paradise for road riding, mtb routes and is one of the first areas of France to have been developed for gravel riding. There’s a good number of circular routes to keep even the most hardened of all-road riders happy for days, along with a 488km, point to point, Grand Traversée (GTV) route as well.

There are 30 routes ranging from 19km all the way up to 89km with a not insignificant 2300m+ that takes in the slopes of Mt Ventoux. Their level of difficulty is identified the same as with ski runs, green, blue, red or black, spread across the department. The GTV gravel has a hefty 11,200m of elevation gain traveling east from Orange, deep into the department, taking in many of the area’s best gravel highlights, ending in the small town of Cavaillon, actually only a few km south of Orange. It takes in parts of many of the 30 circular routes and uses interconnecting tracks between them that are only ridden as part of the GTV. Although it passes through some more remote areas, ideal for some wild camping, there are plenty of brick and mortar accommodation options en route for a light bikepacking option.

I went along for the Vélo Passion Avignon exhibition, a festival of cycling in all its forms unique in Europe, including for the first time, 2 days of gravel riding with an overnight bikepack option. Lino Lazzerini was also there, one of the pioneers of the early Tour de France races with his collection of original bikes from the era, including his personal race bike. He had quite the stories to tell about racing unsupported over unpaved cols. The original unsupported gravel races?

The weather however, thwarted the riding. Not one to shy away from a wet ride, but the Conseil Départemental issued a weather warning for the Saturday so there was no choice for the organisers but to cancel the ride and the overnight camping. Probably the right decision as the weather on Saturday was vicious winds and heavy rain, not the safest of conditions to be out on wooded trails or the roads. Sunday was also forecast to be torrential and continuous rain.

I was staying with Nico and Eugénie in their chambre d’hôte Domaine des Lavarines, part of the network of cycling specific accommodation in the region. They also run their own brand bike sales and hire business Cicada Concept within the same plot. They offer a comprehensive range from made-to-measure gravel and mtb titanium, carbon and alloy mtb, gravel, cargo and ebikes. Despite the weather forecast, they had gotten me excited about the planned route for Sunday over dinner, as Nico was part responsible for designing the route along with the organising body, Ventoux Gravel Adventure. (That’s me in the title image on a Shand Bahookie drop bar from riding the Grand Traversée de Vaucluse mtb) There isn’t much he doesn’t know about riding in the area and if there’s an area that he doesn’t, he can link you up with a local who does. The food is wholesome and tasty, cooked up by Eugene. The breakfast is not the usual, sugary fix either, but wholesome too, consisting of various options including porridge, nuts, seeds, dried and fresh fruit, perfect for long days out on the bike.

Based in Morières les Avignon, surrounded by vineyards, at the edge of the Vaucluse Massif (Monts de Vaucluse, Luberon et Ventoux), their chambre d’hôte is in a quiet location, despite being a stone’s throw from the historic town of Avignon with its TGV access. With their shop and workshop on site, get your bike worked on if needed or hire from their titanium gravel or electric gravel and mtb fleet, ideal for the regional terrain which is technical at times depending on route choice.

From Cicada Concept, it’s a short ride along quiet roads to the village of Velleron, the start of the route for Sunday. Setting off in full Gore waterproofs, including their new All-Road gore-tex jacket, in full expectation of the heavens to open not long into the ride.

Velloron is a small village with a boulangerie and really good pâtisserie chez Guillaume Rouget, ideal for some tasty goodies for the ride. The 60km route heads south out of the village, destination Gordes as the (almost) midway point, one of numerous village perchés, built high in the hillside. 40 minutes into the ride and there was no sign of the impending downpours, so I stripped back to arm/leg warmers and the Gore Spirit gilet. Tempting fate perhaps with dark clouds in the distance, but it stayed dry throughout the ride! The forecast couldn’t have been more wrong!

The route is a mix of quiet back country single track roads, smooth gravel and more rugged gravel+ tracks. Although relatively brief in length, it manages to take in many of the area’s highlights.

You’ll descend through the grounds of the Abbaye Notre Dame de Sénanque, surrounded by its fields of lavender, if you manage to time the ride between mid June and mid July. The Abbaye is worth a visit if you’ve time and if you’re a honey aficionado, they produce their own on site. It’s a reasonable climb out, but the village perché of Gordes isn’t far off, an ideal place for a refuel. As you enter the village centre, there is a sandwich bar, nestled between 2 restaurants, on the left. Their sandwiches are filling and hit just the spot.

You’re quickly back on tree lined trails south of Gordes, some of them more gravel+, wild and challenging on a gravel bike, but fun to ride. Back country road and smoother gravel lead through picturesque villages. Grab an ice cream and coffee for a quick respite alongside the river.

The route back to Velleron takes in a cool section of gravel canal path after Fontaine de Vaucluse and over a viaduct, standing 25m above the Sorgue river. Just be careful not to drop your bike in the water on the walk over it! It’s rolling quiet roads for the final km back to Velleron.

Once back at Cicada HQ, it was more chat about the region’s riding and the newly created Grand Traversée de Vaucluse gravel over another hearty dinner. If the GTV MTB I rode back in March is anything to go by, the GTV gravel will be quite some ride. I would suggest avoiding the holiday period of mid July to the end of August as the roads will be clogged with motor vehicles, especially around Mt Ventoux and many of the forest tracks are closed due to seasonal fire risk. If you’ve not ridden in the region before, it regularly experiences high temperatures in mid summer. Try to time the ride with the flowering of the lavender fields from early June, it’s a spectacular show for the visual and olfactory senses.

The GTV gravel starts in Orange and ends in Cavaillon, easy access and exit points, not far separated as the crow flies, but the route winds its way throughout the department taking some of the area’s best riding and views. WIld camp or use any of the multitude of accommodation options en route.

With time to spare before heading home, it was a detour via the col de Murs, Sault and the Gorges de la Nesque. Turning off the climb just before reaching the col de Murs, there is a network of gravel tracks over the top, worth returning to explore more. Back onto singletrack road, the route to Méthamis is a stunning ride, winding around the hills’ contours, with a view down into the gorge, a section well worth adding into any cycling itinerary in the area. From here it was a ride up the Gorge de la Nesque, a favourite ride and another classic, through its tunnels hewn out of the rock face with stunning views as you slowly wind your way up.

There is a gravel track part way through the gorge that starts near the bottom of the road climb. It’s a cool experience to be deep in the gorge, but it doesn’t go all the way, turning south before the gorge narrows, but the exit gets rocky and is a hike-a-bike/steep for a time. Once out of the gorge, it’s a flat ride to Sault, with its numerous refuel options. Grab something to go and sit in the public garden in the village centre with a view of Mt Ventoux.

It was onwards to Bédoin the next day via the upper road north of the gorge to grab some patisseries from a favourite boulangerie on the village’s main street to fuel the climb up Mt Ventoux. A mandatory montée when in the area and this time via the off road track. It starts not far from Bédoin centre, along small roads before the turn off along an inconspicuous singletrack, broken road. It finishes 1km above Chalet Reynard, leaving 5km to the col. It doesn’t feature on the GTV gravel as it’s officially designated as an mtb (vtt) route. The bottom section is the hardest, chunky and loose, but it can be ridden on a gravel bike (I had 42mmx700 WTB Resolutes tyres) with the upper km on smoother terrain.

Ventoux was completely enshrouded by dense cloud when I started, but the cloud cover can change in an instant on this peak due to its infamous winds. It was worth the effort heading up despite the gloomy outlook as the cloud dispersed and I was rewarded with stunning autumn colours and a grand view from the top. Do come prepared though, as it could be the absolute reverse with cloud blowing in with the weather changing rapidly for the worst.

From the top, my route took me back down via the mountain’s ski resort of Mt Serein (yes, a ski resort in Provence) to Malaucène and back to Avignon for the train home. One more camp out next to a vineyard before the final few km to Avignon. Sunrise across the vines through the darkening clouds was pretty special. There’s multiple days worth of All-road/gravel riding in the Vaucluse, with a real diversity of terrain, through gorges, past vineyards and fields of lavender. Even if you’re planning to bikepack, do spend a night or 2 with Nico and Eugénie at Domaine des Lavarines for an informative and tasty culinary experience. Great hosts who have been in the department all their lives, helping to develop the mtb and gravel cycling scene.

Summary

If you want to comprehensively explore the département, stay a few days in different areas, such as down south in the Luberon, then perhaps Sault or further north at the dedicated gravel centre at Rasteau. The lavender fields in bloom are quite the experience, but personally Spring and Autumn are a favourite time to do a trip through the Vaucluse.

There are mountain huts along the way, and good options for small hotels and B&B slightly off route as you travel. You’ll maybe also want to spend the odd night under the stars. We’ve linked in to the wider expertise of the Tour des Combins website, to give you best information.

It’s also up to you to be sensible, and to take reasonable provisions and equipment with you on a Bikepacking trip such as this.

Character

This is a difficult route, and it should only be undertaken by experienced people with a good level of fitness, and people with good navigational skills. Don’t always rely on electronic devices to point your way; especially when high in the Alps. The hard sections are rewarded though, with swooping descents and technical trails that bring miles of smiles.

Route

The Tour des Combins begins at one of the great passes of the Alps – the Gran San Bernardo, in the heart of the Pennine Alps. It’s a tough and rewarding ride, which you’ll need at least three days to complete, and to add a few days more to, if you want a more relaxed trip.

Situated between the Mont Blanc massif and the Matterhorn, the route circumnavigates the slopes of the Combins bordering Italy and Switzerland. Accommodation options include the many mountains huts: COL DE MILLE HUT, BRUNET HUT, PANOSSIÈRE F-X BAGNOUD HUT, CHANRION HUT, and the LETEY HUT in Champillon.

It’s a mixture of epic singletrack, technical trails and easier tracks, with some hike a bike thrown into the mix, especially as you climb to the Fenêtre de Durand (2,797 m). Using elements of the ancient Via Francigena pilgrim trail, a 1800km medieval trail between Canterbury UK and Rome, it takes on the alpine valleys of Valle d’Aosta and Menouve, as it heads into coniferous woods, surrounded by the imposing peaks of Mont Vèlan, Gelè, and the Grand Combin. It is simply not worthwhile writing too detailed a route description here. Download the GPX file and have good maps and a compass with you and ensure that your navigation skills match your thirst for adventure.

However, here are a few short route tips. You initially climb on tracks, then descent to a point in the hills above the village of Creton, before climbing now to the high point of the route, on the border between Italy and Switzerland. From here you descend and can use the Cabane de Chanrion CAS as an overnight halt. The route then descends the vally to the village of Fionnay, before heading upwards again and into more forested hills, climbing and descending on epic tracks along the way, before a long climb to the Col de Mille and the refuge.

The route then descends towards the valley and Bourg Saint Pierre, before a final climb, passing Lac des Toules (Lake) as you head back to the Statua di San Bernardo.

Stats: 148.8 km and 6,941 metres of ascent

Stats wise, the route was about 151km with 7100m of climbing overall, reaching a high point of over 2600m. We rode from Chamonix, but you can choose any start point.

Day 1 53km 3553m+ (options of 2 télécabine rides reducing climbing by 1800m)
Day 2 54km 2133m+
Day 3 44km with 1400m+

Refreshments & Where to Stay

The Chamonix valley is a good base for starting things off, and there’s ample options along the route, but we recommend some using mountain huts, making it a true bikepacking adventure.

The Tour du Mont Blanc is one of the most iconic routes in Europe, crossing through 3 countries and made infamous by the annual exploits of 1000’s of ultra runners racing its full 170m length at the UTMB in August. Its technical trails reach heights of over 2600m, for 10,000m of elevation gain with grand views atop every col. High mountain refuges offering hearty feeds are plentiful en route for those opting not to spend the night under the stars, all in stunning locations. It’s not a long route in biking terms, but it’s not to be underestimated for its physical challenge!

Route General

Although the TMB is essentially a hiking path, much of it mountain singletrack, the mtb route options vary in length from the more direct 151km route we followed bikepacking style to 5/6 day 280km+ options, with more lift assisted availability. There is a record, of course, for the fastest self supported traverse of the official 170km route at just over 19 hours, but opting for a more leisurely pace allows you to get the most out of riding this stunning track.

Our chosen variant was a bit shorter, but meant less pushing and more pedalling whilst still retaining the highlights of the TMB. My co-bikepacker for this mini adventure was Alan Colville, a veteran of marathon racing, but who had yet to experience bikepacking. What a great place to start! We opted to be fully self sufficient, carrying light weight tents (I had an MSR 1 person Carbon Reflex), a stove and an Aeropress for the obligatory sunrise coffee. Both of us turned up.in Gore C7 2in1 shorts, ideal all weather long distance wear!

My ride was the Pinnacle Ramin3, a bike with a versatile dual personality. Trail bike one weekend, an ideal bikepacking rig on another. The only part that was swapped out were the tyres; the supplied WTB Trail Boss for lighter, more xc tuned WTB Rangers in a 2.25 width. An alpkit frame bag fitted perfectly into the front triangle, ideal for food and stove portage. All sleeping gear fitted into the front bags, with the tent stowed in the saddle bag along with dry/warm clothes. Despite a forecasted ideal weather window, wet and cold weather gear was still packed. This is the high mountains after all and storms can catch you out unprepared. Besides, this trip was about being comfortable, no suffering here, with warm clothes for evenings and mornings!

Water wise, you’re never far from a source in the Alpes, especially on this popular route, so it’s not necessary to carry much, 2 750ml is easily sufficient.

The 2nd lift wasn’t open yet anyway, so do check summer opening times if you’d prefer to use the lifts where possible.

Riding anticlockwise from Les Houches, the dirt road climb up to the Col de Voza came all too quickly. This is the 1st lift assist option, missing out this steep track. An 18% average, ramping up to 30%. Need a caffeine refuel after that? The col top cafe is open from early summer! No less steep is the descent, loose and dusty 4×4 track. Caution not to miss the left hand turn, otherwise it’s a tarmac descent into Contamines!

Be wary of shop closing times outside of the official summer season, as they all close between 13h00 and 15h30! We managed to mistime our arrival in Contamines after a relaxed mid morning start, but a few restaurants were open. Being Coeliac, food options were limited for Alan, but we managed to keep him fed along the way. Buckwheat galettes were a great option.

The climb up to the high point of the col de la Croix du Bonhomme is probably the toughest of the route, with a sizeable chunk.of hike-a-bike along the top half, mostly due to the unusual lingering snow from 2200m.

High above les Contamines, we approached a bowl surrounded by high peaks, with seemingly no obvious way onwards! It was off and pushing towards the col along tech hiking trail. Not particularly exciting knowing you have a lengthy push ahead, mostly due to the snow, but the endpoint is truly worth the effort. Wet and sometimes deep snow added to.the adventure! From a windswept col du Bonhomme, the snow clad trail to the higher Croix du Bonhomme continued upwards following the mountain’s contours, disappearing into the low slung clouds.

After a couple of sections lugging bikes across steep snow fields, the refuge was a welcome sight through parting cloud. Back on the bikes for a brief descent to the refuge.

Having arrived later than planned, we took advantage of dinner on offer, having arrived with minutes to spare before they closed the kitchen! A great decision as it turned out, with gluten free polenta and a hearty beef stew on the menu. Not so palatable if you were vegetarian though. Even with the inviting warmth of the refuge, tents provided our accommodation, pitched with a glorious view of the surrounding mountains. Our day’s efforts were rewarded with nature showing off at both sunset and sunrise.

Once back on bikes, the descent in the early morning glow was stunning! Apart from the occasional dismount over more jagged terrain than we could ride on loaded bikes, it was an otherwise real endorphin charge to start the day.

It wasn’t long before the route headed back up. The 360° views from the Col de la Seigne at 2550m made up for the lung busting climb. What a place to linger, warm sunshine and snow capped mountain views in every direction, topped off by yet another cracking big mountain descent.

From here we dropped into Italy, for a ride along valley singletrack and past Refuge Elisabetta, the planned overnight stop, but the mountaintop stop was a way better option!

Meandering up winding 4×4 tracks that doubled up as ski.piste in the winter, we were soon in the peaks high above Courmayeur. A huge descent dropped us swiftly into the Italian ski resort, non technical, but steep and super dusty! Sunshine glinting off the haze of dust kicked up by our wheels.

A small shop just up from the bus station, en route, provided plenty of gluten free food for Alan with outside seating for a relaxed lunch break. Pricey of course though.

8km of pavement pounding up out of Courmayeur was one of the mtb detours off the official TMB route, avoiding a long hike-a-bike section. Over the top and we entered into a deep sided valley following the river trail. If you have time, the crystal clear waters are perfect for a quick dip! A refuge at the valley’s end provided an ideal refuel and coffee stop before the long climb out up and over Col Ferret, along the trail we could see disappearing up the mountainside.

Coffee & cake – image by Scott Cornish

Switchback fire road eased us in, up to the refuge Elena, before unrideable hiking path took over, pitching up steeply at times! Grand views of the length of the valley and cascading glaciers eased wincing calves.

Despite the windchill, we took our time at the col taking in the 360° views. With the sun on our backs, we flew down lingering snow fields and flowing mountain singletrack, dropping into Switzerland towards Champex, our next destination. Not before stomach’s demanded food though! A well timed refuge just up from the valley floor provided dinner, but at a hefty expense!

Tree lined valley single track followed the flow of the river, the kind of trail you wanted to just keep riding all day long. Wanting to pitch up before darkness fell, we found a quiet spot on the climb out of the valley. The MSR Reflex tent is quick and easy to set up and pretty roomy for a single person tent.

The sunrise ride up through tree lined singletrack was stunning. We rode in silence just the sounds of effort, taking in nature’s show, riding in and out of the sunbeams streaming through the trees.

Another good food store find in Champex, just before the lake, for Alan. Stomachs full with a 2nd breakfast, we bimbled along more river side trail, spinning out the legs in anticipation of the penultimate climb. Well known for its steep slopes bringing UTMB competitors to their knees, we understood why as it became gradually steeper and looser under tyre, forcing defeat and pushing, much to the intrigue of hikers as we hustled past them with our loaded bikes.

Over numerous river crossings and up tight switchbacks, we quickly gained height on the trail’s steep slopes. The final 2km was at least rideable along the ridge edge, and what a view! Now above the treeline, the Valais valley stretched out far infront of us. The ridge top refuge had to be an obligatory stop for coffee and cafe! An ancient summer refuge with the original kitchen, still churning out homemade treats and tasty coffee. Worth a ride out from Chamonix as a day trip.

Trying not to indulge too much in the delicious cake as there was a steep 2km climb to the top of the descent and what a descent. Cracking singletrack, a real mix of flow, technical and steep, all whilst avoiding hikers! Amazing! From the col de Forclaz, it was still downwards, smooth tarmac connecting us swiftly to the final climb up past the hillside hamlet of Les Jeurs. Non technical ski piste tracks brought us to the col de Possettes and far reaching views of the Chamonix valley 1000m below. From here it was all downhill!

Rocky, contoured ski piste dropped us into le Tour and the start of the tree lined singletrack of Petit Balcon Nord trail, flowing all the way into the edge of town.

Stinking cyclists are probably best using the outside seating! A large, cold fruit smoothie helped soothe tired legs, alongside a coffee of course.

What a ride. Camp out or use the refuges, it’s an iconic trail worth doing despite the hike-a-bike sections. This alternative does employ a couple of detours to minimise pushing, namely the sections Entreves to Planpinicieux and via Les Jeurs instead of Col de Balme which is unrideable in this direction. If the weather allows, overnight up high as the effort is well worth it for the spectacular sunrise.

We rode in early June avoiding the summer holiday crowds as it gets busy on the TMB route. Numerous companies offer guided longer tours if you don’t want to bikepack it and keep off the official route.
