Early Season Performance in Nordic Conditions

Early season training in Northern Europe is always a challenge. Cold temperatures, wind, and constantly changing conditions demand cycling gear that is not only comfortable, but reliable over long hours on the bike.Too often brands forget this, working simply towards aero products, whilst not appreciating that comfort and movement equals performance.

Over the past weeks, I’ve been testing several pieces from the GripGrab PACR collection in real training conditions in Estonia – temperatures around +2 to +8°C, strong winds and typical early spring variability. Yes, cold for early spring, but ideal for testing women’s cycling clothing! The focus of this review is on functionality, performance and comfort during structured training (10–14 hours per week), rather than just first impressions. For me, as a semi-pro racer, clothing has first to perform, and that means that it has to be functional – style is an added benefit.

First Impression – Clean Design, Functional Fit

GripGrab follows a very clean and minimal design approach, but what stands out more is the fit. All pieces feel purpose-built for riding, with no unnecessary bulk or distractions. They use a body mapping process, meaning that the fit is performance-oriented but not overly aggressive, which makes it suitable for long endurance sessions without compromising comfort.

How did I find it: overall comfortable, and yes, it did have that necessary movement, whilst being quite simply a nice product to wear. Ultimately, if it’s comfortable and functional, then I feel better and I’ll perform better. Do GripGrab achieve this – yes, I think that they do.

The quality is good, with excellent cut and fabrics, and the pockets are strong and easy to reach, with a good quality zip on the security pocket. Small points matter with cycling kit, far more than loud aesthetics.

Performance in Cold Conditions: Layering System – What Works

GripGrab produce technical fabrics and don’t over-complicate things. Their combination of:

• PACR Thermal Long Sleeve Jersey
• Insulated Midlayer Vest
• Thermal Bib Shorts + Leg Warmers

This proved to be a very effective setup in temperatures between +2 and +8°C. Ultimately, it kept me warm and I felt comfortable. Ultimately, that’s what we want to achieve. It’s unfussy and uncomplicated kit, that allows me the freedom to move on the bike and to relax in the cold temperatures of early spring. The leg warmers stayed firmly fitted and formed a “second-skin” feeling, which is necessary. They didn’t sag and they were comfortable at the upper hem, tucked neatly under the shorts. They were warm without being too warm, and had the right level of moisture beading for light rain. They have superb stretch, due to the quality of the material, which is always a bonus.

Layering and leg warmers are important in early season and races. Would I be happy to take these along to a race – absolutely.

The layering works especially well because:

• the vest adds core warmth without overheating
• the jersey regulates temperature effectively during changing intensity
• the system adapts easily as conditions change during the ride

This is particularly important during longer Zone 2 sessions where body temperature fluctuates over time. Maintaining layers when training in early season can be tricky. Clothes have to work and be comfortable – these are.

On the Bike – Comfort and Stability

During longer rides (2–4 hours), the key factors for me were:

• Stability of the fit – no shifting or adjustment needed
• Breathability – no excessive overheating even during harder efforts
• Freedom of movement – especially noticeable in the upper body

I guess that this is due to the work carried out GripGrab to develop and use the right fabrics. They work closely with world teams such as UNO X, and that feeds down into these jerseys and shorts.

The PACR Thermal Bib Shorts combined with leg warmers provided a surprisingly versatile setup. They offer enough warmth for cold starts, while still feeling lighter and more flexible than full winter tights. Best of all, the compression and cut means that they stay firm and stable when I ride – like a second skin, allowing me to simply focus on performance.

Gloves – Critical in Nordic Conditions

Gloves are often an overlooked but critical element of our cycling kit. GripGrab made their name with gloves, and they still stand out today. The Waterproof Knitted Winter Gloves stood out for me during these tests, as one of the most important pieces of kit in these conditions.

In temperatures close to freezing:

• hands stayed warm without overheating
• grip remained secure in both dry and damp conditions
• no loss of control or dexterity during braking and shifting

For Nordic riders, this is a key detail that can make or break a ride. The gloves fitted comfortably, had the necessary stretch and feel to them; and I was able to use my devices screens with them on – always a bonus. Breathability vs Protection

One of the most important aspects of early season gear is balancing insulation with breathability.

Let me be clear about this: I liked the look of Ale Cycling’s products from the very beginning. Yes, aesthetic elements and finishing are important to women cyclists in particular .

This cold season, I had the opportunity to test some of the latest kits from Ale Cycling, specially designed for women, for the cold periods of the year, with wind, rain and low temperatures. Here in Transylvania it gets very cold and clothing has to perform .

Alé Cycling – Cosmic Women’s Jacket

Cold mornings have a way of testing your motivation to train . The air is chilly, the road is damp and every piece of gear suddenly counts. It’s in this environment that the Alé Cosmic women’s jacket starts to make sense . From the first few minutes on the bike, it feels like a natural extension of your body, rather than an extra layer. It effectively blocks the cold wind, especially on the more exposed sections of the road, while the soft thermal fleece inside maintains a stable warmth without overheating once the pace picks up.

One of the key moments that stuck in my mind was when a light drizzle started—the kind that usually soaks regular pants in minutes . With the K-Atmo 3.0 on, I barely noticed the change; the water-repellent treatment did its job, and the fit didn’t feel tight or chafe uncomfortably even after an hour in the saddle. As the sun rose, the reflective details caught the light and helped me feel safer on quieter roads, a small but valuable touch when visibility is reduced.

Another subtle but important detail was the seating experience. Wrapped in style – with Alé Cycling

When Alé Cycling launched their Fall-Winter 2022/23 collection, it was designed just for these time periods. However, they made it so well, that’s it’s also perfect for early spring, which is why I’m still wearing it in Transylvania.

The range has lots of great garments: breathable, protective, comfortable cycle clothing for all weather conditions, where colours and design stands out at first sight. The style is based on art in textile engineering, to offer jerseys, bib tights, jackets, underwear, and accessories that improve the cyclist’s performance in lower temperatures – like early spring too. The theme of the new collection is “No matter the season”: an invitation to go cycling without worrying about weather conditions.

I always look forward to and like the feeling of fresh new kit to test. I get excited when opening a box with new kit! Feels like opening a present – Hehe. Well, the new kit I will talk about today is from a well-known Italian elite cycling brand Alé Cycling, who work with the best riders in the world. The new range is improved on their already excellent standards, and it all looks awesome. Alé always had colourful and unique designs for their cycling apparel. As you know, I am in love with the colour blue/turquoise and I already have 3 jackets from them, which are absolutely superb (you can find the articles and pics in my blog section). However, this year I made a change in my colour preferences – see below what I chose.

1. KLIMATIK K-TORNADO 2.0 – Water repellent long sleeve jacket woman

What attracted me to this jacket is its bright pink colour which you can hear screaming “SEE ME” on the road while it’s traffic. Brilliant idea, I thought to myself; this way, the drivers can see me better – especially now, when the weather is colder, and the colours of nature haven’t appeared yet. The developed technology by Ale for this jacket is their Klimatik design fabrics: the best possible protection against any type of climate. It’s windproof, made with different portions of material joined together for the best performance and best comfort. Its textile composition is made of a high-quality external fabric: 86% polyester, 14% elastane; internal fabric: 90% polyester, 10% elastane; non-textile membrane: 100% polytetrafluoroethylene.

The front, bright pink area is made with a softshell material to protect from the frontal incoming wind or little raindrops. It has shorter length in comparison with the back, because usually when you lean forward in riding position the jacket/jersey piles up if the length is too long. A light “A” shape at the front bottom, gives it a nice hourglass feminine fit too – which I like. Also in the front, the zipper is covered, giving it a more stylish and elegant look. The collar is generously wide and comfortable, with thermal panel on the back of the neck and thermal brushed collar liner to keep warm. These little details matter and show the attention that the brand give to their clothing.

However, the back area from the shoulders down and under arms has different material. More breathable fabrics but protects from humidity. The back and under arms get more sweat than the other parts of the body, and this different material keeps it breathable and dry. The length is more long to protect and cover good the lower back area from the wind. Has 3 rear spacious rear pockets with reflective details which are also designed more discreet and not so obviously visible finishes off with a silicone waist band to keep the jacket in place during movements while riding.

The fit and feel is almost like a jersey, but due to a 3-layer fabric, it protects like a rain jacket. EVENT membrane and DWR treatment has been used to make this jacket to ensure high breathability and thermal insulation even in wet conditions. K-TORNADO 2.0 jacket folds perfectly with body form and movement while riding due to bonded fabrics and body mapping technology. For comfort the best temperatures to ride are between 6°and 12°c. For intermediate climatic conditions, you can enjoy wearing it in late autumn, winter and early spring.

2. PR-R PYRAMID – Jacket woman

PR. R comes from Alé’s first-ever line, designed for the teams and immediately becoming their classic for its ergonomic race fit and innovative technologies. This Alé Pyramid jacket is similar to Klimatik K-Tornado but full thermal, windproof and designed to ride in lower temperatures. It is constructed too with multi-panel technique and the placement of the fabrics make this jacket breathable and highly protective, therefore suitable for rides which require high intensity effort.

Riding outside in cold windy temperatures is no problem due to the 3layer fabric with Windtex membrane that protects from the wind. On the inside it has soft internal fleece, with micro-square structure which permits quick ventilation of the sweat to get away from the skin. Its main composition is 87% polyester, 13% elastane. Technical and refined details complete the jacket’s performances. You can wear it with a long sleeve base layer when the temperature is near freezing in winter or with a sleeveless thinner baselayer if the temperature is more than 12 degrees Celsius.

I like the race fit so much, and it suits my riding style. It’s very comfortable for intensive rides and extreme temperatures. I really like the race tight fit rather than the regular or loose fit. You can really enjoy the comfort and feel during the rides, thanks to the body mapping technology that makes it feel like a second skin. Also, a common trait that Alé clothes have, specifically the women’s culottes, which are more flared on the form of the female body. It’s a very feminine brand, whilst retaining its performance credentials. The front length is shorter than the back and it stays put due to a silicone waist band. Underarm it had a different material covered with fleece on the inside, to help sweat from underarm area to ventilate. The cuffs are wide enough and raw-cut without sewn edge and anatomically shaped for maximum comfort.

In the back it has got 3 rear discrete, but spacious pockets for the necessities during rides, plus reflective logo on the middle pocket. The unique graphic design fully embodies the modern and technical image of Alè®. The front zipper has a protective internal flap, and it has the cam-lock feature – it means the zipper moves only when held in horizontal position and will not slide up and down during movement. The collar has a thermal padded panel all around the neck and in the back area the material is a little bit longer to cover the knack properly. This feature is made to protect from the wind and sweat which can be uncomfortable during the ride.

3. R-EV1 FUTURE WARM – Bib tights woman

First of all, we all need good tights with good qualities. It is the key to long comfortable rides. However, these are not just regular cycling bib tights. What makes them special and made me curious about them, is their unique concept design. Due to its exclusive wraparound microfibre mono-bib strap eliminates the discomfort caused by the straps around chest area. This is something new for me to try on, as I’ve been using only regular 2 strap bibs. When style meets quality, Alé has it without doubt. The bibs name – R-EV1 – comes from a capsule collection that offers the best textile technology available today.

B-HOT THERMO DWR (durable water repellent) is a special fabric that helps heating and thermoregulate the skin. Around the waist until right under the chest there is a bodice, the front part is made from see-through fleeced mesh which keeps the abdomen warm but ventilated. The rest of the bodice, which is around the back and sides, is made of a thicker fleece non-see-through, which keeps you warm even more. Right in the middle of the back there is a space or “hole” and on the right side there is a relatively small pocket which can fit a car key for example. The top of the bodice is finished with a wide thin band which continues up in the frontal part hanging around the neck. The strap is raw cut which is very comfortable while wearing. The mono strap feature makes possible to undress and dress without needing to take off the jersey or jacket.

Another benefit to these bibs is that they have a waterproof leg cuff. The rainproof leg cuffs can be worn over the shoe cover to protect against dirt and road splashes. It perfectly protects from wind and cold too – the length reaches the mid-calf. Overall, the bib tights are made from multiple panels –each different with a specific role – to ensure the best ergonomic fit and comfort. Alé used the flatlock stitching’s technique for a more comfortable feel. Riding outside in the cold or light rain is acceptable thanks to the DWR fabric which covers the bib tights whole, keeping the legs warm and protected. Two reflective details are put specifically on the back of the tights to be more visible on road.

Now, let’s get to the chamois. Most people never check the chamois, which is why they buy wrong ones. For me personally, the Alé chamois has always been the first choice. I’ve always recommended their products based on my testing. When it comes to chamois, I only have compliments to say. They are one of the best chamois so far and trust me I have lots of kits. Alé understand the importance of the chamois, which is why they developed their own and patented it. From my perspective, it’s super comfortable and worth all their effort. The pad’s velocity is up to 8h of comfort. It’s light, slim and works in the right areas – no more details required. Why not try yourself and see what I’m talking about?

Personally, I think that it’s a super stylish and performance orientated range of cycle clothing, that fits where it should and makes me feel awesome on the bike. Spring isn’t always as sunny and warm as we would like. Thankfully Rosti know this and have a great range of mid-season clothes, made with their usual design panache and quality. I really like the turquoise color in general, either dark or light shade. This Rosti jacket comes in turquoise color on the torso area, the sleeves are grey with reflective particles, and the back of the forearm is matte black with gradient sized dots. Multiple pieces of fabric are beautifully sewn to get a better fit – viola!

In terms of the fabric and finishing, Rosti are renowned for this and their new SPRING Jersey is no exception. Working with world tour teams and the best riders, Rosti have worked on the performance of the seams for 2022, taking time to design and test the new look, remodelling the fit of the jersey, which is a race fit and follows your body and curves perfectly, thanks to the high quality technical multi-directional fabrics. The new panel designs are cut to perform and fit best when on the bike and in position, which is ultimately what we require.

Fit & Performance

The ergonomic cut and look of this SPRING jersey is really stylish, and due to the thermal properties of the fabrics, it also keeps you warm and keeps the winds at bay. Regarding the fit, I appreciate that the front length of this jacket is long enough to be comfortable and look good but also suited for my waist – in general it is hard for me to find the right length size on the front jackets because I have a long but thin torso and sometimes the fit is too short.

It’s comfortable due to its light material, but it also keeps the body temperature warm and keeps out the cold wind. Thankfully, the thermal properties and mix of fabrics still allow for a breathable garment, as you’ll also be creating your own heat on the bike. Attention to visibility on the road is addressed by Rosti, thanks to the reflective inserts on the left sleeve and on the back. The jersey has the usual 3 appliqué back pockets and a special mobile phone pouch – which these days is important, not just for emergency’s… but photos too

Technicity & Style

The pockets are spacious and secure. Can fill anything you need during a ride, for example: a spare tube, a bar, vest, phone, keys. The advantage of the middle pocket is the pouch for more security. So, no worries about losing your things when riding.

A special 3D texture fabric has been chosen for the more exposed zones of the arms. The underarm is in contrasting colour. The long sleeves are cut tight and yet the elasticity means that movement is not restricted, and the sleeves are neatly finished with strong cuffs that bring things tightly into your wrists. An inner silicone gripper around the waist holds it all in place and it looks and feels like asecond skin.

The overall colors combined with the design result in a classy look spring jacket which I can match with the color cameleon of my bike, and style after all, is always important!

New Year, new style and more fun!

The Ale´ Women’s winter jacket Switch DWR Combi looks lovely, like most of Ale’s wonderful collections, always full of bright and vivid colors, with unique designs. The one I have on test is a shade of light blue or celeste color, one of my favorites of course!

Here in Transylvania, winter can be really difficult considering that temperatures can even reach below -20 degrees Celsius. So you better dress up suitable for the cold weather. Its material is similar to the other jacket that I tested last year – the “Ale´ Future Nordik Lady jacket” – the windproof and waterproof design blends of fabrics used intelligently in different areas:

Rain Microwave DWR,
Thermo Garzato DWR, and
Superroubaix

It comes with the same well thought out material under arm area as the Klimatik, which is soft and breathable, making it extremely comfortable to wear and to to ride in. And, if a material technicity works, why change it. After all, a wheel is still round, for the same reason!

The thing that differs from these jackets, which you might already have noticed, the name of the Switch DWR contains the word “Combi”, which refers to a combination of a jacket and a vest, making it a superb winter warmer. Actually, it has an incorporated vest inside the jacket, for keeping the torso warmer. The inner front vest clings nicely to your body and gives the jacket a double functionality, made of an elastic material containing thermic fabric for warmth.

All I know is that it’s a well cut, form fitting and well produced jacket, that works superbly in winter and helps me to look stylish while riding and nice and warm too. Staying warm and comfortable is important, and the Alé Switch DWR Combi achieves this, while adding performance and style to its merits. The outer jacket can therefore hang more loose trapping air to keep you warm, but still close enough to give a great sporting fit.

The material coating and tight weave allows moisture to bead and helps to keep you dry, whilst the high cut collar keeps the wind away from your neck. The wide and strong elasticated waist hem keeps it all in place, whilst the athletic fit is superb, meaning it follows your body and looks super on your hard worked and well earned athletic form. Aesthetically it’s awesome and this is matched by the colours and the dot gradient pattern, giving it a modern and stylish look. Wide cuffs keep it close fitting on the arms, and the material is stretchy, allowing me a good freedom of movement. It’s nicely finished with 3 good sized and strong rear pockets, that are elasticated at the top, to help keep things safely tucked away.

I like the Alé Switch DWR Combi a lot and it’s a fun and stylish jersey for winter. How does it compare to the Klimatik jacket – well, that’s for really cold days, so I need both! What more can I say – I’m a stylish lady and we need choices!

The Alé Future Nordik Lady jacket is a superb winter garment, and extremely useful for other cold days in the hills. Best of all, the ladies and the men’s jackets are cut differently, ensuring that the fit is maximised for the person wearing it. Too often, ladies jackets can simply be a smaller version of the men’s, but Alé pride themselves in quality and design and this jacket is no exception.

With this in mind, I tested it here in Transylvania over the winter months. Let’s start off with the design for a change, as this really is a very smart and stylish looking jacket. It oozes quality in both the body mapped cut, which clings to your form so comfortably due the strength and stretch of the material, and the simple design aesthetic. The cut is ideal for women, being slim at the waist and allowing room and comfort across the chest area, not feeling unduly tight or constricting. I have a slim waist and good shoulders, and the jacket felt just right, stretching and sitting nicely on me.

What I also like about the Ale Future Nordik Lady Jacket and the womens Color Blcock Jersey, is the bright and vivid colours. I recived both items in blue, my favorite colour. From my perspective, ALÉ have always had among other brands, the most impressive designs and also the highest quality materials.

It’s stylish and chic and looks like a high quality garment, and the blue coloured ladies jacket that I tested looked really amazing. It has a high collar to protect my neck and slim cut sleeves that extend across the back of the hand at the cuffs. I really did like the collar, which has an inner lining to the high cut design, which is a soft perforated fabric that extends above the collar at the rear and which kept me feeling very snug and warm. It’s important that on the neck area it’s softer mesh which feels much more comfortable. It’s these small details that Alé seem to be very good at, adding a great deal of technicity to their cycle clothing.

The waist grippers were nice and wide and strong, which I also really liked, as it pulled the jacket in and kept it in place. Alé call this their J-Stability System, enabling further aerodynamic gains and a perfect fit. This shapes the jersey at the sleeve and bottom hem to sit smoothly when you’re settled in the riding position, helping to maintain a natural fit and reduce drag – and yes, it works well and looks and feels great in action.

It’s finished off with simple black styling to the fabric at the rear, with 3 deep and easy to access rear pockets. There’s ample room for all the essentials in the pockets and importantly, they’re held well in place. The zipper is very strong and I loved the wide elasticated fabric band behind the zip, all the way from the waist to the collar, and which really helped to keep the wind out.

The rear of the jacket has a curved bottom panel to cover you when in the riding position, and it’s super stretchy for all shapes of rider Like the collar, this is lined with the perforated cloth and finished with a gel band to hold it firmly in place when the jacket is fastened. And, when it is fastened, I felt so good and the jacket looked amazing. Yes, it’s an Italian race fit garment, so be careful when ordering; but when wearing the right size, it offers good freedom and movement and feels great when riding.

How does it perform overall – time to look more closely at the fabric. When putting the jacket on, you immediately notice the thermo winter fabric, so soft on the inside. The jacket also feels close and warm straight away, and due to the quality of the materials and the cut, movement is not restricted and I felt comfortable in the riding position. I love to check out the quality of the finishing on cycle clothing, and the stitching looked first class and beautifully finished. The outer fabric is a tough and strong 4-way stretch laminate, which meant that when we rode in bad weather, the rain simply beaded away and we were kept dry. It also ensured that the wind was kept out too, and the jacket worked well with just the Alé winter base layer underneath. The fabric on the front panels is heavier and thicker, because that’s where the winter winds will hit you.

I also really liked the way that Alé have designed the under arm area, using a very nice softer material which lets the body breathe. For such a tough winter jacket, I also found breathability was quite good, even on some tough hill climbs. The very best kit isn’t necessarily the cheapest and this Alé Future Nordik jacket is no exception, but the price fits the quality. It’s designed for the coldest of conditions and performed well on winter roads in Transylvania. It felt really great on and very comfortable when riding long and hard winter routes.

At the end of the day, that’s what you need from a good winter jacket: performance and style, and the Alé Future Nordik simply oozes quality in performance and style.
