Finding cycling locations for adventure

Recent news articles have shown that those previously welcoming Spanish islands are no longer welcoming – in fact, that’s an understatement. Protests are now frequent, and the local transport services are frankly fed up with cyclists all over the road, blocking local traffic from free passage. Ultimately, they have a valid point. There are too many visitors on two wheels,all seeking fase fame. Rather than finding peace and tranquility in the mountains, it can be like cycling around Trafalgar Square in London – and that is no fun at all.

With this in the background to any cycling holiday you plan, the question then arises: where should I go? It can be difficut to decide, but fear not. Our riders search out amazing locations so that you don’t have to. They also live in amazing places, and get to ride some epic routes whenever they like. For instance, I’m lucky enough to live on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and a short ride from the North Yorks Moors National Park, or the Howardian Hills – each as spectacular as anywhere abroad, and all challenging. There are some 2 hour rides I can take when I see only a handful of cars as I pass through picture-postcard villages that look like film sets. And, if I plan correctly, I can ride all day and see very fewcars or people, weaving along winding country roads, and descending ribboned roads that fall magically across the sublime landscape.

Cafe stops for cyclists who love cake

One of the great things about riding here in North Yorkshire are the cafe stops. The baking is unrivalled, and the choice of teas and coffees is also superb. They’ve been catering for tourists for a long time, and they know exactly haow to refill and replenish those carbs.

Whether you choose the famed ‘Cafe in the Square’ at rural Masham, or the Leadout Cycling Clubhouse cafe at Bedale, you can guarentee that the refreshments will be worth a future visit. Fundamentally too, cycling should be about taking the time to relax with friends over coffee and cake, and shre those epic riding moments. Creating memories is far more important than collecting Strava kudos.

When I’m overseas, I also have favourite cafe stops. Lumos in Sibiu, Transylvania is amazing, nestled in the centre of this historic World Heritage Site city centre – a living musuem that burns into your heart and soul. Their toasted snacks and salads are to die for – following which you can cycle out to Paltinis with the Carpathian Mountains rising beside you. Or alternatively, ride out to one of the nearby villages, with Saxon history all around you – fortified churches, cottages and cobbles. And, if you visit Sibiu in July, you also get to see their world famous FITS Arts Festival – second globally to the famed Edinburgh Festival – but for me, Sibiu FITS is far better. There’s also the chance to cycle up the famed Transfagarasan Road in a closed road sportive event.

Jeremy Clarkson rightly called this ‘the best road in the world’, and having cycledit twice, I have to agree.

Cycling some of the best roads & trails in Europe

If Sibiu and Transylvania isn’t yet on your radar, then give your head a shake. As well as being home to writers here at Pedalnorth, Alex and Teodora, and previously to Larisa who wrote for us for 7 years, Sibiu and the surrounding Fagaras Mountains are home to some of the best road cycling routes in Europe. The UCI and UEC have also noticed the quality of the trails, with nearby mountan resorts hosting world class mountain biking championships.

There’s the epic TRIADA Mountain Bike race series throughout the year, with routes planned by former Olympian , Tudor Oprea. Whether you ride enduro, trail bike, cross country mtb or even gravel, the forested mountains will provide you with seemingly endless trails, and superb apre cycling in nearby Sibiu.

Where are the best places to ride – be surprised

It’s an interesting question: where are the best places for a cycling holiday? I’m not convinced that its where it used to be – those crowded roads and crwded towns are not as welcoming as they once were. Thankfully though, both North Yorkshire and Transylvania share several key ingrediants for the best cycling trip in Europe:

Likewise, Sibiu has an international airport, with direct flights from London, Munich, Madrid, Milan, Vienna and Rome, it’s even more accessible. Once here, you can stay in 4 star quality hotels, such as my own favourite, The Art Hotel in Sibiu’s old town, walking distance from everything, and with a pedestrianised city centre allowing you soak up the myriad of historic buildings. Some trips stand out not just for the trails, but for the stories that unfold along the way. Our first trip with Peter from Ireland was one of those special ones — three unforgettable days of riding across the best trails around Păltiniș and Rășinari, filled with breath-taking views, great conversations, and the kind of mountain magic that reminds us why we love doing this.

Peter is a true mountain biking nomad. He’s travelled with his bike to nearly every corner of the world — from the Scottish Highlands to the Andes, from the forests of British Columbia to the deserts of Morocco. But this was his first time riding in Romania, and we couldn’t wait to show him what our mountains had to offer.

Day One — Creasta Porumbelului: The Ridge of the Doves

We kicked off the adventure with a local classic — Creasta Porumbelului, the “Ridge of the Doves.” The morning started cool and clear, sunlight flickering through the beech trees as we pedalled out of the village. The trail climbed gently at first, then steepened into a steady ascent through pine forest.

When we reached the top, the reward was instant. The ridge stretched ahead like a ribbon of trail between sky and valley, rolling across open alpine meadows with views that seemed to go on forever. Peter stopped for a long moment, taking it all in. “I’ve ridden a lot of places,” he said, smiling, “but I’ve never seen anything quite like this.”

The descent was pure joy — technical in spots, fast and flowing in others, with wide-open corners that begged for speed. By the time we reached the bottom, everyone was buzzing with adrenaline and grinning ear to ear.

Day Two — The Long Ride through Păltiniș

Day two was all about distance and discovery. We set out early for a full day exploring the Păltiniș area — a long route connecting the best of the local trails into one epic loop.

The weather couldn’t have been better: crisp mountain air, perfect trail conditions, and sunlight streaming through the trees. The climbs were steady and satisfying, rewarded by long, flowing descents that danced through the forest. We passed through quiet glades, crossed wooden bridges over small mountain streams, and stopped often to admire the views. The highlight came in the afternoon when we dropped into the famous Rollercoaster section — a twisting, rolling ribbon of dirt that had Peter whooping with delight all the way down. “That’s world-class,” he said at the bottom, shaking his head in disbelief.

Day Three — Magura and the Hills of Rasinari

Our final day took us to one of the most beautiful and underrated areas in the region: the rolling hills of Rasinari and the trails around Magura Peak.

The route began with a steady climb through forest and pastureland, passing shepherd huts and curious cows who looked up as we pedaled by. The air was softer, the light golden, and the whole landscape seemed to slow down. At the top of Magura, the view stretched all the way to the Fagaras Mountains — a sea of peaks and valleys bathed in sunlight.

The descent was the perfect finale — a mix of flowing lines, natural rock gardens, and meadow trails that carried us all the way back toward the village. Peter was in his element, carving through the turns and laughing the whole way down. “If I lived here,” he said at the bottom, “I’d never stop riding.”

We finished the trip with a relaxed lunch in Rasinari, sitting outside with local cheese, bread, and coffee. The conversation drifted between trails, travel, and the shared feeling that we’d just experienced something truly special.

The End — and the Beginning

As Peter packed up his bike, the mountains stood quiet in the background, as if waiting for the next ride. For him, it had been a first taste of Romania — three days that combined adventure, culture, and connection. For us, it was a reminder of how powerful these trips can be: strangers becoming friends, trails turning into stories, and moments becoming memories.

Before he left, Peter said, “This won’t be my last time here.”

We believed him. And as the mountains glowed in the late afternoon sun, we couldn’t help but smile — because neither will it be ours.

A Ride to Remember

Two Epic Days with Chris and John in Păltiniș

Every great ride tells a story — about the trails, the people, and the moments in between. Our first trip with Chris from the UK and John from South Africa was exactly that kind of story: two unforgettable days of mountain adventure, world-class riding, and the kind of camaraderie that only comes from sharing the trail.

Chris and John are true globetrotters on two wheels. They’ve pedaled through the wild landscapes of Peru and the lush jungles of Costa Rica — always in search of that perfect mix of challenge, flow, and freedom that defines great mountain biking. When they arrived in Romania to explore the trails around Păltiniș and Rășinari, we knew we had something special to show them.

Day One — Discovering Păltiniș

The trip kicked off under a clear blue sky, the air crisp and cool — perfect riding weather. After a hearty breakfast and the usual round of gear checks, we rolled out toward the forest. The Păltiniș trails were in ideal condition: dry, fast, and grippy, weaving through tall pines and open meadows.

From the very first descent, it was clear that Chris and John were in their element. Chris rode with that effortless British smoothness — always composed, always in control — while John brought his trademark South African energy, attacking every section with a grin and a cheer. The combination made for the perfect pace: fast enough to keep it exciting, but relaxed enough to soak in the beauty of the Carpathians.

We spent the day exploring the best of Păltiniș: flowing descents, tight switchbacks, and punchy climbs that opened up to sweeping views across the valleys. Every stop turned into a photo session and a moment to just breathe in the mountain air.

The highlight came in the afternoon, when we dropped into Rollercoaster — one of the most beloved trails in the region. True to its name, it’s a thrilling ride of perfectly shaped berms, smooth jumps, and rolling flow that carries you from start to finish with a smile plastered across your face. When we regrouped at the bottom, both Chris and John were speechless for a second — then came the verdict.

“That,” Chris said, shaking his head with a grin, “is one of the best trails we’ve ever ridden — anywhere.”

Hearing that from two riders who’ve traveled the world on their bikes meant the world to me.

Day Two — The Ridge Above Rășinari

The next morning greeted us with rain. Soft at first, then steady — the kind of rain that makes you wonder if it’s worth riding at all. But as every true mountain biker knows, sometimes the wettest days become the most memorable ones.

So, we geared up and headed out for the ridge above Rășinari. The trails were slick and challenging, but the misty atmosphere gave the landscape a completely different kind of magic. The forest dripped with rain, the smell of pine was stronger, and the mountains disappeared and reappeared through rolling clouds. The climbs demanded focus, the descents tested our grip, and yet every muddy corner only added to the fun. There was something raw and real about it — the kind of ride that strips away everything except the joy of movement and the connection with the place around you.

At the top of the ridge, we stopped to take it all in. The village lay below, wrapped in mist, and despite the rain, the mood was pure happiness. We were soaked, muddy, and smiling like kids. “This,” John said, laughing as he wrung water from his gloves, “is one to remember.”

By the time we rolled back into Rășinari, the rain had eased and the clouds were breaking apart.

A Perfect Start to exploring with clients… and new friends

When Chris and John packed up their bikes and we said our goodbyes, there was that familiar post-trip feeling — part satisfaction, part nostalgia, and already a hint of excitement for what’s next. In just two days, we’d shared more than trails. We’d shared experiences, challenges, and stories that connect riders across continents.

The Carpathians had once again proven what makes them special: diverse trails, spectacular views, and a sense of freedom that keeps you coming back. And, as Chris and John said to me before leaving: “Romania deserves to be on every rider’s map.”

For us, this trip was a reminder of what mountain biking is all about — good people, great trails, and memories that stay long after the mud is washed away.

We’re really excited to announce that we’ll be working closely with the team at TRIADA and the ‘Trilogy of the Trails’, to develop a 4-day epic off-road route for gravel riders and mountain bikers. The route will explore the amazing trails in and around Paltinis and Avrig, and the Fagaras Mountains (part of the Carpathians), taking you into the vast mountain forests, the open mountain meadows, and riding in singletrack heaven beneath some of the beautiful mountain peaks of Transylvania.

With Romania’s oldest mountain resort at Paltinis as the base and starting point for this ride, being only 30km from the World Heritage city of Sibiu, you’ll be able to fly here from all over the world, to take on the Trails of Triada’ at your own relaxed pace, all year long – dependent on the mountain weather of course! Yes, it’s an opportunity for gravel bikers and mountain bikers from all over the world, to challenge yourself on unique mountain trails, as you ride a future classic route, on your own epic adventure in Transylvania!

A Route for all Riders

We want this new off-road ride to be accessible to all levels of rider, and for both gravel bikes and mountain bikes. As we develop our route, we’ll be taking time to ensure that there’s sections to take you onto your own specific adventure option – chilled out trial options and some epic technical options too.

The benefit of riding here in Transylvania is that we have the largest undiscovered area of mountain forests and trails in Europe. We’re rightly described as Europe’s last great wilderness, and we’re also home to amazing cultural centres such as Sibiu – a magical, medieval city, and one of the most beautiful small cities in Europe.

We want to include ideal gravel bike specific sections, making sure that you can ride and smile all day long – for 4 whole days. And, we’ll be bringing you a selection of the very best accommodation options, trail support and local guides too. ‘On the trails of TRIADA’ will be a truly epic challenge, that will promote this beautiful mountain region, and bring it to the attention of more people, seeking to rediscover life on 2-wheels!

The Sweet Sound of Singletrack Heaven

There’s nothing finer on a mountain bike, than sweeping along sweet singletrack trails, with the rocky ground crunching beneath the wheels; or swooping through the forests on tight and twisting trails that seem endless. Thankfully, both Paltinis and Avrig have hundreds of kilometres to explore; all within easy reach of Sibiu as a great travel and logistics hub. Both Paltinis and Avrig have great accommodation options too, for all budgets.

As we develop this new and exciting project, in time for spring 2025, we’ll also be looking at the option to add an introduction ride day, making the tour a 5-day ride direct from the centre of Sibiu, warming up on the rolling trails that take you alongside the scenic Romanian countryside, as you climb into the mountains and head to Paltinis and the start of the epic ‘Trails of TRIADA’ multi-stage adventure route.

Working closely with the TRIADA team and Tudor Oprea, this 4-day route will ensure that we continue to inspire, encourage and influence the next generation of cyclists seeking adventure. We also want to promote the amazing culture, history and countryside of Transylvania and Sibiu County – one of the most spectacular areas of Europe. The ‘Trails of TRIADA’ route will actively promote a healthy lifestyle, and encourage people to explore the countryside in a balanced way, promoting sustainability tourism. Riding your own road to adventure in Transylvania

Life isn’t always as smooth as we’d like it to be. Modern life can be chaotic, unpredictable and filled with detours that challenge us both mentally and physically. We live in a world where at times, it seems that image is more important to people than integrity, and where the truth and reality of day to life is seen as a scary entry into reality.

Finding a challenge – a real challenge – is therefore, more important to us than ever. Something that we can control and focus on, and which at the same time, helps to return us to that positive state of mind that is so necessary in life. Yes, cycling releases endorphins – those all-important elements that create happiness – but finding the place and the event that fits the bill isn’t always easy.

After all, the cycling world to frequently seems to be filled with a bland group of events based solely on commercialisation, saying ‘ride this road’, ‘burst a lung on this climb’ and ‘ride in crowds of wannabees’ on some Spanish Island, where your chances of solitude are about as remote as finding Unicorn pooh in some magical forest – it’s simply isn’t going to happen. And so, it’s thankfully quite refreshing to know that there is still a place in the world, and an event to really challenge yourself on, and that actually means something – welcome then to the Transfăgărășan Challenge, and the opportunity to cycle up what is correctly described as the most spectacular ribbon of tarmac in the world – the Transfăgărășan Highway, in Romania.

A challenge of epic proportions

The Transfăgărășan Highway is a unique and quite spectacular road, high in the Fagaras Mountains of Transylvania, close to the World Heritage Site, historic city of Sibiu – which, over the years has probably become one of my favourite places on earth. I’ve fallen in love with this medieval tapestry of tranquillity, nestled beneath the mountains; and I’ve fallen in love with the mountains where escapism is still possible, and where adventure seems to await you around every bend in the road – and there are many – and around every turn on every track in the vast forests that line the lower slopes of the Carpathians. It’s as though God himself dropped a long length of ribbon across the mountains, and people simply tarmacked on top of it. The road weaves endlessly and creates surprises at every turn. There’s even bears in the forests that line the lower slopes – bears, in modern day Europe!

The Transfăgărășan Challenge cycling event is in its 4th year now, with the epic road being closed in advance of the UCI professional Sibiu Cycling Tour race, and it allows for a select group of amateur riders the unique opportunity to cycle upwards for over 24km, into the high mountain pass, and to feel that spirit of true adventure, as the road simply winds its way slowly, through forest and onto sheep meadows, before opening up a magical and unbelievable scene of sublime tranquillity, as the summit beckons you.

Challenging yourself is often the hardest part

Riding the event myself in 2022 and 2023, I’d been through one of those life moments, where a new focus was required, and I desperately needed to be able to escape from the world for just a short period. I needed to find inner peace again, as many of us do daily – if the false existence of social media allows. In March 2022, I’d lost my older brother – still too young – when he passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack during the pandemic. Then, one year later, I lost a very dear friend to cancer, aged only 44, and my mother also, in a few short weeks. So, you see; my life is no different from your own. It’s filled with challenges and despair and worry, and we struggle at times to stay positive.

However, as I cycled up the Transfăgărășan, I simply looked into the forests, and across the high meadows to the mountain peaks, and I set my own challenge – to ride alongside those people I’d lost and to remember them. To close my mind to the world and to find some inner peace as I turned the cranks. My only challenge was to stay on the pedals and to not stop – all the way to the summit of this quite beautiful and quite remote road.

I was out of condition – I still am. It takes time to recover from life at times. However, I recall smiling and feeling an inner calm as I climbed – on both occasions. I was overwhelmed by the beauty and solitude and majesty of the Transylvanian mountains. I had found that challenge for my soul and for my spirit, and the endorphins were racing once more. I’d also been welcomed into the hearts of the people of Sibiu, and I had that reassurance that comes with happiness. This was my challenge, and my heart began to dance once more as I rode higher and higher.

The magical city of Sibiu – World Heritage Site

Sibiu is an undiscovered oasis of magical possibilities and has a wealth of great hotels and other places to stay. My own favourite place is the 4-star Art Hotel, close to Piata Mare (the main square), and near to the Lumos Cafe, which is in my own humble opinion, one of the very best coffee shops and cafes in Europe. You can also fly direct to Sibiu from London, meaning that it’s easily accessible from anywhere.

However, the very best element of the Transfăgărășan Challenge – well, that’s the huge group of willing volunteers that give their time in advance and on the day, to put together what is probably one of the best cycle sportive events in Europe. It certainly has the potential to beat all others. Imagine it; riding in sweet solitude up the most spectacular road in the world, amongst friendly people. The event is limited to only 500 riders too, meaning that it’s possible to enjoy the ride, without being surrounded all the time by wannabee Chris Froome’s. No, the only challenge here is conquering the mountain pass the Transfăgărășan Highway and finding true adventure within the warm embrace of Transylvania, rightly described as Europe’s last [and most beautiful] wilderness.

Rides & Routes in Transylvania

Paltinis & Sibiu County

The mountain resort of Paltinis, 30km from Sibiu, was the first mountain tourist resort in Romania and is famous throughout this part of Europe. The trails here are easily accessible, and have a great mix of long, all-day rides for leisure and a scenic tour, or a more fast-paced technical epic for adrenaline junkies.

Paltinis is also home to the renowned TRIADA MTB Race Series and their new ‘Trilogy of the Trails Festival. It’s a superb place for gravel riders too, and our team are happy to guide gravel riders along some of the best rocky trails you’ll ever experience, amongst the trees and bears – yeas bears – of our magnificent forests!

Brasov County for European Epics

Brasov is home to the 2024 European Mountain Bike Championships, and has some epic mountain adventure trails to explore. Places like Busteni, with the steep sided tree-lined trails, and the epic descents from our high mountain trails to the mountain resort of Magura will leave you breathless, with memories to last a lifetime.

The Bucegi are a truly spectacular series of mountains in Romania, reaching as high as 2507 at Omu Peak. The centre of the city is car-free too, with the main square, Piata Mare, and the other numerous squares all filled with places to explore, take in the surroundings, eat and socialise with friends after a tough day riding in the nearby mountains.

In late June too, Sibiu holds an international arts festival (FITS Festival), second only globally to the famed Edinburgh Festival; with free concerts each evening in Piata Mare, and so much else to see and watch. Add to this that Sibiu International Airport has direct flights from London and other European cities, and you can see how accessible this amazing place is for adventure seekers and history lovers. Depending on the tour that we create for you, as stated above, we can book you into a hotel or AirBNB in Sbiu, or, if it suits the tour better, we will book accommodation in the mountain, using one of the many excellent hotels or lodges. Transylvania has been welcoming tourists for centuries and there are options for every budget, and it’s easy for us to cater for small or large groups.

In terms of dining, there’s a superb selection of food options available, from local cuisine, to Italian, Greek, Mexican fine dining or plain and simple burgers. The mountains have lodges and places to eat for adventure seekers too, during the day, meaning that all you have to do is to create an appetite with some great mountain biking all day long!

We’ll arrange transport each day, to and from the accommodation chosen, taking you and your group to the very best trails. Bikes will be checked at the end of each day, and we’ll make sure that you’re ready to ride each morning.

Getting here

Both Sibiu and nearby Brasov have international airports, with flights from London, Munich and elsewhere. Wizz Air are the main carrier and bikes are often seen on flights to Transylvania, which attracts both road and mountain bike riders from all around the world.

We’ll arrange to meet you at the airport, take you to your accommodation and make sure that you’re settled in and have all that you need for the ride of your life – in the captivating Carpathian Mountains and the awesome natural trails.

Transylvania, a fascinating and quite beautiful region of Romania, has been central to European history for centuries. In more modern times, we tend to think of it simply in terms of the quite false literary account of Count Dracula. In truth, there’s so much more to Bran Castle than vampires, and there is definitely lots more to see and do when exploring what is rightly known as Europe’s last great wilderness.

The Carpathian Mountains are simply spectacular and sublime, with the endless forests and high meadows, that rise with the light coloured rocks standing sentinel over historic villages and towns. Sibiu, sitting nestled in the shadows of these mountains, is a world heritage site, with streets and squares closed to traffic and more historical buildings than you could dream of. Add to this that it has an international airport, with direct flights from London, Munich and elsewhere, and that its art festival (FITS) is second only to Edinburgh, then you’d be right in asking yourself “Why haven’t I been here already!”

Find your soul on sublime trails

There’s always been a heart-felt connection between the mountains and the human spirit. It recharges our soul and warms our heart, as we ride of hike or climb further into the hills, feeling that spiritual connection. Coming from a mountaineering and climbing background as I do, I recall those long hikes in to crags, weighed down by heavy rucksacks filled with gear, but lightened by the feeling inside of me. It’s still the same these days, as an older, greying version of me rides into the mountains on a very light and nimble Orbea Oiz mountain bike. I feel refreshed and warmed and alive once more. Last year, after a troubling time and too much loss in too short a period of time, it was to the mountains that I retreated, taking regular hikes in solitude and rediscovering myself.

Whilst I live on the edge of the quite beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park, my heart seems to lie in Transylvania and its transfixing mountains, and amidst the history and majestic medieval history of Sibiu – probably my favourite town or city on earth. I love the people of the place, their warmth and kindness, their spirit of adventure and their friendliness and generosity. They are to me, unequalled in their altruism and love for life. Whilst here in the U.K. we seem to be largely focused on self interest these days, and the fitness of our nation is woeful at best – yes, it’s true – in Sibiu, you walk and ride freely and uninterrupted by the absence of annoyance and the wealth of warmth that shines from the smiling faces of the local people. Romania and Transylvania is an area of Europe that is finally discovering its place in Europe, and it will quite rightly be at the centre of the action and adventure scene, with the Carpathian Mountains taking centre stage. Yes, you can head to the alps and take a week of uplifts, riding down busy trails in busy towns and the mountain biking equivalent of Trafalgar Square, or you can find your soul, exploring the endless trails of Transylvania – you choose.

Places to ride

There are so many options for riding here in Transylvania, that you’re literally spoilt for choice. However, basing yourself in Sibiu is always a good option. It has a superb international airport close to the city centre (15 minute drive), a wealth of history and culture, great restaurants and the ability to eat outside and enjoy the historic buildings, and a tourism and hotel network that is skilled in catering for travellers from around the world. My own favourite hotel is the Art Hotel, close to Piata Mare.

Travelling out to Paltinis, the mountain resort, is a mere 30km or so away, and car or van hire is cheap here too. On my own trips, we’ve always pre-booked a minibus and driver, which when split between the group is cheap and reliable, and you get their local knowledge too. In terms of the trails, you can ride for an hour or all day long. Many local mountain bikers take to the mountains on all day rides, exploring the high trails, all of which are well signed. And, with research, you’ll find mountain huts scattered in the hills, where you can get refreshments. However, the trails can also be long and isolated, so we’d recommend taking a well-packed Camelbak backpack, with fluids, snacks, spares for repairs and an extra jacket for if the weather cools down too much.

In terms of the weather here, in summer it can frequently be 30+ degrees in Sibiu, with 20/25+ in the mountains, albeit cooler higher up, so where sun protection too. Paltinis is the oldest mountain resort in Romania, and is also the home venue of the epic TRIADA mountain bike race series, organised by Tudor Oprea and the team, from TRIADA. Tudor is a former Olympic mountain bike rider and manager for the national team these days. His knowledge of the area and its trails is encyclopedic, which is why he’s our partner editor for the region. The trails recommended by the amazing guy, will be some of the best that you’ll ever ride – anywhere in the world.

TRIADA & the Trilogy of the Trails

With thousands of miles of trails to explore, and a forested paradise for mountain bike lovers, it was only a matter of time before a world-class event idea to came into being. Tudor Oprea and the TRIADA race series team and taking things to a whole new level for 2024 and beyond, with the new off-road biking festival, ‘the Trilogy of the Trails.’

Taking place over three weekends, in April, late June and September, using Avrig near Sibiu and also Paltinis, the new event is designed for 3 different bike riding styles: E-Bike, mountain bike, and finally, the growing genre of gravel biking. Yes, riders from all three disciplines can take to the foothills and mountains, and find their own challenge, as each weekend event has entries at all levels, from young kids, weekend warriors to elite and world class riders. There are also equal events for men and for women, which we like here at Pedalnorth, being the biggest promoter of ladies cycling online.

It’s March already and the cycling season has already begun – on tarmac and trail. Riders are heading into garages and sheds all over Europe, oiling up their drivetrains and starting to think of those great trail adventures once more. With gravel riding still on the rise, there’s one more bike to add to the collection – isn’t there always – and even more excuses to travel in search of the ultimate adventure. However, look no further, because we think that we’ve found it – deep in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania – Transylvania to be process, and close to the beautiful, historic city of Sibiu, a World Heritage Site and one of thee most beautiful small cities in Europe.

Yes, Europe’s last great wilderness awaits you as Tudor Oprea and the team at TRIADA MTB develop their epic off-road event and take it to new levels. With riders all over our global cycling community, looking for the next great trail – Tudor has a wealth of them for you explore.

Ride magical forests in transfixing Transylvania

‘The Trilogy of the Trails’ is the all-new concept from this inspiring rider from Romania, a former Olympian. It takes in 3 different venues, over 3 different weekends throughout the year, and includes 3 different bike types: E-MTB, MTB XC and Gravel Bike. With races starting at Avrig, near Sibiu in April, the second event is at Romania’s oldest mountain resort, Paltinis in June, and coincides with the internally renowned Sibiu FITS Arts Festival, one of the best in the world and which is second only to Edinburgh. With so much happening, and an international airport only 15 minutes from the medieval city centre – much of which is car free – Sibiu and the ‘Trilogy of the Trails’ is definitely the place to be in summer 2024! The 3rd and final epic weekend is in mid-September, again at Paltinis.

There are categories all the way from the very youngest of riders – small kids, all the way through to Elite men and women, with everyone else fitted in too. Yes, everyone can come and find their own adventure , and choose which bike to ride: gravel bike, mountain bike or e-mountain bike. Tudor and the team have been planning this for a long time, and the Trilogy of the Trails is designed to be inclusive for everyone, to help to promote and to develop cycling and adventure in harmony with the mountains in this exceptional place.

Paltinis and these epic forested mountains have been favourites of ours for many years, and is the home venue for our own Alex Sabin and Teo Sabine. You can literally ride for hours on isolated tracks, with some of the most spectacular alpine views in Europe. Paltinis as we say, will also be the host for the 3rd and final weekend of the Trilogy, in September, when the air is still warm, but with a cooling breeze, and the city squares of Piata Mica and Piata Mare are waiting for you to relax post-ride. The nearby airport has direct flights from London and elsewhere across Europe, and hotels like our favourite – the Art Hotel on Strada Centumvirilor – are ready and waiting to share their warm Romanian hospitality with you.

Get Ready to Ride

Heading to the Romanian Mountains

It’s a year now, since I was cycling upwards, in the hills close to the historic city of Sibiu, deep in Transylvania. I returned again in winter, visiting people I regard as family, and the wonderful Sibiu Christmas market. It’s a city that’s easy to fall in love with, filled with amazing architecture, a warm ambience and some of the most beautiful mountains in Europe. I can see why the city is a designated World Heritage Site, and why it was chosen as the European City of Culture in 2007. The city authorities continue to develop Sibiu too; and, each time I visit, there are positive changes to see.

In early July, along with Nadezhda, I’ll be writing about the 4-day UCI ‘Sibiu Cycling Tour’ and riding both the Transfagarasan & Paltinis Challenge events, on the 7th and 8th of July; hoping to complete each epic ascent before being mown up by the approaching pro riders. Best of all, we’ll be joined by Larisa and Cristian, both of whom are lucky enough to live in this magical place.

I seem to have spent the greater part of my lifetime travelling and exploring new places; and yet, at the top of all the places I’ve been to – whether as a hiker, a biker, a climber, or a history seeking cultural tourist – is always the wonderful city of Sibiu. I’ve even got a favourite hotel: the Art Hotel, in the centre, close to Piata Mare. I could easily lose myself in Sibu and never get bored, with the wealth of places to see, and being wrapped in the warmth of the local people.

Riding the Roads

Last year was the second edition of the Transfagarasan Challenge, and it attracted 500 amateur cyclists from around the world. This year, for the third edition, Martin, Dani and the team have added a new challenge to proceedings, with the Paltinis Challenge – taking place on the following day, the 8th July. Yes, as well as cycling up the best road in the world – the Transfagarasan, on the 7th – you can now follow this up, by cycling to the oldest resort in Romania, Paltinis. Whilst shorter than the Transfagarasan Challenge, at only 19 km, the climb to Paltinis is however steeper, and lined with sublime views of the Cindrel Mountains.

Larisa Chinces, our former writer from Sibiu, knows this winding ribbon of mountain tarmac, as a young Deer instinctively knows the forest tracks – having ridden it countless times, and driven it daily as a ski instructor at the winter resort for years now. This year, the road will be closed from all traffic, as we mere mortals challenge ourselves on the ascent, hoping that the toils of the Transfagarasan haven’t taken too much of a toll the day before. One thing is certain, though; the views will be sublime, and the cycling company will be beyond equal. Afterwards, we’ll share wine, conversation, smiles and the warmth of each other’s company, as we dine in the evening light, seated around the edges of Piata Mare, with the slitted medieval rooftop eyes, famed throughout Europe, looking down on us.

Is Sibiu the Best Cycling City in Europe

I truly believe that, when analysing what people such as Martin, Dani and Emanuel (from the city council) have achieved so far, along with looking at the potential that Sibiu has; there is a valid argument for putting Sibiu on the list as the next ‘big thing’ in cycle tourism. It has an international airport only a 15-minute cab ride from the centre, a wealth of accommodation choices, beautiful architecture and a wealth of history, including the truly epic Astra Museum. It has one of the world’s best arts festivals, with street concerts and theatre shows displaying artists from dance, music, literature and the visual arts, coming from all corners of the world. The city has a new network of km after km of safe cycle paths, and city bikes to hire; and, the main squares and streets are traffic free.

Oh, did I mention the best mountain biking you’re ever likely to find too. In fact, the Paltinis Challenge gives you a choice of ascent: road or mtb race. Yes, you’ll need to book your own trip to magical Sibiu soon, as this place is getting hot – and not just in the meteorological sense. My own Bike Box Alan is ready and waiting, and my Bianchi bike is primed to climb. I’ve booked breakfast with friends, at the Café Lumos near Piata Mare, and I’ll be catching up with UCI team friends too, as the pros ride the 4-day tour race. Yes, Sibiu holds a place in my heart, and this year, I’m especially looking forward to cycling to Paltinis and then baking cake for Adi, Irina and Larisa, and sharing wine and laughter with Cristian, Nadezhda, Georgiana, Alan and Wendy. Yes, for me, Sibiu is probably the best place in Europe for a cycle tourism vacation, but I guess I’m biased – I’ve already fallen in love with the city.

The Countdown to Adventure Begins

Welcome to Sibiu

If you still don’t know where the Transfăgărășan Highway is, and that it’s described by many as ‘the best road in the world’, then give your head a shake please!

This epic ribbon of tarmac, winds its way chaotically across the mountains, close to the historic city of Sibiu, in Transylvania, Romania – itself a World Heritage Site. Yes, this medieval city, which was the 2007 European city of Culture, has so much to see and to do on a trip here. All that you need is a sense of adventure, and Sibiu will do the rest – especially cycling-wise!

When we look around the world of cycle tourism, training camps, and general cycling challenges abroad, there’s now a wealth of options, and yet too often people stick to the same old menu. Well, there’s a new recipe available for riders, and it’s based in transfixing Transylvania, and more specifically, the city of Sibiu, with its international airport linking global travellers, and a magical city centre that’s free from cars, has cycling lanes to all manner of places worth visiting, and some exceptional hotels, such as our own favourite, The ’Art Hotel’ right in the centre. OH, did I also mention ‘Café Lumos’ for great coffee and cake!

Transfăgărășan Highway

The Transfăgărășan Challenge aims to offer amateur cyclists the chance to enjoy an extraordinary race on the most spectacular road in Romania, if not the world, while giving the feeling of a professional race. The competition is scheduled as part of the Sibiu Cycling Tour, as a pre-race before the professional competition; when the best riders in the world take on the challenge of this spectacular climb. The first edition took place in 2021 and was born out of the desire and passion of a small group of people, who wanted to create an amateur competition on the Transfăgărășan road that they could turn into a tradition.

We believe that they’ve surpassed themselves, and have created what we think is one of the greatest mass-participation cycling events globally. Last year, we based ourselves in nearby Sibiu and joined our locally based team of writers and photographers, to ride the road for ourselves – and it definitely lived up to expectations.

For 2023, we’re riding the Transfăgărășan Challenge with a team, led by locally based rider and editor, Larisa, joined by Nadezhda (over from Barcelona), and Robert (from the Yorkshire Dales Nat. Park). Training is well under way, and it’s going to be an exciting few days, as we gather together in Sibiu for cycling, sun and fun!

No Time to Rest

The event takes place on the 7th July, and once we’re all safely back in Sibiu, we’ll be looking after those climbing legs and heading to Paltinis on the next morning, riding the famous road to the mountain resort. It’s a shorter event, Paltinis Challenge, but has a sting in its tail, being steeper than Transfăgărășan – we know. What have we let ourselves in for! However, life is not a dress-rehearsal and it’s all about adventure and creating memories. With 2 such epic events for ordinary riders from around the world to ride in, why wouldn’t you; and, Sibiu is such a magical city too, with excellent post-ride hospitality to be enjoyed with friends.

Yes, you can find new adventures on 2 -wheels, and you can mix the trip with culture, history and magical scenery. All you have to do is fly to Sibiu, in transfixing Transylvania, and join Larisa and the team in the new cycling revolution. Romania is still largely undiscovered by many ordinary cyclists; and yet, we feel it’s unequalled in so many aspects – why not visit Sibiu and find out for yourself

Where to Stay

Our choice of hotel is my own personal favoruite, the Art Hotel, situated right in the very centre of the city, on Strada Centumvirilor. It’s a super friendly place to stay, modern and clean, yet with a beautiful historic exterior. The staff are super helpful, and the hotel even has a small car that guests can hire for the day, if you want to explore the surrounding villages.

The Next Big Thing

When you consider what it takes to become a cycle tourism hotspot, Sibiu is already well-placed to join up the dots, with the potential to be one the best places in the world for cycle tourists looking for adventure – on tarmac or trail.

It has a 10-day world class arts festival, second only to the Edinburgh Festival, and it’s truly awesome, with cultural acts from around the world in the city centre, and concerts nightly. There’s an international airport, with direct flights from major cities,such as London and Munich. The medieval city centre is a World Heritage Site, and is simply beautiful. The mountain roads are unsurpassed, with the Transfagarasan leading the way.

What Martin, Dani and the team at Transfagarasan Challenge have achieved is simply great, and this team of volunteers are helping to put Sibiu and Transylvania on the global cycling map. The event is already a classic in this part of Europe, and will only grow, as more and more cyclists, and the world’s leading cycling brands take notice of the epic nature of Transylvania and its potential.
