A Weekend at La Reine Women’s Cycling Festival

When I first rolled into Gstaad, I was running on three hours of sleep, a stiff neck from a 10-hour drive, and nerves from a last-minute wheel change on my bike. Glamorous? Not exactly. But if there’s one thing women in cycling know how to do — it’s show up, no matter what.

I had driven all the way from the Dolomites, picking up my boyfriend in Milan along the way. We arrived in the Swiss Alps late at night. I was exhausted but buzzing with excitement. The event was calling. At 2 a.m., I finally closed my eyes… only to wake at 5 a.m., hoping my new wheel setup would hold up. Luckily, the amazing on-site mechanics came to my rescue and got my TIME Scylon dialed in just in time. And that’s how La Reine began.

The Ride That Felt Like Home

La Reine isn’t your typical granfondo. It’s strictly women, beautifully tough, and utterly inspiring.

This year, more than 500 women lined up for the challenge — a stunning 140 km route with over 3,000 meters of elevation gain through the Alps. The ride itself was gorgeous — alpine climbs, sweeping valleys, and that quiet Swiss magic you can’t quite describe. But what truly made it unforgettable was the energy. We weren’t racing. We were riding together — some fast, some steady, some stopping for photos, some pushing their limits. There was space for everyone, and no need to prove anything. That freedom — to just ride as you are — is powerful.

A Tapestry of Stories on Two Wheels

What struck me most at La Reine wasn’t just the landscape — it was the women. So different, yet so united by a shared love of the ride.

There were women from all walks of life — engineers, mothers, artists, students, doctors and CEOs — each with their own reasons for being there. Some had been riding for decades, others had only recently found cycling through a friend or during lockdown. There were fearless solo travelers who’d crossed borders with panniers and maps, and women who’d never done a mountain climb until that day. Some rode with power and precision, others with joy and curiosity. One woman talked about racing with the strategy of a pro — another told me she just wanted to prove to herself she could finish. Some rode in silence, soaking in the scenery, others chatted, laughed, and sang on the climbs.

It was a reminder that cycling isn’t one type of woman. It’s a canvas for so many voices, stories, and identities. And when we come together — from different cultures, ages, and backgrounds — the result is something incredibly rich and inspiring.

We’re Not “Just Women on Bikes”

We’re often boxed in as niche, or “cute” riders because brands now offer smaller sizes and pastel kits. Yes, we love good design and a saddle that actually fits — but we’re also fierce, competitive, and deeply passionate. It’s not about women trying to ride like men. It’s about women riding like women — and redefining what that looks like. That means power, elegance, resilience, and community.

And right now, we’re in a powerful moment for women’s cycling. Just look at the Tour de France Femmes — it’s not the same distance or duration as the men’s race, and that’s OK. It’s not easier. It’s not harder. It’s different, and equally intense. The strategy, the climbs, the breakaways — it’s a different kind of battle. And it’s beautiful.

Each year, we’re seeing more media coverage, more fans at the roadside, and more young girls dreaming big. That’s how progress looks.

There’s something magical about waking up in Carezza, with the Latemar peaks catching the first light and the crisp alpine air inviting you out for a ride. Based at the stunning Alpenrose Hotel, tucked between thick forest trails and high-altitude tarmac, I had the perfect launchpad for exploring three of the Dolomites’ most iconic and character-filled climbs: Passo San Pellegrino, Passo Nigra, and Passo Carezza.

Each pass brought its own rhythm, scenery, and soul—brutal in parts, breathtaking in others. Here’s a deeper dive into each of these unforgettable ascents.

Passo San Pellegrino: A Classic Dolomiti Ascent

Distance from Moena: ~10.6

Elevation gain: ~680 m

Starting in the postcard-pretty village of Moena, the road begins sneaking upward through lush alpine pastures and small hamlets. The surface is smooth and consistent, which helps when you’re grinding through the steeps. The views open up dramatically near the top, revealing grassy ridgelines, grazing cows, and a horizon that seems to stretch across all of Trentino. At the summit (1,918 m), Rifugio Passo San Pellegrino offers not just espresso but soul-soothing silence.

Passo Nigra /Nigerpass: Wild, Winding, and Wickedly Steep

Distance: ~17.99 km

Elevation gain: ~1438 m

Average gradient: 8.00%

Max gradient: 24%

Don’t let its relative anonymity fool you—Passo Nigra (Nigerpass) is one of the Dolomites’ hidden gems for masochists. It starts deceptively tame but quickly veers into “why am I doing this?” territory. The road tightens, the forest thickens, and the gradient punches hard—sections tilt to an outrageous 24%, especially around the 5–7 km mark.

The climb feels enclosed at first, with thick pine and larch canopy providing shade—and a sense of solitude. There’s little traffic, no shops, and only the sound of your breath and shifting gears. As you rise above 1,600 meters, the trees begin to thin, and then it happens: the Rosengarten (Catinaccio) massif appears like a cathedral of rock and light.

Passo Carezza: Gentle, Glorious, and Golden-Hour Perfect

Distance from Vigo di Passo: ~9.3 km

Elevation gain: ~436 m

Average gradient: 4.7%

Max gradient: 11.2%

A mellow but rewarding climb, Passo Carezza winds through forests and alpine meadows with views of the Latemarpeeking through the trees. Mostly steady, with a few sharper ramps early on, it’s ideal for a relaxed spin or golden-hour ride. After the summit, the road opens to reveal Lago di Carezza—a sparkling gem set beneath jagged peaks. Quiet, beautiful, and unforgettable.

This climb isn’t about max heart rate—it’s about soaking in that Dolomiti dolcezza.

Where to Stay: Alpenrose Hotel, Carezza

After long hours in the saddle, Alpenrose Hotel felt like a high-mountain haven. Bike-friendly and beautifully designed, it offered secure bike storage, a spa with sauna and hot tub, and incredible South Tyrolean cuisine to replenish the soul and legs. The rooms overlook the Latemar, and the sunrise from the pool terrace? That alone is worth the trip.

Best base: Carezza is ideally located for tackling several classic passes with minimal transfers.
When to go: Late June to early September ensures snow-free summits and long daylight hours.

Rising to 2,236 meters in the heart of the Italian Dolomites, Passo Giau is one of the most iconic and awe-inspiring climbs in Europe. Whether you’re tackling it from Selva di Cadore or Cortina d’Ampezzo, this pass demands both strength and respect from every cyclist. It’s an epic road cycling route that all cyclists should have on their tick list. Thankfully, it’s also easy to get here; with access via the European road network, and international flights into the north of Italy, making it an accessible cycling holiday in Italy, for everyone.

The climb from Selva di Cadore, considered the tougher side, stretches for 10 km with a relentless average gradient of over 9% — peaking at a punishing 15% in its steepest sections. With 29 hairpin bends, this ascent is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one. The type of climb that I like, fir the nature of the challenge and the rewarding feeling at the end.

From the lush forested start, the scenery transforms dramatically. As you ascend, alpine meadows and rugged limestone peaks like Monte Nuvolau and Averau frame the road, offering stunning views that justify every drop of sweat. It’s no wonder Giau is a key feature in both the Maratona dles Dolomites and the Giro d’Italia, having even served as a dramatic Cima Coppi (the race’s highest point).

Spectacular summits

At the summit, cyclists are rewarded not only with jaw-dropping panoramic views but also with a rustic café – the perfect place to enjoy a slice of apple strudel while soaking in the Dolomitic majesty. After all, you’ve earned it, with one of the most epic cycling passes in Italy! Here’s a few basic points, to help you to plan your own cycling adventure in Italy.

• Season: Best ridden between late June and early September.
• Weather: Be prepared – even in summer, the summit can be windy and cold.
• Traffic: Early morning rides offer the quietest roads and clearest skies.

Refreshments & Where to Stay

Adequate refreshments at the start, and a rustic cafe at the summit. There’s also a good restaurant, slightly down from the summit. Take plenty of nutritional products with you.

Character

This is an alpine cycling challenge, and it will be a continual uphill ride, with few rests. Be prepared and take adequate clothing and tools with you. Be careful on the descent, and ride within your abilities.

Route

From Selva di Cadore, head along the northwards road, Via IV Novembre (SP638) which is signed for Passo Giau.
Simply set in and follow this road to the junction at the Refugio Fedare, where the SP638 swings to the right on the continuing harpins.
Just 2 km below the summit, the ristorante Da Aurelio is reached, and you have the option to return and eat here, once summited. However, there is a very good rustic hotel at the summit.

Final Thoughts

I did the climb on my new TIME Bikes Scylon, which was magical, and helped me on those tough sections. Having the right bike and the right gearing for a cycling climb such as the Passo Giau is critical. However, if you’ve got the right bike, then a road cycling trip to the Dolomites is something that all cyclists should aspire to do. Riding these epic Italian mountain passes, with some of the most extraordinarily beautiful views in Europe – it’s a once in a lifetime experience.

If you’re properly prepared – physically and mentally, for the dual challenge; and, if you are ready to ride, then a week here is something that will stay with you forever. I stayed in the Hotel Col Alto, Corvara, which is a great base for cyclists visiting the Dolomites. It’s comfortable and has great facilities – and a great Italian menu!

Looking after my TIME Scylon was easy, too, as bike storage is also well catered for. I was able to relax and chill and to and rest between rides. Off you go, then, and book your own cycling trip to the Italian Dolomites! It’s definitely TIME to ride!

Ironman Turkey 70.3 – 2024

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of competition and the camaraderie of teamwork, especially when shared in a breath-taking location. This was the essence of our experience at Ironman Turkey 70.3 in Belek, where we came together as a relay team to face the challenges of the race.

Our relay team composed of Nastya Vasyeva (swimmer), myself, Nadezhda Pavlova (cyclist), and Maria Malisheva (runner), were ready for the adventure that lay ahead. Our journey to Belek was a last-minute decision, initiated by Nastya’s invitation about a month before the race. Initially, we had our sights set on the Barcelona Triathlon Challenge , but Nastya’s partner and her friends decided to compete in Turkey, and we quickly shifted our plans.

The stunning Mediterranean coast, the vibrant atmosphere and Turkish hospitality made it an easy choice. And it was a great decision, as on the race day in Barcelona the weather condition was awful, with flooding, strong winds, and even elimination of the swim course. The weather forced it to transform the event format into a duathlon, consisting of just a bike and run.

On race day, everything fell into place perfectly, and we were excited for the fun day ahead. Nastya kicked off the race with her swim leg. Despite slightly rough waters, she completed the 1.9 km swim two loops with an Australian exit in an impressive 29 minutes. After passing the timing chip to me, I jumped on my bike. The bike course was flat, consisting of two loops totalling 90 km, and I finished my segment in 2 hours and 21 minutes.

Though I didn’t train much, I felt that I still have some strength in my legs from the summer rides in the Dolomites and Pyrenees, (I destroyed my Trek Bike during la Reine female only Granfondo in Gstaad, Switzerland, and hadn’t been putting in many miles after) but the thrill of the race kept me motivated. As I wrapped up my biking leg, Masha was ready to take on the run.

The run course was absolutely beautiful, leading through the “Land of Legends” and alongside a picturesque Venetian channel. We cheered for fellow competitors while keeping track of Masha on the Ironman app. In a funny twist, we nearly missed her at the finish line, but she quickly joined us for a second crossing together and we ran the red carpet moment together raising our hands for the perfect finish photo! Our total time was 4:22 minutes, earning us first place among the female relay teams and surpassing the first women in the individual timing by just a second! Post-race, we celebrated our victory at a beautiful Greek restaurant, enjoying pitas, Greek salads, and traditional dances with the plates breaking.

We stayed at the Gloria Sports Arena https://www.gloriasportsarena.com.tr, where champions train, could not be a better choice for athletes. The hotel has both indoor and outdoor pools, a well-equipped gym, healthy and delicious food ( it was challenging not to gain weight especially with the delicious Turkey delights, pistachio baklava and rose water lokum), and views of the running track -a paradise! We also enjoyed the unique experience of a crío sauna for recovery at -108 degrees! (I´m from Siberia and it was easy for me to stay the maximum time allowed for 3 minutes) challenge.

Reflecting on the event, I found the organization of the race to be significantly improved compared to my first experience in 2014. Celebrating the 10 anniversary of the race made it even more special. Ironman Turkey 70.3 was an unforgettable experience filled with teamwork, fun, and triumph. I wholeheartedly recommend this race to anyone seeking a rewarding triathlon challenge.

A great days ride in the heart of the Dolomites

The Dolomites are one of the most beautiful places for a cycling trip, anywhere in the world. Filled with climbs that twist and turn upwards, with the rocky peaks looking down in their majesty. This is a short route in terms of distance; but with an epic climb involved in the ride from Carezza to Corvara, via the Paso Pordio.

The Pordoi Pass marks the border between the Province of Trento and the Province of Belluno – both quite stunning areas of the Italian mountains. The road features as many as 28 hairpin bends and is one of the 4 passes of the Strada delle Dolomiti (Dolomites Road), built in the beginning of the 20th century to link Bolzano with Cortina, and to encourage the development of tourism in the Ladin valleys – which it certainly has. Cyclists love this area – and we do, here at Pedalnorth!

The route rolls out of Carezza for the first 20km, before the climbing begins, at the Paso Podio. It’s then a 10km ascent, at an average gradient of 6.6%, with a maximum gradient of 11%. In total, you ascend 791 metres over the 10km.

The stats of the whole route are as follows.

Distance: 46.14km Ascent: 1,784 metres

The second – and final climb – is a short and more relaxed effort, before the descent begins to Corvara – a renowned centre of cycling in the region. Arriving at Corvara, you can rest overnight, before tackling another route the next day – maybe a return journey. Alternatively, arrange transport to take you back to Carezza and your accommodation there. Either way, there’s great coffee, tea and biscuits to be enjoyed along the way, and at each end of the ride.

Accommodation Recommendation: Paso Carezza is an excellent hotel used to catering for cyclists, with great access to the Italian cycling passes, and excellent facilities.

Route Information

Leave Carezza and cycling on the main roads towards Pozza di Fassa at 12km.
The gradient then rises steadily over the next 10km, until you reach Campitello di Fasso, where you join the endless hairpins of the Paso Podio.
Ascent the pass for 10km, before resting and taking in the view. Wrap up warm for the descent.
At 37km, the hamlet of Araboa, the final short ascent leads to a long and sweeping descent into the Dolomites hub town of Corvarra.

Either book transport for the return, or maybe stay over here and cycle the reverse route once refreshed and rested. Corvarra has everything required for a stay here in this amazing region, and is a great base for another ride, the next day.

My Incredible Bike Ride through Stunning Mountain Passes

This year, I joined 20000 cyclists from all over the world in the beautiful Dolomites, for the exciting SELLARONDA Bike Day. It was an incredible opportunity to take on a thrilling bike ride through the stunning Sella Group of mountains free from traffic. The Dolomites are renowned across the world for their epic beauty, and for some totally amazing roads to cycle.

As I arrived in the Dolomites, I had to choose one of four valleys from which to start the ride from: Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Val di Fassa, or Arabba. Each valley has its own unique charm, making it a fun challenge to decide where to start the ride.

You have the freedom to start from any village, in any direction; but it’s advisable to ride anticlockwise as most of the cyclists go in that direction. The route covers 53 kilometres and includes breath-taking mountain passes: Passo Gardena, Passo Sella, Passo Pordoi, and Passo Campolongo. As I pedalled through these amazing mountain passes, I was treated to awe-inspiring views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, immersing myself in the natural beauty of the Dolomites – truly spectacular.

Accommodation Recommendation: Depending on where you start the ride, there are two hotel options that we recommend.

Let’s take a closer look at each climb:

1. Passo Gardena: Starting in Corvara, this pass took me to an elevation of 2,121 meters. It’s a 9.5-kilometer climb with an average slope of 5.5%.

2. Passo Sella: From Selva di Val Gardena, this pass led me to a height of 2,240 meters. The climb is about 6.5 kilometres long, with an average slope of 7.9%.

3. Passo Pordoi: Conquering this pass from Arabba, I reached an altitude of 2,239 meters. It’s a 9-kilometer climb with an average slope of 6.9%.

4. Passo Campolongo: Also starting in Arabba, this pass took me to a height of 1,875 meters. The climb is approximately 6.5 kilometres long, with an average slope of 6.2%.

The atmosphere on the SELLARONDA Bike Day was electric, with thousands of riders from all over the world, taking on the challenge. Whether you’re a pro or a casual rider, road biker or electric MTB, everyone is welcome to participate, and it adds to the atmosphere. You can go at your own pace and enjoy the ride. Along the route, there are coffee shops and rest areas where you can take a break and appreciate the scenic views. If you don’t travel with your own bike, there are also some good rental options available in Val Gardena and Corvara.

One of the best things about this trip was taking the trip with my friends. We had so much fun, and I thoroughly recommend groups of friends planning the trip together. Yes, you’ll meet like-minded cyclists from all over the world; however, there’s something special about riding in an event such as this, with close friends sharing the ride, the scenery – and tea and cake of course!

La Montée du Géant is an exciting cycling event organized by the Tour de France and Chez Octave Tourmalet shop. It takes place on the first Saturday of summer each year and attracts cycling of all levels and all kinds of bikes, from road to electric, from around the globe. This event is a dream come true for many cyclists, and I was excited to be invited, and to have the opportunity to ride up such an iconic mountain! Travelling and exploring the world, seems to be a hobby of mine – and one which I love doing by bike! This climb is something that I had wanted to cycle for so long, and to be part of such an event, it was wonderful!

The ascent of the Giant!

The name “La Montée du Géant” translates to “The Ascent of the Giant,” perfectly capturing the essence of the event. The monument is lifted up with the track at the Chez Octave shop and goes up to the top of the Tourmalet, at an altitude of 2112 meters, accompanied by music and hundreds of cyclists – this year, including me! The route offers breath-taking views of the Pyrenees mountains, and as an added bonus, if you’re lucky, you might even encounter llamas in the last few kilometers! And let’s not forget about the adorable donkeys too.

The Chez Octave bike shop itself is a work of art, housing numerous antique bikes, including the same model that Octave rode when he won the Tourmalet stage at the Tour de France in 1910. Not only can you indulge in a delicious lunch or coffee, but you can also take a shower and even ride your bike inside! It is a must-visit destination when you find yourself in the Pyrenees, specifically located in Bagnères-de-Bigorre.

As for the ride; well, the weather wasn’t great, but thankfully the scenery made up for this. Better still, this is an event and not a race; meaning that I was able to simply enjoy the whole ambience and friendly nature of the day, and to take my time in taking in the breath-taking scenery. I seem to have found a penchant for climbing classic mountains on my bike, and I do love the exhilaration and challenge of climbing. It’s even more breath-taking on climbs such as this, and I’d thoroughly recommend you doing the event next year. We began the climb ourselves from Bagnères-de-Bigorre which is perfect for your own ride. You’ll need to make sure that you have good kit, as the weather can be changeable, and that your bike is well serviced too. Accommodation in the area is plentiful and covers all budgets. Just bring a sense of adventure with you!

A Ride to adventure for all

With an altitude of altitude 2115, the Tourmalet is an epic challenge for all cyclists, and one that even the pro peloton fear. The first to ride it was Octave Lapize, completing the ride in 1910.

The current event, ridden by me this year, is organized by chez Octave yes, but alongside partners in the Département des Hautes-Pyrénées (politics) and the Tour de France (through ASO), as it falls as part of the Fête du Tour de France (Tour de France Festival). Yes, the Tourmalet is a ride that all cyclists should think about completing, and we’ve mapped out the ride to help you.

We’ve included a map and gpx file on this page, to help you to plan your own trip to the Tourmalet. Maybe I’ll see you here in the future! The ascent from the centre of the town, is around 27km and has an average gradient of 7.3% – with few breaks, so you need to be in condition. Prepare yourself, your bike, and take the right clothing for changes in conditions.

La Montée du Géant is more than just an event; it is an experience that leaves a lasting impression on all participants, and one that will stay with me forever. Save this date for next year and I’ll see you in the magnificent mountains of the Pyrenees!

Route

The route is straightforward and well-known. We’ve taken you on the quieter road initially (D8), which runs parallel with the D935.
After a short warm-up, join the D935 near Campan and ride until a junction with the D918.
It’s now a long and hard, but scenically rewarding to the summit of the Col, with some magnificent views all around.
Afterwards, descend back to the cafe and enjoy food, coffee and smiles

A ride to Rat Penat

Rat Penat, a translation from the Catalan language meaning “bat,” is an renowned cycling climb in Catalonia that offers a thrilling experience for cyclists. Situated in the Garraf range of mountains, Rat Penat poses a real challenge to every cyclist brave enough to take it on. With its steep gradients, reaching up to 23% in some sections, this climb can be compared to the famous Mortirola in Bormio.

Not only is Rat Penat a test of physical endurance, but it also offers breath-taking views along the way. Starting from Casteldefels and Gavà, cyclists can enjoy the beautiful beaches of Castelldefels during the climb. As you pedal higher, the impressive vistas of the coast unfold, as Rat Penat is located in close proximity to the sea, between Castelldefels and Sitges. Having been here in Catalonia for some time now, I thought that it was time for this Barcelona resident to hit the hills and tackle this epic climb.

Breath-taking summit

At the summit of Rat Penat to Sitges route cyclists are rewarded for the hard work, with not only a sense of accomplishment, but also the sight of the Buddhist Monastery that graces the top. This adds a unique cultural dimension to the experience, making it even more memorable. Rat Penat has gained recognition on the professional cycling stage as well, having been included in the route of the Vuelta a España in 2010 and 2013. This further attests to the challenge and allure of this climb, and makes it a climb for anyone visiting the area to have on their list of challenges.

Where to stay

For those staying in Barcelona, convenient train tickets can be purchased to reach Castelldefels, where the journey to Rat Penat begins. As I mentioned above; the combination of the challenging ascent, stunning views of the coastline, and the presence of the Buddhist Monastery, all combine to make the Rat Penat cycling climb a must-try for any cyclist exploring Catalonia. Add to this, the cultural vibrancy of Barcelona, and you’ve got the makings of a great trip.

Route

Start at the coast, cycling from the small town of Rat Perat and head upwards into Parc del Garraf. After 5 km, turn off right and ascend the short climb to the summit, then descending back to the main highway.
At 19km pass the observatory as you continue to descend sweeping roads.
At 26km pass El Mas Mila village, continuing on the BV-111 highway back south towards the coast.
Cross over the C-32 main highway and continue downwards to the coastal roads, eventually picking up the C-31 towards Rat Perat.
A short detour upwards can be taken at 39km, to Emita de la Trinitat de Sitges.

Hotel Coma

From the moment I arrived, I was greeted by the warm and attentive staff who made me feel right at home. The hotel boasts a large green area with ample parking space, providing convenience and ease of access. As I strolled through the lush surroundings, I couldn’t help but appreciate the stunning mountain views that enveloped the hotel. It was a true paradise for nature enthusiasts like myself. One of the highlights of Hotel Coma was the charming pool area. As I lounged by the poolside, I was treated to panoramic views that seemed to stretch endlessly. It was the perfect place to unwind and soak up the tranquility of the surroundings.

The hotel’s bar was a cozy retreat, offering a wide selection of beverages to enjoy after a day of cycling. I found myself drawn to the inviting fireplace, where I could relax and relish in the warmth while sipping on a delightful drink. When it came to dining, Hotel Coma exceeded my expectations. The great restaurants offered a diverse menu, showcasing both local and international cuisine. Each meal was a culinary delight, leaving me satisfied and eager to try more.
