Finding my cycling soul

Travelling is a part of the cycling culture – ultimately, it’s what our bike was designed for. That simple journey from A to B, to which we add our own personality. We’re all unique – like bikes.

Yes, we may look the same: two legs, two wheels, arms, handlebars, a saddle and… well, you get the picture. However, it’s what we don’t see that matters – on the inside, of us and on the bike.
I started my competitive sporting life as a snowboarder, not a cyclist. An horrific accident and serious injury put paid to that, though; which is I why I then took up triathlon, competing at age-group world-level successfully, before cycling took a hold of me and opened up that spirit of exploration that is a part of who I am. I love using my bike to challenge myself, yes; but, also to explore the world in which we live and to feel the warm breeze on my face and the excitement that pumps through my veins.

I guess that I’m like my TIME Scylon: I look one way, but when you turn the pedal, a whole new personality emerges, and it’s more fun-loving than you imagined, with a strength and toughness that defies the image – and yes, fast, because ultimately, I’m still an athlete who loves performance. If I’d had a bike made for me, it would have been the Scylon. It’s become a part of me now; part of my cycling soul, and we’re off to explore Alicante together.

Riding Alicante: Heat, Mountains, and Desert Roads

Alicante in Spain is renowned the world over, as a holiday hotspot. However, are you aware how great the road cycling is in this majestic Spanish resort? Probably not, as too often, the focus of cyclists when travelling to Spain is the Islands, or Girona. However, Alicante has everything to offer, including roads that are less filled with other riders, a quieter feeling and sublime views. It’s nestled amongst coastal mountains, with exceptional roads; which is why I took myself on a cycling trip there, recently.

Yes, Alicante is full of surprises. Everyone knows the beaches, of course. Few people, however, expect the wild, open mountains that lie just a short ride inland. Here, away from the coastal crowds, the land feels more like Texas or the rising hills of Africa than Spain — dry terraces, rocky peaks, and a sky that seems endless. As an easily excited cycling tourist, and with my Scylon accompanying me, I set out to test it and to explore the climbs of Tiger Pass, Puerto de Tudons, Puerto del Collao, and Puerto de Benifallim. It turned into one of the most beautiful and most unforgettable rides I’ve ever done. One of those rides that remain unexpected and treasured, at the forefront of our memories for a long time. That causes the blood to flow faster and our bodies to feel lighter, as our eyes open up to the landscape and our heart feeds on the emotions.

I’m unashamedly a spiritual and emotion athlete. Away from cycling, I’m a designer and also a painter, using color to carry forward the images I create. So yes, when I’m cycling, I totally immerse myself in the landscape. For now, though, it’s time to ride, as me and my bike head off into the Alicante mountains, exploring this beautiful corner of mainland Spain. Yes, it’s time to ride!

Character

A long but rewarding route, with climbs and mountain views views, and the sun high in the sky. Road surface conditions are superb.

The route combines inland climbs, fast descents, scenic towns, anddeserted roads, too. The sun beats down at time, so wear sun screen and take on board lots of fluids. Whether you’re chasing fitness, a photo-worthy adventure, or pure road cycling pleasure, this ride offers it all.

Route

Puerto de Tudons (1,025 m)

My day started from Alcoy heading towards the Puerto de Tudons. Around 8 km with a 4% average and at a 7-9% maximum steepness – steady, but brutal in the heat. My bottles turn warm within minutes, and every patch of shade feels like a gift. The bike is looking after things though – light and responsive, pushing me to hold a rhythm even when the heat tried to break me. Once I settled into the heat and the climb, it becomes a route to smile on; with the challenge being a positive one, as the Scylon eats up the distance, keeping me comfortable and focused. I have fluids and nutrition and views, and I have a purpose, as the sun beats down on me. I’m renewing my cycling soul, away from the crowds, and the freedom that rushes through my body as the gentle breeze touches my face, reminds me why we ride!

Tiger Pass – Safari Aitana

After this, I it was time to take on Tiger Pass, near Safari Aitana. The landscape here was raw, exposed and bare, with scrubland stretching out like a cycling safari. The roads are well-laid though, as they continually twist upwards under a blazing sun; the kind that makes the tarmac shimmer like a mirage. It felt wild, different, and slightly surreal — not Europe as most people imagine it. Yes, I had taken on enough fluids, and I was not hallucinating! It was a route that needed focus, and set myself – rider and Scylon as one, as the cranks turned and the views opened up. Before too long, it was done, and it was time for another Alicante cycling challenge.

Puerto del Collao (890 m)

This climb was shorter but nastier. The Collao throws itself upwards in ramps of 13–16%, hitting you straight in the face, like walls. The road looks at you and challenges you, as it rises in threatening, jagged steps, but thankfully with some downhill sections on which to relax.

Ultimately though, as I mentioned earlier – I’m an athlete at heart, and have competed across the world. The road and I challenge each other, as I turn the cranks and remain focused and positive – this is my choice and want to see the summit views.

From the summit, the landscape opens wide and I was rewarded, finally. Beneath me were terraced valleys with olive trees and jagged limestone ridges, stretching far into the haze. It all looked magical and timeless – like a movie with a Spanish guitar playing softly and lyrically in the background – and no, once again I am not hallucinating! I’m immersing myself in the cycling experience, as I explore Spain and explore myself and my cycling limits. Spanish. Views and feelings like this, need to be taken slowly and allowed to wash over you; and, after all, I have TIME on my side!

Puerto de Benifallim (1,020 m)

The final challenge for me was Puerto de Benifallim. It’s a short, steadier climb that winds through a pine forest before breaking into rocky open ground above 1,000 m. The altitude brought a whisper of cooler air, but the sun still pressed hard, testing me physically and mentally.

Surviving the Heat

At 40°C, the fountains in the village squares became my salvation. The brutality of the climb was done for a while, and I didn’t just fill my bottles — I soaked myself completely. Yes, jersey, shorts, head, everything.

It was the only way to keep going! Having competed in triathlon all over the world, I know how heat can affect athletes, and this was something that only a fully dipped and watered head can solve! Each time I left a fountain dripping, the cool water evaporating instantly in the dry air, and it felt like a reset button for the next climb – the next challenge.

Descents Like a Bullet

The reward for every ascent, however, were the epic descents to look forward to. The Scylon is designed to be responsive and light, and it came into its own on the descending. I was able to relax and aim the bike, as I moved by tired body around the bike, in harmony with the curving road. Long, sweeping, and fast, cutting turns through a barren landscape, with nothing but the wind in my ears and on my face. The wheels hummed steadily, and the bike felt like a bullet, holding the line and giving me that much-needed confidence in the corners, as the road twisted and turned like a ribbon, loosely strewn across the mountains.

Epic rides of exploration

What makes Alicante special is the contrast. In one ride, you pass through desert scrub, thick pine forests, rocky ridgelines, and timeless stone villages. It feels like riding through an old Western movie set — only, with your bike as the horse, carrying you across the landscape. No, it’s not the Alps nor the Pyrenees. It’s harsher, hotter, and maybe even more rewarding, emotionally.

Alicante is a place where survival, speed, and scenery collide, and it leaves you with memories that burn long after the ride is done. For me, it was special and it tested me and the bike. Yes, Alicante is a place for TIME travellers! It’s a place that should be on every cyclist’s bucket list, as you explore the variety and exceptional terrain that Spain has to offer for cycling. Too often, people head for the obvious Spanish locations, when you can pause time and find one the best places for cycling in Spain, away from the crowds.

I love my bike – it’s like me. TIME like to be different; to show their uniqueness. They look for excellence in everything – like me. Ultimately, we like to explore our limits – because the resultant feeling is unequalled, and it reminds us of one very important thing – that we’re alive!

Exploring Albacete: Spain’s Quiet Cycling Paradise

Taking Time to Ride New Places

When people talk about cycling in Spain, the same names always come up: Girona, the Pyrenees, maybe the Sierra Nevada. They’re classics for a reason, and popular paces for cyclists the world over. I’ve ridden in each of these amazing places, and felt the warm sun beating down on me, with a cool breeze refreshing my face as I’ve descended the epic climbs that seem to lie in every mountain valley.

However, this summer I found myself pedalling in a place far less famous – and it completely won me over. Albacete, tucked away in Castilla-La Mancha, is an underrated cycling gem that offers stunning scenery, peaceful roads, and a real sense of adventure. It’s a place that quietly exists, seemingly knowing that once you’ve discovered it, you’ll always want to come back for more – and I do.

Cycling Off the Beaten Path

I was there in August, during the peak season, when most tourist hotspots in Spain and elsewhere are overflowing with traffic and long café lines. Not so here. The roads around the small mountain villages were blissfully quiet, the travel affordable, and the hospitality was refreshingly authentic. Instead of queues and crowds, there were olive groves, fig trees hanging heavy with fruit, wild blackberries by the roadside, and even truffles hiding beneath the soil. If I hadn’t been cycling, I would have been foraging and collecting some of this bountiful food and fruit. Yes, it felt like pedalling through a Mediterranean garden with a special pass for the most beautiful areas. My senses felt alive both on and off the bike and I felt alive and ready to explore.

The only downside – and it really was a first-world problem? Finding a decent cappuccino. I learned the hard way that oat or almond milk is much easier to track down than a proper cappuccino with “avena” milk – after a week, I almost quit coffee entirely. Almost… but obviously, not quite!

Rides That Stood Out

One of the most memorable cycling routes took me from Molinicos, climbing up through Puerto de las Crucetillas and over to Peralejo. These are not monster alpine passes, but instead are rolling, gentle climbs through quiet forests, with sweeping views that appear out of nowhere. They lie like ribbons across the Spanish landscape, and the gradients are kind, the tarmac is smooth, and you achieve that wonderfully calm and tranquil feeling of total solitude on the bike – just you, the road, and the whisper of wind through the pines.

Cycle tourism these days is big business, and too many places become filled with too many cyclists, losing that reason why we all headed there in the first place. But here in the gentle, rolling hills of Albacete, I was able to lose myself and to find time to ride and time to rejuvenate my soul.

Another highlight for me, was looping around Embalse de la Fuensanta, a reservoir surrounded by dramatic limestone mountains that stood sentinel and which radiated the sun with the light rock. The turquoise water of the reservoir looked so inviting that we ditched the bikes for a swim – easily one of the most memorable mid-rides stops I’ve ever had.

Seeking Adventure

Not every adventure went perfectly to plan. At one point, convinced we’d found a clever shortcut, we ended up lost. Trust me, this isn’t a regular thing for me – my navigation is usually spot on! However, whilst riding along our not-so-shortcut, after 30 minutes it was clear this was not rideable gravel, and three hours later – sunburnt, dusty, and pushing bikes uphill in 40°C – we admitted defeat! Lesson learned: the long way round is the better option. (You can see the comedy of errors on my Strava route if you’re curious!) I promise you, I won’t send you on the shortcut, if you want to repeat the ride, error free! Although, it may provide you with a real sense of adventure!

Why You Should Go

Albacete might not yet be on the cycling world’s radar, but that’s exactly what makes it special. The landscapes are raw and beautiful, the climbs are friendly but rewarding, and the roads are blissfully free from traffic. Add in warm, welcoming locals and a slower pace of life, and you’ve got the perfect destination for cyclists who want more than just ticking off famous passes.

One aspect of cycling that always appeals to me, is to be able to relax and find myself again. To set myself free as I climb the passes and to feel the wind in my face as I explore the descents and watch the amazing landscapes fly by me at speed – or at a slower pace, where I can press pause and take it all in. Taking time to pause is always good – and riding my Time Scylon in these hills, was just perfect, as the bike and I became one.

If you’re looking for a quieter, more authentic cycling trip in Spain – one where you can ride all day, swim in a reservoir, eat figs straight from the tree, and never once get stuck in a café queue – then put Albacete on your map. Just maybe bring your own coffee beans!

Stelvio Pass off-piste and off-road

An epic Italian mountain adventure

We all know the Stelvio Pass, of course we do! However, did you know that there are a series of tracks and unpaved roads that lead to and from this legendary Italian summit, on the border with Switzerland. Yes, once you set off from Bormio, along the aptly named ‘Via Stelvio’, you are set for an epic adventure.

After 3.2 km, the road continues upwards, yes. However, off to the left is a track that leads into the lower trees and mountain tracks. You can either take this as a gravel bike ascent of the Stelvio, or descend it on your gravel bike after climbing the main pass. As an extreme alternative, get dropped off at the summit and ride down this old mountain pass, off-road on a mountaon bike adventure into Bormio! The choice is yours, and we have gpx files for either option. Alex and Teo did a climb of the main pass road recently, alongside the awesome mountain bike descent, whilst travelling through Switzerland and Italy.

Anyway, we’ve mapped out the route for you to share in their adventure – so, off you go!

Route Information

Stats: 46 km 2,000 metres

Refreshments & Where to Stay: Bormio is a well practised place for cycling tourists to stay, and has everything. At the top of the pass, you’ll find places to eat, drink and rest before descending.

Rifugio Ristoro Solena also provides a great option for meals and maybe a stay, as you descend towards the Lago de Cancano in the valley.

Character: Tough and steep, with a technical descent. Do not tackle if your actual fitness and skill level is not up to this. However, if you’re ready for the adventure, it is an epic ride!

Route

The Stelvio Pass is a route that needs no introduction. However. are you aware that old mountain tracks and military roads lead you off-piste and off-road from and to this epic cycling challenge and summit. Yes, from just a few km outside of Bormio, the road is joined by tracks and unpaved roads that can either take you on an epic gravel or mtb ascent, or conversely, an epic gravel bike descent from the Stelvio summit.

From Bormio, follow the masses and take the road to the Stelvio Pass, as it climbs majestically. At the 3.2 km point, if you’re looking to climb the gravel bike ascent, then head off to the left on the signed tracks.
Several signs are on a post here, including a red square with a white painted bike and rider. Descend this and now follow your gpx file carefully.
Alternatively, if you’re ascending the road, just stay on the road and climb… and climb! after 24 km off-road and 18 km on-road, you’ll reach the summit!

Descent route off-road

If you are taking the gravel or mountain bike descent, then the tracks begin just behind the hotel and restaurant Genziana at the summit. Take your time on the inital stages, and take in the epic history of these trails.
The Umbria Pass is crossed by the track on your way down/ up, and once crossed, the tricky descent heads down with awesome scenery all around you.
The higher track is a good surface, but then leads to steep and technical sections. Take care on these and ride/walk to your abilities.

Rifugio Ristoro Solena

As the gravel tracks lead down to the Lago de Cancano, you meet the Rifugio Ristoro Solena, where booking in advance or luck can provide you with a magical nights stay by this beautiful mountain lake, before heading back to the road and into Bormio.

All that’s left now is to eat and replenish your energy, and take in this amazing area of Italy, before planning your next mountain adventure!

Granfondo La Fausto Coppi 2025

A Brutal, Beautiful, Unforgettable Ride in Cuneo

This year, I had the unforgettable experience of participating in the 36th edition of Granfondo La Fausto Coppi in Cuneo, Italy — a legendary race that truly tests your limits and rewards you with breathtaking beauty, world-class organization, and the most passionate cycling atmosphere I’ve ever witnessed. I’d been invited by our friends at Vitamina C, the Italian cycle industry marketing experts. Being a fan of cycling in Italy, it was an obvious invitation to accept!

On June 30, 2025, I stood at the start line in Piazza Galimberti, surrounded by more than 2,500 cyclists from 42 countries. The event felt international from the start, with Argentina as the partner nation this year and a parade of flags bringing a festival atmosphere to the city. The yellow jersey of 2025 paid tribute to the Argentine sun, adding a symbolic touch to this already special race.

The Race: 172 km, 4,300 m Elevation — Pure Grit

All the various events distances — Granfondo, Mediofondo, and the non-competitive Fauniera Classic — launched together in a spectacular start, just after 1.5 km, the routes split. For me, I veered right toward the long-distance Granfondo, racing at average speed of 45 km/h on the flat 40 km section. It was an epic and fast start, and an indicator what was to come – a great day for cycling!

The Climbs: Brutal, Beautiful, and Unforgiving

1. Colle di Sampeyre (2,284 m) — 16 km of steady climbing

The race warmed up with the Colletta di Rossana, a small climb that led us into the Varaita Valley. After about 20 km on the flat, the real challenge began.
The Colle di Sampeyre was the first major climb — a 16 km ascent on a steady, regular gradient. It offered some shaded sections through the forest, which I was grateful for as the sun quickly gained strength. The views were spectacular, but the climb was relentless. The descent to the Maira Valley (17.7 km) that followed was fast, technical, and required full concentration.

2. Colle Fauniera (2,481 m) via Colle d’Esischie — 21.4 km of climbing

After the descent and a flat section in the valley, the real battle began with the ascent toward Colle Fauniera. This climb passed over Colle d’Esischie (21.4 km of climbing), where the Granfondo route merged again with the Mediofondo route. From there, just another 1.5 km to the summit of Colle Fauniera — a brutal, exposed, and legendary climb. The heat was merciless, and riders were plunging their heads into freezing fountains and soaking their kits to stay cool.

3. Madonna del Colletto (1,304 m) — 7.3 km, max gradient 13%

After a 25 km descent to Demonte in the Stura Valley, the final challenge awaited: the Madonna del Colletto climb. Short but vicious, this 7.3 km ascent hit gradients of up to 13%. It was a true test of what was left in my legs after hours on the saddle. With the crowd cheering and volunteers providing constant support, I dug deep to crest this final climb.

From there, the toughest parts of the Granfondo were over. The route now followed the same final stretch as the Mediofondo, descending gently back toward Cuneo and the finish line in Piazza Galimberti, picking up more riders and allowing us to finish together in the beautiful sun. The cycling had been spectacular, the mountains epic, and the fellow riders were amazing. Thankfully, my new TIME Scylon road bike had looked after me well, and we’d climbed in unison, loving this epic Italian cycling adventure, in memory of Fausto Coppi!

Despite the intense heat and gruelling elevation, I proudly finished 4th in my age group and 9th among women overall — a result I’m extremely proud of in such a prestigious and challenging event.

Heat, Humanity, and Hydration

The heat was brutal throughout the day, but the volunteers were phenomenal — constantly handing out water, pouring it over riders, and supporting us at every turn. Riding an event such as this, you need to be aware of the nature of cycling in the Italian mountains – the physical and mental challenges. The sun can be truly brutal, and you must stay hydrated. Many riders, including myself, cooled off in mountain fountains and streams, soaking our kits to survive the relentless summer sun.

Pro-Level Organization and Electric Atmosphere

The event was professionally organized from start to finish: well-marked routes, perfectly placed and fully stocked food stations, and seamless logistics. The spectators were incredible — cheering passionately, encouraging us, and sometimes even giving riders a little push up the steepest sections. It felt like riding a stage of the Giro d’Italia, and I absolutely loved it!

The evenings before, too; sharing time and food with our friends such as Arianna and Claudia from Vitamina C. Robert had told me about the event and I was excited to come – it proved to be a great decison, and I made friends that will remain so. Cycling is an opportunity to share happiness and smiles and to meet so many amazing people – the people who both organise and ride events such as the Fausto Coppi.

Cuneo: The Perfect Host City

Cuneo is a cycling paradise, located at the foot of the Alps with mountain roads just minutes away. Everything is so accessible for cyclists visiting the area, and the rides are breathtaking. The historic Piazza Galimberti served as the perfect start and finish area, surrounded by cafes, arcades, and a wealth of breathtaking views.

Cuneo’s highlights:

• Culinary treasures: Famous for chestnuts, hazelnuts, cheeses, and celebrated Piedmont wines.
Rich cycling culture: Deeply connected to Fausto Coppi’s legacy.

• Eco-conscious organization: The race featured an Eco Team to keep the routes clean, promoting sustainability throughout the event.

I’ll be back – of course!

I’ve travelled extensively this summer, with my new TIME Scylon road bike; riding races and events in Switzerland, France and Italy. Italy, however, is special for me, and the Fausto Coppi has been an event that willl ive in my memory forever.

The Granfondo La Fausto Coppi is more than a race; it’s a challenge, a festival, and a celebration of cycling in its purest form. I absolutely loved my visit and the ride into the magnificent Italian mountain roads and cycling passes! Will I be back in 2026 – of, course… won’t you!

Rising to 2,236 meters in the heart of the Italian Dolomites, Passo Giau is one of the most iconic and awe-inspiring climbs in Europe. Whether you’re tackling it from Selva di Cadore or Cortina d’Ampezzo, this pass demands both strength and respect from every cyclist. It’s an epic road cycling route that all cyclists should have on their tick list. Thankfully, it’s also easy to get here; with access via the European road network, and international flights into the north of Italy, making it an accessible cycling holiday in Italy, for everyone.

The climb from Selva di Cadore, considered the tougher side, stretches for 10 km with a relentless average gradient of over 9% — peaking at a punishing 15% in its steepest sections. With 29 hairpin bends, this ascent is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one. The type of climb that I like, fir the nature of the challenge and the rewarding feeling at the end.

From the lush forested start, the scenery transforms dramatically. As you ascend, alpine meadows and rugged limestone peaks like Monte Nuvolau and Averau frame the road, offering stunning views that justify every drop of sweat. It’s no wonder Giau is a key feature in both the Maratona dles Dolomites and the Giro d’Italia, having even served as a dramatic Cima Coppi (the race’s highest point).

Spectacular summits

At the summit, cyclists are rewarded not only with jaw-dropping panoramic views but also with a rustic café – the perfect place to enjoy a slice of apple strudel while soaking in the Dolomitic majesty. After all, you’ve earned it, with one of the most epic cycling passes in Italy! Here’s a few basic points, to help you to plan your own cycling adventure in Italy.

• Season: Best ridden between late June and early September.
• Weather: Be prepared – even in summer, the summit can be windy and cold.
• Traffic: Early morning rides offer the quietest roads and clearest skies.

Where to Stay: Hotel Col Alto, Corvara

Refreshments & Where to Stay

Adequate refreshments at the start, and a rustic cafe at the summit. There’s also a good restaurant, slightly down from the summit. Take plenty of nutritional products with you.

Character

This is an alpine cycling challenge, and it will be a continual uphill ride, with few rests. Be prepared and take adequate clothing and tools with you. Be careful on the descent, and ride within your abilities.

Route

From Selva di Cadore, head along the northwards road, Via IV Novembre (SP638) which is signed for Passo Giau.
Simply set in and follow this road to the junction at the Refugio Fedare, where the SP638 swings to the right on the continuing harpins.
Just 2 km below the summit, the ristorante Da Aurelio is reached, and you have the option to return and eat here, once summited. However, there is a very good rustic hotel at the summit.

Final Thoughts

I did the climb on my new TIME Bikes Scylon, which was magical, and helped me on those tough sections. Having the right bike and the right gearing for a cycling climb such as the Passo Giau is critical. However, if you’ve got the right bike, then a road cycling trip to the Dolomites is something that all cyclists should aspire to do. Riding these epic Italian mountain passes, with some of the most extraordinarily beautiful views in Europe – it’s a once in a lifetime experience.

If you’re properly prepared – physically and mentally, for the dual challenge; and, if you are ready to ride, then a week here is something that will stay with you forever. I stayed in the Hotel Col Alto, Corvara, which is a great base for cyclists visiting the Dolomites. It’s comfortable and has great facilities – and a great Italian menu!

Looking after my TIME Scylon was easy, too, as bike storage is also well catered for. I was able to relax and chill and to and rest between rides. Off you go, then, and book your own cycling trip to the Italian Dolomites! It’s definitely TIME to ride!

Cycling in the Costa Brava

A classic Costa Brava road loop

This is a road cycling route par excellence, for cyclists chasing unforgettable roads, panoramic views, and just the right amount of suffering. Yes, the Costa Brava delivers all of this and more, in spades. This round-trip route from Begur to Tossa de Mar and back, featuring the legendary 365 Curvas coastal road, is a signature ride in north-eastern Spain — and is arguably one of the finest day rides in Europe. Time then to take a cycle ride into the mountains of the Costa Brava!

Character

A long but rewarding route, with climbs and coastal views, and the sun high in the sky. Road surface conditions are superb.

The route combines inland climbs, fast descents, scenic towns, and an out-and-back ride along one of the most sinuous roads in Europe. Whether you’re chasing fitness, a photo-worthy adventure, or pure road cycling pleasure, this ride offers it all.

Route

Outbound: Begur to Tossa de Mar (62.5 km)
1. Begur to Palamós (20 km, 300 m gain): Warming up with rolling inland terrain, the ride weaves through pine forests and traditional Catalan villages.
2. Palamós to Sant Feliu de Guíxols (20 km, 250 m gain): Fast, flatter terrain near the coast, good roads and mild traffic.
3. Sant Feliu to Tossa de Mar (365 Curvas) (22 km, 450 m gain): The highlight segment—22 km of tight curves, no long climbs but constant rollers, with cliffs plunging into the sea and pristine Mediterranean views.

Return: Tossa de Mar to Begur (62.5 km)
The return retraces the outbound route in reverse, but the feel of the climbs and descents will change:
1. Tossa to Sant Feliu: Feels slightly more uphill on the way back, especially the first half.
2. Sant Feliu to Palamós: A chance to recover and spin out the legs on flatter roads.
3. Final Climb to Begur: A short but demanding sting in the tail as you ascend back into town—prepare for tired legs and strong sea breezes.

• Max Elevation: 220 m (Begur hilltop)

• Coastal rollers on the GI-682 (short climbs, 6–10% gradients)
• Final 3 km ascent back into Begur (5–7% average)

This route is all about accumulated elevation—there are few long, sustained climbs, but the constant undulating terrain wears you down. Pacing and nutrition are key.

Road Cycling Highlights

1. The 365 Curvas (GI-682): Over 365 tight corners on a 22 km section between Sant Feliu and Tossa. It’s scenic, technical, and incredibly fun—especially with light traffic in early mornings or off-season.
2. Tossa de Mar: The perfect midway stop. Visit the walled medieval Old Town, refill bottles, and grab a café cortado by the beach.
3. Begur’s Return Climb: A fitting end to a demanding route, with panoramic views over the Cap de Begur and the Mediterranean.

Practical Tips

1. Traffic: Light to moderate, though summer weekends can bring coastal congestion—start early.
2. Refueling Stops:
3. Palamós and Sant Feliu both offer cafés and restaurants.
4. Tossa de Mar has many options for lunch, coffee, or a beach break.
5. Best Season: Spring and autumn—pleasant temperatures, fewer tourists, and ideal road conditions.
6. Gear Tips:
a. Compact gearing (e.g. 50/34 with 11–30 or 11–32) is helpful for the rollers and final climbs.
b. Bring a camera or insta360—you’ll regret leaving it behind.

Final Thoughts

Cycling the Begur–Tossa de Mar loop via the 365 Curvas is a Costa Brava classic. It’s scenic, challenging, and never dull. From medieval towns to turquoise coves and endless switchbacks, this route is a bucket-list ride for any serious cyclist visiting Catalonia.

Col de Turini from Nice

MY FIRST COL – COL DE TURINI

I started cycling in the spring of 2019, and I immediately fell in love with it! The feeling of freedom was like nothing I had ever experienced before, and I really felt that I found the perfect complement to my Yoga practice. After about a month of bambi-like riding along the coast of the French Riviera I felt like it was time to take the bull by the horn and try one of the Maritime Alp cols. I mean, cycling is all about attacking those mountains, right? I really had no idea of what it was like to ride up a mountain, or hill for that matter, haha, or even which one to start with. Col de la Madone? Col d’Eze? Madone d’Utelle?

In the end, I decided to tackle the South side of the locally famous Col de Turini. This climb can be done from three different sides and ends at 1604m. Last years’ Tour de France passed through the shorter and steeper West side ascent then descended the South side. We took off an early Sunday morning in June, had a coffee at Café Du Cycliste by the port in Nice, then started riding through the city, up the short Col de Nice climb and into the little village of L’escarene where a short coffee stop was scheduled. The actual climb is 24km long from the village, with an average slope of 4%.

The first 6k of the climb is quite pleasant, 3-4% gradient until you reach another picturesque little village called Luceram. Here you can choose from two different (but very similar) routes that end up in an intersection approx. 10km later. The switchbacks start almost immediately as you exit the village, and it’s just a little hint of what’s coming up ahead! I still felt great at this point, enjoying the amazing views and finally feeling like a “real” cyclist attacking the mountain.

After some 5k of pleasant riding partly though a forest, you reach another intersection where a turn to the right will take you over to Col de Braus (I’ll tell you more about this amazing climb in another article) and by continuing straight you finally get to experience the real Maritime alps….5k of steep zigzagging up the mountain and halfway up this part I wasn’t smiling anymore but kept going. By the end of the zig-zag section you reach a “somewhat” flatter part of the climb, taking you into the mountain village Peira Cava.

From here it is roughly 8k to go. The climb takes you through a very nice forest until you reach the top which is an intersection where all three roads up Turini come together. You only ascend 200m from the village which makes the last part quite easy, apart from some short steep sections. It’s also common to ride into sheep-blockages at this section. When I finally saw the Turini sign, I felt victorious, proud and most of all very happy that I had beaten this climb, only a month after I bought my first road bike. I never would have imagined myself being a cyclist, and especially not one climbing big mountains!

There are three nice hotel/restaurants on the top and we fueled up with an amazing blueberry pie at the Hotel Les Trois Vallées, before descending back down to Nice. This ended up being the start of my Col-chasing. This last summer I spent 10 days climbing as many famous French Cols as I could find, but that will be the subject for another article. End of season ride with Stefan and Assault to Freedom team

Situated in the northern Italian mountain region of the Dolomiti, this epic ride takes you to several summits and is a true cycling challenge. It can however be broken down into several elements, and has lots of options for accommodation and refreshments along the way.

Stefano and the guys from Assault to Freedom completed this Italian mountains, cycling epic in one ride, as an end-of-season adventure!

Famed for the natural beauty, and a haven for adventure tourists in summer and winter, the Dolomites, or Dolomiti in Italian, is part of the Northern Italian Alps. It’s dominated by 18 majestic peaks, and its diverse landscape consists of more than 350,000 acres of jagged pinnacles, sheer rock faces, icy glaciers, deep gorges, lush forests, and verdant valleys. Within this area, there are a phenomenal 2,131 named mountains: Marmolada, which boasts Punta Penía, the highest peak of the mountain range, is nicknamed the “Queen of the Dolomites.” Because of its stunning beauty and well-preserved Mesozoic carbonate platform system that was formed 250 million years ago, the Dolomites were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009.

It’s a place that every cyclist to Italy should visit in their lifetime. This ride is an epic cycling ride through the Dolomiti mountains of Italy, from Stefano – a truly inspiring athlete and human being!

Stats 175.56 km 5, 273 metres

Refreshments & Where to Stay
This ride starts at Canazei, which is an alpine resort, sitting near the Pordoi, Sella and Fedaia passes. It is part of the Dolomiti Super ski area, which in winter, offers numerous downhill runs. A cable car ascends to the Punta Rocca panoramic terrace on Marmolada peak, making a stop at the Marmolada Great War Museum 3000M, with displays on WWI. The Sass Pordoi Mountain has views stretching as far afield as the Swiss and Austrian Alps. As a well known holiday resort, it’s a great base and you’ll find plenty of accommodation choices and places to eat. Agorda is also not too far away, and another place to base yourself.

Along the way, there are some useful places to stay over, if you plan on riding over two days. There’s the Rifugio Passo Staulanza after 92km, and also the village of Mareson-Pecol shortly afterwards, with far more options. PLaces to eat are plenty along the way, but take hydration and snacks. Be well kitted out, as well. These are mountain roads.

Character

This ride starts and finishes in the Dolomiti region of Northern Italy, traversing numerous summits along the way. Stefano and the guys from Assault to Freedom rode it in one swoop. However, for mere mortal cyclists, it can be done as a two or three day epic Italian cycling journey. Lots of climbing, so you need to ensure that your fitness is on par for this one!

Route

From the town of Canazei, ride towards the Pordoi Pass and start the climbing. The climbing reaches 8.5% at times, and the summit is reached after 13.km.
Descend for 10 km to the resort village of Arabba, then begin the climbing once more, heading this time for the Passo Falzagarego at 50 km. You can get a snack and drink here, at the Cafe Paninoteca.
Descend now to the bridge on the road SP638, crossing the Curto River, before climbing once more.
We’re now riding to the famed Berghotel at the Passo Giau, reached after 73 km, and which is a good option for the night. You now get to descend the famed 29 hairpins of the pass, in one of the most spectacular areas of the Dolomites. If you can make one more minor climb, as you take in tis epic and long descent, you can stay the night at the Dolomiti town of Dont, which has lots of options for accommodation and places to eat. With 105 km of Dolomites cycling in your legs, this is a good idea for those not wanting a one-day epic. You can also talk about the epic Giau descent over pasta and wine.
Setting off now, the alpine village of Chiesa is next on the list, surrounded by tree lined pastures and wooden houses and chalets.
Ascending the narrow and tree lined SP347 road, after some 115 km, you are given the epic view of the Civetta mountain to your left, sublime, looking down across the Dolomites.
We now descend to Agorda, one of the most renowned and beautiful places in the Dolomiti (Dolomites); from where you can see the magnificent Mount Agner and Mount Moiazza, standing sentinel of the beautiful area around Agorda. If you don’t use this as a stop and overnight halt, then it’s definitely a place to return to with your cycling friends, one day! You have 125 km cycled, in some of the most magnificent and best cycling routes in Italy and the Dolomites. You begin to feel how special this ride is; an epic cycling route from Stefano, and probably one of the best cycling routes in the whole of the Dolomites.
The roads now head upwards again, and after 142 km, you reach the beautiful Lago di Alleghi, where you can take refreshments on board at the nearby town.
All that remains is to ascend through the town of Caprile, before summitting the Passo Fedaia-Marmolada, where you can take in the fact that you’ve cycled the highest peak in the region, and a Giro D’Italia classic.
It’s now just a short descent back to the start at Canazei.

A ride into history, and the wine area of southern Germany

Heidelberg is well-known across the world for its historic centre; especially the 14th century university – the oldest in Germany. Being alongside the beautiful Neckar River in southwestern Germany, Heidelberg is a wealth of culture and history, with the venerable Heidelberg University, founded in the 14th century, the Gothic Heiliggeistkirche church, which towers over the cafe-lined Marktplatz, a town square in the Altstadt (Old Town). The red-sandstone ruins of Heidelberg Castle, a noted example of Renaissance architecture, stand sentinel over Heidelberg, on Königstuhl hill.

It’s a town to stay for a few days in, to stand on the historical stone bridge and to see the town lit up at night, as you enjoy a mini cycling break, with culture for after the gravel trails.

Refreshments & Where to Stay

Heidelberg has been welcoming visitors for centuries and has ample choices for refreshments and places to stay. The Fresko Cafe & Bar is a good place to get great coffee from, and can be found at Sofienstraße 29, 69115 Heidelberg, Germany.

Character

The tracks and trails are all reasonable for experienced riders. The Heidelberg area is famed for its history and culture, and the magnificent university. The ride heads out of the town and rolls around the forested hills on tracks and comfortable trails, and has ample opportunity to extend the ride in places, if you want a longer challenge. Ruined castles are all over this area, and it’s a history lovers paradise.

Route

This route requires you to follow the GPX file.
Cross over the bridge from the old town of Heidelberg and turn right towards the trees and parkland that winds towards the Philosophers” Way – Philosophen Weg on Google Maps.
The GPX route guides you along tracks and trails, surrounded by the trees, as you climb and fall, and pass several small monuments.
Once the initial climbing and descending is done, at the 37 km point, an 8 km steady climb takes you to a high point, after which a series of rolling climbs leads you forward, traversing the tree-lined hillsides above Heidelberg.
The final climb begins some 15 km from Heidelberg, alongside the Neckar River at the small but amazing, four-castle town of Neckarsteinach. Once this final climb is done, it’s a fast descent back into Heidelberg and refreshments.

Regensburg to Kelheim Gravel Ride

A ride into history

This reasonably short adventure gravel ride takes on the culture and history of this wine loving area of Germany and Bavaria. From the majestic history of the 12th-century stone bridge in Regensburg, you follow the river, before heading into the forests near to historic Kelheim – famed for spectacular caves and castles, before riding back to Regensburg via the river.

It’s a ride to combine with a weekend in Regensburg, taking in the history and culture of this spectacular part of Bavaria. Next to Regensburg Cathedral, the Stone Bridge is Regensburg’s most important landmark and a UNESCO site. With the start of construction in 1135, the Stone Bridge is considered a masterpiece of medieval architecture and is the oldest preserved bridge in Germany and a great place to start and finish a ride into adventure from.

Refreshments & Where to Stay

Regensburg has ample choices, such as the great burger restaurant at Adolf-Schmetzer-Straße 5. Once you get into the forests near Kelheim, a slight detour allows you to enjoy the cafe in the trees at Restaurant Frauenhäusl, which is marked on our Google map.

Character

The tracks and trails are all reasonable for experienced riders. The Regensburg area is famed for its history and culture, and wine – and this ride follows the river, before heading into the forests and exploring the trails between Regensburg and historic Kelheim, famed for caves and ruined castles

Route

This route requires you to follow the GPX file.
Follow the track from Regensburg along the south side of the Danube, then crossing the river to the hamlet of Riegling after 6.5 km.
Ride via Sinzing onto the riverside track on the north side of the Danube, to the hamlet of Gundelshausen, then turning right and riding to Kapfelburg, and climbing into the forested hills towards Wallner Kapelle at 32 km.
Descend towards Kelheim and then ride to a point where you cross over the earlier ascending track, this time climbing rolling tracks and skirting the hamlet of Saxberg, then passing the chapel at Zuylenkapelle. The track rolls you towards Alte Eich, a photo opportunity spot, before descending steeply and shortly back to the riverside paths that return you to Regensburg.
