So, that’s probably the reason why they put love into their continual search for innovative materials, and into the care of every little detail. The Alé cycling clothing is made with a passion and with high-performance cycling in mind, from the finest available fabrics and high-quality materials. It’s incorrect to think that Lycra is Lycra. Ultimately, it comes in a whole spectrum of qualities. Over the years, in continuous tests and trials to keep improving, this leading Italian brand have sought to keep their cycle clothing relevant, and their latest Pragma cycle jersey and Master 2.0 bib shorts are an excellent example of their adherence to excellence. The result is Alé garments that are a true expression of tailoring and Italian quality.

Thanks to Pedalnorth.com, I’ve recently had the chance to test out these new items from the latest Alé range, and I have to say, they’ve been impressive. As a pro elite mountain bike rider, my clothing has to perform, and both the Pragma Color Block jersey, and the Master 2.0 bibs didn’t let me down.

Quality materials & style in perfect harmony

The most important thing about cycling jersey, and bib shorts is the quality of the materials used, and how they’re cut. The clothing has to fit well, move with you, be hard-wearing and relate to the conditions of a long and hard bike ride. Detail is important, and Alé know this when they design a cycling jersey. The Pragma Color Block jersey is a close fitting, race-ready jersey, with high breathability, especially under the arms and on the back; and, this lightweight jersey also has great UV protection, meaning that’s it’s ready to ride in the sun.

Whilst the jersey is close fitting, the material is multi-directional, with strong stretch properties, meaning that you maintain free and unrestricted movement. On the bike, I can simply concentrate on riding, whilst the jersey does its job as a second skin. In terms of all-important styling too; what did Teodora say when she saw me dressed like this?

“That’s it—you finally look like a cool cyclist!”

So yeah, besides the fact that the fabric, fit, and attention to detail make the outfit super comfortable, it definitely doesn’t hurt that it makes you look good on the bike too.

The short answer is that bibs are important

What’s the first thing I care about as a cyclist? The quality of the chamois in the bib shorts. It’s as important to a cyclist as tuna is to a cat – and that’s critical! If there’s one secret to surviving long training sessions and full days in the saddle, it’s this: happy rides start with a happy backside. Thankfully, Alé knows this, and support – literally- many of the world’s leading teams, and use only the finest chamois pads. They describe these high-performance shorts as ‘The go-to shorts for comfort, […] engineered to deliver the ultimate fit and functionality for every rider, whatever the occasion,’ and I have to agree. They’re close fitting, stable and have the necessary compression – alongside that all-important, high-quality chamois. In this case, Alé have used their in-house 4H chamois.

The 4H chamois offers luxurious comfort for medium distance rides. Many riders don’t check the chamois and what it is actually designed for – you should do so. In this case, the pad was ideal for fun rides and mixed training for me. The 4H pad is constructed from elastic micro-fibre with padding strategically positioned in the contact points and features a central relief channel to avoid pressure on the nerve endings. High density 90 kg/cm2 padding is used in the ischiatic and perineal areas where it is needed most. This pad combines comfort, flexibility, wicking and breathability to ensure the utmost protection against the stresses of the road.

Alongside the wide, soft and strong, high-quality straps, and the laser cut legs, these shorts have been comfortable and easy to wear on my training rides – and that’s an important issue, as well as a thumbs up!

Testing time on the bike can be comfortable

I’m always happy to try out and test high-quality gear—and Alé definitely proves to be a reliable partner when it comes to that. The season is in full swing, and the weather is already putting a dampener on things

We’re already well into the cycling season, with one grand tour already completed – Giro D’ Italia 2024. The weather on the Giro is famously fickle, with days of high heat under the blazing sun, interspersed with mountain storms that lash down on the riders, and with hail stones dancing on the tarmac as riders try to stay warm and upright on the tight, twisting mountain roads. Images abound of riders crossing cols with snow laying deep beside the road edges. Yes, the Giro is the toughest of all challenges for the peloton, both mentally and physically – which is why it’s such a beautiful race to watch. This year was no exception, and the Stelvio day had to be amended, due to severe cracks in the famous tarmac. Even the alternative route had the peloton refusing to race. Hopefully, the TdF will bring better weather; however, just in case, we wanted to give you a few wet-ride kit tips, with some of our own favourite high-performance options.

There’s no bad weather – just poor kit choices

There’s a saying in cycling, that ‘there’s no such thing as bad weather, just poor kit!’ However, the Stelvio day did remind us that, now and again the weather can be atrocious. With the riding seeming to get tougher as each year passes, the technicity of the kit continues to be critical for the peloton. And, there’s a synergy here with the average cyclist and those who ride in clubs and groups everywhere, as the weather becomes more and more unpredictable. Back in the U.K., the recent Cicle Classic one day UCI race – the largest in the U.K. for 2024 – was cancelled on the day, due to a freak rain storm that lefts the route lying dangerously under water. Pro riders are being protected now against hyperthermia, meaning that clothing designers and fabric technicians have become more aware of the need to keep driving forward with innovation, protecting cyclists with the most technical and weather resistant fabrics in the world of cycling.

Bib shorts are a cycle clothing necessity that you have to get right. Thankfully, ALÉ are a brand that understands this and put all of their world tour expertise and years of research into this critical area of clothing. For me, the three main elements of the pad to get right are: the pad, the fabric, and the straps. Here in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the riding is unrelenting, meaning that cycling bib shorts need to perform. There is no place for cycle clothing that might be okay – it has to be the very best, and these men’s cycling bib shorts from Italy are top quality.

Let’s start with that all-important chamois pad, which is just as important to us cyclists, as Tuna is to a cat. This pad from ALÉ is all about technicity and comfort, all rode long; so, let’s find out more about it, shall we.

The Science of the Chamois Pad

1. Developed with an open cell foam with a density of 100 kg / m3 and a thickness of 12 mm to ensure excellent protection during rides.

2. The perforation of the foam with 3mm holes significantly increases breathability and the passage of air, for a pleasant feeling of freshness and dryness.

3. The HF moulded shape improves the support on the saddle, while the central relief channel protects the nerve endings for greater support even on longer rides.

In simple terms, having used these shorts for some time now, the pad is absolutely awesome, even on a warm day; allowing you to stay comfortable and sweat free all ride long.

Movement, Cut & Compression

Looking at the Hammer bibs generally, they’re made by ALÉ using their lightweight, fast-wicking Airfix fabric, providing mild targeted compression to your muscles in just the right places. I love the soft feel and compression, and how the body-mapping of the shorts and fabric choice work together, wrapping my upper legs like a second skin. The raw-cut leg design ensures total freedom of movement and increased comfort, keeping the shorts perfectly in place, while the super breathable fabric with 38% Lycra is quick drying and offers built-in UV protection – viola!

The cut is multi-panelled, using the ALÉ body-mapping expertise, and the soft feel to the fabric is simply quite nice. It’s so well made and simply stylish, in the perfect way that only Italian brands can do.

Those Finishing Touches

Finally, then, the braces, which are wide, strong, made from a heavy weave elasticated fabric (80% polyamide, 20% elastane) and sit perfectly across the shoulders, and don’t move around, as some cheaply finished bib straps often seem to do. The straps join the lower leg fabric using a mesh weave for maximum breathability and wicking across the back, using a high quality back/waist insert made from 77% polyester and 23% elastane.

I’ve really enjoyed testing out the kit from SIGR. It’s well made, stylish and modern and performs well.It’s a new brand to me, but one that I would happily recommend. In terms of the testing, last but not least, what is a kit review without making sure the bib shorts are holding the same standards as the jerseys, right?

The bib short Riksväg 92 Cargo (which btw means national road ) is a slightly upgraded version of the Riksväg 92, design to be the choice for long distance cycling. It is made of breathable material and has a two mesh straps keeping the short in place. Made out of recycled fabrics, this bibshort has a built in UV protection and uses an elastic interface called LIEGE WOMEN for padding (which actually has been tested and validated during Sverigeloppet).

The pad design is thicker towards the front to provide better support when a rider spends a lot of time leaned forward, typically a tempo ride. And if it provides a good cushion for the 1850km Sverigeloppet race, which it apperently did, then I’m sure the quality over distance is outstanding. It’s certainly worked well for me in the South of France. It also has central padding, especially designed to help support female anatomy. This is something that lots of women struggle with when riding, and I’m happy to come over a brand that has taken this into consideration!

The bib material is panelled and well thought out, using a soft but technical lycra and sits perfectly against my body with just the right compression. The coolest thing with this short is definitively the 2 thigh pockets! They sit far away enough from the joint not to disturb, but still within reach.

So, what’s the verdict then? It is indeed very comfortable. It has been designed with female comfort in mind, and they have really managed to come up with something that I could say helps to minimize pain from too much riding. Well done Sigr.

I like these bibs, plain and simple. They’re well designed, well cut, well sewn and super comfortable. Right, that’s it – let’s go for coffee.

No seriously, what can I say; Swedish brand SIGR have really come up trumps with these RIKVÄG 92 Pro bib shorts; and yes, they have several pro standard features. First of all, the quality multidirectional and very string material – all 100% recycled I might add. Then, they’ve designed and cut this into lots and lots of flat lock stitched panels, giving a truly awesome fit with lots of compression. Then, they’ve used a super string mesh upper to aid air flow and moisture control, and finished the upper off with wide stretch fabric straps – also a favourite of mine.

If I could add 1 minor point, I’d personally have brought the wide stretch fabric straps down the front too, where they’ve blended it into the mesh.

There’s a radio pouch sewn into the back of the mesh, for all you racers, and the leg gripper cuffs are wide and super strong yet soft fabric, finished with comfortable gel patterning on the inside, meaning that the bibs stay in place and provide excellent compression. Thankfully though, it’s a high technicity multidirectional fabric across the RIKSVÄG bibs, meaning that when added to the exceptional Elastic Interface® Endurance Anatomic Road pad for men, you’ve got an awesome pair of cycling shorts for long hard rides. I’m a big fan of Elastic Interface pads and I’d recommend every cyclist at every level checking the pad brand, because this Italian brand make the very best. Trust me, you’ll notice the difference on long summer rides, as I’ve done whilst wearing the RIKSVÄG bibs.

The material has UV protection, and the overall black with limited and subtle logos means that these pro standard bibs will go with all of your jerseys. In terms of quality of design, finish and performance it’s a 9 out of 10, with just the minor point mentioned earlier regarding the fabric strap – a personal preference point.

There are certain brands within cycling that you instinctively know produce great quality clothing. They literally stake their very valuable and well earned reputations on the quality of their performance cycling gear – and Rosti from the north of Italy are one such brand. So, when the package arrived in late winter, containing their latest design for spring 2022, I smiled widely.

Rosti HYPNO Summer Jersey

Their HYPNO jersey carries the usual Rosti design credentials, and is like wearing a piece of modern art on fabric. Concentric circles cover the jersey in a hypnotic pattern, with a white background, so that taken as whole, the finished design is modern and chic and yet harps back to those heady days of the hip 1960s. If you’re looking for unique performance clothing, then Rosti is definitely the brand for you. I simply love their artwork. Anyway, to more technical things; how does the jersey stack up in terms of its technicity and performance.

On initial inspection, Rosti have used at least 4 different fabric types on the various parts of the jersey. In doing so, they’ve thought in detail about the body part being covered and how it both performs on the bike and how it needs protecting. For example, there’s a reasonably lightweight fabric chosen for the front, which is lightly perforated to aid air flow. However, the fabric weave and perforations are such that they still keep the cold winds at bay. Yes, it’s a light fabric, but this is a performance jersey. The high quality fabric is chosen to both keep winds out and allow your body to breath. The fabric chosen for the back of the jersey is lighter still, and has a more defined perforation, allowing your sweaty back to breath easily when riding. Then, down the sides of the jersey, Rosti have used a mesh style weave, super light and strong, allowing that extra air flow that hard working arm pits require.

The sleeved are made from a strong 4 way stretch lycra, with that necessary touch of compression. Overall, all of the panels on this stylish jersey are cut to form fit, using high quality multidirectional technical fabrics, meaning that you look and feel great wearing it. The jersey is finished off with a high cut collar, strong and good quality concealed zipper, and a wide elasticated and silicon gripper waist. The 3 rear pockets are strong and stretchy, and Rosti have added that necessary zipped pocket for keys.

Okay, that’s the design and technical detail out of the way, so let’s talk about the overall finishing. One of the great things about Rosti is their quality, and when you turn this jersey inside out, the seams and the stitching is truly superb. It looks like a high quality garment ought to look; it’s balanced, elegant, well thought out and is a jersey that works in harmony with your body. Add to this, the design and fabric technicity and you’ve got a great jersey. On the road it’s been super comfortable, close fitting and stylish, allowing free movement and with excellent airflow, meaning that I’ve been able to ride hard and not end up feeling sweaty and uncomfortable. Now it’s time to look at the shorts.

Rosti Pro 1 Bib Shorts

One aspect of Rosti bib shorts that I really like are the straps. There’s not fiddly and ultra thin and tight fabric straps, often found with other brands. These Rosti Duotone mesh braces are well thought out, made from high quality and strong, wide cut fabric and they sit on your shoulders softly and easily, leaving you feeling just right. They look like quality straps ought to look, they feel like quality straps ought to feel and they certainly are performance orientated and made to be completely comfortable. They’re strong and stretchy and they make you feel like a cyclist ought to feel when wrapped in lycra. And, Rosti have ensured this high quality Duotone fabric is cut to merge into the lower black fabric, with the open back strapping and lower back mesh giving the opportunity for excellent breathability.

The lower short areas are made from the Rosti Thunderbike fabric: 80% Polyammide and 20% Elastane, and are panelled to maximise fit, bonded and stitched together to be ergonomic and form fitting, due to the multi-directional fabric. The cut is designed for performance, meaning that the fabric has a reasonable compression feel to them too. Thunderbike fabric is a rubber polymer; more precisely, a fabric with high density bonds that reinforce its structure. These are a very modern and stylish shorts, and the simple black design means that they easily go with any of the jerseys from the Rosti range. At the thigh, Rosti have used a clean cut finish with an internal silicon gripper, keeping the look modern and maximising the performance feel of the shorts. In use they’re super comfortable on both long and mid-range rides, due to the Rosti Bormio® pad with recycled yarns, which is designed as being suitable for long distances and with a quick-drying 3D structure. It’s certainly a very comfortable pad on long and hilly days in the saddle.

Branding is minimal on the shorts, keeping them modern and stylish. When worn together with the new design Rosti HYPNO jersey, you’ll be well clothed in high quality performance cycling wear for spring and summer.

Rosti Shape Summer Gloves

We finished the outfit off with the Rosti Shape summer gloves. It’s a close fitting performance glove, made from BOOST® strong multi-directional fabric, with excellent padding on the palms. The gloves certainly provide great comfort all day long, due to the softness and strength of the fabric. The inner fabric of the SHAPE gloves is adherent, the thicker palm padding guarantees better protection of the palm of the hand nerves.

The gloves have tabs to help pull them on and off – often a tricky aspect of close fitting summer gloves. VEGA HYPNO Summer Socks

Listen, I know that some people have a foot fetish – that’s their thing and I’m fine with that. I don’t, but I do have a thing for good socks. Coming from a mountain background, I know the value of looking after your feet. After all, it’s the hardest working part of your body and it deserves the best – whether that be custom fitted shoes or the very best socks. And this is truly relevant here, because for a general cycle clothing brand, the latest range of socks from Rosti is truly awesome. They’re ultra high quality and performance, and so well made. Yes, I know that I’ve mentioned the Rosti design ethos before, but these latest socks from this growing Italian brand are almost works of art themselves.

By using the multi-directional lycra fabric on the leg of the sock, Rosti achieve several things. From a performance perspective, the socks are soft, very light and extremely aerodynamic. The upper sock adheres perfectly to the ankle and calf without any rubber band, simply using the fabric and small silicon grippers at the internal edge, promoting blood circulation and minimizing friction with the air. The special fabric is made of 79% polyester and 21% elastane, and keeps the ankle dry and fresh too. Best of all, it feels superb on and stays neatly in place, giving you a gentle compression feel. And, because it’s a lycra based fabric, Rosti can print their awesome designs directly onto the fabric, meaning that you look chic and stylish.

Looking at the lower parts of the sock: the heel, gusset, instep, sole and toe, are skilfully merged into the upper lycra, whilst themselves being a standard woven fabric, designed with specific weaves in the various areas of the foot. There’s good reinforcement on the heel and toe, a string ankle cycle and sole, and a very breathable weave pattern across the bridge and instep areas. It’s certainly a high quality sock, well made and will last a long time. Feet do so much work for the cyclist and socks are not simply an afterthought. Rosti know this and have produced a truly superb summer sock for cyclists, and one that also carries the brand design ethos with pride.

Summary

It’s not often that I’m completely blown away with the quality, design and performance of a brands new cycling clothing. However, everything about this HYPNO outfit from Italian brand Rosti is superb. The level of detail and finishing is excellent, the performance on the bike is super comfortable and form fitting, meaning that you as the cyclist can simply concentrate on the ride. There’s a uniqueness about Rosti cycling clothing, and as we’re all unique too, why not wrap yourself in Italian styling this spring and summer, and take a look yourself at Rosti. The quality of fabrics, finishing and design certainly won’t disappoint and you’ll benefit from the added performance that this modern brand sews into every garment.

Bib Shorts for Colder Weather

‘Bib shorts in autumn and winter’ I hear you exclaim! Yes, because Italian brand Alé have worked out that riders often need performance shorts for those colder days, and they’ve used their knowledge and know how to produce the Klimatik K-TOUR shorts.

Thermal and elastic, the K-TOUR bibshort is designed for riding in particularly humid mid-winter days, and is also really useful in autumn and in early spring. It’s a perfect kit item for the serious cyclist. And, you can also add warmers if you’re not from the north… we’re used to the cold

Performance Fit

The ergonomic cuts perfectly fit to the body like a second skin, with excellent panelling and high quality stretch fabrics which are also thermal and very warm indeed. The front and the back part are structured to adhere to the body while riding, and Alé have used a heavier fabric weave at the front, keeping chilled winds at bay. The Alé DWR treatment really does protects you against light rain and dirt too, as the weather here in the Yorkshire Dales has tested. Best of all, these performance shorts handle breathability and moisture control superbly, even in humid or wet conditions. Water and rain simply beads off the treated technical surface of the cloth, meaning that you stay dry. They just feel good, very warm and super fitting – and they’re stylish too, with subtle elements of trim keeping that modern Italian look.

And, if you want to cover the legs and keep them warm too, for those really cold days, you can pair the shorts with the Alé K-Atmo Legwarmers, which is produced in the same thermal material, to increase the protection.

Ultimate Performance Design & Fabrics

Talking about the legs, on the leg hem of these shorts, Alé have used a wide and very strong elasticated fabric, with silicon elements on the inside of the hem, ensuring that the shorts stay firmly in place. I really like the degree of compression provided, both by this wide leg hem, and by the excellent upper thigh fabric. The straps are made from a similarly strong and wide elastic, and sit very comfortably and unrestrictive across the shoulders. You hardly notice them on rides, which for me is the ultimate compliment for straps on bib shorts. And, to aid breathability and moisture control, they’re finished off with a strong mesh like fabric at the back and on the lower abdomen area, all around the short. Finally, Alé have chosen a very technical performance pad, with excellent moisture control properties and superb comfort when working hard. They’re literally a joy to behold on the bike, keeping you comfortable and able to concentrate solely on working hard.

I’ve been using these K-TOUR bib shorts alongside the Alé K-TOUR jersey, on road rides and in the cold garage on the Elite rollers and Suito interactive trainer on those really cold autumn days. They’ve been superb at providing the required technicity and performance needed from my cycle clothing when the temperature is that bit cooler. For me, they’re already a firm favourite and a necessary addition to the wardrobe for any keen cyclist. Well done Alé.

First of all, let’s get to the bottom of things -Literally!

Have you ever thought about the connection to your bike and ultimately the road? You might say it’s’ your cleats, it might be your gloves or it could be your shoes. How many times do you consider what’s going on in the bum department? How many times do you feel that tell-tale ache coming on and as a man that dull numbness starting which forces you up and out of the saddle to bring some life back to that area of darkness.

Well, it’s something you really need to get right and to put some thought into. However, I can help you out with that and narrow down your choices somewhat. It’s something called ‘Elastic Interface’. Never heard of it? They are the people who make the very best cycling pads on the market. The best cycling apparel manufacturers use them in all the best products. Next time you check out a pair of cycling shorts or leggings check the manufacturer of the pad first. If it’s ‘Elastic Interface’ you are probably onto a winner. Now for the rest of these excellent shorts…

Performance Design for Riding

So, when Sigr sent me their new Riksvag 92 Cargo shorts, I dived straight into the packaging to check out the pad. They do not let you down! They’ve opted for the Elastic Interface Anatomic Road pad for men. Especially engineered for a males anatomy and boy does it work well.

I am a triathlete by sport, so to finally see a set of general cycling bib shorts with pockets on the thighs is superb. Why hasn’t this been done before? Expertly crafted mesh panels, spread across your outer thigh allow you to store gels, bars or other small items in safety. You don’t have to fish around in rear pockets any more. For those with shoulder issues or age related mobility issues it’s genius.

The Riksvag bib shorts are my favourite shorts to date. Inspired by a lonely mountain road in Sweden these are super comfortable, built to last, robustly sewn together and with more than enough support high into the belly area to stop that uncomfortable hang-over found in other bibs. Chest and shoulder straps are meshed for breathability. There’s deep thigh silicone grippers which do a great job of preventing the legs riding up and chaffing.

Ultimate Comfort

Sigr states I will feel like a ‘Cycle Pro’ in these shorts and they’re quite correct. These are the most comfortable and well thought out bibs that I’ve ever tested. Made from 100% recycled fibre that builds upon the Sigr foundation for ethical style, they’re constructed differently for men and women, which highlights their strive towards cycling equality. These bibs arealso resistant to oil and grease, and have built-in UV protection – not often needed inthe Yorkshire Dales

They are not cheap though, coming in at the higher end of the market for a pair, but I can tell you these bib shorts are worth every penny (or cent). They will soon be your go to pair of cycling shorts for some time to come, and as I mentioned at the beginning – they will care for that area of darkness like nothing else.

BIEHLER SIGNATURE BIB SHORTS

A good jersey needs great bibs, and these Signature shorts from Biehler are a worthy ambassador product for this high end performance brand.

Made from a special woven fabric, using ecologically friendly production, they’re super light, super well cut and super fitting, maximising your performance. Biehler say that they’re 35% lighter than average bibs, and yes, they do seem to be so, and yet they retain strength and movement whilst still giving superb compression and muscle support, due to multi-dimensional elastic movement that Biehler have woven into the fabric. They’re a bib short made for long and arduous riding, with a B-Skyved long-distance chamois sewn in to keep you comfortable on those tough kilometres.

Biehler work closely with top pro riders and these shorts have been designed to build in feedback, producing an improved pro-team cut. The fit and design is quite long on the thigh, which we like, as it gives the muscles that added performance protection. The shorts are edged with a wide elasticated fabric band, that’s super strong and holds this in place superbly. The material is also surprisingly tough, as Biehler have also thought about abrasion resistance. After all, we cyclists often need that! And, just in case the sun shines, the material also gives uv-protection 50+.

Beau and I both tested individual pairs of the Signature shorts, with our Elite Triathlete giving them a full workout. Riding in all weathers, they proved themselves worthy of the ‘quick drying’ tag given by Biehler. Breathability and odours are also dealt with, due to the combination of the new lightweight material weave and the antibacterial properties of the lycra. They also have a really soft feel to the fabric against the skin.

One area where we feel the bib could be improved is with the straps. Biehler have gone for a high quality mesh/ webbing style upper, and the standard industry elasticated strapping, whereas we feel that at this price point they’d have benefitted from wide elasticated fabric bib straps that sit more softly across the shoulders. It’s a small and somewhat picky point for what is ultimately a great bib short. On a very positive note regarding the straps; they’re cut and sewn into the lower areas and panelling to maximise strength and fitting. Sizing is excellent too and they’re simply a super comfortable bib short on long days, meaning that you can relax and concentrate on riding.

We’ve used these shorts on both road and mountain bike, and on every ride they’ve been absolutely awesome and performed as you’d expect from a high end brand short. Anyway, they come in a variety of block colour tones, and are stylishly finished off with the Beihler logo and branding on the sides and in the terraband style leg hems, with some nice reflective touches too. They’re a great performance bib short that could easily become a favourite and will definitely be a first choice for riders who value high quality, technicity and high performance. Biehler continue to develop and innovate with their products, and these Signature bib shorts are a worthy product to carry the carry the brand name forward.
