Cradling you in comfort

The price of cycling gear is high these days – yes, let’s admit the obvious. Thankfully though, you can still get safety, comfort, style and performance for a great price – with the Rudy Project Skudo cycling helmet, for road and gravel. Yes, it is quite simply a cycling helmet that when asked about it, the team here who’ve been sharing use during the review period, described it as being ‘bloody fantastic!’ Well, they used even more powerful phrases – but we won’t print those!

Okay then; so, what were the key points that the team liked about the Skudo, and which made it, in their eyes, one of the best cycling helmets that you can buy for the money. First of all, the shape and adjustability of the helmet cradle got a big thumbs up. Due to the adjustable retention system, the helmet can be made to fit a variety of head shapes, providing a super comfortable helmet all ride long. Often, helmet cradle shapes can be too round or too oval.

However, the cradle on the Rudy Project Skudo seems to fit neatly in the middle and has ample adjustability. It uses their latest fully adjustable miniaturized RSR11 S retention system, coupled with the new proprietary 3D AirFrame Band for improved ventilation and comfort. This cradle wraps comfortably around the rear of the head, and is super stable. It’s not fiddly to adjust and feels like it will last a long time. It’s a simple twist dial and opens and closes the attached adjustable retention system, wrapping the padded cradle around your head shape.

Don’t let a helmet bug you

The Bug Stop netting inside the front of the helmet is spot on – just ask Ben, who’s had too many wasp incursions on rides; and who loves the Skudo for its ability to stop the critters in their flight path, as they head – pardon the pun – towards those moments of rider chaos, dancing around inside the helmet cradle. The numerous and well-placed air vents allow the wind to be drawn in and across the head, as the air leaves you via the four large vents to the rear, helping to keep your head cool. And, for when you’re working super hard, the padding on the cradle helps to capture the moisture, and is removal for washing when required.
High-quality & high on style

In-Mold Technology for a perfect finish

Looking at some cycle helmet brands that are supposed to be high-end, the styling and finishing often let them down. However, Rudy Project have been ensuring excellence and innovation for generations. Their Skudo helmet, albeit mid-range – carries the Rudy Project badge of high-end finishing and styling. The molding between the ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) and Polycarbonate is refined and smooth, using the Rudy Project In-Mold technology, which allows them to cast the external polycarbonate outer shell directly during the injection stage of the expandable polystyrene (EPS) impact-absorbing foam. The result is a much more rigid structure which is knock-resistant and extremely light, allowing for better ventilation system. Looking closely at the helmet, the quality of the outer Polycarbonate is a match for any helmet at this price point. In terms of weight, the whole package comes in at a mere 270 gramme too. It’s not a bulky helmet at all. It simply sits quite neatly and looks really stylish. The design is functional, modern and simple.

There’s no MiPS liner on the helmet, as Rudy Project employ their own Rotational Impact Testing tech and precision engineering in their cycling helmet ranges. Yes, they’re tested to the highest industry standards, and whilst it’s not an area that we tested here, we’d happily trust Rudy Project should the need arise.

Strap in and enjoy the ride

The helmet strapping can often be an issue with some helmets. Strapping can be flimsy and not easily adjusted, and can frequently catch on the ears. Thankfully, the Rudy Project Skudo strapping is well-made and of the high-quality that we’ve come to expect from this world tour level brand. The trickle-down tech from their global experience is evident. The helmet sits nicely across the forehead and doesn’t interfere with sunglasses, allowing that room necessary to get the air flowing across the lenses. Better still, the Rudy Project Tralyx sunglasses fit nicely onto the helmet when you stop for refreshments! Yes, that’s an important style issue .

You’ve probably gathered that we really liked testing this road cycling helmet – we did. And, whilst the Rudy Project Skudo isn’t as light, nor as technically advanced at their Rebel, road cycling helmet or as stylish as the Rudy Project Egos used by the world tour riders, it does have some of the trickle-down tech, and sits neatly in the mid-range road cycling helmet choices, being in our minds, one of the best road cycling helmets that you will see at this price-point. It’s light, comfortable, well-designed and well-made, and will look after you for many rides to come.

Rudy Project is renowned for producing great cycling safety products. They’ve been doing so for a long time, from their base in Italy, and are trusted across the global cycling community. Their latest Egos ‘road cycling helmet’ typifies their adherence to excellence, and has that unique Italian styling too. When it arrived here for testing, I immediately liked the aesthetics – which as you’ll understand, is an important part of the equation for cyclists looking at new products.

Rudy project have set out to bring riders that golden trilogy of improved performance, safety and comfort, delivering it to professional levels, and using everything that they’ve learnt from working with the world’s best riders in the pro peloton. The Egos helmet cut its teeth on the Tour de France, with Bahrain Victorious, before the humble cyclists such as you and I got to benefit from all that research and design work; and yes, there’s a lot that goes into the design of cycling helmet, if you want safety, comfort and performance in equal measure.

Get with the flow

The placement of the air vents, and how many to design and where to site them. How the air is pulled in, flows across the head and leaves the helmet. These are all key aspects of the design, and they’re something that Rudy Project have got just right with the Egos cycling helmet. The multitude of vents at the front are stylish and draw the air in well, whilst the large vents at the back help the air to exit the helmet, without themselves looking bulky as some helmet brands do. Having worn this helmet throughout the warmest months of summer, I can say that the airflow is spot on, keeping me comfortable under the sun. Rudy Project spends considerable time on design, and the inner shell of the Egos is distinguished by its main features, and the DUAL DENSITY technology, which provides the helmet with a double function. The shape enhances ventilation at the top of the head, guaranteeing superb rider comfort. The top part, on the other hand, is characterized by a smoother density for great impact absorption and helmet weight reduction.

Comfort, performance and style in perfect harmony

Inside of the helmet, the Egos is fitted with the RSR 11 anti-slip system for an optimal fit, and it also thanks to a wraparound structure and micrometric fit for height and width. It’s not just marketing either, as the helmet fit is super comfortable. It’s one of those rare cycling helmets that you almost forget you’re wearing – and that has to be a great recommendation for comfort. The AIRFRAME BAND, a hidden flap on the front of the helmet that is in contact with the forehead, to channel airflow to the inside of the helmet, works to enhance that all-important ventilation and cooling of the head.

At the important end, the fastening and adjustment; the strap fastening has been designed for quick and safe release, thanks to a practical and safe magnetic FIDLOCK attachment system. It works really well and is easy to lock and unlock, even with gloved hands and on colder days. Alongside the high-quality and suer soft, padded inner cradle, they’ve placed some mesh to help keep the insects at bay too. If you’ve ever had a wasp enter your cycling helmet – which I have – you’ll know how welcome this additional mesh is.

Quality that comes as standard

Best of all, it’s all designed and created in such a high quality package too – it really is. It looks and feels like it ought to feel for a cycling helmet at this price point. The inner cradle cushioning comes away with ease for washing, meaning that it won’t become smelly either!

The helmet colour options are as you’d expect – stylish, modern, simple and with just the right degree of logo additions. We tested the steel blue helmet, which had subtle pink pastel in some areas, which nicely matched our Pedalnorth kit and logo – style is never optional with Italian design! What more can I say. Thankfully, I haven’t tested the Egos helmet in anger, and hope not to do so. I am however happy to say that the Rudy Project Egos has become my first choice of road cycling helmet, in a short space of time – and that’s a praiseworthy recommendation. It’s most definitely kit that we like. It’s well worth the investment, and will keep you stylishly safe and comfortable for many miles to come.

Yes, Italian brand, Rudy Project announced recently, the renewal of its long-term collaboration with Team Bahrain Victorious as the official helmet and eyewear partner through to 2026. This year, 2024, will mark the eighth season together, providing the team with some of the most innovative products in the world of cycling. To date, Rudy Project is one of the longest-standing sponsors of the Bahraini formation, supporting them since their debut in the World Tour circuit.

The team, making its debut in Australia at the Tour Down Under, which kicked off with the traditional “Down Under Classic” criterium on Saturday, January 13, will be equipped with new glasses and helmets, produced in the white, blue, and gold colors characterizing the team’s new, elegant livery. Time to take a closer look then.

THE GLASSES AND HELMETS

The glasses used by the Bahrain champions are the Kelion and Astral models, made with a Rilsan Clear frame, a bio-plastic derived 45% from plants grown by certified farmers in Gujarat, India.
Meticulously designed to provide performance, adaptability, and comfort, and compatible with an optical insert, the Kelion features a cylindrical and wraparound lens that offers superior protection and an unobstructed field of vision.

The Astral, equally ergonomic, is characterized by its lightness and style. Three helmets will be provided to the team, and used as appropriate to the necessary race conditions.

The Egos, designed for the hottest days: a model with an innovative internal structure, designed to improve ventilation while ensuring excellent shock absorption thanks to the special DUAL DENSITY TECHNOLOGY.

The Nytron, an aerodynamic helmet with a compact and lightweight design, utilizes a combination of air intakes and internal channels to optimise ventilation and reduce head’s heating, enhancing the rider’s performance.

Finally, we have the Nytron Pro, an evolution of the basic NYTRON model, offers an unmatched balance between safety, comfort, and performance thanks to a detailed and meticulous analysis of aerodynamics, increasing the aerodynamic efficiency of the product itself through a more “closed” shape.

Met Rivale Helmet

There’s a plethora of cycling helmets on the market today, and it becomes a minefield to know own which one to buy. It’s even trickier if you ride several bike genres, and have to make a choice between specific styles or a multi-use lid. Italian brand Met know this and have put their pro peloton support and science to good use, bringing the developments to the average rider.

Met also use the superior ‘in mold’ construction for the Rivale, producing a stronger helmet, enabling them to utilise far larger vents, without detracting from safety. In tests, impacts are shown to spread over the whole helmet, reducing the risk of injury to the rider – a definite plus point, and the style of the outer shell is also quite cool. Weighing in at 230 grammes, it’s a lightweight lid and is easily adjustable on the fly with the ‘Safe-T fit system’ which adjusts the cradle all around the head and not just at the back. Along with the lightweight straps, it looks and feels like a quality helmet should.

The aerodynamics of the Rivale helmets have been extensively tested by Met, producing a helmet that they say saves the rider 3 watts of power. In layman’s terms, for us it did fit extremely well, especially at the front and over the top edge of glasses, allowing air to be sucked in through the well positioned vents and keeping the head cool. Through a long hot summer of riding, my head stayed comfortable and my hair didn’t suffer too much of the usual wild ‘helmet hair’ scenario.

Adding to the comfort, the Coolmax anti-allergenic interior pads are washable and soak up moisture extremely well; and on the safety front, there’s also the ability to clip on a rear red light to improve your visibility to other road users. Having seen this light tested by Met in early developments, we really liked this addition, which stops you having to fasten a light elsewhere on the lid.

Overall then, Met have produced a great road cycling helmet, and one that sits nicely within the mid-price range, but with useful elements of quality drawn from their pro team developments. It’s a helmet that will suit the keen enthusiast and the club racer, keeping you safe and stylish on the roads. And, if it’s good enough for Manx speedster Mark Cavendish, it’ll be good enough for you – well done Met, we like it.
