Let me be clear about this: I liked the look of Ale Cycling’s products from the very beginning. In addition to the unique design, with an aesthetic sense, the quality of the products is clearly superior to other brands. It oozes quality from first sight, and is also well finished. Yes, aesthetic elements and finishing are important to women cyclists in particular .

This cold season, I had the opportunity to test some of the latest kits from Ale Cycling, specially designed for women, for the cold periods of the year, with wind, rain and low temperatures. Here in Transylvania it gets very cold and clothing has to perform .

One of the key moments that stuck in my mind was when a light drizzle started—the kind that usually soaks regular pants in minutes . With the K-Atmo 3.0 on, I barely noticed the change; the water-repellent treatment did its job, and the fit didn’t feel tight or chafe uncomfortably even after an hour in the saddle. Ladies Cold Weather Cycle Clothing by Alé

Wrapped in style – with Alé Cycling

When Alé Cycling launched their Fall-Winter 2022/23 collection, it was designed just for these time periods. However, they made it so well, that’s it’s also perfect for early spring, which is why I’m still wearing it in Transylvania.

The range has lots of great garments: breathable, protective, comfortable cycle clothing for all weather conditions, where colours and design stands out at first sight. The style is based on art in textile engineering, to offer jerseys, bib tights, jackets, underwear, and accessories that improve the cyclist’s performance in lower temperatures – like early spring too. The theme of the new collection is “No matter the season”: an invitation to go cycling without worrying about weather conditions.

I always look forward to and like the feeling of fresh new kit to test. I get excited when opening a box with new kit! Feels like opening a present – Hehe. Well, the new kit I will talk about today is from a well-known Italian elite cycling brand Alé Cycling, who work with the best riders in the world. The new range is improved on their already excellent standards, and it all looks awesome. Alé always had colourful and unique designs for their cycling apparel. As you know, I am in love with the colour blue/turquoise and I already have 3 jackets from them, which are absolutely superb (you can find the articles and pics in my blog section). However, this year I made a change in my colour preferences – see below what I chose.

1. KLIMATIK K-TORNADO 2.0 – Water repellent long sleeve jacket woman

What attracted me to this jacket is its bright pink colour which you can hear screaming “SEE ME” on the road while it’s traffic. Brilliant idea, I thought to myself; this way, the drivers can see me better – especially now, when the weather is colder, and the colours of nature haven’t appeared yet. The developed technology by Ale for this jacket is their Klimatik design fabrics: the best possible protection against any type of climate. It’s windproof, made with different portions of material joined together for the best performance and best comfort. Its textile composition is made of a high-quality external fabric: 86% polyester, 14% elastane; internal fabric: 90% polyester, 10% elastane; non-textile membrane: 100% polytetrafluoroethylene.

The front, bright pink area is made with a softshell material to protect from the frontal incoming wind or little raindrops. It has shorter length in comparison with the back, because usually when you lean forward in riding position the jacket/jersey piles up if the length is too long. A light “A” shape at the front bottom, gives it a nice hourglass feminine fit too – which I like. Also in the front, the zipper is covered, giving it a more stylish and elegant look. The collar is generously wide and comfortable, with thermal panel on the back of the neck and thermal brushed collar liner to keep warm. These little details matter and show the attention that the brand give to their clothing.

However, the back area from the shoulders down and under arms has different material. More breathable fabrics but protects from humidity. The back and under arms get more sweat than the other parts of the body, and this different material keeps it breathable and dry. The length is more long to protect and cover good the lower back area from the wind. Has 3 rear spacious rear pockets with reflective details which are also designed more discreet and not so obviously visible finishes off with a silicone waist band to keep the jacket in place during movements while riding.

The fit and feel is almost like a jersey, but due to a 3-layer fabric, it protects like a rain jacket. EVENT membrane and DWR treatment has been used to make this jacket to ensure high breathability and thermal insulation even in wet conditions. K-TORNADO 2.0 jacket folds perfectly with body form and movement while riding due to bonded fabrics and body mapping technology. For comfort the best temperatures to ride are between 6°and 12°c. For intermediate climatic conditions, you can enjoy wearing it in late autumn, winter and early spring.

2. PR-R PYRAMID – Jacket woman

PR. R comes from Alé’s first-ever line, designed for the teams and immediately becoming their classic for its ergonomic race fit and innovative technologies. This Alé Pyramid jacket is similar to Klimatik K-Tornado but full thermal, windproof and designed to ride in lower temperatures. It is constructed too with multi-panel technique and the placement of the fabrics make this jacket breathable and highly protective, therefore suitable for rides which require high intensity effort.

Riding outside in cold windy temperatures is no problem due to the 3layer fabric with Windtex membrane that protects from the wind. On the inside it has soft internal fleece, with micro-square structure which permits quick ventilation of the sweat to get away from the skin. Its main composition is 87% polyester, 13% elastane. Technical and refined details complete the jacket’s performances. You can wear it with a long sleeve base layer when the temperature is near freezing in winter or with a sleeveless thinner baselayer if the temperature is more than 12 degrees Celsius.

I like the race fit so much, and it suits my riding style. It’s very comfortable for intensive rides and extreme temperatures. I really like the race tight fit rather than the regular or loose fit. You can really enjoy the comfort and feel during the rides, thanks to the body mapping technology that makes it feel like a second skin. Also, a common trait that Alé clothes have, specifically the women’s culottes, which are more flared on the form of the female body. It’s a very feminine brand, whilst retaining its performance credentials. The front length is shorter than the back and it stays put due to a silicone waist band. Underarm it had a different material covered with fleece on the inside, to help sweat from underarm area to ventilate. The cuffs are wide enough and raw-cut without sewn edge and anatomically shaped for maximum comfort.

In the back it has got 3 rear discrete, but spacious pockets for the necessities during rides, plus reflective logo on the middle pocket. The unique graphic design fully embodies the modern and technical image of Alè®. The front zipper has a protective internal flap, and it has the cam-lock feature – it means the zipper moves only when held in horizontal position and will not slide up and down during movement. The collar has a thermal padded panel all around the neck and in the back area the material is a little bit longer to cover the knack properly. This feature is made to protect from the wind and sweat which can be uncomfortable during the ride.

3. R-EV1 FUTURE WARM – Bib tights woman

First of all, we all need good tights with good qualities. It is the key to long comfortable rides. However, these are not just regular cycling bib tights. What makes them special and made me curious about them, is their unique concept design. Due to its exclusive wraparound microfibre mono-bib strap eliminates the discomfort caused by the straps around chest area. This is something new for me to try on, as I’ve been using only regular 2 strap bibs. When style meets quality, Alé has it without doubt. The bibs name – R-EV1 – comes from a capsule collection that offers the best textile technology available today.

B-HOT THERMO DWR (durable water repellent) is a special fabric that helps heating and thermoregulate the skin. Around the waist until right under the chest there is a bodice, the front part is made from see-through fleeced mesh which keeps the abdomen warm but ventilated. The rest of the bodice, which is around the back and sides, is made of a thicker fleece non-see-through, which keeps you warm even more. Right in the middle of the back there is a space or “hole” and on the right side there is a relatively small pocket which can fit a car key for example. The top of the bodice is finished with a wide thin band which continues up in the frontal part hanging around the neck. The strap is raw cut which is very comfortable while wearing. The mono strap feature makes possible to undress and dress without needing to take off the jersey or jacket.

Another benefit to these bibs is that they have a waterproof leg cuff. The rainproof leg cuffs can be worn over the shoe cover to protect against dirt and road splashes. It perfectly protects from wind and cold too – the length reaches the mid-calf. Overall, the bib tights are made from multiple panels –each different with a specific role – to ensure the best ergonomic fit and comfort. Alé used the flatlock stitching’s technique for a more comfortable feel. Riding outside in the cold or light rain is acceptable thanks to the DWR fabric which covers the bib tights whole, keeping the legs warm and protected. Two reflective details are put specifically on the back of the tights to be more visible on road.

Now, let’s get to the chamois. Most people never check the chamois, which is why they buy wrong ones. For me personally, the Alé chamois has always been the first choice. I’ve always recommended their products based on my testing. When it comes to chamois, I only have compliments to say. They are one of the best chamois so far and trust me I have lots of kits. Alé understand the importance of the chamois, which is why they developed their own and patented it. From my perspective, it’s super comfortable and worth all their effort. Superblack Woman summer knickers – without braces

Mid-season means trying to find kit that’s not too warm and definitely not too cold. Thankfully, Rosti are based in the north of Itay, where spring isn’t always filled with sunshine.

These summer style knickers come without braces, and come down to the area of the mid-calf on the lower leg, keeping you warm… but not too warm. Braces on shorts can often be uncomfortable for women, and as long as the waist elasticity and waistband are good, then you’ll be fine without straps.

These knickers are high-waisted and the band is tight enough for me to keep the knickers up in place. It is woman specific form and I like this feature because I have a smaller waist and I don’t always find the right size to fit. The length of the inseam is perfect to my height ratio (180 cm tall). Actually this is my first ever pair of three quarter length cycling knickers and I really like them; they are perfect for spring and autumn and colder days in summer.

The fabric used by Rosti is THIUNDERBIKE® fabric, chosen for these Band cut tights for its strength and quality, it has outstanding qualities: softness, utmost comfort, multi-directional stretch and durability. They’re made in 93% PES and 7% Elastane, which is really comfortable and allows easy movement.

They feel comfortable while riding due to high quality fabrics and pad. The classic black colour matches with any color and pattern you want too!

The compression is medium and it helps to keep the pants stay put, together with the excellent waist band. When adding kms to your legs, it’s all about the bibs. If they are not comfortable, then your ride is compromised.

Comfy bibs = happy cyclist = good results. Like the matching PRR range jersey, these really cool and stylishly modern tights and made from mainly recycled fabrics. That’s totally awesomeand best of all, they’re body mapped which means that I look and feel awesome in them, able to perform at my best and to look great too – hey, I’m a woman

The style matches with the Jersey, with the same colors and design placed in the middle of the upper leg, giving the impression of a bibshort with over 80% of recycled fabric used in their production, the quality remains high, with 4 waystretch fabrics that fit and don’t sag and which move freely with me, like a true second skin.

The inner face of the fabric is soft against the skin, with a brushed fleecy surface, creating air pockets of warm air to insulate you from the cold. At the same time as being warm, it’s breathable too, which is super important in tights, to maximise wicking and to ensure that you don’t overheat or over-sweat.

One crucial fitting area for us women are the straps. The wide and strong highly elastic braces hold the tights in place while minimising pressure over the shoulders. The straps feel light on the shoulders as they fall without too much pressure across the chest, but maybe ALÉ could look towards a total female strap design in the future –just a thought… A breathable mesh back maximises air flow and allows your skin breathe as it optimises heat regulation when working hard, and yes it does really work. When riding hard, the bibs must stay put, in order for you to fully concentrate on tour ride. The less distractions, the more focus. Even on the long rides, where the bibs strapsare worn for a long time, they don’t feel uncomfortable, you can barely feel them. I really like this technology!

The tights have an excellent women’s specific W4H Green Seat Pad which is not bulky and wicks away moisture well, keeping you comfortable all day long. When pedalling long distance rides, the bibs feel great and very comfy.

It’s a high-density open-cell foam (100 g/m², thickness: 12 mm) pad which provides support to key contact points, ensuring comfort all day long. Perforation holes in the foam give a significant boost to ventilation and breathability, keeping you feeling fresh as you tap out the kms. The fit really is superb and allows me to show off my athleticism, which I’ve worked hard to achieve. Yes, I look and feel race ready, which is what ALÉ set out to achieve.

I admire the initiative about making “green” recycled clothes, for a better world. So in summary, the price is commensurate with the quality. I kindly recommend the Ale PRR Green Bib Tights, if you also like to combine great style with performance quality!

They’re form fitting, which means that you look great in them, and they also have good compression where needed, showing off your body and your style and allowing you to perform to your best. You simply look and feel great – and here’s why…

This stylish bib tight is a multi-tasker; it’s suitable for the long winter trainings, rides in the cold autumn and rides in early spring – especially in the mountain areas, where even spring can bring cold days. The material doesn’t fear humidity thanks to the ALE´ WR treatment and water repellency, meaning that they protect you against light rain, allowing you to simply enjoy the ride.

The panels are well cut and superbly stitched, with no sagging or chaffing. And ALE´ have used materials of varying thickness in different areas, giving ultimate performance. I love the wide elasticated braces, which combine the Ale´ elastic band with a central breathable mesh to help wicking and comfort. They help to keep the tights in place against me like a second skin. The lower leg panels sit tight against the calf and there’s string zips to fasten them. On the seat area, the stitching is super tough, with ALE´ using the W8 HF shammy. In use, the shammy is very comfortable and helps with moisture control on long hard rides, which I have lots of here in Transylvania. I like to feel good and look good, and everything about these bib tights matches my needs.

They’re very warm and comfortable on those long cold rides of early spring. I like that they are high waisted and fitted, giving a well contoured figure, showing me how I feel and adding to the comfort. The mesh between the straps also helps with ventilating the body sweat, keeping the area dry. What ALÉ have done really well, and which I truly do appreciate, and I also think it’s a signature from them, are the straps. Yes, it’s my favourite part of a perfect garment, and they feel so light and comfy, and stay in place, compared with other bib straps from other brands.

I’m a performance athlete, so my cycling kit needs to match my expectations. I’m also a woman, and that means that looking good and style is also important – thankfully ALÉ and I think alike

I find cycling technology fascinating, I really do. Not the kind of technology that we all know about, making bikes go faster and creating lighter and more aerodynamic frames; no, I like the science and thinking that goes into developing the fabrics, the clothing and the pads. Even as a young school student, I chose to study textile design rather than engineering. I like to get to the bottom of fabric technology and design – pardon the pun – and I’m fascinated by the very clever people who study bottoms in order to make our cycling so much more comfortable.

Did you know for instance that women have a greater spectrum of bottom shapes and structures than men, it’s true. Elastic Interface have researched this, partnering with the Department of Biomedical Science at the University of Padua, Italy. After developing their First Ladies specific pads, Elastic Interface listened to the feedback and wanted to improve things, and so looked towards the scientists in order to better understand female cyclists bottoms.

Comfort & performance has to match style

Coming from a family with 3 x sisters, and a wife who is also 1 of 3 sisters, I have to concede that women tend to come first in so many ways. I’m happy to admit that my elder sister was the better runner, and at home my wife is certainly the boss – so it’s not surprising that women also take the lead in the bottom stakes. All of this causes an issue for cycling brands though, and Elastic Interface recognised this. Designing chamois pads for men is reasonably straight forward in comparison to the necessary variety needed in order to cater for the variety of ladies bottoms, keeping them in the comfort which they richly deserve.

For example, men aren’t as detailed in their thinking and clothing choices as women are – I’m trying to be diplomatic guys. In short, men will simply choose any pair of reasonably expensive bib shorts and then ride in them damn hard, because that’s what you do as a guy; lathering on the chamois cream and putting aside any slight discomfort, saying that it’s simply down to a hard workout. Women on the other hand like fashion.. I know, you’re surprised – however, it’s not simply about how clothing looks. They like to ensure that their garments are well made in all aspects and that they’re getting value and yes, performance. They look at the small details, because women simply don’t want to sit uncomfortably when riding. They like to look good and feel good and to be able to perform hard, without later getting off the bike and having to sit on an ice pack. Ask yourself this: when did you last think about your own bottom when cycling and when choosing your bibs? When you bought your last pair of bibs, did you look at the chamois pad and: (1) ask if it suited your style of riding, (2) ask yourself if it was suitable for your bottom type?

Your bottom shape isn’t limitless… honestly

Here’s and interesting fact too – did you know that however many cakes you eat with your cafe stop cappuccino, your bottom remains the same size – truly, it does! Yes, I know that you might have to squash and squeeze yourself into a pair of highly compressive XL shorts if you get too carried away on cake, but that excess stuff around the back of you – it’s not your bottom. You’ll be very pleased to hear that your bottom remains small(ish), meaning that the very clever product developers at Elastic Interface only have to make their extensive selection of chamois pads in one size! That’s the really good news. Now let’s get back to women’s bottoms – in a sporting context of course! Yes, women have far more complex bottoms and accordingly, far more complex needs from their chamois pad; which is why Elastic Interface carried out their extensive scientific studies – about cycling bums!

It’s time then to look at ladies bottoms in more detail, and to talk about the 3 specific chamois pads that Elastic Interface produce to ensure the comfort of the worlds female cyclists…

WP1 – Standard Protection Chamois

There’s nothing standard about women, everyone knows that. However, there had to be a line from which the rich variety of women can be assessed – or their bottoms to be more precise; which is why Elastic Interface have produced the WP1. It’s their “standard” protection pad for women, based on extensive research. It targets those women who feel the need for a more substantial and continuous support throughout the perineal area whilst cycling.

The pelvic tract area is developed to support the rotation of the pelvic bones while pedaling and paddings are skillfully placed according to anthropometrical parameters, providing the ultimate in cycling comfort protection.

WP2- A Highly Protective Pad

Some women prefer a highly protective pad, yet they may experience some numbness in the perineal area, especially when in the road position. After extensive study and research, with this solution Elastic Interface created a “pressure relief” zone by using lower density foams in the perineal area, while guaranteeing the same support and protection of always throughout the rest of the pad. These minor changes in the pad production maximise protection and comfort for this group of female cyclists. After all, there will be times when you yourself have felt “not quite right” in certain bib shorts.

Elastic Interface carried out their product research so that they could answer the necessary comfort questions for female cyclists needing that extra protection.

WP3 – For Women Sensitive to Compression

This construction of pad is intended for those women who are extremely sensitive to compression. Additional relief is delivered by using thinner and lower density foams in the genital area, minimizing pressure. In this solution, the ischiatic padding is raised and the perineal area features a medium-density padding only. The pelvic tract area is developed to support the rotation of the pelvic bones while pedaling and paddings are skillfully placed according to anthropometrical parameters. All of these particular technological develops are designed to provided the ultimate in comfort for female cyclists who are just that little bit more physiologically sensitive.
