Masham Moor Gravel Bike Route

Adventure cycling on the edge of the Dales

This short but testing ride will take you from the historic market town of Masham – home to Theakston’s Brewery – onto the epic moorland trails of the Dales. These dusty and rocky tracks are a great place to explore away from the crowds, and this ride leads to some amazing descents, through lined gravel lanes, and finishing through the local Nutwith Woods, to Nutwith Common and back into Masham for refreshments.

Masham is a great place to stay for a weekend gravel riding, and this route is a great introductory ride to set you off with.

Masham is a great place to stay, and the White Bear, owned by Theakston’s Brewery is our choice. The café on the square, also known as ‘Johnny Baghdad’s’ is our café of choice too.

Character

A route with a tough climb to begin with, but rewarded with epic gravelly descents and winding tracks on good terrain. A superb introduction ride the gravel routes in the Yorkshire Dales area.

Nutwith Woods is owned by the Swinton Estate, so please abide by the signs and be considerate when passing through this area.

Route

From the market square in Masham, ride out towards the old Methodist Chapel on Thorpe Road, then turning off to the right and heading past Swinton Park as you climb the steep hill of Warthermarske.
Keep on to the village of Ilton, at 3 miles, then turn off on the left onto the bridleway and head up and over Masham Moor towards the track junction at High Langwith Cross (OS Maps).
Keep on towards Arnagill Moor, until you reach the track junction on the left, signed for the ‘Six Dales Trails’ – take this.
Continue along this fast and dusty track until it descents and evens out alongside trees on the right, and a track junction is reached above Ramsgill. Turn left here and climb the steep track alongside Covell House Moor (OS map) towards Dallowgill, passing through a gate before descending into Dallowgill itself.
Follow the broken road alongside the moorland, then turning off at Carlesmoor and following this track around the winding terrain above Carlesmoor Beck.
As you leave this track and rejoin the road, turn left and then almost immediately left again, onto the bridleway towards Bagwith House. Now follow the Ripon Rowell signs until you meet the bridleway at Wreaks Lane, turning down this and descending to Wreaks Beck. Then, climb up to the farms and take the bridleway on the left that climbs to Bramley Grange.
At the road, turn right and ride to Nutwith Woods, then abiding by signs as you descent the woodland to Nutwith Common.
Follow the road back into Masham – voila!

Riding across the Moors with Voom Nutrition

The market town of Northallerton is the county town for North Yorkshire and sits perfectly between the Dales and Moors National Parks. It has ample accommodation options, god places to eat and a great local bike shop too.

Nearby Osmotherley is a gem of a village and leads you to epic riding and wonderful views. The Moors aren’t simply about wild and barren heather, there’s beautiful valleys and lush wooodlands and forests too. We use part of the Moors to Sea route as we approach Robin Hoods Bay, giving you the best opportunity to see the varied landscapes of this quite extraordinary part of Yorkshire.

Refreshments & Where to Stay

Northallerton is the obvious choice, with ample options for all budgets. There’s also a great Youth Hostel at nearby Osmotherley, then further along at Helmsley too, which is the home of THmas the Baker, so cakes and sandwiches abound in and around the quaint market square. Further along is the famed Lion Inn on the Rosedale moor, and the coast has lots on offer, including great fish and chips!

Character

This section has steep climbs and epic descents along the way, as well as useful tarmac sections that avoid poor trails for the gravel bike and which will help you speed along to better trails. You’ll need to follow the gpx and watch your navigation, especially on the woodland sections. However, the trails are perfect for gravel riding and you’ll ease along to the coast.

Route

Take the quiet lanes and tracks from Northallerton that avoid the busier main road, and head towards the village of Bullamoor and the Moors.
Cross the A19 with care, then ride to the village of Nether Silton, before climbing gently through the forest and onto the Drovers Way.
Once on the Drovers Way, turn right and climb up to the ridge. After a few short miles of smooth riding, take the bridleway that drops you to the hamlet of Hawnby, then take the trail that weaves through the tree lined valley to beautiful Rievaulx Abbey.
From Rievaulx, climb the steep road that joins the main road and speeds you down into Helmsley, where ample refreshments await. Our personal favourite is Porters Cafe and their lemon meringue pie.
A bridleway off Carlton Road at Helmsley then leads you northwards across meadows towards forests, before a track is taken eastwards, leading you through trees on super tracks.
A series of quiet road sections and super moorland tracks lead you onwards to the Lion Inn in Rosedale.

Beau Smith, Voom Nutrition near Jervaulx Abbey

Leaving the Lion Inn, initially head north, before skirting around upper Rosedale and then dropping south to Rosedale Abbey.
Now it’s time to head to Cropton Forest, heading to more forest trails at Broxa. Tracks now lead over the North Yorks Moors Railway and scenes of steam trains. Once over the railway, the epic landscape of the Hole of Horcum awaits, before entering Dalby Forest, where the visitor centre has a great cafe stop and bike shop.
The Moors and Coast route now helps to guide us, through meadowland and trees that rise and fall, before picking up the easy former railway line at Scalby on the edge of Scarborough, where it provides a cinder track gives easy riding all the way north, to Robin Hoods Bay and the sea!

Riding through the Lakes with Voom Nutrition

The great benefit of this route is that you can step off the train at Ravenglass and start riding. This tiny coastal hamlet is superb, easily accessible by rail and leads you directly into the hills of the Lake District. With Muncaster Castle here too, there’s options for accommodation at the start, and as you ride through Eskdale, there’s the famous Ravenglass miniture railway.

The legendary track of Walna Scar awaits you, as you descend into Coniston and the lake, before Grizedale Forest gives a new style of riding to the route. There’s a few bike hike sections, due to the steep sided valleys and bridleways, but overall,this first section of our U.K. gravel bike coast to coast route has some awesome gravel bike riding sections on dusty trails, with epic views. Get ready to ride Lake District gravel.

Ravenglass is a small coastal hamlet, but there’s still ample places to stay, with an Inn and Muncaster Castle on hand. At Sedbergh, once again there’s ample choice, from bunkhouse to good quality Inn’s.

Character

This section has steep climbs, a bike hike and epic descents along the way, as well as a few useful tarmac sections that avoid poor trails for the gravel bike and which will help you speed along to better trails. Leaving Ravenglass, you’re immediately onto the Esk Trail gravel track and heading to the hills. It’s a varied route, with gravel, forest tracks and some technical riding sections such as Walna Scar Road. The trails become easier and less technical as you approach the Dales.

Route

Heading from the sand and sea at tiny but very quaint Ravenglass, cycle along the road, lined by beautiful small cottages, and onto the main roads. Then, climb towards Muncaster Castle, passing the car park for the castle (on the left), before taking the Esk Trail bridleway at the top of the hill, and cycling along the wide gravel path all the way into Easkdale and the Lake District National Park.
The Esk Trail finally exits onto the road by a Dutch barn and cottages just prior to Forge Bridge. Turn left onto the road and cycle the short distance on tarmac to Forge Bridge, then taking the bridleway to the right of the bridge. Cycle along this bridleway into the valley, as it follows the river. There’s an opportunity at Dalesgarth to cross over and have tea and cake at the famous Dalesgarth Station on the Ravenglass Railway.
Continuing on the bridleway, until a sign is reached for a bridleway junction for Stanley Ghyll Waterfall. Head along this, and follow the bridleway that eventually exits you onto the road at Austhwaite Brow. Stay on this road and follow it around to Seathwaite and start of the Walna Scar Road.
When you reach a junction on the left which is signed to Coniston (unsuitable for motor vehicles). Take this narrow lane, which eventually joins the famed and rocky Walna Sca Road (Bridleway Open to All Traffic), which drops on technical terrain towards Coniston.
Rest at Coniston, before leaving the village on the cycle track that runs parallel to the road towards Grizedale Forest. Exit the cycle path and cross onto the lane on the far side of Lake Coniston, signed to ‘Brantwood’, before joining the bridleway after 1/3 km that climbs into Grizedale Forest.

After a jaunt through the forest on excellent tracks, descend from near Moor Top on the bridleway that takes you to Hawkshead. Time now for tea and cake, before heading over the bridleways that take you to the dge of Lake Windermere, then riding along the lake to the ferry.
Once over the ferry, climb away from Windermere on the A5074 andafter Barker Knott Farm, take the track on the left (green Lane) eastwards.
Skirt around Gilpin Lake House and on the tracks around Thorneyfield, before joining the bridleway passing Crook Hall Farm.
At Underbarrow follow the quiet lane into Kendal for a break. Then, take the B6254 Old Hutton road out of Kendal towards Oxenholme. After Oxenholme, turn off left on the quiet lane to Millholme.
Now take quiet lanes that eventually lead to the bridleway at Aikrigg, then crossing the river and taking the tracks that lead to Sedbergh.

Gravel Bike Coast to Coast: Yorkshire Dales

Riding through the Dales with Voom Nutrition

Having reached Kendal, the Lake District is behind you and it’s time to ride towards the Howgills and the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It’s home territory for us, and it has some of the very best tracks anywhere in the United Kingdom. Gravel bike trails are all around you in the Dales, with great gravel routes for riders of all levels. First of all though, we need to get into the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the road begins with a climb out of Kendal, as we head to Sedbergh, tucked neatly beneath the Howgills Hills.

The first town on route in this stage is Sedbergh, which has several opportunities for accommodation and food. After this, we cross Dentdale and the small village/ town of Dent, before a long haul to Wensledale, where nearby Hawes, one of the largest Dales towns, has everything required. If you take this detour, Hawes has a great Youth Hostel to stay at. After this, it’s down to catching refreshments at smaller places such as Bainbridge village, before you finally reach historic Middleham.

Character

This section has steep climbs and epic descents along the way, as well as useful tarmac sections that avoid poor trails for the gravel bike and which will help you speed along to better trails. Leaving Jervaulx Abbey and the superb gravel route through the parkland, most of the route towards Hambleton and Herriot country, is on tarmac, due to the often poor quality of trails and bridleways in this short area.

Route

Head out of Kendal on the B6251, before turning off left on the minor road towards Millholme. The road climbs and crosses the M6 motorway, before dropping towards Killington.
Before reaching Killington, drop down onto a track, from Old School Road, which rides around the farmstead at Beckside (OS maps) before rejoining the minor lanes.
At Hallbeck take the tracks that crosses over the river, the.n turning right onto the main tarmac road for a very short distance, before turning off left onto minor lanes and bridleways that lead to the town of Sedbergh.
Taking the A684 road as you leave Sedbergh, cross over the bridge and then turn off right to minor lanes and ride to the hamlet of Hollins (OS Map). Take the Bridleway signed ‘Dales Highway’ that leads across the fells all the way to Ribblehead and the iconic railway viaduct.
Turn left onto the B6255 road for a short distance, then turning off onto the bridleway signed ‘Dales Way’ which climbs and heads towards Cam Houses (OS map). The track tops out on the Cam High Road, crossing the tarmac road for a short distance, before the Cam Road bridleway is rejoined and you descend all the way to Bainbridge village.
Leave Bainbridge on the A684 road towards Leyburn and cross the bridge, climbing for a short distance until a junction right is signed onto a minor road to Semer Water and Carpley Green. Once on this minor lane, turn off again onto a narrow lane that climbs to the farming hamlet at Carpley Green.

Beau Smith, Voom Nutrition at Carpley Green above Wensleydale

At Carpley Green take the gravel bridleway that climbs on twisting double tracks, the the bridleway junctions at ‘Stake Allotments’. At Stake Allotments, drop down on the fast gravel tracks to Thoralby, where minor lanes are joined. Ride on tarmac now to West Burton village (good pub).
As you begin to leave West Burton on the B6160 road, a small packhorse bridge on the right should be crossed, leading to a rising bridleway – bikehike – which eventually levels out and takes you on excellent gravel to the road. Turn right and climb towards Pen Hill and the area above the famed Middleham Gallops.
Turn off left before the top of the climb and follow the minor lane that sweeps along the top of Capplebank Plantation, then joining a road junction. Opposite the junction a bridleway sign leads you over the famed gallops and all the way down to Middleham and its castle.
Quiet country roads now lead you towards East Witton, then on towards Jervaulx Abbey, where a bridleway takes you through the parkland on excellent gravel. On leaving the parkland, turn left onto tarmac lanes once more.
After approximately 1/2 km a bridleway on the right by farm buildings should be taken. This crosses meadows and farmland, passing by trees, before rejoining tarmac on the road towards Masham. Follow this for approximately 1 km, until Mirfield Wetlands on the left. A bridleway can be accessed here, which runs adjacent to the road. After crossing a track, a further bridleway then leads you to the Brewery Visitor Centre – yes, and White Bear public house at Masham.
Leave Masham refreshed, taking the A6155 towards Ripon, but after crossing the bridge, take the minor road immediately left. Follow this for approximately 2km until a bridleway on the right at Halfpenny House Lane (track) leads you towards Thornton Watlass. Exit this on the road, then turn right and follow the gpx directions and lanes to Snape.
The route now takes predominantly tarmac lanes all the way to Northallerton. Bridleways in this area can be unpredictable and poor, and so the quiet lanes at the end of this stage are a welcome relief, and are filled with wonderful country scenes and historic buildings, such as Snape Castle.

Coast to Coast cycle routes are more popular than ever, with those looking for a C2C cycling route challenge. Our own mountain bike coast to coast route is one of the most popular online, which is why, with the continual rise in gravel bike rides that we believed it was time to develop the best Gravel Bike Coast to Coast route in the U.K.. Welcome then to our new Gravel Bike C2C – from Ravenglass in Cumbria, home of the famous Ravenglass Railway, across 3 National Parks, all the way to Robin Hoods Bay on the North Yorkshire coast.

Piecing together a Gravel Bike Coast to Coast route isn’t easy. We wanted it to have adventure, to be rideable in most conditions, and to bring some mixed riding into play and to explore the history and the landscape of the 3 national parks. This, for us, is what real gravel bike riding is all about: being able to ride on both road and tarmac and to link up the very best gravel trails around. Initially developing the route with Callum Robinson and Beau Smith from leading nutrition brand, Voom, we’ve been busy and have finalised the route and creating awesome images and video of the route, so that as your own time for adventure comes along, you’ll be able to ride what we consider to be probably one of the very best Gravel Bike Coast to Coast routes in the U.K. if not wider afield.

In particular, Beau developed the finish stretch along the Yorkshire Coast, with some spectacular views. As the route develops further, and we look to continue to develop the gravel bike C2C, and make any necessary changes, to keep it as awesome as you deserve such a great gravel ride to be. After all, with three national parks to ride through, we want to continue to provide you with probably one of the world’s best gravel biking routes.

Places Along the Way

From inspiring Eskdale in the west, through to the historic Roman Cam Road in the Dales and Wensleydale and the magnificent beauty of Jervaulx Abbey,onto Rosedale in the North Yorks Moors, this route has something for everyone. With stops designed at places such as Coniston, Windermere, Kendal, Sedbergh, Hawes, Northallerton and Rosedale, there’s also ample opportunity for accommodation and support, as you ride your gravel bike across the most beautiful parts of England. Yes, any coast to coast cycling route should have the very best trails and views, and this new Gravel Bike C2C has everything, so that you can take the ride of your life – from coast to coast!

Whilst the Gravel Bike Coast to Coast route starts and finishes at the same places as our renowned mountain bike coast to coast, the route itself varies, to ensure that it sticks as much as possible to the best rocky gravel trails. And, because of the nature of the tracks linking the Dales to the Moors, we’ve used quiet roads where appropriate, avoiding unnecessary overly muddy tracks, speeding you onwards to the best gravel trails for your journey to Robin Hoods Bay.

Gravel Bike C2C Lake District Section

Starting off at the coastal hamlet of Ravenglass, this route can be accessed by rail, and once completed, a train also taken homewards. As such, it makes the route all the easier to organise. Eskdale opens the way to the Lake District, with a bike hike up to Walna Scar road, before forest riding in Grizedale leads to the lakeside at Windermere.

Once over this magnificent lake, it’s quiet lanes and meadows that open up, as you take the trails towards the Dales and Sedbergh, nestled in the Howgills. Click here to see the full details of this first stage of our U.K. Gravel Bike Coast to Coast route.

Gravel Bike C2C Yorkshire Dales Section

This section of the gravel bike coast to route route takes on some awesome gravel bike trails, as you cross this wild part of northern England. There’s history all around you, as you pass under the famed Ribblehead Viaduct, and then visit Middleham Castle and Jervaulx Abbey.

Sutton Bank and Boltby Scar

Stats:

26.5 km and 323 metres of ascent

This route starts and finishes at the National Parks Visitor Centre at Sutton Bank. It has good safe car parking, a cafe and toilets.

Please do not park along the verges nearby. Pay for parking and keep the lanes clear and verges undamaged.

Character

The route takes you along the escarpment overlooking the Vale of York, and weaves among the new trails created to merge in with the bridleways. There are numerous other options that you pass, but this is a route that we believe you’ll love. This is a technical line, with twists and turns over rocks. Afterwards, it’ll def be time now for tea and cake.

Start Point: National Parks Visitor Centre, Sutton Bank

Route

1. From the car park head to the lane towards Cold Kirby but take the bike trail signed into the woods and follow the man made trail, which eventually spits you out on the road near to the gallops.

2. As you approach Dialstone Farm turn left onto the bridleway that skirts the edge of fields before turning onto the Cleveland Way.Having turned right, follow the singletrack as it skirts along the edge, with rolling and twisting fun, passing an old farm on the right, before dropping across the meadow and crossing the road of Bolty Scar.

3. Follow the track into the trees and continue until gates lead you to a narrow road to High Paradise farm. Pass the farmstead and rejoin the Cleveland way path.

4. At the wide bridleway you will see a moorland opposite with another bridleway, which cuts across the heather with a good singletrack route towards Arden Hall. As you join the wide doubletrack bridleway, turn left and climb back up towards the Cleveland way.

5. Turn left at the Cleveland Way track, before turning off right at a gate a short time later, and drop on a singletrack path through the rough meadow, towards trees in Boltby Forest. At the BW junction, turn right and climb back up to the Cleveland Way. Turn right onto the track and cycle along to Sneck Yate.

6. Cross over the road at Sneck Yate and follow the long straight road towards Sutton Bank for 1 mile until a bridleway right should be taken. This leads you back to the main escarpment and the Cleveland Way once more. Turn left and enjoy excellent singletrack on the blue route, with sublime views all the way back to the visitor centre – then have another play on the first loop

Wensleydale TrailFest

A classic route in Wensleydale,with epic descents

The Cam High Road is an epic bridleway in Wensleydale; that famous valley in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Climbing from just above the village of Bainbridge, it meets Fleet Moss – that famous road climb.

However, we take a detour before the summit, along a bridleway that rises above 2 valleys, before an epic descent to Semer Water. Skirting the lake, the route then climbs to another summit above Wharfdale, before delivering you at speed, back down to Bainbridge. The hills are hard, but the rewards will stay with you, on this truly epic mountain bike route in the Yorkshire Dales.

Nearby Hawes has everything for you, at all price points too. In season, there’s a great little cafe in Bainbridge too.

Character

Hard climbs and fast and twisting descents, make this a route for those with good fitness, as core strength will also make the ride even more enjoybale. The track is rideable all year, being stoney and rocky, meaning handling skills at speed are a requirement.

Route

1. From Bainbridge, follow the road towards Countersett, climbing steeply almost immediately.

2. At 1 km you join the bridleway signed ‘Beggermans Road’ – the infamous Cam High Road. Climb this, passing over the tarmac road at 3.3. km and continuing upwards.

3. At 5.6 km turn off on the left through the wide gate,onto a rough trail in grassland, that quickly leads toa smooth trail along the grassy ridge.

4. At 7.5 km the trail descends on a rocky and twisting singletrack trail, where care is needed, eventually joining the tarmac road to Semer Water.

5. Take the narrow bridge to Semer Water, then climbing the road towards ‘Stalling Busk’. At 11.4 km the bridleway heads off to your left and climbs all the way to Stake Allotments and the Stake Road bridleway at 15 km.

6. Turn left the bridleway junction,signed for ‘Carpley Green’ and enjoy a long feast of wide and rocky trail fun, interspersed with a few gates that halt progress, but give opportunity to take it all in. This awesome descent finally spits you out at the farmstead of Carperby Green, where you simply follow the tarmac road as it steeply drops all the way back to Bainbridge.

Rievaulx Woods

The cafe at the Rievaulx Abbey entrance is superb. It also has toilets. Nearby Scawton has a good pub, The Hare Inn. There’s a great choice of accommodation in the area, particularly in nearby Helmsley, where they also have a Youth Hostel.

Character

Numerous bridleways and tracks cut across this valley. The route here is a good introduction, and a great little evening or afternoon ride. A few steep climbs and a terrific short singletrack descent, good woodland trails, and great little swooping descent across open meadows. Oh, and the views are spectacular. Save it as a last ride of the weekend before heading home. You’ll definitely want to return.

Start Point: Choose either the English Heritage car park, or a small car park behind the Methodist Chapel in the village

Route

1. From the Methodist Chapel take the track (Arden Lane) which initially rises, before a forked junction of tracks, taking the left hand track which descends to Bow Bridge.

2. Cross over the bridge and take the steep track which rises alongside Lambert Hag Wood. At the next junction keep right and head towards Tylas Farm. This track rolls gently before a steep descent, followed by a climb to a junction of BWs just before the farm. Take the bridleway through the gate straight ahead and climb up to Birk Bank woods.

3. The woodland track rises and falls, before crossing a meadow and leading out onto a lane near Caydale Mill. Turn left and climb steeply, turning right at the top along High Leir Lane.

4. After approx a mile, take the bridleway to the right, which skirts around the field before dropping steeply on singletrack over rocks. Cross the wooden bridge at the valley bottom and climb up to Murton Grange, ignoring the BW passed by to the right. At the road junction, turn right and head along a short distance before exiting to the right into Cliff Wood.

5. An excellent forest track rolls along, before reaching a gated meadow. Cross the meadow until a junction of BWs by a derelict barn to your right. Take the right hand BW across the meadow, which eventually descends at speed back to Tylas Farm. Follow the route back to Rievaulx and a drink.

Pop into the National Park Centre for a coffee. On route, detour into Osmotherley, of if you choose the right time of the year and day, have a cream tea in Kepwick village. Nearby Helmsley or Thirsk are both great. You can also start this route at Sutton Bank, then joining the trail at Sneck Yate.

Character

This route follows the edge of the Hambleton Hills, along the ancient highway that links Sutton Bank with the picturesque village of Osmotherley. It rolls along with excellent views, before sweeping down steeply to ‘Square Corner’, followed by a fantastic descent through woodland – then a climb back to the ridge and home.
Park at Sneck Yate car park at the top of Boltby Bank, about 6 miles from Thirsk.

Route

1. We’ve started this route at Sneck Yate Bank car park rather than at Sutton Bank visitor centre. This way it makes the route a better all around ride for members of the family, and also leaves out some mundane elements.
From the car park, take the Cleveland Way as it follows a hard packed double track along the edge of fine moorland towards Osmotherley. This is shown as the ‘Hambleton Street’, passing along the dge of the Hambleton Hills.

2. Pass the track junction to High Paradise on your left, continuing straight on, with a gently rising and falling ride along good tracks. A gate is reached which leads into a wooded area, which provides some protection against winds (when they blow across the Moors), before again leaving the trees and cycling with moorland views.

3. The track along here is excellent at all times of the year, gently falling now as you pass by the track on the left (gated – Rag Robin Turn), before a more rocky and technical descent drops at speed towards the Forest of Silton and Square Corner.

4. As the track levels out at the junction of ‘Red Way’ to the left (signed through Forest), take the track to the left and enjoy a superb fast descent through Silton Woods.

5. Keep straight ahead as the track passes junctions left and right, and Red Way becomes Moor Lane. The woods are exited, and you can spot a car park in the trees to the right (useful for future trips), but stay on the now tarmaced road all the way to the T-junction at Kirk Ings Lane – turn left towards Kepwick.

6. After 1/3 of a mile another T-junction is reached – turn left again onto Lead lane, continuing on and passing the cul-de-sac junction of Thwaites lane to your left, as you enjoy some superb country lanes towards Kepwick. Stay on this road (Bridge Beck Lane, descending at speed as it twists and turns all the way to Kepwick.

7. After stopping and refreshing yourself – the village often has a cream tea or two advertised in the summer – head left and through the village westwards and back up to the Hambleton Hills along Rag Robin Turn. This is a steep and testing climb, but the track is excellent, being well drained sand and rock.

8. At the gate turn right and back onto Hambleton Street (the Cleveland Way), and follow your tracks all the way back to Sneck Yate, again enjoying the fine moorland track and short forested section.
The finale swoops down to the car park allowing you time to take in what is a fantastic introduction to what the area has to offer.

Nidderdale Loop

Nidderdale Loop

The Nidderdale Loop is a truly epic route in the actual Yorkshire Dales. Whilst Nidderdale opted to not be a part of the official national par, it instead became what’s known officially as an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – and it definitely is.

Living close to the route, Robert rides it often, and feels lucky to have it on his home rides list. If you travel to the Yorkshire Dales, then this route should always be on your ride list.

Pateley Bridge is the spot for accommodation and food. However, the Sportsman’s Arms at Wath is excellent for a pint and more upmarket accommodation if it takes your fancy. There is a superb small camp site in the valley, near Lofthouse. It has the best showers and facilities of any campsite in the area.

Character

This ride is an excellent trip out, with some hard climbs matched by superb descents. The climb to Middlesmoor will test all riders, and you may want to stop to enjoy the view at the top – it is fantastic. Before you set off, pick up a steak pie at Kendal’s in Pateley, and finish off in the Sportsman’s Arms at Wath.

Route

1. Ride across the bridge and at the lane end head straight on up the bridleway. Eventually the top is reached near to a deserted farm where you enjoy a rapid descent which is only halted by a couple of gates.

2. The track flows alongside the reservoir, becoming technical, with some rock steps to negotiate before evening out. Follow the bridleway as it leads around to Bouthwaite.

3. As the lane joins the main road, turn left towards the village (Ramsgill). On entering the village turn right and go through the farmyard signed for a bridleway towards Lofthouse. This track flows and winds across meadows and along stone walled lanes, dropping on cobbles and eventually meeting the road to How Stean.

4. Take the narrow road to a tea stop at the gorge cafe. From here, retreat along the road towards Lofthouse, however turning left at the junction and steeply uphill to Middlesmoor.

5. At Middlesmoor take the walled track which rises towards Scar House Reservoir. The descent that follows to the car park at Scar House is superb – fast and dicey!
6. Go over the dam, turn right up the incline, joining the track that skirts the edge of the valley, following this around the edge of Nidderdale.

7. At the road, head straight across, joining the track to a junction, keeping right, before a descent goes steeply down technical rocks to Bouthwaite.

8. At the tarmac lane, go through the gate and turn left. Head along the side of the reservoir, to the starting point at Wath and have a well-earned rest.
