As a pro level mountain bike racer, with experience competing on the roads, too, cycling kit performance and comfort is crucial to me. It has to stop the elements in winter, allow me a good degree of movement, and give me that extra security that comes with high-performance and comfortable winter cycling clothing. Thankfully, working closely with many of the world’s top cycle teams in the pro peloton, Italian brand Alé understand this, and their latest Fondo & Clima Warm range of men’s winter cycle clothing carries forward their adherence to excellence. Testing Ale is always reassuring, reminding me what good cycle clothing should be.
Alé Pragma Jacket Fondo 3.0

In terms of a winter cycle clothing choice, the Pragma Jacket Fondo 3.0, together with the Clima Warm Plus 2.0 tights and the Klimatik shoe covers, create a well-balanced winter cycling setup designed for low temperatures and variable conditions. It should be perfect for winter cycling here in Transylvania – so, let’s see!

When it comes to training, there aren’t many moments for you to catch your breath. After that well-deserved month off following a full season, comes… winter. The weather takes no prisoners, either, and you have to be dedicated – which is why good kit is critical. There are days when it’s not safe to head out on the road, but there are also days when… by having the right equipment and clothing, it makes the difference.

Ale Pragma Fondo 3.0 Jacket

For me, the Ale Pragma Fondo 3.0 jacket stands out through a successful combination of protection and breathability, offering enough warmth for winter rides without feeling bulky or restrictive. Well, yes that’s the technical description – but what does it feel like in real conditions and a cold winter in Romania? It actually does what it says; made from high-performance and multi-stretch fabrics, this well-cut jacket is close enough a fit to feel right, but with the benefit of allowing me freedom of movement on the bike. The fabric is not too heavy and not too light, ensuring that warmth and breathability is regulated, whilst the coating also beads a good degree of the moisture if required.

Yes, when the going gets tough, the innovative and technical membrane provide good wind protection and repels light rain, while the thermal interior helps maintain a stable body temperature even on descents or in exposed areas. All of this means that I remain smiling and comfort, helping me to maintain that all-important performance.

Finally, then, the fit of this stylish winter cycling jersey is sporty and performance-oriented, typical for Alé, sitting nicely on the bike without flapping at speed, and the eucalyptus color adds a modern and elegant look that is easy to match with other kit pieces. It has the usual 3 pockets at the back, allowing plenty of on-the-ride storage, a good high collar to keep the wind out and away from my neck, and a strong zip that seems as though it will last the test of time – always useful on winter clothing. Do I like it and did it work well – absolutely. And, it carries forward the Alé badge of quality and styling that should last you for a long time.

Alé Clima Warm Plus 2.0

The Alé Clima Warm Plus 2.0 winter bib tights perfectly complement the Pragma jacket, delivering a high level of thermal insulation for the lower body and making them ideal for long rides in cold weather – viola! When the temperatures drop here in Romania, that really is important to me; but these bibs did their job and kept me warm and comfortable.

We all know the importance of this, alongside the close but unrestricted fit, in this case due to Alé using high-quality multi-stretch fabric with good compression, and choosing the panelling in a body-mapping way. The fabric is as I mentioned, stretchy in the right way, yet still having reasonable compression. In use, the bibs feel relaxed and comfortable, adapting well to the riding position, and protecting efficiently against cold and wind without restricting movement. At the same time, the breathability is good enough to prevent overheating during sustained efforts. All good for a hard winter training ride, then!

When it comes to pads, whether you’re a pro rider or a weekend warrior, quality is the difference between a successful ride and pain. Fortunately, the material and structure used by Alé is up to expectations and I didn’t experience any issues. One thing I appreciate about all Alé pants are the braces. I have never tested a pair of pants that I didn’t like the braces on. The craftsmanship and the fact that they fit perfectly on the body are a real plus.

With the Clima Warm model, Alé managed to create perfect equipment for cold days, but he didn’t skimp on quality either, and you don’t feel like you’re overdressed.

Alé Klimatik shoe covers

The Alé Klimatik shoe covers are for me, an essential part of this winter setup, providing excellent protection against cold and moisture, and keeping the feet warm and dry even in wet or rainy conditions. In terms of the fit, they fit well over cycling shoes, feature a solid and well thought out and tough construction, and add an extra layer of safety thanks to reflective details. The zipper is always an area of weakness for overshoes. Alé have thought about this and spent time selecting a tough zipper, which works will with the stretch waterproof fabric.

Overall, this latest Alé kit is an excellent choice for those cyclists who train or ride long distances in winter. It offers you that all-important balance between comfort, protection, and a premium look, without major compromises in performance.

Is it something that I would choose myself – absolutely, and the remainder of this winter will only clarify this for me.

ALÉ Cold Weather Clothing – Wrapped in Warmth & Style

Italian cycle clothing brand, ALÉ, are annoying good at producing cycling performance wear. ‘Why annoying’ you may ask – well, it’s quite simple; they’re so good at what they do, that each year, the kit simply gets better, and I am forced to change my thoughts on my own favourite jacket for days on the bike. Whilst yes, I test lots of clothing brands, I must concede that I’m drawn to the Alè® quality, style and performance. Their current Klimatik clothing ranges are no exception to this, and there’s an obvious drip down from the work that Alè® do with the world’s top teams and riders, meaning that we ordinary mortals get to ride in comfort, wrapped in Alè® warmth and style.

Performance Jackets with Attitude

We were sent a selection of long-sleeved jackets and bib tights to test this year. For the menswear range, I tested the Alè® K-TORNADO 2.0, water repellent Long Sleeve jacket, and the stylishly modern PR-S MAGNETE jacket, which is designed for a temperature range of 2° to 12°. It’s the ideal choice for cyclists venturing into the cold, from autumn right through to some of the colder days of mid-spring – now, that’s a great value jacket for anyone.

PR-S MAGNETE Jacket

According to ALÉ, this jacket is a smart garment, with an inner front vest, which helps to manage temperature, and which allows you to ride without worrying about the weather conditions. Thanks to the body mapping system, all of the fabrics have been strategically positioned to conform to specific needs, ensuring that each part of your body receives the right amount of protection from the weather – no more, no less than is required. The jacket is designed to literally wrap you and your form neatly, giving you a sporty look whilst allowing you excellent movement. Add to this, the fabric has the special Event® membrane, making the garment extremely soft and elastic and ensuring that it keeps its breathable and water-repellent properties, and you’ve got a very high-quality technical product. Here in the Yorkshire Dales, the water repellency is vital for most of the year, and technical cycling jackets that do as they’re supposed to do, are always welcome.

Fabric Technology for Rider Comfort

The special DWR water-repellent treatment chosen by Alè® gives you excellent air circulation when working hard on the hills and prevents overheating during training. And remember that stylish extra inner vest – it takes away shivering effect during descents or less demanding stages. With a technical lighter under-arm fabric also aiding ventilation, you’ve got a very comfortable and happy cyclist.

The collar is high, but not restrictive, and there’s a nice addition of an elasticated fabric strip inside of the zip, ensuring that winds don’t work their way through. When you turn the jacket ‘inside out’ and check out the finishing, it’s obvious that Alè® have taken their time to think about the various fabric choices and their uses, with the body mapping being visible. The overall finishing is top quality, and the jacket has strong and wide cuffs that sit comfortably, and 3 super-strong pockets (including an extra zipped pocket) for all those necessary goodies.

Style is Never Optional

The colour choices are simple and modern and are overlaid with exclusive graphics that are designed to fully embody the contemporary and technical Alè® look. Yes, this cold weather clothing essential from Italy has the perfect blend of performance and style, with comfort sewn in. It’s nicely finished off at the waist with my own personal favourite – a well cut and strong wide elasticated waistband, that adds to the overall look. Yes, the PR-S MAGNETE jacket is quite simply a very nice, high-performance garment that oozes lots of Italian style, and which will perform well for you, over several cold seasons.

KLIMATIK K-TORNADO 2.0 – Water repellent Long Sleeve Jacket

Looking next at the Klimatik K-Tornado 2.0, it’s another high-quality performance garment from Italy, as expected. It’s always nice when you can rely on a brand, and Alè® do just this – they give you confidence, which you need in the cold weather. Let’s see how this stylish jacket is put together then. It’s designed for cycling when the temperature is between 6° and 12°, again making it ideal at many times, if you happen to live in northern Europe .

It’s made from the usual technical fabrics, with superb multi-directional stretch and also has a fleecy feel to the inside, helping to keep you warm. The 3 layer fabric, with EVENT membrane and DWR treatment on the entire surface of the jacket, guarantees high breathability and lightness as well as excellent thermal insulation even in wet conditions. For all these features this jacket falls into the “long season” category for garments developed for intermediate climatic conditions as mentioned earlier – that means, anytime that it’s cold.

It’s stylishly cut to fit to form, meaning that if you look good, then this jacket will too. Stay off the cakes and stay on the pedals and you’ll be fine.

What I really like, is that Alè® have used a light mesh fabric behind the 3 rear pockets, that really do help with air circulation when you’re working hard. The waist has a really good quality fabric and silicone finish, and the soft mesh on the inside of the collar ensures that you’re comfortable around the neck. The design is simple and stylish, with reflective logos, and it’s simply a really nice, really warm and comfortable, good value jacket for those cold days on your bike.

Cycling Bib Tights by Alè®

Alè® are renowned for their performance bib tights, seriously. Yes, they don’t just make one simple design and splash different colours and names onto it, like too many brands. The very clever design team actually analyse cyclists in all environments and weathers, and produce a variety of options, ensuring that everyone has the right product for their own cycling needs. We looked at the Alè® CLIMA WARM PLUS tights and the PR-R MILD tights, which taken together, are the ideal 2 pairs to own for a wide range of conditions.

Alè® PR-R MILD

The PR-R MILD bib tights are, as the name suggests, designed to be used in slightly milder conditions – 6° to 17°, and when there’s maybe a cold rainstorm possible. Straight away, what you notice on these tights, is the extremely high-quality bib straps, mesh back and high-performance chamois pad. Along with the waterproof ankle cuff, it’s these well thought out touches that separate Alè® from their competitors; and, at this price point, you’re unlikely to the same quality finishes elsewhere. The fabric is styled to be functional and essential, with its minimal and ergonomic cuts, it can be worn during mid-Winter season and right through to mid-spring. The area above knees is embellished by a small, sublimated insert. The stretchy SuperRoubaix microfiber fabric has a slight compression effect that massages the muscle during the ride, and fits close the body and stretches easily, making them super comfortable all day long.

They’re quite simply, a very nice and very comfortable pair of bib tights, and they have definitely worked a treat and kept me warm in the harsh weather of the Yorkshire Dales and North Yorks Moors.

CLIMA WARM PLUS Bib tights

Finally, it’s onto the CLIMA WARM PLUS tights, which cater for a slightly damper ride. Designed to be the warmest and most protective bibs in the REV-1 series, they’re highly insulating, and they maintain a constant cycle of heat generation (up to 1°C) to actively keep you warm, and to reduce heat loss and stabilize a consistent temperature. They’re suggested to be worn between zero degrees and 10°, and they have all the usual quality finishes that you’d expect from one of the world’s top cycle clothing companies. Best of all, the B-HOT THERMO DWR and W-WIND 3L SHIELD DWR fabrics are treated and really do protect you from the rain, as I can testify from rides here in the Yorkshire Dales. They’re comfortable and super stylish, performance tights, which utilise all the Alè® body mapping expertise, to maximise your ride comfort – and we really like them.

The one thing that cyclists cannot rely on is the weather. Thankfully Alè® know this and they also know that we’re crazy enough to cycle outside on all manner of cold days, and through the rain and wind. That’s why they take so much time and effort to produce so many options for us cray cyclists! The selection that Larisa and I have been testing are most certainly of the highest quality, for finish, comfort, style and performance; and they’ll keep you smiling on those long, cold cycling miles.

Prendas Ciclismo Cold Weather Clothing

Prendas describe this cycle clothing as midseason, however, it’s far more than that, due not only to global warming, but also due to the quality of the fabrics used. Yes, we’ve been using this and testing it during autumn, but we’ll also be keeping it out during those winter days when the sun still shows itself, and also when we want to ride hard.

Winter Rides Require Good Kit

One of my own favourite rides here in Yorkshire, takes in the locally famous ‘Mickley Bank’ and the climb up Warthermarske from Masham and Swinton Castle. It’s a ride where you can stop off for a coffee at Johnny Baghdad’s cafe in Masham’s historic market place, as the weekend cyclists gather from all around. It’s imperative to have kit that performs well on rides like this, out into the isolated country roads, and which then also looks stylish at the obligatory coffee stop, and this Prendas CC long sleeved jersey and bib tights are excellent. Add to this, their amazing price point for the quality, and we’d go as far as saying that you’d be hard-pushed to find anything better in that range.

Prendas CC LS Jersey

The jersey is a race cut design, and one area that does need consideration is their sizing. It’s truly cut to Italian size options, meaning that you’ll need to go up a size from your normal choices, if you want the same fit. Once you’ve overcome that hurdle, then the race fit design is superb, with a warm Roubaix multidirectional fabric that wraps you in comfort and allows good freedom of movement. One particularly good aspect of close fitting but having good freedom of movement, is that on rides like the Mickley Bank and Warthermarske circuit, you can simply concentrate on standing up and powering away, as you keep on ascending.

The jersey also has a nice, high quality and well designed, wide cut elasticated and perforated fabric band at the front waist area, holding things in place. For the price point, this is a real bonus, usually only found on higher priced garments. It works so much better and looks so much more stylish than a simple fabric and silicon banded waist. The cuffs are wide cut and strong, and there’s also a high cut collar, which keep the wind at bay. The panelling design of the jersey and the excellent multidirectional stretch means that it fits to form and feels great when riding. It’s truly unrestricting and simply sits nicely against the body, making you feel like you want to ride. Best of all, the 3 rear pockets are strong and deep, keeping things from moving around as you work hard; and there’s a waterproof zipped pocket too for your cash and keys.

Prendas CC Bib Tights

Moving on to the matching bib tights, what we look for at this time of year, and in these tough Dales rides, is a bib tight that fits like a second skin, doesn’t sag and has a reasonable compression. Then it has to be finished off with good, wide fabric straps and a mesh upper. Prendas have ensured that their Prendas CC tights are made from Miti Stelvio, which is internally fleeced and fast wicking to keep you warm and reasonably dry whatever the weather. They’re not waterproof, but they do actually help to wick your own moisture away from you on tough rides.

Their popular Pro Race chamois ensures comfort over even the longest of rides, and it performed really well on our test routes, especially the climbs, making these bib tights perfect to help keep you warm and comfortable the road, throughout the cold winter months. The tights are finished off with good ankle zips, asking them easy to slip on and off, and they have adequate compression. Best of all, they actually stay in place, like a warm second skin, which is always good for race ready winter tights.

The design of both the Prendas CC jersey and bibs tights is spot on too, being a stylish navy blue, with coloured horizontal stripes to reflect the three grand tours ( pink, yellow, red). It’s all stylishly done and really makes these a very chic and modern choice for winter riding.

Quality & Style can be Affordable

As I drop down the tight twisting lanes from the Yorkshire Dales, and back into historic Ripon, I’m really pleased with the Prendas cold weather clothing, and pleasantly surprised at the very high quality in fabrics and finishing at this price point. It’s certainly a brand to take a look at and which will look after you and your finances this season, And, in the current climate, that’s got to be a good thing – well done Prendas.

If you’re looking for good value, reliable and comfortable winter cycling clothing, then Shutt Velo Rapide may be just what you’re looking for. this young U.K. based clothing brand keep things simple, but with a drive to ensure that simple is effective. Their latest offerings for winter are testament to their quality and style, and are targeted at a price point that makes them accessible for all. Now, what’s not to like about that.

First off all, I ride mainly in the North Yorks Moors and the Yorkshire Dales National Parks, and kit that looks fancy but which doesn’t really perform, is easily identified. Rapha might suit you in the Home Counties, but here in the wilds of North Yorkshire our kit has to first of all perform well, then be great value for money; and in truth, that’s even more important these days, with a dramatic cost of living crises that none of us can ignore. It’s unfair and unnecessary to show you kit that costs the earth, and in truth, which really isn’t worth paying the extra for.

On the other hand, it’s always a pleasure to test kit from a brand like Shutt Velo, where they’ve clearly taken time to think about what’s needed, how it should perform and how it should look. Everything about their latest autumn-winter jersey is just kind of sensible.

Tourmalet Navy, LS Jersey

Designed with a stylish but simple, navy blue palette, this modern cut jersey is a great choice for long rides in the intermittent conditions of winter. Whilst it’s not waterproof, nor made from the heaviest of fabrics, it is well thought out, with a race fit design, using a high quality Roubaix fabric that stretches to fit you perfectly, and allows that necessary freedom of movement on the bike. It’s a thermal long sleeved jersey, handmade in Italy from lightweight and resilient MITI Thermal Green Super Roubaix®, which is internally fleeced and fast wicking to keep you warm and dry whatever the weather. Best of all, it actually works, and when I’ve been riding here in the cold Yorkshire winds, it’s kept them at bay and kept me comfortable. The fabric weight seems heavier where needed, and overall, the design and cut is very sporting, and feels like a warm second skin. It’s one of those jerseys that you don’t feel you’re wearing, due to the anatomical and athletic cut and the superb stretch fabric, that simply clings to you in a relaxing way.

According to Shutt Velo Rapide, their Thermal Green is a high-end Bluesign certified fabric, brush back warp knit fabric made with recycled polyamide and Eco-Smart elastane. What we know is that it’s a quality fabric that works, and it’s super comfortable.the sleeves are cut just right, and finished nicely with narrow cuffs. At the waist, Shutt have used my own personal favourite hem, a good quality wide and elasticated fabric band that adds to the modern look and holds things in place perfectly. The collar is more of a sporting design, and whilst not overly high, it does it’s job as expected. Importantly, the rear pockets and deep and made from a strong and heavy fabric, with a good elasticated edging to keep things firmly in place. There’s no zipped pocket for keys, but overall, it’s a minor point on what is otherwise a top notch winter cycling choice for all riders.

Navy Tourmalet Bib Tights

Bib tights are always a mixed bag. Often too long, sagging behind the knees or simply too heavy, it’s always nice to find a pair that once on, simply feels nice and makes you want to go cycling. It’s easy to forget that you need to dress for your actual activity level, and in practice that means wearing kit that will keep you warm… but not too warm. These race cut bib tights from Shutt Velo Rapide are, like their matching jersey, a perfect choice for a winter spin.

The Super Roubaix thermal fabric is of a good quality, and definitely works well in the northern hills, whilst still allowing your body to breath and not overheat. The panelling is well designed too, so that they fit where they touch, and the rest is simply up to you. There’s not a great deal of compression, but it’s not really needed. The fit is close, without being tight or restrictive, allowing good movement. I do really like the wide fabric straps, that sit nicely over the shoulders. The ankles are finished with a simple silicon gel, and the pad is an Italian made, multi-density foam and gel pad that seems to work well in long days out in the hills, which is always a good test.

Summary

Shutt Velo Rapide are a brand that we’ve been keen to test for some time. They’re a group of real cyclists, who instinctively know what’s necessary and at what price point. With this Tourmalet winter jersey and bib tights, they’ve hit the mark, producing a stylish and modern look that dies it’s job really well. The overall finishing is top quality, and at it’s a winter outfit that any cyclist would be happy to have in their wardrobe. In fact, it’s kind of like that ‘little black number’ that suits every party. The Shutt Velo Rapide Tourmalet winter jersey and tights are in that VW Golf category – simply designed, high quality and performance orientated, at a price point that everyone can enjoy.

Imagine a pair of winter bib tights that are so well thought out that they ooze quality and look so technical and stylish that you simply can’t wait to ride in them. Too often, winter bib tights serve no purpose other than wrapping and constricting you like a dummy. Alé don’t think like this; instead they want every garment to carry their signature of style and quality.

Each Alé garment is created to be a highly technical item of cycle clothing, designed to do a specific job and to do it well. Yes, I like these winter bibs a lot and simply because of this: they’re really comfortable to wear, they fit where they should and they keep the weather at bay. Best of all though, they make this mediocre cyclist look as though I know what I’m doing, being chic and stylish and fitting in a tailored kind of way. There’s no hiding in these Alé Nordik Thermowind DWR Bib Tights and whilst they’re designed for the coldest and harshest of conditions, the styling is still superb and is cut with specific panelling in key areas, maximising movement whilst creating a truly winter race fit garment.

The body mapping is of course designed to fit closely, with just the right compression where needed and it achieves this. For ultimate technicity, the 3 layer Windtex softshell construction fabric has a soft and insulated inner, making them supremely comfortable, with a waterproofing membrane sandwiched between the inner and the water-resistant outer. The hydrophilic inner works superbly at retaining the body heat, whilst wicking away the sweat efficiently and providing the ultimate in temperature regulation and ride comfort.

Looking at the various panels in more detail, to the lower leg around ankle area, these Nordik bibs have tightly elasticated waterproof and thermotaped cuffs to prevent rain and road spray from entering, whith a light thermal fabric lining on the inside. Around the knee area are ergonomic body mapped panels with a light but slightly heavier stretch fabric, again chosen for warmth and its 4 way stretch qualities which keep it close to the body without restricting necessary movement in this key area. The design and quality of the strong elasticated fabric is so good that there’s none of the usual sagging that can often be found on winter tights.

Heavier fabrics are used for strength and warmth in upper leg and lower waist areas, then combined with lighter and super stretchy fabrics above the waist. This leads to extra wide and strong bib straps that sit so comfortably on the shoulders, with a super light and stretchy polka dot style mesh material to the back, completing the bibs and aiding ventilation and breathability. Yes, they fit where they touch and leave little room for cakes

Ale’s highly regarded Double Ergo HF chamois is chosen to ensure your ride comfort. The honeycombe design has a Bi-component surface in the front and lateral parts in the groin, ensuring that the high-density 120 kg foam covers the necessary contact point on the saddle, whilst breathability is optimised. It’s then significantly lighter and slimmer at the edges, designed to keep you comfortable but not feel over bulky. Stitching and finishing on all the internal panels and the pad is excellent, certainly keeping me comfortable on long and chilly winter rides with a few steep climbs thrown in.

Using the bibs on the roads of North Yorkshire, they fit superbly, with no movement. They’re tight where they need to be around the ankles, close fitting and still flexible around the knees due to the elasticated design. They’ve kept out wind and rain and made sure that I can simply concentrate on riding. I love the close fit, whichalso allows maximum movement. The upper areas are strong and super warm and comfortable, with all elements kept out. The pad performs excellently and I’m chmois cream free, especially on the longer hilly rides. Thankfully, the bibs come up around the chest to a reasonable level and are thinner here, meaning that the jersey or jacket sits neatly on top without bulk.

North Yorkshire winters are unrelenting and harsh. However, all of the technical fabrics used by Alé in these Nordick winter tights ooze quality, which when coupled with the superb finishing means that Alé have a tough and technically excellent winter bib tight that simply performs as intended and which will look good and last you for years. They’re not the cheapest, but they certainly have a claim to be among the very best and the level of detail means that they’re worth every penny.
