With over 33 years of working in dynamic environments, being a Critical Incident Commander in policing, and a former climbing instructor, I have a rounded experience of unfortunate events in the mountains. Nobody plans for an issue to happen when you head for the hills. However, the nature of the unexpected is that you should always expect the unexpected – and plan for this. Safety is paramount and can easily become a faded concept, when nature and the elements are against you.

That’s why we were really excited when our friends at Vitamina C in Turin asked us if we’d like to test out the new Camelbak mountain pack, which comes fitted with exciting new technologies. Yes. CamelBak’s New H.A.W.G. 20 offers outdoor adventure seekers, the World’s First MTB Pack with RECCO® Technology; the same tech used by mountain rescue teams to locate people who are either lost or injured – or both – in the mountains. From my experience, commanding serious mountain incidents, every second is vital; and so it was an obvious choice to ask our own mountain expert, Teo, if she would take on the challenge of testing the new Camelbak Hawg in the wild and remote Carpathian Mountains of Romania. WE wanted to see if this exciting new backpack for bikers and hikers, really could help to locate you in times of trouble… it’s over to Teo, then!

When you’re out there in the wild, enjoying the majestic beauty of the mountains, there’s always that little thought in the back of your mind about “what if?” What if an unexpected avalanche rolls through? Or while enjoying a fantastic hike in the mountains, a thick, swirling fog descends. One minute you can see the path clearly, the next, it’s like someone’s pulled a grey blanket over everything? Or what if you just get lost in a really tricky spot? That’s where RECCO technology steps in, like a quiet guardian angel.

Think of it this way: RECCO is like having a tiny, super-dependable friend stitched right into your jacket or gear. This little friend doesn’t need batteries or anything fancy; it just patiently waits. What’s the new Hawg 20 like

The “new” CamelBak HAWG 20 (often specifically the HAWG Pro 20) is designed to be a workhorse for long days on the trails, especially for mountain biking, but it’s also very suitable for hiking and other outdoor activities where you need ample hydration and gear storage. It’s gotten some significant updates, focusing on comfort, organization, and durability.

One key feature that makes it stand out is the Air Support Pro Back Panel. It’s designed with “body mapping technology” to strategically ventilate the areas of your back that generate the most heat. It often features a curved, rigid plate with a mesh overlay that creates an air gap between your back and the pack, promoting airflow and reducing sweatiness, which makes it great especially during summer days! The shoulder straps are also made with a lightweight and breathable mesh, contributing to overall comfort and preventing hot spots.

The Camelbak HAWG 20 has comes with an ample storage and organization, with a 20L Capacity. There are also multiple compartments and pockets for organized storage.

Another great feature is its durable construction: Made with robust materials, often including recycled Cordura RE/COR fabric, for long-lasting performance in rugged conditions. It usually has a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating, though a separate rain cover might be recommended for heavy downpours.

There is also a variety of specific use features, such as Helmet Carry, Impact Protection Ready, E-Bike Battery Sleeve, RECCO® Technology. The new CamelBak HAWG 20 is a highly capable and well-thought-out hydration pack designed for adventurers who need substantial water capacity, organized gear storage, and high levels of comfort and breathability, especially for activities like mountain biking and day hiking. The addition of RECCO technology is a significant safety upgrade.

Testing time in the hills

Testing the CamelBak HAWG 20 in the Romanian hills gave me a fantastic real-world assessment of its capabilities.

Before getting to the hills, I filled it with what I’d actually carry on a typical day hike or mountain bike ride in the Romanian hills. Therefore, I made sure to full-fill the 3L Crux reservoir, take some snacks, extra layers (rain jacket, fleece), a first aid kit and navigation tools (fully charged phone).

Right at the start, I spent some time adjusting all the straps – shoulder straps, sternum strap, and especially the hip belt. The HAWG Pro 20 often has a very effective hip belt designed to take the majority of the weight. I ensured it sit comfortably over my iliac crests (hip bones). I also cinched the load lifters (straps connecting the top of the shoulder straps to the top of the pack) to bring the pack closer to my body, ideally forming a 45-degree angle.

As I started the climb, I paid close attention to the Air Support Pro Back Panel. It genuinely reduced sweat buildup on my back and I really felt the air circulating through the “body-mapped” channels. On steeper climbs, the pack stayed put and felt stable, with the weight distributed to my hips. Considering the hydration access, I could easily grab the bite valve, take a sip, and re-secure it with the magnetic tube trap without breaking my stride or looking down. On rocky, rootsy, or loose downhill sections common in the Romanian hills, the pack shift independently of my body. The hip belt and compression straps kept it securely in place, preventing it from throwing me off balance.

Also, I could easily access snacks from the hip belt pockets or a phone from a side pocket without having to stop and take the pack off. I took a moment to test the RECCO Reflector with a specialized detector, as it provides a background sense of security, especially if you’re in a more remote area of the Romanian hills where conditions can change rapidly, as Fagaras Mountains are. It went really well and quick, which is perfect for a search in the mountain hills.

Final thoughts

The CamelBak HAWG 20 sounds like a truly impressive backpack, especially for the active outdoor enthusiast in Romania. My final thoughts are overwhelmingly positive.

Overall, the CamelBak HAWG 20 appears to be a top-tier choice for serious mountain bikers and hikers. The focus on the Air Support Pro Back Panel and 3D Vent Mesh Harness suggests that CamelBak has prioritized long-haul comfort and breathability. This is incredibly important in the varied and often strenuous terrain of the Romanian hills, where ascents can lead to significant sweating. Good ventilation means less discomfort and a lower risk of chilling.

The thoughtful organization, including hip belt pockets, internal tool roll, and potentially an e-bike battery sleeve, shows it’s designed by people who understand the needs of outdoor users. The use of recycled Cordura RE/COR fabric signals a commitment to both robustness and sustainability, which is always a welcome combination..

The inclusion of RECCO technology on the CamelBak HAWG 20 is a significant and commendable step forward for outdoor safety, particularly for a mountain biking pack. The beauty of RECCO is its simplicity and reliability. It’s a passive reflector, meaning it requires no batteries, no charging, no activation, and no maintenance. You literally put on your backpack, and you’re immediately more “searchable” to professional rescue teams. This is a crucial advantage, especially if you’re injured, disoriented by fog (as discussed!), or in an emergency where traditional electronic devices might fail or be forgotten. Knowing that your backpack has this integrated technology provides an invaluable layer of peace of mind. While you hope to never need it, it’s a silent assurance that if the worst happens, professional rescuers have an enhanced tool to help locate you. This is especially pertinent for those venturing into more remote or challenging parts of the Romanian wilderness.

Therefore, the CamelBak HAWG 20 appears to be an exceptionally well-designed and feature-rich backpack for serious outdoor pursuits. Its core functionalities – comfort, hydration, and organization – are clearly well-executed. However, it’s the integration of the RECCO system that truly elevates this pack, offering a cutting-edge, passive safety measure that could genuinely make a difference in a critical situation. It’s a smart investment for anyone who values both performance and an enhanced safety margin in their outdoor adventures in Romania and beyond.

I’ve always loved mtb rides in the mountains of Transylvania, but I also like to explore other parts of my country too. For example, Baiu Mountains with altitudes of 1700-1900 m, located in Prahova county. Transbai is an off-road trail and it is 38 kilometers long and will connect the cities of Azuga and Busteni to Valea Doftanei. In these kind of adventures, it is important to have an adequate physical condition and proper nutrition. So no more waiting – I took my mtb to ride the Baiu’s trails. The route is quite accessible, it has steep ascents and descents, some even technical; but overall it is indeed enjoyable and the landscape is amazing!

With me I had the Camelbak Lobo backpack on test. It’s a cute small ‘must have’ backpack for long mtb rides in the mountains. When the temperatures rise, getting enough to drink and hydration is important, whether you’re playing sports or just sitting in the sun – and it’s critical for your heart health. Keeping the body hydrated helps the heart more easily pump blood through the blood vessels to the muscles. Furthermore, us women, often like to multitask, and this pack has incredible features designed to fit MTB, hike, run and bike lifestyle – it’s multi-sport, which I love. It’s designed with a tailored fit and an S-curved shoulder harness, contoured specifically to fit a woman’s body. So it’s perfect for outdoor sport activities and for us women.

The Lobo is a similar pack to the MULE in it’s base design, but smaller and less advanced in construction. It’s simple in its use and lower down the range, missing the reinforced material of the MULE. The material is more soft and spongy, without the same level of protection as the Luxe, but is ideal for short 3 or 4 hours on the bike or hills. Due to the Air Support technology the panel from the back has body mapping design to allow optimum ventilation on the hottest areas of the back. Has 3 secure pockets and I can easily fit in enough gear for a short to medium ride on the bike, or a short hike (6 litre storage capacity). It has space for snacks and a rain jacket or vest – those important things that make a ride safe and keep you smiling.

The shoulder straps are the same as the Luxe and Mule, perfectly adequate and comfortable for the size and use of the Lobo, and it’s perfect for me, when I just want to go out for a few hours and I don’t want to carry too much. Ventilated harness ensures lasting breathability for the long summer rides. Around the waist and chest it has a thin simple band which helps the pack to stay in place while moving. Also the chest strap is clamped on 2 rails which you can adjust up or down to fit your exact body shape, which is again important to women.

On the sides it has 2 mesh pockets with straps, in which you can clip your helmet on or put a jacket in. Both logos are reflective for more visibility and the pack is made from recycled materials with safer chemicals with a carefully designed shape to ensure kilometers of comfortable exciting adventures. It has a magnetic tube trap that keeps the tube secure and accessible when you need it. The Camelbak blader material is safe BPA/BPS/BPF Free, for perserving the water in it’s natural form and holds 2 litres of fluid, meaning that I’ll stay hydrated for sure. There you go – that’s the tech data out of the way – now, let’s ride.

Camelbak have a great range of packs for all mountian activities. The problem is – which one to choose . For me, the Lobo is the perfect hydration pack for short tripsout to the mountains, where I need a light and flexible pack, but I also need to carry the essential items. It’s also extremely comfortable, especially for women, which not all brands think about – we’re built different and we need brands to consider this.

All in all it is indeed a great pack; comfortable, versatile, practicle and light (the pack itself has only 500 grams). So that being said, put on your CamelBak Lobo, hop on your mtb and enjoy the hills that nature offers us while being healthy and properly hydrated.

The ‘Go To’ Mountain Pack

Having used a Camelbak Mule as the pack of choice for many years, I was intrigued to see the new Hawg Pro pack. At the editors launch, the brand guys went over it in detail and it looked awesome, but only wearing it in anger on the hills can produce a true test. First of all then, why has it always been my pack of choice: it’s robust, truly robust. It’s been thrown all over the place, taken out in all weather, been overpacked to bursting and yet it still loves me and looks after me. It deserves a rest, so bring on the new Hawg from Camelbak! Larisa was introduced to the Camelbak mtb range by friends at Vitamina C PR from Italy, testing the Women’s Luxe, which is the ladies specific version of the leading Mule pack, and it’s quickly become her ‘go to’ pack too.

Air Support Back Panel & Ample Storage

The first thing that you notice is the Air Support Pro Back Panel. It’s a well constructed and strong 3D Vent mesh panel, that lifts the pack away from your back, allowing maximum airflow and reducing that horrible sweaty back syndrome. Using it extensively this summer, it’s been awesome at keeping me dry and comfortable. The body mapping means that it simply fits superbly, and the new chest straps adjust up,and down too, giving a perfect fit, that fastens with a magnetic clip – very useful with gloves.

Inside of the 20 litre sack, there’s an array of small pockets with zipped fastening, allowing you to keep important items close to hand, and ample room for spares, jacket and even spare clothes for a lightweight expedition. The two main compartments are extremely voluminous and a definite increase on my older Mule model. Materials are strong, well sewn, and we both love the additional zipped pocket on the top, which is a great place for regularly used items, like an energy bar or even your phone.

Designed For Real Adventurers

We really love the open compartment at the rear, and use it all the time on bike and hike, as a quick grab area for a jacket or an extra bottle on an all day epic where water points are limited.

The chest straps are wide and comfortable and at the waist, the new addition of the two decent sized zipped pouches are a godsend. Pop your phone, money for coffee and a few energy bars in here and you’re away. Of course, it’s a Camelbak, and the 100 litre water reservoir is superb. The new flow control valve is excellent and easy to turn on and off, and super easy to take apart and clean. All the parts come apart easily, and the plastic is produced using CamelBak’s expertise to ensure that you only taste your drink.

Camelbak Women’s Luxe

Not only is this an awesome pack, that follows on the trend from the original Camelbak Mule, but there’s also now a ladies specific version. It’s about time too, as it’s so obvious that we’re built differently and need a little bit of consideration . The Women’s Luxe fills the gap that has existed for too long, and shares all the necessary great attributes of the rest of the range. It’s just the right size for me, giving lots of room for a jacket and snacks and tools etc on a long day in the hills.

The Women’s Luxe has a slightly smaller strap design, and it’s modelled to sit more comfortably on the shoulders and across the chest area. It has all the same necessary compartments, and the same super cool mesh back, to help to keep me cool on the bike. Using body mapping, the CamelBak women’s backpack uses all of their knowledge and experience and technology, for a tailored women’s-specific fit and improved cooling. Best of all, it works and it’s my favourite pack too . Yes, it looks like both Robert and I are big fans of the new range from Camelbak, which carries forward the Mule reputation, into the future and onto the trails.

A Legendary Pack

The previous Camelbak Mule was a legendary pack, but we’ve quickly fallen in love with the latest iteration from this world leading brand. The new Camelbak Hawg is a well designed and well made pack, that has all you need and helps you to stay well equipped in the hills. Using it in the National Parks here in the U.K., and using the Luxe in the mountains of Transylvania and Romania, it’s been truly amazing to see how Camelbak have developed the earlier and legendary Mule pack. Add to this that both of us reviewing these packs, in mens and ladies versions, come from a climbing and mountain background, and you’ll understand that a pack has to perform for us – and it does. The Camelbak Hawg Pro and the Women’s Luxe Pack excel in every area, and they’re botha packs that’ll give you years of comfortable use on your mountain adventures.

What are you packing…

Any mountain biking pack needs to first of all perform as a pack on the hills. After all, it’s pointless carrying anything on a bike that doesn’t perform in its basic function. Thankfully, the Deuter Flyt 14 performs superbly in its intended function as a mountain backpack or for use when taking to the gravel bike. We tested it in the Lake District National Park, with several members of our team just to make sure. It’s also superbly made and oozes a quality that is unsurpassed by any other brand. It really is a fantastic rucksack, made from the very finest materials and with every small detail beautifully sewn, meaning that it should last you for years. Time then to see how it performs on the bike.

In terms of usage, the Deuter Flyt 14 is aimed at the XC / trail rider who fancies an enduro adventurers the hills now and then, but is ideal for the gravel rider too. It comes with the Deuter TÜV/GS-certified back protector which is easy to remove when not needed, but which will save you serious injury in the event of a fall. Add to this, the superb padding and ventilation provided by the Deuter Airstream back system, which ensures that you won’t get a sweaty back, and you’re already confident in the safety and comfort qualities of this stylish pack. The strapping system is well thought out and finished to the highest quality, using the very best fabrics. The shoulder straps are wide and strong, forgoing unnecessary bulk, with good padding and a strong mesh inner finish, aiding wicking.

Support & Design

Deuter have added hook and eye fastenings to each shoulder strap, to hold a hydration bladder tube, and there’s a hidden bladder tube hole under a subtly placed cover at the top of the pack. Inside that main compartment, Deuter have placed a strong elasticated pouch to hold the bladder itself. I quite like that a bladder isn’t actually provided, as in more of a bottle drinker, but having the option is useful. The chest strap on the Deuter Flyt 14 is probably the strongest on any pack I’ve seen, and is easily adjustable for height positioning. It’s a good clip fastening across the sternum / chest, and on this point, it’s an area where Deuter could have used a magnetic fastener to help gloved hands in colder weather. Just a small point, it what is overall a superb strap and fastening system by Deuter.

Waist straps on mountain and mountain biking back packs can be truly awful. Not so on the Flyt 14. The strength and quality of materials and finishing on the Deuter hipfins on this pack are class leading, and by far exceeds many of his competitors, being well made, well padded and super comfy when pulling the pack into the body for stability on the move. The pack stays nicely in place as you sail across the twists and bumps of the trails. There’s also a well made zipped pouch on each side of the waist straps, with a heavy stretch fabric, meaning that it’ll take lots of goodies for quick access and look after them well. I’ve easily fitted a phone and snacks into these pouches and been able to retrieve them on the move. Adjustability of the pack is easy on the fly, in those moments when you just need a tweak for comfort.

Strength & Usability

The pack material is Deuter’s 210D PA, 100D PA High Tenacity fabric, which is abrasion resistent and will will last a long time. It’s strong and yet surpisingly light, with the pack coming in at only 1.1kg. To the rear of the backpack Deuter have placed useful helmet straps, which I’ve actually used, just to make sure that they do serve a purpose – which they do. Side pockets will take a small water bottle, but I would have personally liked an increased bottle storage size here. Deuter have used a four way stretch strong mesh style fabric, but it is limiting. On a positive note, the side pockets will take things like gloves easily and provide a stable base for storing away walking poles if needed.

Having used the pack in rain and windy conditions, it’s reasonably waterproof, but Deuter have also added a hidden hi-vis rain cover too, which we found useful but not always necessary, due to the general weatherproof qualities of the pack.

Storage & Accessibility

In terms of storage space and accessibility, the Flyt 14 has 2 main zipped compartment areas, with several elasticated internal pockets and sleeve storage areas in each, including a good zipped compartment inside the main area for valuables. The Fly 14 will easily carry enough clothing and kit for a mini adventure in the hills for a few days, if you’re staying in mountain lodges. And, for the really adventurous, it’ll also carry a light summer bivouac with ease. There’s a really handy and securely hidden, lower zipped side pouch, where you can keep those really important items like your wallet or passport if travelling – oh, and it even has a sunglasses holder on the straps!

Overall Performance

We’ve tested the Deuter Flyt 14 extensively during summer, autumn and winter this year, and it’s always come up trumps and left us smiling. Buying a good quality backpack can be expensive, so it needs to fit your particular lifestyle and activities in the hills. The Flyt 14 is a jack of all trades and master of quite a few. It truly is a great all round choice for the multi-discipline mountain athlete. The style and quality of finish is world leading, and on the bike it remains stable and comfortable on the hardest of trails, providing ample storage and easy access. Its carrying capacity is vast and there’s enough storage areas to keep items separate and not bouncing around on the bike or hike. If you’re looking for along term investment do it all mid sized back pack for your adventures on the bike and elsewhere, this well priced Deuter Flyt 14 should be top of your list, and will no doubt accompany you for many years to come.

In Camelbak’s marketing material, they say that the Rogue lightweight pack is everything that you crave for on the everyday trail, by being: minimal, durable, cool and comfortable. They sent one to us here at Pedalnorth.com, in a lovely teal colour for us to try out and see if their marketing spin is true. It certainly looked the part on first impressions.

At Pedalnorth.com we spend a lot of time really getting to grips with products that we’re sent to test. We use them in various ways, test them in various conditions and activities, wash them, and generally give them a real life bashing about. That’s because you will do the same, either intentionally or otherwise. Most products are treated to a rough life over the time you own them and we want to make sure that our reviews reflect that. I’ve been using the Camelbak Rogue light in various situations, including: mountain biking, running, trail running, hiking and even long casual dog walks.

The Rogue lightweight pack is Camelbak’s minimalistic take on a hydration bladder pack that will afford you some convenient and clever storage capacity at the same time. It’s a new design that reflects their work with athletes and their desire to stay ahead of the competition . Lightweight it most certainly is, at 400gms on my scales. Pack material is durable with a ‘ripstop’ type cross weave, stitching is solid and the stretch material is also good quality. This pack is striped back to the bare essentials and in doing so gives you a decent weight saving over other packs in this segment. In fact wearing this pack on your back you would hardly notice it’s there. The ‘Air Support’ back foam and meshing does a great job at providing both comfort by moulding to your back shape and channelling sweat away. The shoulder straps are made of an open mesh for excellent ventilation and have just enough adjustment plus it fastens across the chest again with just adjustment. However my only real criticism of this product sits here.

The chest strap is set up for customers who like their water nozzle and hose on the right shoulder strap. The right sided chest strap with hose clip can detach and does appear to fit for left sided users but I couldn’t seem to reattach the straps on my test pack. It would be much easier for Camelbak to provide hose clips on both sides and for £70 it’s a glaringly obvious omission that could be easily resolved by Camelbak.

There’s 4 storage compartments (3 with zips), which provide ample storage for on the hoof items, including the 2 litre fluid bladder. The front pocket even benefits from stretch material to the sides, giving this pocket the ability to increase in size. There’s also a couple of extra loops and clips for keys, and the ability to clip your helmet onto, which is a thoughtful touch and useful at cafe stops. An internal and stretchy band provides a snazzy holder for a small bike pump too. Finishing touches like the reflective logos and the high quality zip pulls, again mark Camelbak out from the crowd.

The provided bladder comes in the form of the 2 litre or 70oz tried and tested Camelbak ‘Crux’ reservoir. Found in lots of their packs, it really benefits from the extra large bite tube which helps deliver more liquid and seals to prevent dripping. The nozzle has an on and off lever to lock shut and can easily be used with one hand. The bladder is made with Camelbak’s ‘Hydroguard’ technology which helps prevent bacteria growth in the bladder and the tube but as good as that is, it shouldn’t stop normal cleaning after each use. The final point worth mentioning is the handle at the filling cap. This makes for a much easier filling experience at the tap and is a great touch. It’s just a shame this handle doesn’t benefit from an insert within the bladder compartment of the pack for this handle to nestle into and prevent the bladder from slouching in the pack.

Camelbak have been making hydration packs for years now and that shows in this quality product. Providing comfort, ventilation and clever storage that can hold way more than you think. It certainly fits into a range of activities and despite a couple of very minor niggles it should really be first on your wish list for a lightweight, fast moving hydration pack.
