Cronos CR3 Boa Carbon Road Cycling Shoe
by Robert Thorpe, Executive Editor
When you think of Italian shoes, you instinctively think of style, and this is also true with cycling shoes. Cronos is a brand that’s becoming more widely known in Europe, as it grows in popularity at all levels, from the social cyclist, to the UCI Pro rider; and it’s easy to see why, when you look across their range. Here in the U.K., the specialist sports shoe fitting service, RXM Custom are the point of reference, supplying whatever shoe and size that your foot requires, and it was through David and RXM Custom that we tested the Cronos CR3 Carbon road shoe.
The first thing to note is how light the shoe is. Coming in at only 270g, it looks and feels sleek, being 30g lighter than the non-carbon CR3. If weight is a factor for you, it’s useful to know that there’s some savings to be had. The carbon sole on the CR3 is also super strong and rigid too, and transfers power well. Cronos have placed a rubber tip protection and a replaceable heel to the sole, make your shoes long lasting. We really like this design feature, as cycling shoes are a big outlay for an amateur leisure cyclist and this will definitely increase shoe life, keeping cyclists happy.
Over the period of the long term test here at Pedalnorth, it’s become a favourite, especially during indoor interactive training sessions, where pedal efficiency and power transfer is an optimum requirement. You can literally feel the way in which the foot works with the sole of the shoe, as the pedal action moves through its motion.
It’s also a very stable and close fitting shoe, whilst still having good width for the main part of the foot. I generally take a wide fitting shoe, but the standard fit CR3 is perfect on my feet. The Boa system at the upper part of the foot, works well with the two lower Velio fastening straps, to bring the leather around the foot and to hold it stable in use. Add to this the overlapping closure, which has strong elasticated fabric between leather bands, and a no-splipping inner lining in the heel, and you’ve got a shoe that stays put while you concentrate on creating power.
The leather upper is high quality and well stitched, with laser made ventilation holes to aid airflow for the hard working foot. Along with the Cronos designed Airflow System (tough weave mesh) on the top, which allows the foot perspiration out, keeping the insole dry in case of bad weather too, the Cronos CR3 carbon is a shoe definitely worth considering, and these technical features do actually work when out and about in the hills.
It’s an especially comfortable shoe on long and tough climbs, where you’re often out of the saddle and putting down as much power as you muster. In these situations, you really do notice the fit and the rigidity of the carbon sole. Finally, in terms of design, it’s a very sleek and modern looking shoe. It’s stylish and subtle and oozes quality in the finishing. The quality of materials are such that it’s also hard wearing and tough and will definitely last you for some seriously long miles and smiles.
In terms of your own feet, we’d definitely recommend getting in touch with the team at RXM Custom if you’re in the U.K. and getting your feet properly measured. With this detail added to a pair of Cronos cycling shoes, your feet will feel so much better and you’ll bring lots more smiles to those cycling miles.
