Standing out from the crowd for the right reasons

In September last year I turned 60 years of age. Some people will say ‘Wow, that’s old!’ In truth it’s not, as I hope to live and to be active for quite a long time. Yes, my hair is grey, and ironically that’s not simply an age issue, it’s genetic. I went grey quite early in life – probably sent grey by the number of idiots I’ve had to put up with throughout my life. I can however still run a cross country course or middle distance track event faster than many people a lot younger than myself. When people look at you as middle aged, they don’t see the person who has entered and won many events as a younger man. They don’t see the free climber and mountaineer. They don’t see the mountain runner, the hiker, or the person who has survived elements of the pain barrier that would make most people quit far earlier. There are aspects of what I have done and achieved that are private to me and my family, and I remain proud of them… quietly.

I’ve also shed tears over the loss of young friends, some killed in road traffic accidents whilst teenagers, some dying in their twenties, and too many dying since then. So don’t wince at age, nor mock it, because it’s a fucking privilege that I wish I’d been able to share with some truly fucking wonderful people, including my brother. Yes, hearing those endless ‘age related’  comments does piss me off, whilst I’m still quietly reassured that I have at least reached 60 in a reasonably healthy state, and I know what I will look like at 60 – and it’s not to shabby. Many of you have still to achieve this milestone, and you have very little idea on how the years will be kind to you – or otherwise.

Age is a privilege

A former colleague bumped into me a while ago and said, ‘Oh, you’re very grey haired now! Without going into detail, they didn’t look the healthiest of people, and were not aesthetically outstanding themselves. Instead of commenting on the ignorance, their ugliness and many other features that society ought to be protected from, I simply nodded and smiled… and then vowed to ignore them for the many years that I hopefully have left.

You may be asking what this has to do with cycling, and that is a reasonable question. In truth, it’s quite simple: I represent that happy and financially secure demographic who can go out and buy cycling products, buy expensive bikes and travel to far flung places without worrying too much about the costs. After all, according to many of you, I’m old and probably smell of cabbage, so I may as well spend my money whilst I have the opportunity! However, cycling brands are generally too ignorant to realise that whilst they’ve been declaring bankruptcy faster than Donald Trump can fill a nappy.

It’s my demographic – and my wife – who actually have the means to buy the products that you can’t shift because you’re targeting the wrong audience. I’m 60 years, but my physiology still says – according to medical experts – that I’m an athlete, albeit older. I have my mental faculties and I am still able to walk unaided to the cafe. So why the heck –I had to press pause and think about which word to use, because ‘why the fuck’ would have been so much more appropriate  – do cycling brands too frequently focus on so called influencers who have little in common with me… or in common with anyone within the real world? It’s a simple question, and I am willing to wait whilst you form a reasonable answer.

Looking good in lycra at 60 – the challenge

My wife – God bless her – says that I still look good in lycra, and I ride frequently. If she says otherwise, I will wear something else. There are too many non-athletes abusing other people’s eyes with sports clothing worn in the wrong context.

Personally, I know for sure that I can outrun many people half my age – I did so prior to leaving my previous career in policing. On a 3 mile run for trainees, I was asked if I’d like to join in. I did and came third, and only lacking the sprint I had in my youth for first place! Years ago, I would have rightly been sent out to run it again, had a 51 year old with an office job beaten me aged 25!

Yes, you see, I am a Mamil, and I am grey haired, and I do cycle more slowly now – even though I know that I could train harder and ride harder. However, I now love simply taking to the bike and knowing that I have time to relax and to take in the beautiful scenery of North Yorkshire. I have time to relax and talk with friends, and more importantly I have absolutely nothing to prove to anyone or to myself. I am living a life in honour of those friends who died to young, who I cycled with, rock climbed with, played badminton and tennis with, and who I hiked to to the top of mountains with. Now, I still hike and ride with them – quietly in my mind, because I’ve earned the right to say that the world is chaotic, selfish and filled with ignorance and bullshit.

As I write this, I’m looking out of my window at grey skies. However, to me that simply means that I will have a cool and refreshing ride. I don’t need the sun to shine for any images I may take, where I might have to pout, stick my arse out, or stretch my arm out front whilst my head faces down, or try to look serious and end up just looking constipated – and that’s just the men! I refuse to sell my soul to the devil, and I refuse to buy from brands who are solely focused on a demographic who own nothing but credit card debt and a too large ego. One thing about being a writer is an adherence to truth and honesty – something, along with integrity, that is sadly lacking these days. I refuse to entartain any brand that stops recognising my close friend when whe became a mom, even though she was still an exceptional athlete, an exceptional content creator and athlete, but no longer fitted the image that the brands wanted to portray. Brands seeking to replicate the mannequins that watch down on the Hunger Games, and share the same selfish traits.

I value parenting & self-respect, not Strava segments

I refuse to give airtime or webspace to brands who believe that their bank balance and ability to pay aimless looking statues is more important that the quality of their product, or the quality of their interactions with all cyclists – whatever their age, their gender or their role as a parent, and specifically as a mom.

I’ll leave you with a thought and a few searching questions: What will you be like at 60 and how will your life be defined? What would you be like as a parent? Would you dedicate yourself to your family or continue to be a selfish and self-centered preener, seeking life as a Z lister on some social media channel that continues to ignore the fact that those who actually have a disposable income are completely fed up with how they’re being treated. I know these answers and I’m proud of who I am, who I’ve been and the people I live my life in memory of.  I’m proud of my cycling friend in Flanders, who dedicates herself to parenthod now. Likewise to my numerous middle aged and parenting friends in the Cote D’Azure, who I believe have achieved so much in life.

Try thinking that I and those like me have been already journeyed through those painful epochs of life and have survived intact. Yes, I am a middle aged man/ person in lycra and I am so fucking proud to be able to say that!

Mid-season and even summer can be a challenge in North Yorkshire. Yes, I know all about heatwaves and water shortages. I also know that in the higher hills, the temperatures can dip to around 10 degrees or colder in summer, and especially so in autumn. And, with autumn now on the horizon, You need the right cycle clothing to prepare you.

I’ve been a fan of GripGrab for many years. Here at Pedalnorth, we were probably one of the first publications to spot what they were doing, with their world-leading accessories. Then we watched as the guys turned their expertise to cycling jerseys, jackets and bibs with the same level of care and detail. Their latest kit is testament to their quality and both stylish and functional in just the right way.

First Impression – Clean Design, Functional Fit

The people at GripGrab don’t go for unnecessary design and gimmicks. GripGrab follows a very clean and minimal design approach, but what stands out more is the fit. All pieces feel purpose-built for riding, with no unnecessary bulk or distractions. They use a body mapping process, meaning that the fit is performance-oriented but not overly aggressive, which makes it suitable for long endurance sessions without compromising comfort.

Fabric quality makes for fun rides

How did I find it: unbelievably comfortable, with the PACR long sleeved jersey soon becoming my go-to colder ride choice in spring and on those colder summer days. It fits exactly as it should and has easy movement, with the excellent multi-directional stretch fabrics. It’s not too thick or too warm – it’s actually just right and feels soft against the skin. As my colleague and fellow tester, Kristi says: ‘Ultimately, if it’s comfortable and functional, then I feel better and I’ll perform better. Do GripGrab achieve this – yes, I think that they do.’

Small points matter and GripGrab do these very well. They use high-quality, high-performance fabrics and they finish things off with a quality that is second to none. The wide and comfortable straps on the bib shorts simply sit nicely against the legs and the compression feels about right. If I had one point to make, I’d probably like a bit more weight to the bib shorts fabric, but that’s just a personal choice. The fit is excellent and the pad is high-quality too. And, my pet hate – the bib straps – are as good as you’ll find elsewhere at this level.

Overall, GripGrab have used their experience working with world tour riders, and the latest PACR products use a variety of technical fabrics in the right areas, all with the aim of keeping you comfortable all ride long.

Jackets and Jerseys deigned for rider comfort

On the long sleeved and the short-sleeved jackets, the zips work well and are strong, and the pockets are strong and easy to reach, with a good quality zip on the security pocket. Small points matter with cycling kit, far more than loud aesthetics. What was really impressive was the mesh  sleeves and fabric used for the arms and the side panels on the PACR short sleeved jersey. This makes a world of difference to comfort on warm days. And, like its long -sleeved sibling, the PACR short sleeved jersey is body mapped and fits like a second skin. Both jerseys also benefit from high-quality hems at the waist – which for me is another area than too many brands get wrong with an after-thought approach. Not so for GribGrab.

One particular favourite for me has been the GripGrab PACR Windproof Lightweight Vest. Ironically, it’s an item of kit that I don’t usually use or find that comfortable. However, this one from GripGrab has not only changed my perspective, it’s become a regular go-to choice of cycling clothing for me.

Featuring a windproof front panel made from premium Japanese windproof fabric, this vest genuinely works in providing that necessary shield from those cold winds and icy descending on cool windy days. The fabric is also treated with a PFC-free Durable Water Repellent (DWR) treatment – so it will shrug off light showers and front wheel spray. And, living here in the Yorkshire Dales, this has been tested several times – all thankfully positive! The open mesh back panel on the gilet allows moisture and heat to escape from within – so even as you work hard, you don’t build up a chill-inducing sweat. An elasticated lower hem with silicone gripper dots on the back of the gilet keeps everything securely in place as you battle into those headwinds.

I really do like the two-way YKK® Vision zip on the front of the gilet, which allows you to unzip from the top and allow airflow through your layers, or unzip from the bottom to allow for easier access to your jersey pockets beneath. It’s a small but important point, and one that makes this GripGrab Gilet stand out from the crowd.

Men’s PACR Bib Shorts

Bib shorts can so often be a poor example of a brands attitude towards cyclists. They often relfect last minute choices, and are simply not well thought out or comfortable. These PACR shorts from GripGrab however, have several points that I look for and they do it well:

  • strong mesh uppers to keep you cool and that sit well against the body
  • high quality and strong, wide staps that sit flat and softly,and importantly don’t move or show poorly under a jersey
  • laser cut legs with wide silicon gripping that sits against the leg and keeps things in place
  • multi panel body-mapped design to ensure a good fit
  • multi -directional and strong fabrics that move with your body
  • high-quality pad that performs on intermediate and hilly routes and keeps you comfortable – and dry in summer!

The PACR Bib Shorts combined with cool summer days leg warmers also provided a surprisingly versatile setup. They offer enough warmth for cold starts, while still feeling lighter and more flexible than full winter tights. Best of all, the compression and cut means that they stay firm and stable when I ride – like a second skin, allowing you to focus on the ride, without that annoying slippage that often happens with other brands. One area I will mention though, is that on the leg panels themselves, I’d prefer a heavier compression material – but that’s just a personal choice. The multi-panel design ensures a soft second-skin fit that feels comfortable all day long.

On the Bike – Comfort and Stability

During longer rides (2–4 hours), the key factors for me were:

• Stability of the fit – no shifting or adjustment needed
• Breathability – no excessive overheating even during harder efforts
• Freedom of movement – unbelievable, and like a second skin feel, without being too close.

GribGrab work closely with World Tour riders, and this becomes evident in the comfort of their clothing. The fabric choices, the technicity and the design and fit is all superb.

Gloves – Simple, well-made and comfortable

Gloves are often an overlooked but critical element of our cycling kit. GripGrab made their name with gloves, and they still stand out today. I tested their RIDE padded fingerless gloves, with the white material. Incidentally, I liked that when I put my hand out to signal, drivers were more likely to see my hands. The GripGrab RIDE short finger cycling gloves are the successors to the ProGel gloves, and offer superior cushioning, breathability, and grip with a recycled microsuede palm and flexible back panel. How do they work in practice – well, very good actually and the palms are just about right.

• hands stayed comfortable and gloves felt a part of me
• tough and well-made of strong fabrics
• grip remained secure in both dry and damp conditions
• no loss of control or dexterity during braking and shifting

As Kristi quite rightly says in her own review: gloves should never be a secondary thought, and these from GribGrab are a good option for early spring, summer and autumn. They feel well made, from quality fabrics and are tough, and should last a long time.

Breathability vs Protection

One of the most important aspects of early and mid-season gear is balancing insulation with breathability and the changing conditions. GripGrab manages this well:

• the fabrics protect against wind and cold without being oppressive
• technical fabrics still allow moisture to escape during effort, especially the mesh fabric on the PACR ss arms and sides
• the bibs are light and functional, and have superb uppers with a minimalist approach and high-quality straps that say seated.

Good, high-quality technical fabric choices and well mapped out designs help to reduce fluctuations in temperature and comfort. The latest PACR kit from GripGrab is stylishly simple, extremely functional and offers that protection from the elements without sacrificing breathability. Mid-season and cold summer days are always a difficult choice.

This kit is especially well suited for riders who:

• cycles consistently in variable conditions
• prioritize functionality over aesthetics
• need reliable gear for long endurance rides

It’s priced in the right area to make it accessible for most riders, and will give you a comfortable ride – and ultimately, that is always a key focus. GripGrab design and produce cycling clothing and accessories that work. The kit is also stylish, in a cool and modern way, which I like. It’s not loud or garish – it simply works on the bike and fits my purpose, whilst adding that modern styling.

Both Kristi and I were impressed by the PACR range from GripGrab, and the brand have obviously taken time to create kit that works as well as looking good.

GripGrab may not position itself as the most visible premium brand, but it delivers where it matters most: performance, reliability and functionality in real training conditions. Instead, they focus on function and fit, which is what all cyclists want, isn’t it.

Chasing a Rainbow Through Serbia

My Road to Gran Fondo Novi Sad

The decision was made during a training ride in the hills above Barcelona. I had been putting in long hours on the bike and accumulating kilometres week after week. But something was missing. I wanted a goal. Something to look forward to. Something that would push me beyond simply training for the sake of training. It had been several years since I had lined up for a major international race, and I wanted to test myself again. More importantly, I wanted the chance to qualify for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships.

That evening at home, doing that internet search that we cyclists frequently explore, and with me still thinking about the ride, I found myself scrolling through the UCI Gran Fondo World Series calendar. One event caught my attention: Novi Sad, Serbia. Yes, I know that it still conjures up particular images for many people – and those events were so real that it’s understandable – but this country in the heart of Central Europe and the Balkans has a longer history than those events of the late 20th century, and Serbia had been on my travel bucket list for years.

Like many people, when I thought about the country, I thought about Belgrade—the capital, the history, the culture and the energy that these days draws visitors from across Europe for the right reasons. Novi Sad, however, was a place I knew almost nothing about. I had never visited, never researched it, and honestly hadn’t given it much thought before seeing its name on the race calendar. However, only a few clicks late and I was registered.

The attraction of challenging yourself

The attraction wasn’t just another Gran Fondo. It was the possibility of something bigger. Like every event in the UCI Gran Fondo World Series, Novi Sad offered qualification for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships. Finish in the top 25% of your age group and the reward isn’t a medal or a T-shirt — it’s a ticket to race for a rainbow jersey. For amateur cyclists, that’s as close as most of us will ever get to feeling like a professional. And so, only a few weeks later, I arrived in Serbia with my bike and plenty of curiosity about what awaited me and the hope that my training had been enough.

My bike setup: Time Scylon aero bike, fitted with Particle Hyperlight 45/52 wheels, a Selle Italia saddle, and Pirelli P Zero Race SL-R tyres. It’s a setup I know intimately and trust completely when the road turns uphill, the pace rises, and every watt counts. However, I wanted to balance lightness with the necessary handling and responsiveness, and to get these elements working in harmony.

On arrival Novi Sad immediately felt different; most Gran Fondo’s are hosted in places already famous for cycling. Think Girona. Mallorca. The Dolomites. Novi Sad doesn’t need cycling to justify its existence. The city sits on the banks of the Danube between the river and the slopes of Fruška Gora National Park. It feels like a fascinating crossroads where Central Europe meets the Balkans. It’s already a tourism hotspot in this area of Europe, filled with history and culture. The evening before the race, the city centre was packed with cafés and restaurants. Nobody seemed particularly interested in watts, FTP or aero socks. It was refreshing and relaxing.

Getting ready to ride

Then race morning arrived. Suddenly the streets belonged to cyclists. The start line sits directly in front of the Provincial Government building in the heart of the city. Hundreds of riders from across Europe rolled into the start pens carrying the same nervous energy. Some were chasing qualification. Others were chasing personal goals. A few looked like they could have ridden straight into a professional peloton – and had probably recently left the pro and semi-pro ranks. There are a wealth of cyclists now sitting within this new grey area of being amateur and yet spending 24/7-365 as a cycling competitor on some form. I knew this was going to be a tough day riding.

The Gran Fondo Novi Sad route covers 107 kilometres with approximately 1,800 metres of elevation gain. Three key climbs define the race and shape the final result. As the neutralised start rolled out through the city, I found myself wondering whether I’d underestimated the race. The answer arrived 11 kilometres later. That’s where the first major climb begins. Groups exploded. Riders were dropped. The race settled into that familiar Gran Fondo rhythm: full gas, brief recovery, then full gas again. The strongest riders used the climbs to create gaps. Everyone else was trying to limit losses.

I remember looking down at my computer and seeing numbers I would have preferred not to see. I also remember looking up. Beautiful forests lined much of the course, providing welcome shade on a warm day. At other moments the road opened into wide fields and rolling countryside, with views stretching across the landscape. For a few moments I forgot I was racing. That’s rare. Most races become a blur of suffering and statistics. Novi Sad managed to remain a journey.

The second climb came around kilometre 50. Then comes the final climb and the rolling roads across the ridge of Fruška Gora, where every acceleration matters and every weakness is exposed. Then, the final kilometres back toward the city were fast and demanding. Before I could pause, it was suddenly all over. Months of training reduced to a number on a results sheet. Thankfully though, this time, the answer was a good one and I crossed the finish line as the second overall female rider and secured qualification for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships – the rainbow jersey dream would continue.

Post-race reflections

In truth, the race itself went surprisingly smoothly. The only real problem of the weekend came after the finish line – the trophy. It was enormous. Getting it back to the hotel while managing a bike and all my equipment turned out to be more complicated than any of the three climbs! Thankfully, one of the race photographers came to the rescue and helped me. The adventure continued at the airport, where I discovered the trophy was far too big for my bike bag; and so, while the bike travelled in its case, the trophy travelled with me as hand luggage.

Did I qualify for the World Championships? Absolutely, yes! But the result wasn’t the only thing I that brought home from Serbia, because the real discovery wasn’t only that I had earned a place at the Worlds, it was discovering a side of Serbia I never expected to find and which was refreshing. Everyone talks about Belgrade. Everyone talks about Girona. Everyone talks about Mallorca. Few people talk about Novi Sad. For me, after one weekend in Serbia, I suspect that this won’t remain true for long. Serbia is different these days, and it’s focusing on its culture and sublime scenery to attract cultural and sports tourists for the right reasons to this amazing place in the heart of Europe.

With roads, facilities and landscapes to rival anywhere, I believe that Novi Sad will soon be a destination choice for cyclists from all over the world. All able to share in the relaxed and warm welcome that I’d been lucky enough to experience myself, on my journey to the end of the rainbow. Where to next – who knows. What I do know though, is that there’ll be a challenge involved!

Over the years, I’ve tested cycling clothing from many different brands. Most products are good, some are very good, but every now and then you come across something that immediately feels special. That was my experience with the GripGrab PACR Short Sleeve Jersey and PACR Bib Shorts from the Spring/Summer 2026 collection.

From the first ride, it was clear that GripGrab has put a lot of attention to detail into both comfort and performance. The fit is close and sporty, without it feeling tight or restrictive, making the kit super comfortable for both hard training sessions and long days on the bike. Clothing should wrap you like a second skin, and that’s the feeling I get wearing the new PACR collection from GripGrab. Leet’s take a brief look then…

GripGrab PACR ss Women’s Jersey

The PACR Short Sleeve Jersey is made from technical, lightweight and highly breathable materials. The design has been thought out too, with the material choice and thickness varying across the jersey and under the arms. Even on warmer rides, it helps keep you comfortable and prevents that heavy and overheated feeling that some jerseys can create. The fit wraps you perfectly, due to the multi-directional stretch and feels fast and aerodynamic, but most importantly, it just feels nice and really natural to wear.

I love the colours too, especially the purple jersey and its feminine styling.

The jersey features raglan sleeves, and has no underarm seam, a lower collar, and strong silicone grippers at the sleeve hem and the bottom hem, ensuring that it stays in place and allows great freedom of movement and ergonomic comfort. Additionally, the jersey includes three top-entry pockets and a secured zip pocket, allowing for convenient storage. For enhanced visibility, all logos are reflective. The lighter mesh style weave on the side panels is also great for helping you to stay cool and allow air to flow.

GripGrab describe the jersey as being one that ‘you can pick for race days or whenever you feel ready to turn up the pace during epic summer rides!’ For me, I simply love wearing it anytime.

PACR Women’s Bib Shorts

Bib shorts are always a tricky choice for women, for a variety of reasons. Thankfully though, the PACR Bib Shorts are equally impressive. The fabric is top quality and has the right weight and strength, providing good support and compression while still allowing complete freedom of movement. During longer rides, the bibs stay comfortably in place and continue to feel supportive hour after hour. They have UPF50+  sun protection, which is also a nice bonus for cyclists who spend a lot of time outdoors, on long summer rides.

What impressed me the most, however, was the quality of the materials. This is actually the hardest part of the review to describe. You can talk about breathability, compression, comfort, and performance, but the truth is that some things simply need to be experienced. The fabrics used in the PACR collection feel incredibly premium against the skin. They are soft, comfortable, and high quality in a way that is difficult to explain with words alone. It’s one of those products where you immediately notice the difference the moment you put it on. The only way to convey this is to say, ‘You must try them yourself, because they feel really nice!’ Simple, but true!

I also appreciate the direction GripGrab is taking as a company. They continue to improve their products while working towards more responsible manufacturing and material choices. Rather than making big promises, they focus on continuous improvement, which feels both honest and realistic.

After spending time riding in the PACR jersey and bib shorts, I came away feeling genuinely impressed. Everything feels carefully designed with cyclists in mind, from the fit and comfort to the quality of the materials.

Final Verdict

The GripGrab PACR Short Sleeve Jersey and PACR Bib Shorts are excellent choices for cyclists looking for premium comfort, performance, and quality. The fit is excellent, the fabrics feel fantastic, and the overall riding experience is exactly what you would expect from high-end cycling apparel.

First Impressions for Gravel Riding

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been using the Light Bicycle Turbo 50 wheelset extensively during gravel training rides, and my first impressions have been extremely positive. These days we can start to look away from the more well-known wheel brands, safe in the knowledge that there are some extremely technical and well-made wheels coming into focus for the right reasons – including performance and price point.

Although my first gravel races with these wheels are still ahead, they’ve already proven themselves to be fast, confidence-inspiring, and exceptionally well-built. All critical issues for training and racing, when you have to rely on your wheels for those marginal gains. Did you know that wheels are the most common upgrade for cyclists when they buy a bike.

The first thing that stood out with the Light Turbo 50 wheelset was how responsive the wheelset feels. Despite the 50 mm rim depth, acceleration is quick, and the wheels feel lively when putting power down. Whether accelerating out of corners or riding short climbs, they respond instantly and feel very efficient.

Gravel riding performance wheels

Gravel riding can be a different beast for wheels. Thankfully though, on faster gravel roads, the Turbo 50 carries speed remarkably well. Once the bike is up to speed, maintaining momentum feels effortless. The aerodynamic rim profile gives the bike a fast, smooth feeling, especially on those long and challenging open gravel sections. At the same time, the wheels remain surprisingly stable in crosswinds, providing confidence even in the more exposed conditions. This aligns with the design intent of the Turbo rim profile, which aims to improve aerodynamic efficiency while maintaining crosswind stability and lateral stiffness. It’s refreshing when a product fits and works as it was intended to.

The 25 mm internal rim width is also an excellent match for modern gravel tyres. I’ve been riding them with wider gravel tyres, and the tyre profile feels well supported, allowing lower pressures for improved grip and comfort without sacrificing cornering stability. The bike feels planted and predictable over loose gravel, rough roads, and when heading into fast corners. Another aspect I’ve really appreciated is the ride quality. The wheels strike an excellent balance between stiffness and comfort. They feel direct under power while still absorbing road chatter well enough to keep long training rides comfortable. Tubeless setup was straightforward, with the tyres seating easily and maintaining pressure consistently – viola!

Quality and performance in balance

The overall build quality is exactly what you would expect from a premium carbon wheelset. Light are a well-respected brand and focus on technology and innovation. The finish of their Turbo 50 wheelset is clean, spoke tension is even, and the wheels also arrived perfectly true – definitely a rare occurrence. Every detail reflects a high level of craftsmanship and scores positive points for me.

• Excellent speed retention on fast gravel roads.
• Stable and predictable handling in crosswinds.
• Stiff under power while remaining comfortable on rough surfaces.

• Outstanding build quality and finish.

Looking Ahead

While I haven’t raced on the Light Bicycle Turbo 50 wheelset yet, my training experience gives me plenty of confidence heading into my first gravel events. Based on everything I’ve experienced so far, I expect these wheels to be an excellent choice for riders looking for a lightweight, aerodynamic, and reliable gravel racing wheelset. If they perform in racing as well as they have during training, they’ll be a wheelset I’ll be happy to keep using for a long time – and that has to be a good recommendation.

Having recently had the opportunity to test out the Scicon Aerocomfort bike bag, and having used their products for years, I was pleasantly smiling when I was asked to test out their latest eyewear ranges too. And, if the Aerocomfort 3.1 demonstrates Scicon’s expertise in bike travel, the Aerostorm sunglasses showcase the brand’s commitment to on-bike performance – a key element for any serious cyclist.

Modern cyclists expect more than simple sun protection. Today’s eyewear must combine aerodynamic efficiency, optical clarity, comfort, and reliability across everything from race-day efforts to long and tough endurance rides. The Aerostorm enters this competitive category with confidence—and delivers impressively.

At first glance, the Aerostorm stands out with its aggressive race-inspired design. The large single-lens construction provides excellent coverage and an exceptionally wide field of view, helping riders stay focused on the road ahead whether descending at speed, cornering, or riding in a group. Optical performance is one of its strongest features. The lens offers sharp contrast and effective light management, improving visibility in changing conditions while controlling glare without overly darkening the surroundings.

Comfort & Performance

Comfort is equally impressive. Despite its large size, the Aerostorm feels lightweight and secure, remaining stable even on rough roads and long rides. I’m always conscious of sunglasses being too big a fit on my quite petit face, and then slipping down during races. These sunnies were just about right, and had a small adjustment pad on the nose too. Ventilation is also excellent, with airflow channels helping to reduce fogging during hard efforts and warmer conditions. Perhaps the Aerostorm’s greatest strength is its versatility. While clearly designed with racing in mind, it performs just as well during everyday training rides. It successfully balances high-performance features with all-day usability.

Of course, riders who prefer smaller, more traditional eyewear may find the oversized shield design too bold. The AeroStorm also sits firmly in the premium price category. However, both are expected trade-offs in a product aimed at performance-focused cyclists. The attention to detail reflects Scicon’s close connection to professional cycling. Every aspect of the AeroStorm feels developed with real-world riding experience in mind. They look well made and feel like a quality pair of sunglasses out to feel.

Final Verdict

The Scicon Aerostorm successfully combines aerodynamics, comfort, optical clarity, and modern styling in a premium package. Whether you’re racing, training, or simply looking for high-performance eyewear, it is a product well worth considering.

Stylish? Absolutely. Performance-focused? Without question.

The Gold Standard for Hassle-Free Bike Travel

Travelling with a road bike has traditionally been one of cycling’s biggest headaches. Between being forced to dismantle components, protecting fragile carbon frames, and trusting the unpredictable airport baggage handlers, flying with a bike can quickly become stressful – and potentially expensive if the bike is damaged.

That’s exactly why the Scicon Aerocomfort 3.1 has earned such a strong reputation among cyclists—and after testing it, it’s easy to see why many World Tour teams rely on it. The Aerocomfort’s biggest advantage is simplicity. Unlike many traditional bike cases, it requires minimal disassembly. In most cases, only the wheels need to be removed, while the handlebars, saddle, and seatpost remain in place. This not only saves valuable time but also preserves your bike fit perfectly. Also, with the increase in integrated handlebars, keeping things fixed to the bike is important.

Packing & Practicality

Packing the bag is also intuitive and well thought out. The integrated bike stand secures the frame, and the padded wheel compartments provide additional protection, whilst multiple carrying handles make airport navigation much easier. Every detail feels designed by people who genuinely understand bike travel. What makes the Aerocomfort stand out is its sensible balance between protection and practicality. The padding elements provided allow you to fit things around the frame once in the bag, and it all feels kind of good and easy to travel with once fastened up. Is it confidence inspiring – yes, I think it is. It’s also very well made from quality materials and can take the rigours of international travel in its stride.

While hard-shell cases may offer slightly more impact resistance, they are often heavier, bulkier, and less convenient. The Aerocomfort provides impressive protection through its reinforced structure, thick padding, and Frame Defender system while remaining significantly more user-friendly. Another major advantage is speed. Once familiar with the system, packing takes around 10–15 minutes, allowing riders to spend less time preparing and more time riding. Of course, it isn’t perfect. The bag is still large, which can make storage challenging, and its premium price tag may not appeal to occasional travellers. Riders who prioritise maximum protection above all else may still prefer a hard-shell case.

Final Verdict

However, for most cyclists, the Aerocomfort 3.1 strikes an exceptional balance between its obvious convenience, protection, and ease of use. The fact that professional teams trust it for international travel speaks volumes about its reliability.

If you travel regularly with your road bike, the Scicon Aerocomfort 3.1 is one of the best investments you can make. It transforms bike travel from a stressful chore into a simple and  straightforward process—and once you’ve experienced that convenience, it’s difficult to go back.

Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.

For those of you that haven’t noticed, carbon bike frame production in Europe is not only alive and kicking; they’re still leading the way in innovation and engineering excellence. Yes, tucked away between Vienna in Austria and Bratislava in Slovakia, the small town of Gajary is home to the legendary carbon manufacturer, TIME Bicycles – the brand of former champions such as Paulo Bettini and Tom Boonen. And, TIME has been extremely busy since the Cardinal Cycling Group bought the brand only a few years ago with a seemingly endless drive to innovate and create new bikes to feed the global cycling communities’ thirst for quality and performance.

Leading the way on carbon bike engineering

TIME has always been at the forefront of carbon bike innovation. They’re one of those brands that cyclists aspire to ride. When somebody asks you what you’re riding, you simply say, ‘It’s a TIME’ and they know immediately that you’re riding one of the best carbon bikes in the world.

Their bikes are produced in-house at every stage. They weave the various threads themselves, using their proprietary Braided Carbon Structures (BCS) process, and their in-house Resin Transfer Molding (RTM), which in short, creates possibly the best carbon bike frames in the world. These days, too many bike brands use the phrase ‘designed in Europe’ or ‘assembled in Europe’, to hide the fact that many of the engineering processes are carried out elsewhere. Not so at TIME, who are legendary for their industry-leading carbon bike frame expertise. Their latest race offering, the TIME Scylon is testament to this, and is the ultimate expression of what a modern, high-performance road bike should be.

It embraces all the learning from nearly 40 years of carbon fibre expertise, to create a road bike engineered for aerodynamics, speed, and precision handling. Yes, the all new Scylon features their advanced carbon fiber technology, full cable integration, ultra-efficient power transfer, and clearance for 32c tires without sacrificing that legendary ride quality and durability that a TIME frameset has. The new TIME Fluidity endurance bike

In May of this year, TIME deliberately flew under the radar, releasing their latest endurance bike, as they set out to capture a proportion of the growing endurance cycling scene. With a focus on all-day comfort, the TIME Fluidity raises the bar on performance and quality – literally! Yes, the Fluidity has a higher stack height and is completely re-developed to meet the needs of the modern performance-orientated endurance cyclist.

Fluidity’s endurance geometry places the rider in a more upright position compared to a pure race bike – shoulders back, breathing freely, sustainable over 200-kilometre days. This they say is not a softer ride. It is, however, a more relaxed position, and one that supports those all-day epic rides. The performance characteristics are equal to those of the previous TIME Alpe D’Huez, but the difference is in how you feel after four hours. The Beginning of a Cycling Season

Building Form, Racing Early, and Trusting Your Bike

The beginning of a season is never just about racing. It’s about building — form, confidence, and trust in every detail. Spring brings that shift: longer days, higher volume, and the first real tests of where you stand. The legs are not yet at their peak, but the work is already there — in the kilometers, in the climbs, and in the consistency of each week.

This year started with exactly that approach. Big training blocks, over 400 kilometers a week and more than 5,000 meters of elevation, combining endurance with sustained climbing efforts. These early weeks are not about perfection — they are about creating a foundation strong enough to carry you through the months ahead.

And then, the first races arrive.

Granfondo Colnago Lake Garda was one of those early-season benchmarks. A fast start, a strong field, and a course that demanded both control and endurance. The kind of race where you don’t yet feel at your absolute best, but you have enough to fight. Finishing in the Top 10 overall women was not just a result — it was a signal. The training was working, and the form was already there, even this early in the season.

Racing early season in Spain

Soon after came Gran Fondo Lloret de Mar — a completely different challenge. Familiar roads, but never an easy race. Constant changes in rhythm, short climbs, technical sections. It’s a race that rewards efficiency and precision. That day, everything aligned, and I took 1st place in the long distance category. Not because the season had peaked, but because the base was solid enough to perform. But what defines this part of the season even more than racing is the terrain you train on. In Catalonia, climbs are not just part of the ride — they are the ride.

Col de Fòrmic and Santa Fe del Montseny stretch close to 20 kilometers each, long and steady. Climbs where you settle into your effort and stay there, minute after minute. These are the efforts that build real strength — not explosive, but controlled and repeatable.

And then there is Rat Penat.

Short, brutal, and unforgiving. Ramps reaching up to 28%, demanding everything at once — power, balance, and control. There is no easing into a climb like this. It’s immediate, intense, and very real. And in these moments, you feel exactly how your body and your bike respond under stress. Across all of this — long endurance rides, early-season races, steep gradients — one thing has remained constant: the feeling of confidence on the bike.

Confidence in the TIME Scylon

The TIME Scylon has been there in every scenario, adapting naturally from race intensity to long training days. It’s not something you think about while riding — and that’s exactly the point. Whether accelerating in a group, holding speed on a descent, or maintaining efficiency deep into a multi-hour ride, the bike responds without hesitation. For me,now that I have spent a year getting it right; a bike fit, adjustments, different wheel variations – it’s become a part of me and we ride as one unit. A new season does however bring new challanges, and I need to dial it in again – to get those final elements in tune.

At the beginning of a season, nothing is fully defined yet. Form is still developing, goals are still ahead, and the biggest challenges are still to come. But this is where everything starts to take shape.

The work is done in the background — in the long climbs, the heavy weeks, the early races where you test yourself before you’re fully ready. And through all of it, you begin to build something more important than peak performance. You build trust.

Trust in your preparation. Trust in your progression; and trust in the bike beneath you — ride after ride, climb after climb — as the season begins to unfold.

The Route: Fast Flats and Sharp Turns

The 2026 Lake Garda Gran Fondo course was a beautiful loop totalling 140 km with 2,010 m of climbing. Despite the chilly start to the day —a crisp morning that had us all shivering in our gilets — the pace was scorching from the start. People were ready to race, and the riders were taking no prisoners – this was a race, and I needed to be ready and focused.

The First 40 km: This section was almost entirely flat and fast. We flew along the lake front in a massive peloton, tucked in to save every possible watt for the vertical work ahead. It worked as it should, with people moving to take turns and keeping the pace. It was an electric feeling, with the sublime scenery of the lake and mountains all around me. Cycling adventures are days like these and I loved it. Italy is always a special place to ride. However, it’s not a flat country, and there were climbs lying ahead!

The Climbs: Breaking the Spirit

This area of Italy is known as the Lakes and Mountains region for a reason –it has climbs and some of them are tough, yet magnificent. AS cyclists we seek these challenges, and we relish in the pain and suffering and emotions of succeeding. Lake Garda is like this, sitting in a basin of peaks, surrounded by epic scenery and with ribbons of roads that weave their way up and down, twisting into corners and shapes that keep you thinking all day long.

Riding at home, close to Barcelona I am used to climbs, but these add that little Italian magic, and you have to be ready. I knew that I had trained and I was fit. However, the pace of the day adds something, and the mental challenge is equal to the physical.

The course featured four distinct ascents that defined the day’s difficulty:

1. Ascent of Navazzo

The wake-up call came at km 40 in Gargnano. At 7.16 km long with a 6.4% mean slope, it immediately shattered the peloton. Rising to an altitude of 471 m, it provided the first real test for my heavy legs.

2. Ascent of Capovalle

Just as the recovery from Navazzo began, we hit Capovalle at km 56. This 5.8 km climb took us up to the highest point of the day at 900 m altitude. While the average gradient remained a steady 6.4%, the fatigue from my 400 km training week started to settle in deep here.

3. Ascent of Preseglie

A shorter, punchier effort at km 89. Stretching over 2.15 km with a 4.7% slope, it served as a brutal “stinger” to keep the heart rate pinned before the final major push.

4. Ascent of Coste (S. Eusebio)

The final hurdle arrived at km 93. This 6.62 km climb, averaging 4.1%, was a battle of attrition. By this point, the views of the valley were spectacular, but my focus was entirely on the wheel in front of me.

Pure Italian Magic

Despite starting the day deep in a recovery hole, the sheer quality of the organization and the safety measures on the course allowed me to just race. Yes, I was exhausted, but it had been exhilerating and filled with life and passion and emotions. One of those days cycling that we want to remember always. Swooping into corners, the pain of the climbs and the thrill of the descents. Everything had come together and my bike had stayed the course, carrying me through.

I crossed the line exhausted, but thrilled to have managed 10th place in the Female overall and 7th in the 18–39 age group. Finishing in the top ten after such a massive volume of training is a testament to what the body can do when fuelled by Italian passion and world-class scenery.
