My Road to Salzkammergut

16th overall — 10h 07min — 202 km — 7,000 m of elevation

Salzkammergut is one of the toughest mountain bike races in Europe, and after finishing it, I can honestly say that the elevation profile doesn’t really tell the whole story. Austria has a particular image for all of us who love the mountains, and this race was something both beautiful and testing.

I had a small plan going into the race, but since this was my first time racing for around ten hours, I knew most of what I needed to learn would happen out on the course. The elevation profile makes it look like the biggest challenge comes at the beginning and the end; but in reality, the climbs in the middle are the ones that slowly destroy you. They don’t necessarily look impressive on the graph, but after hours of riding they become brutal. They slowly eat into you and your reserves of energy and willpower. The race is a battle in so many ways.

Planning and preparation

My only real preparation specifically for the race was getting used to waking up much earlier than usual during the two weeks before it. The start was at 5:00 AM, which meant breakfast at 3:00. I arrived in the area on Wednesday and, much to my coach’s frustration, rode a little more than planned because I wanted to recon as much of the course as possible. That turned out to be extremely useful, especially towards the end. I rode the final two long climbs, the last descent and several of the flatter sections between the villages, so I knew what was waiting for me when things got difficult.

The day before the race, the organisers also required an official bike inspection – something new for me. After racing, I understood why they take it so seriously: they check things like brake pad wear, possible cracks and other details that become important when you are asking a bike to survive 200 kilometres and 7,000 metres of climbing. In truth, these things are aspects that we all need to pay more attention to when riding into the mountains.

I managed a short nap during the afternoon and then slept around four hours before the race. For an event like this, the important rest happens in the days before because you probably won’t get much sleep on race night anyway.

Early starts for epic events

Anyway, at 3:00 AM, bright and early, I was awake and eating my special oats. And by the ungodly hour of 4:10 AM, I was already in the start area, with around 500 riders lining up for the main event. No sensible person would be awake and riding – but that’s what makes mountain bike marathon so special.

The weather forecast looked good, even though it had been raining continuously until about 30 minutes before the start. When the torches came on, we were off. My plan was to stay as controlled as possible. The first climb immediately started splitting the field, and you could already see some riders making the classic mistake of going too hard too early. It reminded me about focus and the need to stick to my plan, and I joined two guys and started ticking off the kilometres at a steady pace, following one of them on the descents because he clearly knew the lines better than I did.

A huge part of the course runs on incredibly smooth forest roads, which sounds easy but is actually quite dangerous from a pacing perspective. They make you want to ride very fast and can tire you out much more than you expect. It’s these elements that you really need to be disciplined when riding. Then, when the course suddenly changes and throws you onto a technical trail, you have to change your rhythm and concentration instantly.

Early injuries to test my willpower

That is exactly what happened to me around kilometre 40. After about 30 minutes of flying down forest roads, I entered a technical, rocky section, my front wheel locked up and I went over the bars, landing face-first into the rocks and my handlebars. I saw a white flash, then a lot of blood on my clothes and legs. The left brake lever moved inwards, and that’s how I rode for the rest of the race.

When I reached the first support point where Teodora was waiting, she didn’t tell me just how bad my face looked. I left the small backpack I had started with and continued. I didn’t feel any major problems, although every time I ate or drank my face burned badly and the bleeding would start again from time to time. I think half of the official race photos have me riding around with blood all over my mouth. And yes, the crash definitely affected me on the next few descents; but as long as I could pedal, I decided that everything was fine. Living and working in the mountains, I know that we have to be tough at times – and this was one such time.

By kilometre 95, everything was still more or less on schedule. We were around halfway through both the distance and the elevation, and I picked up my small backpack again for the next 40 kilometres. This was also where the longer course merged with some of the shorter races, creating a bit of chaos and causing me to lose the group I had been riding with. The next 20 kilometres alone were much harder than they looked on the profile. Actually, that became one of the main lessons of the race: many sections were considerably harder in reality than they looked on the graph.

Then came around 30 kilometres of flatter riding, where I joined a group from one of the shorter races. It wasn’t exactly the pace I wanted, but riding with a group was better than doing it alone. I reached kilometre 140 with an average speed of around 20 km/h and started getting a little disappointed. The hardest climbs were still ahead, and I was convinced my pace would only get worse. Nutrition had worked almost perfectly for the first seven hours: around 120 grams of carbohydrates per hour. Then, little by little, I couldn’t take that much anymore, so I dropped to around 80 grams per hour, and during the final hour and a half I managed only one gel. Before the penultimate climb, I finally got rid of the backpack and mentally prepared myself for the suffering.

I knew this climb because I had ridden it three days earlier. It was brutal, with steep sections coming after many hours already spent on the bike, and my knees were beginning to give up. Somehow, though, I managed to maintain a surprisingly decent pace. I descended into the opposite valley and found Teodora waiting with a very welcome Coke. I had been racing for eight and a half hours and was around kilometre 160, so I told her I wasn’t going to make my ten-hour target. There were still 40 kilometres and another 1,000 metres of elevation to go.
And then something strange happened…

Almost inexplicably, I rode the final big climb at the highest pace of the entire race. Pushing around 320 watts after nine hours was an incredible experience and probably one of the best fights with myself, I’ve ever had on a bike. It was a truly unique and strange moment – but welcomed by me.

The final descent brought another surprise: the sky opened up. Cold rain, hail, almost zero visibility, and we were still flying down a forest road. I started counting the kilometres, just wanting to get back into the valley where I could see the sun again. The final ten kilometres became a time trial when I realised I might still be able to make my original target. I didn’t know the finish very well and thought the last five kilometres would be mostly asphalt, but instead the course sent us back onto trails around the finish area. That cost me a few minutes, and I eventually crossed the line seven minutes outside my original ten-hour target.

I didn’t get much time to celebrate because I had to go to hospital for some checks. Thankfully, nothing serious — just three nasty cuts on the inside of my lip that needed stitches. So instead of the burger and fries I had been dreaming about, I got a week of soup.

Was ten hours ever realistic?

Honestly, I had set the target without thinking about it too much. I wanted to raise the bar, but I wasn’t convinced I could actually do it, especially since I had never experienced how my body would react to such a long effort. And, in the end, I finished 16th overall. At one point I was even riding in the group fighting for the top ten, but for that level I still have a bit more bread to eat. The race itself is absolutely brutal. At some point I started thinking the organisers must have been laughing at us.

“You want to pedal? Fine. Here you go.”

When they designed the course, I imagine the conversation was something like: “Where should we take them?” — “Everywhere.”

And they really did. Forest roads, village roads, technical trails, buildings, lakes — at some point I genuinely felt like I had been riding for at least two days.

Racing with support

I also think it is extremely difficult to achieve a really fast time here without support. Pretty much everyone in the top 30 had someone helping them, with bottles and gels waiting at different points. Even though the race has aid stations roughly every ten kilometres, having someone hand you exactly what you need is incredibly valuable because you don’t have to carry so much with you. I started with a small backpack for the first two hours because I wasn’t sure exactly how Teodora would manage to get from one support point to another and didn’t want to take any chances. Officially, the rules are quite clear: outside assistance is allowed only in designated areas and cars are not allowed on certain sections of the course.

In practice, things are a little more relaxed. You don’t necessarily have to be exactly inside the designated area to receive support, especially because it isn’t always possible to reach every section by car. The same goes for the car restrictions: sometimes there simply isn’t another way to get somewhere, and nobody seems particularly bothered by it.

The race admin and organisation

The organisation is impressive when you look at the scale of it: around 1,000 volunteers spread across 200 kilometres, plus hundreds of spectators along the course. Putting this together is truly impressive and helps to make this a world-class event and worth travelling for.

The course itself isn’t heavily marked by Romanian standards. The organisers mainly use arrows and X signs at the major intersections, while smaller junctions are often completely unmarked. And yet, I didn’t see anyone getting lost. Everyone had the GPS track and everyone was paying attention. If we had a course marked like this back home, I suspect 70% of the field would get lost! Note for riders reading this: learn map and compass navigation!

I’ve said many times that mountain bike marathon racing is also about being able to read the terrain and understand where you are going, and I hope we eventually reach this level of experience at home. The public roads aren’t closed, and some aren’t even restricted, but the locals know about the race. They stop immediately when they see riders coming, check before leaving their driveways and give riders priority, while tourists sometimes find themselves completely stuck when a hundred cyclists suddenly come through.

I think I saw only two police crews during the entire race. In Romania, something like this would probably generate plenty of complaints, but we simply don’t have the same sporting culture yet, so I understand why things work differently here.

And it’s not like we can’t organise races well ourselves. We can. The difference is the customer.

The part nobody sees

The thoughts and emotions during a race like this are probably the hardest thing to explain. There were long moments when there was almost nothing in my head except rhythm: pedal, breathe, eat, drink, repeat. The thoughts became much louder during the moments of weakness, but I always knew someone I cared about was waiting for me at the next support point. I also knew that the longer I stayed out there, the harder it would be to recover, so the only option was to keep moving and finish as quickly as possible.

I don’t even know if this was my best result, but I know it was my hardest effort, especially considering the crash at kilometre 40. What I do know for sure is that this was the hardest race I’ve ever done.

And, having now competed in the race, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

Seriously. The smaller races are more than enough. Now, if you are like me, you’ll probably take on the challenge anyway!

Finding cycling locations for adventure

Recent news articles have shown that those previously welcoming Spanish islands are no longer welcoming – in fact, that’s an understatement. Protests are now frequent, and the local transport services are frankly fed up with cyclists all over the road, blocking local traffic from free passage. Ultimately, they have a valid point. There are too many visitors on two wheels,all seeking fase fame. Rather than finding peace and tranquility in the mountains, it can be like cycling around Trafalgar Square in London – and that is no fun at all.

With this in the background to any cycling holiday you plan, the question then arises: where should I go? It can be difficut to decide, but fear not. Our riders search out amazing locations so that you don’t have to. They also live in amazing places, and get to ride some epic routes whenever they like. For instance, I’m lucky enough to live on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and a short ride from the North Yorks Moors National Park, or the Howardian Hills – each as spectacular as anywhere abroad, and all challenging. There are some 2 hour rides I can take when I see only a handful of cars as I pass through picture-postcard villages that look like film sets. And, if I plan correctly, I can ride all day and see very fewcars or people, weaving along winding country roads, and descending ribboned roads that fall magically across the sublime landscape.

Cafe stops for cyclists who love cake

One of the great things about riding here in North Yorkshire are the cafe stops. The baking is unrivalled, and the choice of teas and coffees is also superb. They’ve been catering for tourists for a long time, and they know exactly haow to refill and replenish those carbs.

Whether you choose the famed ‘Cafe in the Square’ at rural Masham, or the Leadout Cycling Clubhouse cafe at Bedale, you can guarentee that the refreshments will be worth a future visit. Fundamentally too, cycling should be about taking the time to relax with friends over coffee and cake, and shre those epic riding moments. Creating memories is far more important than collecting Strava kudos.

When I’m overseas, I also have favourite cafe stops. Lumos in Sibiu, Transylvania is amazing, nestled in the centre of this historic World Heritage Site city centre – a living musuem that burns into your heart and soul. Their toasted snacks and salads are to die for – following which you can cycle out to Paltinis with the Carpathian Mountains rising beside you. Or alternatively, ride out to one of the nearby villages, with Saxon history all around you – fortified churches, cottages and cobbles. And, if you visit Sibiu in July, you also get to see their world famous FITS Arts Festival – second globally to the famed Edinburgh Festival – but for me, Sibiu FITS is far better. There’s also the chance to cycle up the famed Transfagarasan Road in a closed road sportive event.

Jeremy Clarkson rightly called this ‘the best road in the world’, and having cycledit twice, I have to agree.

Cycling some of the best roads & trails in Europe

If Sibiu and Transylvania isn’t yet on your radar, then give your head a shake. Likewise, Sibiu has an international airport, with direct flights from London, Munich, Madrid, Milan, Vienna and Rome, it’s even more accessible. Once here, you can stay in 4 star quality hotels, such as my own favourite, The Art Hotel in Sibiu’s old town, walking distance from everything, and with a pedestrianised city centre allowing you soak up the myriad of historic buildings. You can then plan your cycling or take on a guide, such as Alex for: road,mtb or gravel.

Barcelona Makes History while Pogačar Wins Hearts

For the first time in Tour de France history, the world’s biggest cycling race started in Barcelona, Spain — and what a way to begin the 2026 edition. For three unforgettable days, the vibrant and culturally rich Catalan capital became the centre of the cycling world, welcoming riders and fans with incredible energy, packed streets and a backdrop unlike anywhere else on the Tour calendar. Catalonia lit up the scene, and the greatest cycling event in the world became a festival of sport and Catalan culture.

Celebrations began with the official team presentation in front of the iconic Gaudi Cathedral of Sagrada Família, before the peloton rolled out for an exciting opening weekend that showcased Barcelona at its very best. Being in the heart of this activity was exciting, nerve racking and emotional, all rolled into one – an experience of a lifetime that will stay will me forever. And, as the cycling began, riders passed some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, from the Mediterranean waterfront and Passeig de Gràcia to Gaudí’s architectural masterpieces, before tackling the legendary climb to Montjuïc.

Yes, the combination of world-class racing, historic scenery and passionate fans created an atmosphere that felt more like a festival than the opening of a three-week cycling Grand Tour.

A Catalonia cycling festival in Barcelona

With only three days to capture as much as I could, I set about maximising my time – which included leading out the Q36.5 team and Tom Pidcock! Then, the opening team time trial immediately delivered drama. Team Visma | Lease a Bike executed a near-perfect ride, placing Jonas Vingegaard into the first yellow jersey of the race. A marker had been placed early, and I was there to capture it all. The new team time trial format, where riders received individual times depending on when they crossed the finish line, added another tactical dimension and rewarded both teamwork and individual strength. It was an exciting way to launch the Tour and set the tone for what would ultimately become another memorable edition.

But while Barcelona provided the perfect stage, the real story of this Tour was once again Tadej Pogačar. We’ve become used to watching the Slovenian do extraordinary things on a bike. His accelerations in the mountains almost seem effortless, his descending is fearless, and his race instinct is second to none. Yet what stood out even more this July wasn’t simply another overall victory — it was the way he raced. His whole attitude, demeanour and activity.

One of the defining moments came on Stage 2. Isaac Del Toro, UAE Team Emirates-XRG’s young Mexican star, attacked on the final climb to Montjuïc with Pogačar glued to his wheel. Most riders chasing a fifth Tour title would instinctively sprint for every possible victory. This time, Pogačar did the opposite. He sat up, celebrated with his teammate and allowed Del Toro to take the biggest win of his young career. After all, winning a Grand Tour requires teamwork, and Del Toro would repay this in spades as the tour progressed towards Paris.

And, that single moment perfectly summed up why Pogačar has become one of the most respected riders in professional cycling. He wins often, yes; but he never forgets the people around him – about the team. Throughout the Tour he consistently praised his teammates, acknowledged the work they did to protect him and made it clear that success belongs to the entire team — not simply to the rider wearing yellow.

Stage by stage,history is written

Later in the race, when Del Toro was battling illness while fighting for the white jersey and a podium place, Pogačar again put the team first. Rather than chasing another stage victory for himself, he helped his young teammate defend his position. Those gestures rarely appear in the final results sheet, but they say far more about a champion than another statistic ever could. Watching this close up, I was able to see the bonds that riders had and how teams interacted – it was enlightening and yes, kind of emotional. For three weeks they are a close-knit family, sharing raw emotions. In Barcelona, the smiles were of course evident. However, once the racing began, we can never see all that takes place behind the scenes pre-race and post-race. We can only watch in awe and soak it all up… and I did.

Of course, the racing itself delivered everything fans could hope for. The battle between Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard looked set to produce another thrilling chapter before Vingegaard’s Tour dramatically and unfortunately ended prematurely, following a crash. Remco Evenepoel then stepped up and into the void, to become Pogačar’s closest challenger, while the mountains once again belonged to the Slovenian. His breathtaking climbing performances — including a record ascent of Alpe d’Huez — underlined exactly why he continues to set the standard in modern cycling.

By the time the peloton reached Paris, with thousands of kilometres in the legs and hearts filled with emotions, Pogačar had secured his fifth Tour de France title, further cementing his place among the greatest riders the sport has ever seen. But statistics alone don’t explain why this Tour felt so special.

Celebrating cycling and its global family

The 2026 edition reminded us what makes cycling unique. It delivered unforgettable racing, stunning scenery and incredible crowds from Barcelona to Paris, but it also highlighted the values that make the sport so compelling: teamwork, respect and humility. Yes, I had witness history, and I had been fortunate to be at Barcelona and at Paris. I had been a part of events at Barcelona close-up, and I had talked with riders, with their support crews and with others. I had immersed myself totally in this unique and quite wonderful race, and I had loved every moment of it.

Barcelona had made history, by hosting the Tour de France for the first time, giving global cycling fans an opening weekend they will remember for years to come. And Pogačar had reminded us that the greatest champions are defined not only by how often they win, but by how they treat the people around them. Sometimes you see, the biggest victory isn’t crossing the finish line first. Sometimes, it’s earning the respect of the entire peloton — and in that regard, Tadej Pogačar may already be in a league of his own. Is he the greatest of all time – who can say. He is up there now, with the likes of Hinault, Induráin and Merckx. He has beaten times set by the great climbers such as Pantani, and he continues to ride into our hearts, challenging everything set before him.

The 2026 Tour de France may be concluded, but it still lives. It built on that unmistakeable global cycling community feeling and camaraderie that is cycling, and it showed me why cycling is so special. As Pogačar and Van der Poel raced through the cobbled streets of Montmartre, they weren’t just riding through the suburb of artists, they were painting history itself, and it was magical in its brilliance!

Cycling in the testing summer heat of Barcelona

All over Europe there’s been a heat wave this summer, and it’s been critical that cyclists get the kit choices right. In many respects Barcelona in the middle of summer is one of the best places to test cycling apparel. Hot climbs, humid mornings and long hours in the saddle quickly reveal whether a kit truly performs or not. The sun in northern Spain does not take prisoners. It burns down on you, and the fabrics have to be protective in many ways – especially with UV protection and the ability to let air flow. Over the past few weeks, I have been testing the latest offerings for women cyclists from stylish Italian brand, ALÉ. Based in Verona in the north of Italy, ALÉ supply kit at World Tour level, and so have the right environment for knowing how well their kit works. I tested the ALÉ Sprinter 2.0 jersey, ALE Voltage bib shorts, and the ALE Focus Tri Suit. Here are my thoughts.

ALE Voltage Bib Shorts

The ALÉ Voltage bib shorts were probably the biggest surprise. The first thing I noticed was the raw-cut leg finish. They stay securely in place without digging into your thighs, so there’s none of that uncomfortable “sausage leg” effect that some bib shorts create. It seems a small point, but it’s not. raw-cut legs are super fitting and super comfortable on bibs – if brands get it right. The material also has to be strong and high-quality multi-directional too, so that it wraps you properly and stays in place.

Thankfully, ALÉ know all of this, and the Voltage bib shorts are made from high-quality fabrics, providing excellent supportive compression without feeling restrictive, while the lightweight bib straps and upper almost disappear once you’re riding. Bib straps are a key point and often overlooked. High-performance brands will use strong and flat elasticated weave straps that sit flat and stay unobtrusive and comfortable across the shoulders – as these bibs do.

They’re also designed with minimal seams, for an anatomically optimized fit, and that all-important sun protection too. The new Air Fix Snake fabric applied between the legs by ALÉ also ensures better adherence to the saddle for consistent power, whilst also looking kind of stylish. For me though, the chamois deserves special mention. I tested it on five-hour rides, including Barcelona’s fast 4 Chillies group ride, and it remained comfortable from start to finish. That’s no mean feat in the Barcelona heat on climbs. No pressure points, no discomfort—exactly what you want when spending hours in the saddle.

White bib shorts aren’t just stylish—they’re practical for summer too, reflecting the sun better than darker colours. Combined with the refined and anatomical fit, they quickly became my favourite bibs for hot days. It’s a thumbs up for the ALÉ Voltage bibs!

ALÉ Sprinter 2.0 Jersey

The new ALÉ Sprinter 2.0 jersey quickly became my go-to jersey for Barcelona’s summer heat. Alongside the Voltage bibs, I wore it on long rides – both solo and in fast group rides – and it handled the heat exceptionally well. Even during numerous long climbs, it stayed breathable and dried quickly, so I never felt weighed down by sweat.

The cut and fit, and the multidirectional fabrics used, feels like a true second skin without being restrictive. One of my favourite details is the ribbed aero fabric on the sleeves, which gives the jersey a premium race-inspired look while adding a subtle aerodynamic touch. The raw-cut sleeves are stylish and extremely well thought out and finished, and sit comfortably against the arms without squeezing, while the mesh style fabric side panels provide good extra ventilation.

The dropped rear hem keeps the jersey perfectly in place, and the three rear pockets easily carry everything needed for longer rides – viola. All on point so far.
In terms of the styling and colour, the berry colour is one of my favourite parts of the jersey. It’s bright, fresh and highly visible on the road, while pairing beautifully with the white bib shorts for a clean summer look. The finish and quality of fabrics and zips from ALÉ is always good, and this jersey proved that again to me. Overall, it has that unmistakable Italian class. Premium fabrics, elegant tailoring and thoughtful details remind you that Italians know fashion just as well as they know cycling.

ALÉ Focus Tri Suit (used as a cycling skinsuit)

Although the ALÉ Focus is designed as a triathlon suit, I chose to wear it as a cycling skinsuit for fast group rides. It makes sense at my level of riding, and is comfortable on those testing rides.

The moment I zipped it up, it gave me that race-day feeling. The fit is close and supportive without feeling restrictive, and the lightweight fabric remained comfortable even in Barcelona’s summer temperatures. The ribbed sleeve fabric adds to the aerodynamic feel, while the raw-cut sleeves stay perfectly in place throughout the ride.

Because it’s a tri suit, the chamois is naturally thinner than a dedicated cycling bib, but for high-intensity rides that’s exactly what you’d expect. The full-length front zipper also makes it easy to adjust ventilation, while the rear pockets comfortably carry ride essentials. I received several compliments while wearing it on fast group rides – and that’s always a good sign when testing clothing. Beyond the performance, it simply looks fast – fast and stylish, what we want. Every time I put it on, I felt like I was lining up for a race.

Verdict

What impressed me most with the ALÉ women’s summer kit options has been the balance between performance, comfort and style. The Sprinter 2.0 jersey and Voltage bib shorts proved themselves on the most testing rides – those long, hot summer rides. And, the ALÉ Focus Tri Suit became my ‘go to’ choice of cycle clothing whenever I wanted a more aerodynamic, race-focused feel. There is no higher recommendation, I guess.

Once again, ALÉ has managed to combine premium technical fabrics with unmistakable Italian style, giving all cyclists the same level of quality and performance afforded to their supported world tour teams. The result is women’s cycling apparel that performs on the bike while looking elegant off it — a combination that’s harder to find than you might think.

Madeira Mountain Biking – Like Nowhere Else on Earth

There are beautiful places in this world—and then there is Madeira

I first visited the island three years ago, with no expectations beyond simple curiosity. But from the moment I arrived, I knew this place was different. Some destinations impress you; others stay with you. Madeira did both. It sits now within me, as one of those places that we instinctively know that we will always return to. And, I left knowing one thing for certain: I had to return, and next time, I had to bring a bike.

What I didn’t realize then was that Madeira is considered by many to be one of the very best mountain biking destinations not only in Europe, but in the world. Riding in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania, and elsewhere in Central and Eastern Europe, I’d been busy as a semi-pro rider, and I simply hadn’t realised that growth in trail riding on the Island. Anyway, a year later, I returned to support someone close to me racing MIUT, one of the most spectacular mountain ultra races on the planet. During that trip, I rented an MTB and got my first real taste of the island’s trails and it simply confirmed what I already felt.

Travelling for mountain bike adventures

Despite being fortunate enough to ride in world-class destinations such as the Canary Islands, Costa Brava, Costa Blanca, Andalusia, Liguria, Antalya, Cyprus, and Sicily, my thoughts kept drifting back to Madeira. This spring, after postponing my usual winter training camp, everything finally aligned for three full weeks of mountain biking on the island. I was excited and couldn’t wait – everything I needed awaited me. And Madeira delivered everything I had hoped for — and more. In truth, when you look at Madeira in detail, few places in the world offer such an extraordinary diversity of terrain packed into such a compact space.

Yes, from pine forests to volcanic rock, from alpine meadows to tropical jungle, from perfectly shaped trails to raw wilderness… From high mountain peaks to the ocean, it is, without exaggeration, one of the most varied riding environments I have ever experienced. But Madeira is not easy.

This is not a destination for effortless riding or casual trail cruising. The island demands respect. It demands full commitment, positivity and determination. Climbs regularly sit at 10–12%, with steeper pitches reaching 20–25%. Unless you rely entirely on shuttles, every descent must be earned. And once the climbing is over, the real work begins. Because Madeira’s descents are long — often brutally long, and often brutally technical. However, they test far more than your technical ability. They test your endurance, your concentration, and your upper body strength. It asks questions of you as an athlete. By the end of a proper descent, your arms are burning, your hands are numb, and your focus has been pushed to its limit.

The Wild North

The northern side of the island feels raw and untamed. AS a landscape, it is wetter, moodier, and less predictable, often covered by mist and sudden rain showers. Trails here are fewer, but they hide some of the island’s most breathtaking scenery. Riding in the north feels more exploratory—less polished, more adventurous. It’s a place that rewards curiosity. Take your bike and see where the wheels roll and take it all in – you won’t be disappointed.

The Southwest Playground

For pure trail riding, the southwest is Madeira’s mountain bike hub. Starting from the small village of Prazeres, riders climb on smooth asphalt before gaining access to a dense network of descending options in nearly every direction. This area offers everything from flowing blue trails to steep, technical black descents, all spread across one of the island’s rare plateau-like landscapes.

Estaca – My Favorite Trail in Madeira

Further inland, near Funchal Ecological Park and Funchal Alta, lies my personal highlight of the trip: Estaca.

It begins high above the island, among barren volcanic rock and exposed alpine terrain. From there, the trail follows ridgelines before diving into pine forest, then into thick jungle, changing character constantly as you descend. It feels less like riding one trail and more like riding through multiple ecosystems in a single run; and it ends with a long, flowing finish that carries you almost all the way into town.

Riding Above the Atlantic

Toward the east of the island, the terrain opens into another unforgettable zone around Machico and Porto da Cruz. And here you’ll find one of the most dramatic trails anywhere in the world: Boca do Risco / Vereda do Larano, a narrow ribbon of trail cut into steep cliffs above the Atlantic Ocean. There is space for one bike – no more. And it is absolutely not the place to make mistakes. It asks even deeper questions of you, physically and mentally. Your focus and concentration are however rewarded.

Finally, if you keep heading farther east, to Ponta de Sao Laorenco, the landscape gradually transforms until you reach the driest, most desert-like part of the island.

Built for Riders

One of Madeira’s biggest strengths is how rider-friendly the island has become. Nearly every trail is mapped on TrailForks, most entrances are clearly signposted, and many trails are linked together through logical connecting roads and transitions.

The infrastructure makes exploring easy while still preserving the island’s wild feel. Getting to Madeira is also easy, and they’ve been catering for tourists for a very long time. Everything you need is accessible on the island.

Final assessment

Madeira is not just another riding destination. It is a place where every ride feels bigger, steeper, longer, and more dramatic than expected. It is physically demanding. Technically rewarding. Visually overwhelming. And once you ride here, it’s hard not to compare every other destination against it. In many respects, Madeira can easily be called one of the true homes of mountain biking. And if you are searching for the ultimate riding escape during the colder months, few places come close. Take my word for it and book yourself a Madeira mountain biking adventure!

Thoughts on being a MAMIL

Standing out from the crowd for the right reasons

In September last year I turned 60 years of age. Some people will say ‘Wow, that’s old!’ In truth it’s not, as I hope to live and to be active for quite a long time. Yes, my hair is grey, and ironically that’s not simply an age issue, it’s genetic. I went grey quite early in life – probably sent grey by the number of idiots I’ve had to put up with throughout my life. I can however still run a cross country course or middle distance track event faster than many people a lot younger than myself. When people look at you as middle aged, they don’t see the person who has entered and won many events as a younger man. They don’t see the free climber and mountaineer. They don’t see the mountain runner, the hiker, or the person who has survived untold elements of the pain barrier that would make most people quit far earlier. There are aspects of what I have done and achieved in life that are private to me and my family, and I remain proud of them and the challenge they gave to me… quietly.

I’ve also shed tears over the loss of young friends; some killed in road traffic accidents whilst teenagers, some dying in their twenties, and too many dying since then. So don’t wince at age, nor mock it, because it’s a privilege that I wish I’d been able to share with some truly wonderful people, including my older brother, whom I am now older than at his death. Yes, hearing those endless ‘age related’ comments does really piss me off, whilst I’m still quietly reassured that I have at least reached 60 in a reasonably healthy state, and I know what I will look like at 60 – and it’s not to shabby. Many of you have still to achieve this milestone, and you have very little idea on how the years will be kind to you – or otherwise. Based on a lot of what I see – good luck with that one! Few have earned my respect.

Age is a privilege

A former colleague bumped into me a while ago and said, ‘Oh, you’re very grey haired now!’ Without going into detail, they didn’t – and have never done so – look the healthiest of people, and were not aesthetically outstanding in any way – except maybe at Halloween. Instead of commenting on the ignorance, their ugliness and many other features that society ought to be protected from, I simply nodded and smiled… and then vowed to ignore them for the many years that I hopefully have left.

You may be asking what this has to do with cycling, and that is a reasonable question. In truth, it’s quite simple: I represent that happy and financially secure demographic who can go out and buy cycling products, buy expensive bikes and travel to far flung places without worrying too much about the costs. After all, according to many of you out there, I’m old and probably smell of cabbage. And so, I may as well spend my money whilst I have the opportunity! However, cycling brands are generally too ignorant to realise that whilst they’ve been declaring bankruptcy faster than Donald Trump can fill a nappy, they’ve also been targeting the wrong demographics – we have money, you dingbats! Stop pissing us off!

It’s my demographic – and my wife – who actually have the means and funds to buy the products that you can’t shift because you’re targeting the wrong audience. Yes, I’m 60 years, but my physiology still says – according to medical experts – that I’m an athlete, albeit older in years. I have my mental faculties and I am still able to walk unaided to the cafe. My hair is grey, but my skin is smooth, as I have hardly ever drunk alcohol, genetics were kind to me, and I have never used soap or layers of makeup to block up my skin pores. My clothing still fits from years ago, and I don’t look like apregnant man about to give birth. So why the heck –I had to press pause and think about which word to use, because ‘why the fuck’ would have been so much more appropriate – do cycling brands too frequently focus on so called influencers who have little in common with me… or in common with anyone within the real world, and who quite frankly only influence me to switch over and ignore them? It’s a simple question, and I am willing to wait whilst you form a reasonable answer. The cycling industry wastes millions chasing a small percentage who have no loyalty and who rarely have the funds to buy the products – and they call it business! I despair at such stupidity.

Looking good in lycra at 60 – the challenge

My wife – God bless her – says that I still look good in lycra, and I ride frequently. If she says otherwise, I will wear something else. There are too many non-athletes abusing other people’s eyes with sports clothing worn in the wrong context. I have been with this amazing women since our teens, and her opinion matters – not marketeers from brands that constantly fail to achieve anything meaningful. Good luck selling through the online clothes horses!

Personally, I know for sure that I can still outrun many people half my age – I did so prior to leaving my previous career in policing. On a 3 mile run for trainees, I was asked if I’d like to join in. I did and came third, and only lacking the sprint I had in my youth for first place! Years ago, I would have rightly been sent out to run it again, had a 51 year old with an office job beaten me aged 25! I still go jogging occasionally with my 25 year old son, and he doesn’t have to wait for me… too long.

Yes, you see, I am a Mamil, and I am grey haired, and I do cycle more slowly now – even though I know that I could train harder and ride harder. However, I now love simply taking to the bike and knowing that I have time to relax and to take in the beautiful scenery of North Yorkshire. I have time to relax and talk with friends, and more importantly I have absolutely nothing to prove to anyone or to myself. I am living a life in honour of those friends who died too young, – who I cycled with, rock climbed with, played badminton and tennis with, and who I hiked to to the top of mountains with. I am living the life that they didn’t get the opportunity to live, so don’t ever treat age as anything other than a celebration of life. Loss over many years and the witnessing of tragedies makes you far more reefelctive on life. These days, I still hike and ride with these friends – quietly in my mind, because I’ve earned the right to say that the world is chaotic, selfish and filled with ignorance and bullshit.

As I write this, I’m looking out of my window at grey skies. However, to me that simply means that I will have a cool and refreshing ride. I don’t need the sun to shine for any images I may take, where I might have to pout, stick my arse out, or stretch my arm out front whilst my head faces down, or try to look serious, staring inanely upwards and end up just looking constipated – and that’s just the men on social media!

I refuse to sell my soul to the devil, and I refuse to buy from brands who are solely focused on a demographic who own nothing but credit card debt and a too large ego. One thing about being a writer is an adherence to truth and honesty – something, along with integrity, that is sadly lacking these days. I refuse to entertain any brand that stops recognising the value of my close friend when she became a mom, even though she is still an exceptional athlete, an exceptional content creator and human being,– more beautifil inside than her outward aesthetic beauty, which is in itself sublime. Why, because as a mom, riding occasionally with her daughter on the bike too, she no longer fitted the image that the brands wanted to portray. Brands seeking to replicate the mannequins that watch down on the Hunger Games, and share the same selfish traits.

I value parenting & self-respect, not Strava segments

I refuse to give airtime or webspace here at Pedalnorth to brands who believe that their bank balance and ability to pay aimless looking statues is more important that the quality of their product, or the quality of their interactions with all cyclists – whatever their age, their gender or their role as a parent, and specifically as a mom.

And on this subject, I’ll leave you with a thought and a few searching questions: What will you be like at 60 and how will your life be defined? What would you be like as a parent? Would you dedicate yourself to your family or continue to be a selfish and self-centered preener, needing surgery as you get older, due to the number and frequency of the utterly ridiculous poses you’ve thrown online as you seek life as a Z lister on some social media channel that continues to ignore the fact that those who actually have a disposable income are completely fed up with how they’re being treated.

I know these answers and I’m proud of who I am, who I’ve been, of my moral and ethical compass and of my health and fitness. And, I’m proud of the the people I now live my life in memory of. I’m proud too of my cycling friend in Flanders, who dedicates herself to parenthod of two children now. And, likewise I’m proud of my numerous middle aged and parenting friends living on the Cote D’Azure, who I believe have achieved so much in life as human beings with good altruistic hearts. Their absence from cycling media is a loss that brands will never understand as long as the arses of ignorant marketing people point south! Yes, I’m a MAMIL, and I’m generally a quietly spoken person; but never confuse that quietness or politeness with ignorance or weakness.

Try thinking that I and those like me have been already journeyed through those painful epochs of life and have survived intact. Yes, I am a middle aged man/ person in lycra and I am so fucking proud to be able to say that!

I also know that in the higher hills, the temperatures can dip to around 10 degrees or colder in summer, and especially so in autumn. And, with autumn now on the horizon, You need the right cycle clothing to prepare you.

I’ve been a fan of GripGrab for many years. Here at Pedalnorth, we were probably one of the first publications to spot what they were doing, with their world-leading accessories. Then we watched as the guys turned their expertise to cycling jerseys, jackets and bibs with the same level of care and detail. Their latest kit is testament to their quality and both stylish and functional in just the right way.

First Impression – Clean Design, Functional Fit

The people at GripGrab don’t go for unnecessary design and gimmicks. GripGrab follows a very clean and minimal design approach, but what stands out more is the fit. All pieces feel purpose-built for riding, with no unnecessary bulk or distractions. They use a body mapping process, meaning that the fit is performance-oriented but not overly aggressive, which makes it suitable for long endurance sessions without compromising comfort.

Fabric quality makes for fun rides

How did I find it: unbelievably comfortable, with the PACR long sleeved jersey soon becoming my go-to colder ride choice in spring and on those colder summer days. It fits exactly as it should and has easy movement, with the excellent multi-directional stretch fabrics. It’s not too thick or too warm – it’s actually just right and feels soft against the skin. As my colleague and fellow tester, Kristi says: ‘Ultimately, if it’s comfortable and functional, then I feel better and I’ll perform better. Do GripGrab achieve this – yes, I think that they do.’

Small points matter and GripGrab do these very well. They use high-quality, high-performance fabrics and they finish things off with a quality that is second to none. The wide and comfortable straps on the bib shorts simply sit nicely against the legs and the compression feels about right. If I had one point to make, I’d probably like a bit more weight to the bib shorts fabric, but that’s just a personal choice. The fit is excellent and the pad is high-quality too. And, my pet hate – the bib straps – are as good as you’ll find elsewhere at this level.

Overall, GripGrab have used their experience working with world tour riders, and the latest PACR products use a variety of technical fabrics in the right areas, all with the aim of keeping you comfortable all ride long.

Jackets and Jerseys deigned for rider comfort

On the long sleeved and the short-sleeved jackets, the zips work well and are strong, and the pockets are strong and easy to reach, with a good quality zip on the security pocket. Small points matter with cycling kit, far more than loud aesthetics. What was really impressive was the mesh sleeves and fabric used for the arms and the side panels on the PACR short sleeved jersey. This makes a world of difference to comfort on warm days. And, like its long -sleeved sibling, the PACR short sleeved jersey is body mapped and fits like a second skin. Both jerseys also benefit from high-quality hems at the waist – which for me is another area than too many brands get wrong with an after-thought approach. Not so for GribGrab.

One particular favourite for me has been the GripGrab PACR Windproof Lightweight Vest. Ironically, it’s an item of kit that I don’t usually use or find that comfortable. However, this one from GripGrab has not only changed my perspective, it’s become a regular go-to choice of cycling clothing for me.

Featuring a windproof front panel made from premium Japanese windproof fabric, this vest genuinely works in providing that necessary shield from those cold winds and icy descending on cool windy days. The fabric is also treated with a PFC-free Durable Water Repellent (DWR) treatment – so it will shrug off light showers and front wheel spray. And, living here in the Yorkshire Dales, this has been tested several times – all thankfully positive! The open mesh back panel on the gilet allows moisture and heat to escape from within – so even as you work hard, you don’t build up a chill-inducing sweat. An elasticated lower hem with silicone gripper dots on the back of the gilet keeps everything securely in place as you battle into those headwinds.

I really do like the two-way YKK® Vision zip on the front of the gilet, which allows you to unzip from the top and allow airflow through your layers, or unzip from the bottom to allow for easier access to your jersey pockets beneath. It’s a small but important point, and one that makes this GripGrab Gilet stand out from the crowd.

Men’s PACR Bib Shorts

Bib shorts can so often be a poor example of a brands attitude towards cyclists. They often relfect last minute choices, and are simply not well thought out or comfortable. These PACR shorts from GripGrab however, have several points that I look for and they do it well:

strong mesh uppers to keep you cool and that sit well against the body
high quality and strong, wide staps that sit flat and softly,and importantly don’t move or show poorly under a jersey
laser cut legs with wide silicon gripping that sits against the leg and keeps things in place
multi panel body-mapped design to ensure a good fit
multi -directional and strong fabrics that move with your body
high-quality pad that performs on intermediate and hilly routes and keeps you comfortable – and dry in summer!

The PACR Bib Shorts combined with cool summer days leg warmers also provided a surprisingly versatile setup. They offer enough warmth for cold starts, while still feeling lighter and more flexible than full winter tights. Best of all, the compression and cut means that they stay firm and stable when I ride – like a second skin, allowing you to focus on the ride, without that annoying slippage that often happens with other brands. One area I will mention though, is that on the leg panels themselves, I’d prefer a heavier compression material – but that’s just a personal choice. The multi-panel design ensures a soft second-skin fit that feels comfortable all day long.

On the Bike – Comfort and Stability

During longer rides (2–4 hours), the key factors for me were:

• Stability of the fit – no shifting or adjustment needed
• Breathability – no excessive overheating even during harder efforts
• Freedom of movement – unbelievable, and like a second skin feel, without being too close.

GribGrab work closely with World Tour riders, and this becomes evident in the comfort of their clothing. The fabric choices, the technicity and the design and fit is all superb.

Gloves – Simple, well-made and comfortable

Gloves are often an overlooked but critical element of our cycling kit. GripGrab made their name with gloves, and they still stand out today. I tested their RIDE padded fingerless gloves, with the white material. Incidentally, I liked that when I put my hand out to signal, drivers were more likely to see my hands. The GripGrab RIDE short finger cycling gloves are the successors to the ProGel gloves, and offer superior cushioning, breathability, and grip with a recycled microsuede palm and flexible back panel. How do they work in practice – well, very good actually and the palms are just about right.

• hands stayed comfortable and gloves felt a part of me
• tough and well-made of strong fabrics
• grip remained secure in both dry and damp conditions
• no loss of control or dexterity during braking and shifting

As Kristi quite rightly says in her own review: gloves should never be a secondary thought, and these from GribGrab are a good option for early spring, summer and autumn. They feel well made, from quality fabrics and are tough, and should last a long time.

Breathability vs Protection

One of the most important aspects of early and mid-season gear is balancing insulation with breathability and the changing conditions. GripGrab manages this well:

Chasing a Rainbow Through Serbia

My Road to Gran Fondo Novi Sad

The decision was made during a training ride in the hills above Barcelona. I had been putting in long hours on the bike and accumulating kilometres week after week. But something was missing. I wanted a goal. Something to look forward to. Something that would push me beyond simply training for the sake of training. It had been several years since I had lined up for a major international race, and I wanted to test myself again. More importantly, I wanted the chance to qualify for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships.

That evening at home, doing that internet search that we cyclists frequently explore, and with me still thinking about the ride, I found myself scrolling through the UCI Gran Fondo World Series calendar. One event caught my attention: Novi Sad, Serbia. Yes, I know that it still conjures up particular images for many people – and those events were so real that it’s understandable – but this country in the heart of Central Europe and the Balkans has a longer history than those events of the late 20th century, and Serbia had been on my travel bucket list for years.

Like many people, when I thought about the country, I thought about Belgrade—the capital, the history, the culture and the energy that these days draws visitors from across Europe for the right reasons. Novi Sad, however, was a place I knew almost nothing about. I had never visited, never researched it, and honestly hadn’t given it much thought before seeing its name on the race calendar. However, only a few clicks late and I was registered.

The attraction of challenging yourself

The attraction wasn’t just another Gran Fondo. It was the possibility of something bigger. Like every event in the UCI Gran Fondo World Series, Novi Sad offered qualification for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships. Finish in the top 25% of your age group and the reward isn’t a medal or a T-shirt — it’s a ticket to race for a rainbow jersey. For amateur cyclists, that’s as close as most of us will ever get to feeling like a professional. And so, only a few weeks later, I arrived in Serbia with my bike and plenty of curiosity about what awaited me and the hope that my training had been enough.

My bike setup: Time Scylon aero bike, fitted with Particle Hyperlight 45/52 wheels, a Selle Italia saddle, and Pirelli P Zero Race SL-R tyres. It’s a setup I know intimately and trust completely when the road turns uphill, the pace rises, and every watt counts. However, I wanted to balance lightness with the necessary handling and responsiveness, and to get these elements working in harmony.

On arrival Novi Sad immediately felt different; most Gran Fondo’s are hosted in places already famous for cycling. Think Girona. Mallorca. The Dolomites. Novi Sad doesn’t need cycling to justify its existence. The city sits on the banks of the Danube between the river and the slopes of Fruška Gora National Park. It feels like a fascinating crossroads where Central Europe meets the Balkans. It’s already a tourism hotspot in this area of Europe, filled with history and culture. The evening before the race, the city centre was packed with cafés and restaurants. Nobody seemed particularly interested in watts, FTP or aero socks. It was refreshing and relaxing.

Getting ready to ride

Then race morning arrived. Suddenly the streets belonged to cyclists. The start line sits directly in front of the Provincial Government building in the heart of the city. Hundreds of riders from across Europe rolled into the start pens carrying the same nervous energy. Some were chasing qualification. Others were chasing personal goals. A few looked like they could have ridden straight into a professional peloton – and had probably recently left the pro and semi-pro ranks. There are a wealth of cyclists now sitting within this new grey area of being amateur and yet spending 24/7-365 as a cycling competitor on some form. I knew this was going to be a tough day riding.

The Gran Fondo Novi Sad route covers 107 kilometres with approximately 1,800 metres of elevation gain. Three key climbs define the race and shape the final result. As the neutralised start rolled out through the city, I found myself wondering whether I’d underestimated the race. The answer arrived 11 kilometres later. That’s where the first major climb begins. Groups exploded. Riders were dropped. The race settled into that familiar Gran Fondo rhythm: full gas, brief recovery, then full gas again. The strongest riders used the climbs to create gaps. Everyone else was trying to limit losses.

I remember looking down at my computer and seeing numbers I would have preferred not to see. I also remember looking up. Beautiful forests lined much of the course, providing welcome shade on a warm day. At other moments the road opened into wide fields and rolling countryside, with views stretching across the landscape. For a few moments I forgot I was racing. That’s rare. Most races become a blur of suffering and statistics. Novi Sad managed to remain a journey.

The second climb came around kilometre 50. Then comes the final climb and the rolling roads across the ridge of Fruška Gora, where every acceleration matters and every weakness is exposed. Then, the final kilometres back toward the city were fast and demanding. Before I could pause, it was suddenly all over. Months of training reduced to a number on a results sheet. Thankfully though, this time, the answer was a good one and I crossed the finish line as the second overall female rider and secured qualification for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships – the rainbow jersey dream would continue.

Post-race reflections

In truth, the race itself went surprisingly smoothly. The only real problem of the weekend came after the finish line – the trophy. It was enormous. Getting it back to the hotel while managing a bike and all my equipment turned out to be more complicated than any of the three climbs! Thankfully, one of the race photographers came to the rescue and helped me. The adventure continued at the airport, where I discovered the trophy was far too big for my bike bag; and so, while the bike travelled in its case, the trophy travelled with me as hand luggage.

Did I qualify for the World Championships? Absolutely, yes! But the result wasn’t the only thing I that brought home from Serbia, because the real discovery wasn’t only that I had earned a place at the Worlds, it was discovering a side of Serbia I never expected to find and which was refreshing. Everyone talks about Belgrade. Everyone talks about Girona. Everyone talks about Mallorca. Few people talk about Novi Sad. For me, after one weekend in Serbia, I suspect that this won’t remain true for long. Serbia is different these days, and it’s focusing on its culture and sublime scenery to attract cultural and sports tourists for the right reasons to this amazing place in the heart of Europe.

With roads, facilities and landscapes to rival anywhere, I believe that Novi Sad will soon be a destination choice for cyclists from all over the world. All able to share in the relaxed and warm welcome that I’d been lucky enough to experience myself, on my journey to the end of the rainbow. Where to next – who knows. What I do know though, is that there’ll be a challenge involved!

Premium Cycling Apparel That Truly Stands Out

Over the years, I’ve tested cycling clothing from many different brands. Most products are good, some are very good, but every now and then you come across something that immediately feels special. That was my experience with the GripGrab PACR Short Sleeve Jersey and PACR Bib Shorts from the Spring/Summer 2026 collection.

From the first ride, it was clear that GripGrab has put a lot of attention to detail into both comfort and performance. The fit is close and sporty, without it feeling tight or restrictive, making the kit super comfortable for both hard training sessions and long days on the bike. Clothing should wrap you like a second skin, and that’s the feeling I get wearing the new PACR collection from GripGrab. Leet’s take a brief look then…

GripGrab PACR ss Women’s Jersey

The PACR Short Sleeve Jersey is made from technical, lightweight and highly breathable materials. The design has been thought out too, with the material choice and thickness varying across the jersey and under the arms. Even on warmer rides, it helps keep you comfortable and prevents that heavy and overheated feeling that some jerseys can create. The fit wraps you perfectly, due to the multi-directional stretch and feels fast and aerodynamic, but most importantly, it just feels nice and really natural to wear.

I love the colours too, especially the purple jersey and its feminine styling.

The jersey features raglan sleeves, and has no underarm seam, a lower collar, and strong silicone grippers at the sleeve hem and the bottom hem, ensuring that it stays in place and allows great freedom of movement and ergonomic comfort. Additionally, the jersey includes three top-entry pockets and a secured zip pocket, allowing for convenient storage. For enhanced visibility, all logos are reflective. The lighter mesh style weave on the side panels is also great for helping you to stay cool and allow air to flow.

GripGrab describe the jersey as being one that ‘you can pick for race days or whenever you feel ready to turn up the pace during epic summer rides!’ For me, I simply love wearing it anytime.

PACR Women’s Bib Shorts

Bib shorts are always a tricky choice for women, for a variety of reasons. Thankfully though, the PACR Bib Shorts are equally impressive. The fabric is top quality and has the right weight and strength, providing good support and compression while still allowing complete freedom of movement. During longer rides, the bibs stay comfortably in place and continue to feel supportive hour after hour. They have UPF50+ sun protection, which is also a nice bonus for cyclists who spend a lot of time outdoors, on long summer rides.

What impressed me the most, however, was the quality of the materials. This is actually the hardest part of the review to describe. You can talk about breathability, compression, comfort, and performance, but the truth is that some things simply need to be experienced. The fabrics used in the PACR collection feel incredibly premium against the skin. They are soft, comfortable, and high quality in a way that is difficult to explain with words alone. It’s one of those products where you immediately notice the difference the moment you put it on. The only way to convey this is to say, ‘You must try them yourself, because they feel really nice!’ Simple, but true!

I also appreciate the direction GripGrab is taking as a company. They continue to improve their products while working towards more responsible manufacturing and material choices. Rather than making big promises, they focus on continuous improvement, which feels both honest and realistic.

After spending time riding in the PACR jersey and bib shorts, I came away feeling genuinely impressed. Everything feels carefully designed with cyclists in mind, from the fit and comfort to the quality of the materials.

Final Verdict

The GripGrab PACR Short Sleeve Jersey and PACR Bib Shorts are excellent choices for cyclists looking for premium comfort, performance, and quality. The fit is excellent, the fabrics feel fantastic, and the overall riding experience is exactly what you would expect from high-end cycling apparel.
