Biehler is one of those cycling brands that are simply reliable. Their clothing range is of the highest quality and made with the very best fabrics, using their vast experience from the pro riders that Biehler work with.

The Supreme jersey is testament to their adherence to design and performance. It’s a race fit cut and uses the very best fabrics to keep it light and yet comfortable. As a summer jersey, Biehler have thought in some detail too, about the necessity to protect your skin, and the fabric is designed to withstand UV 50+. With the knowledge that we have these days regarding skin cancer, it’s a very welcome thought – well done Biehler.

Working hard on a bike does of course produce the body’s own moisture, which Biehler have thankfully also thought about. The unique structure of the antibacterial refined, light Microfresh material used on the front of the jersey guarantees excellent breathability and ensures that moisture is quickly wicked away to the outside to avoid heat build-up. It’s a lightweight mesh style fabric that is soft and very comfortable. The back of the jersey and the sleeves are a soft and slightly heavier fabric, all with 4 way stretch, so that it fits perfectly, making you comfortable but aero.

The waist has a very wide and very strong terraband elasticated hem, which truly is superb – even supreme, making sure that it sits comfortably and doesn’t move. The sleeves are finished with the same material, merged with half fabric, cut so that it sits softly on the arms. The collar is low cut for a modern and sporty look, and the 3 rear pockets are strong and well cut, allowing easy access. I love the soft feel of the fabric too. I’m terms of design, the modern Camou style comes in a variety of colours and looks amazing. To the front is the usual full length quality zipper and it’s all presented with a super modern design to keep you looking kind of stylish.

In use the jersey has been excellent excellent in all conditions, and dried out quickly when we were caught in rain.Both Beu and I have tested the jersey – not the same one – Biehler kindly sent two

When slightly damp it remained comfortable and well fitted and didn’t detract from performance. What our our overall thoughts then; both Beau and I think that this is a high quality and long lasting performance jersey that you’ll want to wear often. In fact, if Heineken made cycling jerseys, it would definitely look and perform like this.

Finding Adventure in Transylvania

This area of Transylvania is filled with beautiful villages and mountain meadows. The views are exceptional wherever you look, and the opportunities for rides seems endless. Nearby is the famous St. Ana Monastery, bathed in history amidst the mountains. This is a beautiful ride into the forested hills and mountains in the west of Romania, with Larisa Chinces.

Route Information

Stats: 65 km & 1466m

Refreshments & Where to Stay

Orsova has ample places to stay, with the excellent lakeside views too. Food is also easy to choose in the villages that you pass close by along the way, but do take supplies.

Character

This is a ride of climbs and descents on moderate trails, with excellent mountain meadows and views along the way. One to definitely enjoy with friends, and a great Transylvanian mountain bike route.

Route

It’s easiest to simply say ‘load the gpx file’ as this route weaves in so many places, that the gpx file will keep you on track. Take a map also, and remember that the gpx file was taken from an actual ride with Larisa, meaning that in one or two places, it leaves the route for a few yards, before returning and continuing.

It starts and finishes on tarmac, leading you off and upwards into the well signed tracks of the Romanian hills, with a great descent before you return to tarmac. Maybe a great route for a gravel bike…

The Jet is a biodegradable bottle from Italian brand Elite, with lots more innovation to its design

Looking across the water bottle range at Elite, we previously wrote about their award winning super lite Fly water bottle. This time we’re going to be telling you all about their Jet bottle, which takes a few of the advancements from the Fly and puts it into a more robust biodegrable bottle that’s suited for tougher riding environments.

One key aspect of this bottle and something that is key to Elite’s environmental production processes, is that this bottle will take less time to biodegrade if composted in waste desposal centers – and in a world where plastic is a big issue, this has to be a winning formula for the future. The Jet bottle is a robust item though and very firm to feel. There’s nothing flimsy about this bottle, and yet it’s also got a really good flow system, meaning that you get the fluid you need easily and no unwanted drips.

The Jet has the same high-flow valve system as the Elite Fly bottle, but in a sturdier and more robust form, whilst the design itself is sleek and sporty. The bottle is also dishwasher proof, meaning that it’s easy to keep clean. Nobody likes those smelly bottles in the cupboard, where your drinks eventually taste rancid. Elite have tackled this by producing a bottle that you can simply pop into a dishwasher and use again without any aftertaste. The innovative ‘push-pull’ nozzle simply clips off from the cap opening and comes apart so that you can easily give it a thorough clean. It’s a single rubber nozzle and has no fiddly parts to cause confusion or to lose.

The diameter of the opening, 74 mm, is smaller than many other bottles in the Elite range and the cap is also more tapered. It looks stylish and simple and the bottle comes in clear of black, or indeed in your own team custom design.

Out in the roads, safety has also been key to design and the technical side of this bottle. The Elite Jet shares the same ‘blow off’ cap as the Elite Fly, meaning that if the bottle is dropped on the road and driven over, the cap flies off and the bottle compresses. We didn’t test this aspect of the design, but we’re confident enough in our friends at Elite to know that it’s a fact It’s a bottle that feels comfortable and firm to hand and it does the job expected.

The Elite Jet comes in 4 sizes: 350, 550, 750 and 950 for those longer rides. The 550 bottle weighs in at only 77.5 g and is flexible enough to fit easily into the range of bottle cages from Elite, and indeed all modern cages. It’s hard to get too excited about water bottles. However, all of us have had annoying bottles that smell, leak, don’t wash easily and are too hard to squeeze or simply look bad on your bike – yes, style matters! Thankfully, Elite take hydration seriously, and so if you’re after a great bottle that’ll last a long time and do it’s job well, whilst also looking stylish on your bike, that the Elite Jet is just the bottle for you.

Larisa is testing out these technical rollers by Italian brand, Elite

I could not believe it when the boxes arrived from Elite. On a scale of 1 to 10, it was definitely 11 and I was elated. Writing for Pedalnorth, we work with lots of brands, but I’m really pleased and excited about the project with Elite. I have the top of the range Elite Nero rollers, which are fully interactive, and the Direto XR interactive trainer too. Having not used the rollers much before, I am going to try the Nero rollers first – plus, they look awesome

Set up is quite easy, and you need to register with the Elite app “My E-Training” and configure the rollers to the app. Once it’s set up, you can go to the options on the “My E-Training. “ creating a map route is easy and you’re soon ready to ride. In terms of the quality of the Elite Nero rollers, they exceed my expectations in every way and in every detail. The materials and everything are simply very well engineered and it looks like a quality product.

In use, the Nero rollers are truly amazing and unique, and the movement compensates for the motion of the rider, making it a whole new experience. They are super smooth and easy. So far, I’ve been using them not interactively, as I get used to using them and the motion itself. The rollers have a step that Elite have designed in helps you to get on and off easily.

Using the Nero rollers, its easier if you lose your balance, because of the 4 platforms underneath on which the rollers move – yes move! If you lose your balance, the rollers get you back on track immediately by compensating for your movement, as the rollers adjusts on the platforms. These extra stability platforms really help beginners, as the compensating motion helps keep them pedalling and not falling, ensuring that it’s much more easier for them to get used to them without mishaps! Having previously used non parabolic rollers, the Elite Nero rollers also helps by using a parabolic roller design, keeping you in the middle and safe, so for a beginner… and for me it is very useful. There’s so much thought gone into the design of the Nero and it shows in how easily it is and how addictive

I really do enjoy this alternative type of training on rollers, because it’s more challenging for me than sitting on a static trainer and it improves my balance control on the bike. It’s also good for training the core stabilization muscles. I’ve ridden on the Elite Nero rollers lots of times since the kit arrived for testing, and enjoyed it every time. When I have to train, I just put it in the spot I want to train, set it up very easily and quickly, get on it and voila! It’s just as easy as it sounds to store due to its folding properties too. I’m also pleased because when race season begins again, I can also put it in the car and transport it to use it for warmup before a race.

I’ll be using the Nero rollers interactively now that I’m getting used to them, so stay tuned for the next article in which I’m gonna talk about how to use it and how to connect it to the app.

CHASING A FIX IN LONDON
Robert takes a fast & furious ride around London, following a fixed gear

I’d better open up by saying that I wasn’t on a drug crazed trip in our capital city. No, I’d simply gone down to London to spend time with our son, a photographic artist who lives in the south of the city. Yes, a man after my own heart, whose apartment is filled with bikes and bike parts, all fixed gear machines, including a folding one! He has other bikes… numerous at the family home, but London is for riding real – and that means fixed gear.

I was a decent competitive sportsman in my youth, but he takes the skill level to new heights, track standing whilst spinning a basketball in one finger! Now I ask you this – what did you learn in lockdown

Anyway, it’s time to ride… or at least it was, and I’d brought my Bianchi road bike down, so that I at least had a chance to see which direction he’d ridden off in, as I was left in his wake.

Heading into London along the Old Kent Road, we diced with the traffic, my son on constant watch for me. Roles were reversed, as was the child and he without prompting, had his hawks eye carefully looking out for anything and everything. When another ignorant rider pressed too close, a fixed gear swerve was employed to make a statement. Kerbs were ridden up at critical points for safety and avoid the desperate danger at some junctions, and the odd, well… not so odd red light (or were they amber) was crossed, as I desperately pedalled to keep in his slipstream, whilst he pushed out more watts that a track rider on EPO.

We took juice breaks on the South Bank, at ‘Look Mum No Hands’ cafe and at the Barbican, one of our favourite places; and we sat by the Tate Modern, where he gave me fixed gear riding lessons, which I loved and yes, the world was good and life felt wonderful. However, by late afternoon and with Canary Wharf done too, I was a haggard and sweaty middle aged man and kindness stepped in as we took the DLR to Depford, shortening the ride home.

London is an amazing city to explore by bike. No, not the regular haunts, but the side streets and places where reality still lives, like Poplar and Lewisham and Brockley. And watching this amazing young man and his bike, there’s no better way to traverse it than by riding real – by getting your own London fix.

It takes you through magical forests and high into the mountains, with the wild and beautiful Romanian countryside surrounding you. I love exploring and riding in the hills here, and this route is a special one to share with you

Stats 25.44 km 904 metres

Refreshments & Where to Stay

Nearby historic Sibiu should always be the first choice for your base when riding here, as it has everything that you will need, including lots of accommodation options in this medieval city. Refreshments on the ride are obviously limited, so take plenty with you.

Character

A hard first half of the ride will take you up to the summit, with magical views along the way as you explore the countryside and mountain meadows of Transylvania. The second half of the ride is all about riding downhill and having lots of exciting fun.

The Timmelsjoch, known in Italy as the Passo del Rombo is a cycling route that looks a every inch a classic cycling route, weaving and twisting with a band of hairpins that will test the very best cyclists. This awesome Italian road cycling pass is a route that all cyclists should ride, because cycling the Italian Passes is a trip of a lifetime and the Timmelsjoch road cycling route has to be on your list of roads to ride.

**Climbing the Timmelsjoch (Passo del Rombo)**

A classic Italian road cycling route

The Timmelsjoch (Passo del Rombo) is an iconic road cycling route in Italy, and one of the most beautiful of Italian cycling routes. The road twists its way to the summit, testing every cyclist whilst providing awesome mountain views to drive you onwards and upwards to the summit.

Distance and Ascent: 63km and 2348 metres of ascent

Refreshments: Cafe possible at 12km and a selection of cafes available at the summit.

Timmelsjoch Pass - Route Details

Route

Starting from the mountain town of Santa Leonardo in Passeier, follow the SS44bs road which is signed for the Timmesljoch or Passo del Rombo. It’s a mere 30km of road cycling climbing for you – all upwards.
Timmelsjoch Hochalpenstraße will basically take you to the summit via a series of tight and steep twisting turns on this narrow mountain road. Some serious switchbacks begin at 7km, but help to ease the way up this awesome Italian cycling route, the Passo del Rombo.
This tree lined road continues, with odd breaks in the treeline and places to pullover and to enjoy the spectacular views. Along the way, cabins and other rest places provide the opportunity for refreshments on the way up or down.
By the 15km point, the tree lined mountain views still surround you, but havealso given way to distant views of the snow capped summits, and the climbing is relentless. Short cut through tunnels punctuate the road as it continues in the beautiful mountains.
At 21km the Albergo Hochfirst Gastof is both a welcome refreshment stop and a possible place to stay on the descent, if you want to make the most of the amazing views.
By 24km, of which there’s a thankfully reassuring sign at the roadside, the trees have gone and are far below you as the real switchbacks and final steep sections begin.
Finally the summit is reached and Rasthaus Timmelsjoch can provide well earned cake and coffee. Enjoy the views and ready yourself for an epic descent of 30km.
We varied the lower section of the descent. At the 52km point, at the small town, Comune de Moso in Passiria, by taking the road signed sharp right towards ‘Platt-Plata’, then riding along a series of quiet road that weave their way back to Santa Leonardo in Passeier. However, this final detour is a personal choice and you can alternatively stay on the origional route.

The Livigno Pass is a mountain pass in the Alps on the border between the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland and the Province of Sondrio in Italy. It’s one of the highest paved roads in Europe and it connects the Bernina Pass in Switzerland with Livigno in Italy. When you’re looking for a great road cycling route in Italy and a mountain pass cycling route, then the Livigno Pass should be on your list.

Every keen road cyclist should visit this amazing country, because road cycling the Italian Passes is a trip of a lifetime, and the Livigno Pass road cycling route should be on every cyclists tick list.

Climbing the Livigno Pass Cycling Route

This Italian road cycling classic route starts in the beautiful Italian mountain resort of Bormio, where you can stay over in a variety of accommodation choices. It’s a circuit route, which makes it easy in terms of the end of the ride, as you simply return to your hotel or lodging, change and then go and eat.

It’s a tough day cycling, so be prepared and take lots of water, gels and food, and a long sleeved jacket for if it turns cold. Please take care on the descent and don’t try to be a Strava hero.

Distance and Ascent: 123km and 2694 metres of ascent

Refreshments: Cafe possibilities on the way at villages.

Livigno Pass - Route Details

Route

1. This route heads out from Bormio on the SS301 minor road into the mountains. At 4.6km take the junction right onto the minor road ‘Via Degola’ as it takes you through tree lined mountains above a river.

2. At 7.3km in the village of Pedenosso, take the left hand of the two roads (almost straight on) towards Valdidentro.

3. At Valdidentro pick up the SS301 road again, staying on this to a summit at 23.5km by the Hotel Interalpen. 14 km of dscending are briefly interrupted early on, before this descent continues to Livigno and the base of the Livigno Pass itself.

4. At 37.3km turn left at the roundabout onto Via Florin, where the opportunity arises for coffee and refreshments before tackling the Livigno Pass itself. Now follow Via Forcola as the climbing begins in earnest. Intermitent tunnels and open mountain views now accompany you towards the Livigno Pass summit.

5. At 49.5km the border with Switzerland is reached along withthe summit. Best of all, there’s a whole lot of descending to do now and the opportunity once more for a refreshment break, as there’s a lot more cycling to do.

6. At 53km the road joins a junction with the Bernina Pass. Turn left here and continue downwards signed towards Tirano. We can visit St Moritz another day This road has sharp sweeping bemds and care should be taken on the descent.

7. The 33km descent concludes at Tirano and a more relaxed series of quiet narrow roads helps you avoid some traffic on the main SS38, before this has to be taken, along with sections of the quieter SS27 which avoid long tunnels, back to Bormio.

A beautiful road climb in the Italian mountains, that weaves its way to the top

The Colle Fauniera is a mountain pass in the Cottian Alps, Piedmont, northern Italy, located at 2,480+ m elevation. It’s one of the roughest of road surfaces, but still one of the greatest of Italian road cycling climbs, having a statue of the legendary Marco Pantani at the summit.

We set this as an all day cycling route in the Italian mountains, with a long climb and an epic descent. The route starts in the beautiful Italian town of Caraglio.

As this cycling route is close to the Italian French border, you can fly into Nice and stay in the city and take in some great cycling, before crossing the border into Italy and taking on this awesome Italian road cycling route, one of the great Italian passes. If you choose, you can book a few nights accommodation at nearby Cuneo, or at Caraglio itself, which whilst more limited,is a beautiful place to stay. Either way, you’ll have a brilliant day cycling in the Italian mountains and have tackled one the greatest road cycling climbs in the world.

Climbing the Colle della Fauniera Cycling Route

This Italian road cycling classic route starts in the beautiful mountain town of Caraglio, where the Giro d’Italia also started the route, before heading into the mountains on the narros and steep winding roads. It’s a long climb of some 35km to the summit, but there are a few lovely villages on the way, and an awesome descent afterwards.

It’s a tough day, so be prepared and take lots of water, gels and food, and a long sleeved jacket for if it turns cold. Please take care on the descent and don’t try to be a Strava hero.

Distance and Ascent: 88km and 2221 metres of ascent

Refreshments: Cafe possibilities on the way at villages. Demonte has lots of suitable refreshment options once you get back down. Caraglio has a few great lttle places to eat and drink at too.

Colle del Fauniera - Route Details

Route

1. This route heads out from the small mountain town of Caraglio. Take the SP23 road that climbs into the mountains towards Pradleves, which is reached at 12km.

2. Once through Pradleves the road begins to steepen and becomes quite narrow, so care should be taken regarding other traffic. Make sure that if riding in a group,you do not take over the width of the road.

3. At 14km the road becomes the SP112 and climbs steeply towards the village of Castelmagno at 20km, twisting and turning as you continue climbing, now on the SP333.

4. At 23.5km pass through Chiotti Sant’Anna then Chiappi, eventually reacing a small junction at 33km. This is the Colle D’Esischie and a climb for another day. Stay ahead for the Colle Del Fauniera, which is reached 1km later and which opens up beautiful mounatin views beside the statue to Italy’s great cycling hero – Marco Pantani.

5. Take care descending on the narrow road, as the surface is not always ideal. Descend through scenic villages, as you head down the valley towards the main highway at Demonte 58km. Now turn left onto the SS21 towards Castelletto. At 76km turn left on the SS23 towards Cervasca, now on flat and easy roads that lead you back to Caraglio and good Italian food.
