As a pro level mountain bike racer, with experience competing on the roads, too, cycling kit performance and comfort is crucial to me. It has to stop the elements in winter, allow me a good degree of movement, and give me that extra security that comes with high-performance and comfortable winter cycling clothing. Thankfully, working closely with many of the world’s top cycle teams in the pro peloton, Italian brand Alé understand this, and their latest Fondo & Clima Warm range of men’s winter cycle clothing carries forward their adherence to excellence. Testing Ale is always reassuring, reminding me what good cycle clothing should be.
Alé Pragma Jacket Fondo 3.0

In terms of a winter cycle clothing choice, the Pragma Jacket Fondo 3.0, together with the Clima Warm Plus 2.0 tights and the Klimatik shoe covers, create a well-balanced winter cycling setup designed for low temperatures and variable conditions. It should be perfect for winter cycling here in Transylvania – so, let’s see!

When it comes to training, there aren’t many moments for you to catch your breath. After that well-deserved month off following a full season, comes… winter. The weather takes no prisoners, either, and you have to be dedicated – which is why good kit is critical. There are days when it’s not safe to head out on the road, but there are also days when… by having the right equipment and clothing, it makes the difference.

Ale Pragma Fondo 3.0 Jacket

For me, the Ale Pragma Fondo 3.0 jacket stands out through a successful combination of protection and breathability, offering enough warmth for winter rides without feeling bulky or restrictive. Well, yes that’s the technical description – but what does it feel like in real conditions and a cold winter in Romania? It actually does what it says; made from high-performance and multi-stretch fabrics, this well-cut jacket is close enough a fit to feel right, but with the benefit of allowing me freedom of movement on the bike. The fabric is not too heavy and not too light, ensuring that warmth and breathability is regulated, whilst the coating also beads a good degree of the moisture if required.

Yes, when the going gets tough, the innovative and technical membrane provide good wind protection and repels light rain, while the thermal interior helps maintain a stable body temperature even on descents or in exposed areas. All of this means that I remain smiling and comfort, helping me to maintain that all-important performance.

Finally, then, the fit of this stylish winter cycling jersey is sporty and performance-oriented, typical for Alé, sitting nicely on the bike without flapping at speed, and the eucalyptus color adds a modern and elegant look that is easy to match with other kit pieces. It has the usual 3 pockets at the back, allowing plenty of on-the-ride storage, a good high collar to keep the wind out and away from my neck, and a strong zip that seems as though it will last the test of time – always useful on winter clothing. Do I like it and did it work well – absolutely. And, it carries forward the Alé badge of quality and styling that should last you for a long time.

Alé Clima Warm Plus 2.0

The Alé Clima Warm Plus 2.0 winter bib tights perfectly complement the Pragma jacket, delivering a high level of thermal insulation for the lower body and making them ideal for long rides in cold weather – viola! When the temperatures drop here in Romania, that really is important to me; but these bibs did their job and kept me warm and comfortable.

We all know the importance of this, alongside the close but unrestricted fit, in this case due to Alé using high-quality multi-stretch fabric with good compression, and choosing the panelling in a body-mapping way. The fabric is as I mentioned, stretchy in the right way, yet still having reasonable compression. In use, the bibs feel relaxed and comfortable, adapting well to the riding position, and protecting efficiently against cold and wind without restricting movement. At the same time, the breathability is good enough to prevent overheating during sustained efforts. All good for a hard winter training ride, then!

When it comes to pads, whether you’re a pro rider or a weekend warrior, quality is the difference between a successful ride and pain. Fortunately, the material and structure used by Alé is up to expectations and I didn’t experience any issues. One thing I appreciate about all Alé pants are the braces. I have never tested a pair of pants that I didn’t like the braces on. The craftsmanship and the fact that they fit perfectly on the body are a real plus.

With the Clima Warm model, Alé managed to create perfect equipment for cold days, but he didn’t skimp on quality either, and you don’t feel like you’re overdressed.

Alé Klimatik shoe covers

The Alé Klimatik shoe covers are for me, an essential part of this winter setup, providing excellent protection against cold and moisture, and keeping the feet warm and dry even in wet or rainy conditions. In terms of the fit, they fit well over cycling shoes, feature a solid and well thought out and tough construction, and add an extra layer of safety thanks to reflective details. The zipper is always an area of weakness for overshoes. Alé have thought about this and spent time selecting a tough zipper, which works will with the stretch waterproof fabric.

Overall, this latest Alé kit is an excellent choice for those cyclists who train or ride long distances in winter. It offers you that all-important balance between comfort, protection, and a premium look, without major compromises in performance.

Is it something that I would choose myself – absolutely, and the remainder of this winter will only clarify this for me.

Let me be clear about this: I liked the look of Ale Cycling’s products from the very beginning. In addition to the unique design, with an aesthetic sense, the quality of the products is clearly superior to other brands. It oozes quality from first sight, and is also well finished. Yes, aesthetic elements and finishing are important to women cyclists in particular .

This cold season, I had the opportunity to test some of the latest kits from Ale Cycling, specially designed for women, for the cold periods of the year, with wind, rain and low temperatures. Here in Transylvania it gets very cold and clothing has to perform .

Alé Cycling – Cosmic Women’s Jacket

Cold mornings have a way of testing your motivation to train . The air is chilly, the road is damp and every piece of gear suddenly counts. It’s in this environment that the Alé Cosmic women’s jacket starts to make sense . From the first few minutes on the bike, it feels like a natural extension of your body, rather than an extra layer. It effectively blocks the cold wind, especially on the more exposed sections of the road, while the soft thermal fleece inside maintains a stable warmth without overheating once the pace picks up.

Fit to form

As the ride progresses, the strength of the Cosmic Jacket becomes apparent. When the air is crisp and the roads are glistening with morning dew , few pieces of cycling gear are as indispensable as a pair of trusty cycling tights. On one of those pre-dawn workouts, I slipped on the Alé Klimatik K-Atmo 3.0 tights and instantly felt the difference – these weren’t just your regular cycling shorts, but a piece of clothing specifically designed for those days when you’re going to ride anyway.

Winter warmth & moisture management

From the moment I put them on, it was clear that these tights were serious business. The material wraps around your legs like a second skin, hugging your curves without restricting movement, thanks to an ergonomic cut that minimizes seams and maximizes freedom of movement . The tights are made from a durable water-repellent material – B-Tour DWR – which causes steam and light rain to collect and roll off, rather than soak into the material. Even on stretches where road spray reached mid-legs, the material remained surprisingly dry and breathable, striking a balance between protection and ventilation that many winter garments lack.

But it’s not just about moisture management; there’s also warmth. A soft, brushed inner mesh adds a cosy feel against the skin, helping to trap body heat on cold, damp mornings without making you feel overheated once you put it on. Whether on tougher climbs or more intense workouts, the tights felt comfortable and confident, allowing me to focus on the ride rather than the weather.

One of the key moments that stuck in my mind was when a light drizzle started—the kind that usually soaks regular pants in minutes . With the K-Atmo 3.0 on, I barely noticed the change; the water-repellent treatment did its job, and the fit didn’t feel tight or chafe uncomfortably even after an hour in the saddle. As the sun rose, the reflective details caught the light and helped me feel safer on quieter roads, a small but valuable touch when visibility is reduced.

Comfort & performance

Another subtle but important detail was the seating experience. These bib tights feature a quality integrated pad tailored for long rides, offering enough cushioning to ease saddle pressure without feeling bulky. Combined with the supportive fit and the flat, wide shoulder straps that stay comfortably in place, they feel like a thoughtfully engineered piece, especially for riders who value both performance and comfort on colder rides.

The temperature range here leans toward cool to chilly conditions — somewhere around 0°C to 5°C felt just right, though layering light leg warmers underneath could certainly extend that range if needed.

Ladies Cold Weather Cycle Clothing by Alé

Wrapped in style – with Alé Cycling

When Alé Cycling launched their Fall-Winter 2022/23 collection, it was designed just for these time periods. However, they made it so well, that’s it’s also perfect for early spring, which is why I’m still wearing it in Transylvania.

The range has lots of great garments: breathable, protective, comfortable cycle clothing for all weather conditions, where colours and design stands out at first sight. The style is based on art in textile engineering, to offer jerseys, bib tights, jackets, underwear, and accessories that improve the cyclist’s performance in lower temperatures – like early spring too. The theme of the new collection is “No matter the season”: an invitation to go cycling without worrying about weather conditions.

I always look forward to and like the feeling of fresh new kit to test. I get excited when opening a box with new kit! Feels like opening a present – Hehe. Well, the new kit I will talk about today is from a well-known Italian elite cycling brand Alé Cycling, who work with the best riders in the world. The new range is improved on their already excellent standards, and it all looks awesome. Alé always had colourful and unique designs for their cycling apparel. As you know, I am in love with the colour blue/turquoise and I already have 3 jackets from them, which are absolutely superb (you can find the articles and pics in my blog section). However, this year I made a change in my colour preferences – see below what I chose.

1. KLIMATIK K-TORNADO 2.0 – Water repellent long sleeve jacket woman

What attracted me to this jacket is its bright pink colour which you can hear screaming “SEE ME” on the road while it’s traffic. Brilliant idea, I thought to myself; this way, the drivers can see me better – especially now, when the weather is colder, and the colours of nature haven’t appeared yet. The developed technology by Ale for this jacket is their Klimatik design fabrics: the best possible protection against any type of climate. It’s windproof, made with different portions of material joined together for the best performance and best comfort. Its textile composition is made of a high-quality external fabric: 86% polyester, 14% elastane; internal fabric: 90% polyester, 10% elastane; non-textile membrane: 100% polytetrafluoroethylene.

The front, bright pink area is made with a softshell material to protect from the frontal incoming wind or little raindrops. It has shorter length in comparison with the back, because usually when you lean forward in riding position the jacket/jersey piles up if the length is too long. A light “A” shape at the front bottom, gives it a nice hourglass feminine fit too – which I like. Also in the front, the zipper is covered, giving it a more stylish and elegant look. The collar is generously wide and comfortable, with thermal panel on the back of the neck and thermal brushed collar liner to keep warm. These little details matter and show the attention that the brand give to their clothing.

However, the back area from the shoulders down and under arms has different material. More breathable fabrics but protects from humidity. The back and under arms get more sweat than the other parts of the body, and this different material keeps it breathable and dry. The length is more long to protect and cover good the lower back area from the wind. Has 3 rear spacious rear pockets with reflective details which are also designed more discreet and not so obviously visible finishes off with a silicone waist band to keep the jacket in place during movements while riding.

The fit and feel is almost like a jersey, but due to a 3-layer fabric, it protects like a rain jacket. EVENT membrane and DWR treatment has been used to make this jacket to ensure high breathability and thermal insulation even in wet conditions. K-TORNADO 2.0 jacket folds perfectly with body form and movement while riding due to bonded fabrics and body mapping technology. For comfort the best temperatures to ride are between 6°and 12°c. For intermediate climatic conditions, you can enjoy wearing it in late autumn, winter and early spring.

2. PR-R PYRAMID – Jacket woman

PR. R comes from Alé’s first-ever line, designed for the teams and immediately becoming their classic for its ergonomic race fit and innovative technologies. This Alé Pyramid jacket is similar to Klimatik K-Tornado but full thermal, windproof and designed to ride in lower temperatures. It is constructed too with multi-panel technique and the placement of the fabrics make this jacket breathable and highly protective, therefore suitable for rides which require high intensity effort.

Riding outside in cold windy temperatures is no problem due to the 3layer fabric with Windtex membrane that protects from the wind. On the inside it has soft internal fleece, with micro-square structure which permits quick ventilation of the sweat to get away from the skin. Its main composition is 87% polyester, 13% elastane. Technical and refined details complete the jacket’s performances. You can wear it with a long sleeve base layer when the temperature is near freezing in winter or with a sleeveless thinner baselayer if the temperature is more than 12 degrees Celsius.

I like the race fit so much, and it suits my riding style. It’s very comfortable for intensive rides and extreme temperatures. I really like the race tight fit rather than the regular or loose fit. You can really enjoy the comfort and feel during the rides, thanks to the body mapping technology that makes it feel like a second skin. Also, a common trait that Alé clothes have, specifically the women’s culottes, which are more flared on the form of the female body. It’s a very feminine brand, whilst retaining its performance credentials. The front length is shorter than the back and it stays put due to a silicone waist band. Underarm it had a different material covered with fleece on the inside, to help sweat from underarm area to ventilate. The cuffs are wide enough and raw-cut without sewn edge and anatomically shaped for maximum comfort.

In the back it has got 3 rear discrete, but spacious pockets for the necessities during rides, plus reflective logo on the middle pocket. The unique graphic design fully embodies the modern and technical image of Alè®. The front zipper has a protective internal flap, and it has the cam-lock feature – it means the zipper moves only when held in horizontal position and will not slide up and down during movement. The collar has a thermal padded panel all around the neck and in the back area the material is a little bit longer to cover the knack properly. This feature is made to protect from the wind and sweat which can be uncomfortable during the ride.

3. R-EV1 FUTURE WARM – Bib tights woman

First of all, we all need good tights with good qualities. It is the key to long comfortable rides. However, these are not just regular cycling bib tights. What makes them special and made me curious about them, is their unique concept design. Due to its exclusive wraparound microfibre mono-bib strap eliminates the discomfort caused by the straps around chest area. This is something new for me to try on, as I’ve been using only regular 2 strap bibs. When style meets quality, Alé has it without doubt. The bibs name – R-EV1 – comes from a capsule collection that offers the best textile technology available today.

B-HOT THERMO DWR (durable water repellent) is a special fabric that helps heating and thermoregulate the skin. Around the waist until right under the chest there is a bodice, the front part is made from see-through fleeced mesh which keeps the abdomen warm but ventilated. The rest of the bodice, which is around the back and sides, is made of a thicker fleece non-see-through, which keeps you warm even more. Right in the middle of the back there is a space or “hole” and on the right side there is a relatively small pocket which can fit a car key for example. The top of the bodice is finished with a wide thin band which continues up in the frontal part hanging around the neck. The strap is raw cut which is very comfortable while wearing. The mono strap feature makes possible to undress and dress without needing to take off the jersey or jacket.

Another benefit to these bibs is that they have a waterproof leg cuff. The rainproof leg cuffs can be worn over the shoe cover to protect against dirt and road splashes. It perfectly protects from wind and cold too – the length reaches the mid-calf. Overall, the bib tights are made from multiple panels –each different with a specific role – to ensure the best ergonomic fit and comfort. Alé used the flatlock stitching’s technique for a more comfortable feel. Riding outside in the cold or light rain is acceptable thanks to the DWR fabric which covers the bib tights whole, keeping the legs warm and protected. Two reflective details are put specifically on the back of the tights to be more visible on road.

Now, let’s get to the chamois. Most people never check the chamois, which is why they buy wrong ones. For me personally, the Alé chamois has always been the first choice. I’ve always recommended their products based on my testing. When it comes to chamois, I only have compliments to say. They are one of the best chamois so far and trust me I have lots of kits. Alé understand the importance of the chamois, which is why they developed their own and patented it. From my perspective, it’s super comfortable and worth all their effort. The pad’s velocity is up to 8h of comfort. It’s light, slim and works in the right areas – no more details required. Why not try yourself and see what I’m talking about?

Personally, I think that it’s a super stylish and performance orientated range of cycle clothing, that fits where it should and makes me feel awesome on the bike. The importance of accessories – Ale Cycling

Dressing up for the ride can be a little tricky in a cold weather season, because the temperature and the feel can change quickly during the ride. Once the sun is under the clouds, it’s much colder, and so, we have to dress smart. The base layer and accesories like gloves, necktube, shoe cover, socks are equally important as the main kit when choosing how to dress-up for the ride. They can improve your ride due to their protective features. Let’s see some of the essentials from Italian quality brand Alé.

INTIMO KLIMA – Long sleeve base layer for women

This baselayer is made for cold weather and winter rides between -2°/10°c, meaning that it’s also perfect for late autumn and early spring. Even when you are sweating lots from trainig, the material doesn’t stay wet, due to great wicking properties. It is what you need when you ride.; being able to perform hard and yet stay dry and comfortable. To be honest I use it at ski too, it’s so good – haha.

It’s important to mention that the Alé base layer is also environmentally friendly. That’s a really critical point for me and my colleagues here at Pedalnorth. Made from high quality italian fabrics, with seamless technology for this base layer, and with panels of diversified intensity without seams, using body mapping. It’s a highly technical garment, and it feels it – just awesome.

Alé have used technology from SENSIL® the “Nilit Heat” which is verified to absorb and manage moisture and neutralize odors due to the specially crafted coffee charcoal and oxide additive integrated into the yarn. It also absorbs and captures body heat for an extended period of time. During the rides I could feel its benefits. Excellent breathability and thermal insulation, plus antibacterial material. Also whenyou get sweaty from the ride, the fabrics dry quickly. Best of all… I still smell kind of okay

They used manufacturing technologies like circular Knitting and warp Knitting, or even weaving for the best comfort as possible. Different knitting techniques for different parts of the body, using the body mapping expertise gained form working with the top teams and fabric scientists. It’s all very technical these days, and it shows when riding, as I love wearing the base. Under arms and the lower back where we sweat most are made with a thicker material and different seam. It is very streatchable and light with only 175g becuase its main fabric is made from 58% polyamide, 30% polyprophylene, 6% carbon fiber, 6%elasthan. It feels like a second skin and looks terrific!

KLIMATIK GUSCIO RACING – Rainproof jacket woman

Another must have item on the list! I don’t go anywhere without a rainproof jacket. No matter where I go and what type of ride I do (mtb or road), the rain jacket is absolutely essential. It’s very light and I can fold and pack it in my rear pocket or in a tiny bike seat bag. It’s also very light at 180g, which is almost like a baselayer but protective like a shell. It can be worn in the summer too when you go to ride in the mountains. The minimum recommended temperatures to wear it for comfort are from 6°until 18°c. I know that Robert also loves the men’s version, and says the same as me regarding how useful it is. The main fabric it is composed from 73% polyamide, 27% elastane and the non-textile membrane is 100% polyurethane. Made with Idro-tech 2L (water column 15.000mm/24h), it keeps water sliding off, yet also gives super breathability. The zipper is coated waterproof and due to the thermo taped seams, it prevents water from entering. Around the waist, it has a nice silicone tape which keeps the jacket in place and is really comfortable. It finishes off with a small reflective logo on the lower back for high visibility in low-light conditions. I like the feel when I wear it, and even though it is water repellant, the material is stretchable enough to feel comfortable while I’m working hard and moving. It feels very light on my skin and best of all, it doesn’t flap when I ride, due to the slim fit design. Every detail is so well thought out and the superior quality fabrics used are super. It is without doubt, a must have in your back pocket for your adventures on two wheels.

Accesories to complete the outfit!

We ladies need the right accessories to complete the outfit. Thankfully, Ale make some of the very best. Here’s a few additions that I’ve been wearing along with the baselayer and waterproof jacket.

K-ATMO – Tubular for head/neck for cold temperatures and a wet climate. It’s super stylish and super easy to breathe thr,ough it but also protects from cold and humidity. It’s so good that I also use it when skiing!

NORDIK 2.0 – Gloves: These gloves are improved from previous versions, and are more windproof, with a softshell and an ergonomic fit. What’s really good,is that I can use my phone when wearing them, as they’re designed to use them on a touch screen device due to its touch-compatible printed anti-slip silicone on the palm – which actually works.

KLIMATIK – Shoe covers: These covers are my personal favorites, because it has a simple design with black matte color. It looks very good on the shoes, modern and stylishly simple, and gives the outfit a complete look! They’re also very protective, being super windproof and waterproof. Easy to put on, and easy to remove, they’re strong and have a super zip, and have just the right amount of stretch.

Ale have done a great job with their latest cold weather clothing and accessories. The quality does seem to be improving all the time, with body-mapping being really evident now. It’s always tricky in cold weather, staying comfortable whilst dry and warm and being stylish too. However, these new items from the Ale range are spot on, and I love them!

Whilst yes, I test lots of clothing brands, I must concede that I’m drawn to the Alè® quality, style and performance. Performance Jackets with Attitude

We were sent a selection of long-sleeved jackets and bib tights to test this year. For the menswear range, I tested the Alè® K-TORNADO 2.0, water repellent Long Sleeve jacket, and the stylishly modern PR-S MAGNETE jacket, which is designed for a temperature range of 2° to 12°. It’s the ideal choice for cyclists venturing into the cold, from autumn right through to some of the colder days of mid-spring – now, that’s a great value jacket for anyone.

Here in the Yorkshire Dales, the water repellency is vital for most of the year, and technical cycling jackets that do as they’re supposed to do, are always welcome.

With a technical lighter under-arm fabric also aiding ventilation, you’ve got a very comfortable and happy cyclist.

The collar is high, but not restrictive, and there’s a nice addition of an elasticated fabric strip inside of the zip, ensuring that winds don’t work their way through. When you turn the jacket ‘inside out’ and check out the finishing, it’s obvious that Alè® have taken their time to think about the various fabric choices and their uses, with the body mapping being visible. The overall finishing is top quality, and the jacket has strong and wide cuffs that sit comfortably, and 3 super-strong pockets (including an extra zipped pocket) for all those necessary goodies.

Style is Never Optional

The colour choices are simple and modern and are overlaid with exclusive graphics that are designed to fully embody the contemporary and technical Alè® look. Yes, this cold weather clothing essential from Italy has the perfect blend of performance and style, with comfort sewn in. It’s nicely finished off at the waist with my own personal favourite – a well cut and strong wide elasticated waistband, that adds to the overall look. Yes, the PR-S MAGNETE jacket is quite simply a very nice, high-performance garment that oozes lots of Italian style, and which will perform well for you, over several cold seasons.

KLIMATIK K-TORNADO 2.0 – Water repellent Long Sleeve Jacket

Looking next at the Klimatik K-Tornado 2.0, it’s another high-quality performance garment from Italy, as expected. It’s always nice when you can rely on a brand, and Alè® do just this – they give you confidence, which you need in the cold weather. Let’s see how this stylish jacket is put together then. It’s designed for cycling when the temperature is between 6° and 12°, again making it ideal at many times, if you happen to live in northern Europe .

It’s made from the usual technical fabrics, with superb multi-directional stretch and also has a fleecy feel to the inside, helping to keep you warm. The 3 layer fabric, with EVENT membrane and DWR treatment on the entire surface of the jacket, guarantees high breathability and lightness as well as excellent thermal insulation even in wet conditions. For all these features this jacket falls into the “long season” category for garments developed for intermediate climatic conditions as mentioned earlier – that means, anytime that it’s cold.

It’s stylishly cut to fit to form, meaning that if you look good, then this jacket will too. Stay off the cakes and stay on the pedals and you’ll be fine.

What I really like, is that Alè® have used a light mesh fabric behind the 3 rear pockets, that really do help with air circulation when you’re working hard. The waist has a really good quality fabric and silicone finish, and the soft mesh on the inside of the collar ensures that you’re comfortable around the neck. The design is simple and stylish, with reflective logos, and it’s simply a really nice, really warm and comfortable, good value jacket for those cold days on your bike.

Cycling Bib Tights by Alè®

Alè® are renowned for their performance bib tights, seriously. Yes, they don’t just make one simple design and splash different colours and names onto it, like too many brands. The very clever design team actually analyse cyclists in all environments and weathers, and produce a variety of options, ensuring that everyone has the right product for their own cycling needs. We looked at the Alè® CLIMA WARM PLUS tights and the PR-R MILD tights, which taken together, are the ideal 2 pairs to own for a wide range of conditions.

Alè® PR-R MILD

The PR-R MILD bib tights are, as the name suggests, designed to be used in slightly milder conditions – 6° to 17°, and when there’s maybe a cold rainstorm possible. Straight away, what you notice on these tights, is the extremely high-quality bib straps, mesh back and high-performance chamois pad. Along with the waterproof ankle cuff, it’s these well thought out touches that separate Alè® from their competitors; and, at this price point, you’re unlikely to the same quality finishes elsewhere. The fabric is styled to be functional and essential, with its minimal and ergonomic cuts, it can be worn during mid-Winter season and right through to mid-spring. The area above knees is embellished by a small, sublimated insert. The stretchy SuperRoubaix microfiber fabric has a slight compression effect that massages the muscle during the ride, and fits close the body and stretches easily, making them super comfortable all day long.

They’re quite simply, a very nice and very comfortable pair of bib tights, and they have definitely worked a treat and kept me warm in the harsh weather of the Yorkshire Dales and North Yorks Moors.

CLIMA WARM PLUS Bib tights

Finally, it’s onto the CLIMA WARM PLUS tights, which cater for a slightly damper ride. Designed to be the warmest and most protective bibs in the REV-1 series, they’re highly insulating, and they maintain a constant cycle of heat generation (up to 1°C) to actively keep you warm, and to reduce heat loss and stabilize a consistent temperature. They’re suggested to be worn between zero degrees and 10°, and they have all the usual quality finishes that you’d expect from one of the world’s top cycle clothing companies. Best of all, the B-HOT THERMO DWR and W-WIND 3L SHIELD DWR fabrics are treated and really do protect you from the rain, as I can testify from rides here in the Yorkshire Dales. They’re comfortable and super stylish, performance tights, which utilise all the Alè® body mapping expertise, to maximise your ride comfort – and we really like them.

The one thing that cyclists cannot rely on is the weather. Thankfully Alè® know this and they also know that we’re crazy enough to cycle outside on all manner of cold days, and through the rain and wind. That’s why they take so much time and effort to produce so many options for us cray cyclists! As a former climbing instructor and mountain man, staying dry is not only important to me – it’s critical in my book. I’ve seen people get hyperthermia and no, it’s not pleasant to witness. However, too often in cycling fashion, waterproof jackets can be an afterthought for brands. Thankfully, ALÈ from Verona in Italy think differently, and their very clever technical gurus and design team have developed the simply quite awesome ‘KLIMATIK GUSCIO THUNDERSTORM’. Having used some quite excellent jackets before, and some quite terrible waterproof jackets too, this stylishly modern jacket ticks all the right boxes and is most certainly, at the top of the list.

Yes, I know, somebody is going to tell me that it’s not the cheapest of waterproof jackets. However, you can either buy very badly twice and get very cold and very wet; or you can use some intelligence and invest in the best – and in our book, this is it. Let’s find out why.

Fabric Technology in Harmony with Style

Too often, cycling waterproofs are either too heavy and quite simply, uncomfortable, sweaty and unsightly, or they’re at the other end of the spectrum and wouldn’t keep a flea dry. Yes, they may pack away into the smallest of saddle bags, but they’re about as much use to you as a chocolate fire guard. ALÈ have gone to great lengths in designing the THUNDERSTORM jacket, and it rightly sits in their advanced KLIMATIK range – probably the finest range of weather fashion for cyclists currently available. The fabric used for the main body panels is a very soft and supple, 3-layer fabric with the ultra-compact and highly breathable EVENT DW STORM membrane. It’s so soft, to the point of being totally rustle-free – another bonus when riding, and with lots of free movement.

It has a high-quality and stylish design, fully welded seams, an overall DWR treatment, and an anatomical construction featuring stretch panels. You can also trust this jacket to block out the elements entirely, providing you with exceptional protection in inclement weather. Yes, we get a lot of that in the Yorkshire Dales and North Yorks Moors National Parks, where I do most of my riding.

The Appliance of Science – Wrapped in Comfort

When you look at the detail of the fabric chosen by ALÈ, you can see why this jacket performs so well out in the rain. EVENT make some of the most technical fabrics in the world, and they believe that waterproof/breathable should also mean dry and comfortable – thankfully a trait that ALÈ share. EVENT fabrics was the first to engineer and use patented Direct Venting technology, so rain can’t get in but sweat can get out instantly. Take this fabric technicity into the cycling world, where the hard-working rider is producing sweat all day long, and you’ve got a marriage made in heaven – a sweat-free zone, waterproof jacket, that simply beads away the rain and keeps you feeling dry and comfortable inside.

Underneath the arms and down the sides, ALÈ have used a lightweight mesh weave fabric to maximise air flow, adding to that all day rider comfort. The zipper is a strong and high-quality choice, with a fabric strip that covers over it, using a hook and eye (Velcro style) fastening to keep the rain at bay. There’s a high collar, which has a soft, woven fabric inner for added comfort, and a well thought out EVENT DW STORM membrane cover for your bottom, keeping you dry in the all-important race position. Cuffs are simple, unfussy and stylish, using a quality elastic to keep things in place., and at the waist, there’s the usual high-quality elastic and soft silicone strip.

Finally, the KLIMATIK GUSCIO THUNDERSTORM is completed with two excellent sized and strong mesh weave pockets at the rear, and some subtle and stylish branding. It’s a simple, modern, sleek design and fit’s just about right – not too tight, not to lose, and no rustle!

Simply the Best

I really can’t rate this jacket waterproof jacket by ALÈ high enough. It’s already become my ‘go-to’ clothing for rainy days. I can easily see why ALÈ rate it so highly within their advanced KLIMATIK clothing range. It’s the wet weather cycling equivalent of the ‘little black number’ that simply goes with everything! Trust me; coming from a resident of the Yorkshire Dales, and being a former mountain guy, that should be all the recommendation you need. Simplicity can be stylish and beautiful, and as a lady I like style. Alé from the Italian city of Verona understand this; it’s in their dna and their new winter Colour Block thermal jersey is testament to their dedication to style and performance. Alé produce well-made cycle clothing, with a simple aesthetic, like this winter and early spring Colour Block ladies jersey.

It’s a well-made garment and at the right price, which is what the intelligent cyclist wants and Alé have delivered with this single colour stylishly soft and warm, ergonomic thermal jersey. I tested the Celeste colour here in Transylvania, and so it needed to perform in the cold winter air and on tough climbs.

It won’t keep the rain at bay, but Alé produce specific waterproof jackets for that purpose. It’s designed to be a mid-thermal jersey and it does this very well, being light and too heavy. When wearing it, I found that the waist was held comfortably against me by a narrow elasticated and silicone lined hem and it stayed nicely in place when cycling. The arms are cut slim which is good for ladies slender arms, and the wrist cuffs are wide double lined material which utilise the elasticated properties of the fabric to stay in place and perform perfectly adequately. There’s a high cut and double thickness fabric collar to keep the neck warm and a full length super zipper. Alé are all about quality and they’ve ensured that all of the little things are well dealt with, including a good strong zipper.

The 3 rear pockets are deep and strong and stretchy, ensuring that you can fit lots on. On our rides they held things in place well and allowed easy access on the move. The whole cut of the jersey and the quality fabric means that whilst it’s super warm in temperatures just above zero (with the Alé carbon base layer underneath), movement is still easy and unrestricted. There’s a good choice of colour options, and the Celeste jersey that I used looked simple and very stylish – I loved it. The material has good stretch properties and sat nicely on me, allowing me unrestricted and comfortable movement. Breathability is adequate for the type of jersey. After all, it’s made for its thermal properties and it kept me warm.

The jersey did not have a small zipper pocket for keys and change, and it would benefit from this. Branding is limited, subtle and stylish, as Alé let the technicity, performance and general design and fit of the Colour Block jersey sells itself. Ultimately, on both long all day rides and short spins it certainly fits the bill as a great all around winter jersey, that’ll keep you warm, has adequate wind proofing, is very breathable for a thermal fabric and is super stretchy to fit your race ready form. It’s also the sort of jersey that’ll do quite nicely on cold or chilly early spring days and early autumn, although on the colder winter days with a strong and cold wind, you might need a little more protection.

This is a simple and effective long sleeve cycle jersey and it goes well with the rest of the Alé winter range. It will also work well for you in spring too, on the chilly days in the mountains. Yes, I liked it and it looked superb. I think that it’s a simple but effective all-rounder jersey that everyone should have in their cycling wardrobe. No, it does not have the waterproof protection that some may ask for, but it’s not designed for that. What it is designed for it does very well; keeping the cyclist warm and comfortable, but not being restrictive.

There’s a sense in the simplicity of the Alé Colour Block jersey and it’s priced just about right too, being a high quality winter jersey which I certainly love – and it looks super stylish

These bib tights are designed to go well with the Alé winter and cold weather jersey range. Thankfully, they also go well with many other jerseys and jackets from across their ranges. They’re form fitting, which means that you look great in them, and they also have good compression where needed, showing off your body and your style and allowing you to perform to your best. You simply look and feel great – and here’s why…

This stylish bib tight is a multi-tasker; it’s suitable for the long winter trainings, rides in the cold autumn and rides in early spring – especially in the mountain areas, where even spring can bring cold days. The material doesn’t fear humidity thanks to the ALE´ WR treatment and water repellency, meaning that they protect you against light rain, allowing you to simply enjoy the ride.

The panels are well cut and superbly stitched, with no sagging or chaffing. And ALE´ have used materials of varying thickness in different areas, giving ultimate performance. I love the wide elasticated braces, which combine the Ale´ elastic band with a central breathable mesh to help wicking and comfort. They help to keep the tights in place against me like a second skin. The lower leg panels sit tight against the calf and there’s string zips to fasten them. On the seat area, the stitching is super tough, with ALE´ using the W8 HF shammy. In use, the shammy is very comfortable and helps with moisture control on long hard rides, which I have lots of here in Transylvania. I like to feel good and look good, and everything about these bib tights matches my needs.

They’re very warm and comfortable on those long cold rides of early spring. I like that they are high waisted and fitted, giving a well contoured figure, showing me how I feel and adding to the comfort. The mesh between the straps also helps with ventilating the body sweat, keeping the area dry. What ALÉ have done really well, and which I truly do appreciate, and I also think it’s a signature from them, are the straps. Yes, it’s my favourite part of a perfect garment, and they feel so light and comfy, and stay in place, compared with other bib straps from other brands.

I’m a performance athlete, so my cycling kit needs to match my expectations. I’m also a woman, and that means that looking good and style is also important – thankfully ALÉ and I think alike

ALÉ have produced a quite simple but effective springwear jersey that also has its uses on those warmer days towards the end of winter, and on those colder summer days.

Whilst their own data suggests a temperature range between: 12º / 18º C , we’ve tested it in the single figures, and when combined with a good base layer, such as the ALÉ Carbon, it’s perfectly adequate. We often have to fill our cycling wardrobe with numerous jerseys for the different temperatures and conditions. What we like about the Summit jersy is that it seems to be useful on so many different days.

There’s nothing outstanding about the material. Really, there isn’t – but that’s what makes it so good. It does the job required of it very well and without causing a fuss. The thermal material is light (only 260 g) and of a high quality, and the cut and fit is a regular one, making it really comfortable. The fabric is called Termico felpato, and it’s light, strong, stretchy and warm. Best of all, it’s proved itself to be breathable too, which means that you want sweat and feel uncomfortable.

It has a high collar to keep the cold out, a strong zip, good quality wide cuffs and the obligatory silicone elastic around the hem. Finishing is excellent, as you’d expect from ALÉ, and the pockets at the back are large and don’t sag when filled with your spare tube, tools and snacks. The jersey isn’t tight and restrictive, nor is it baggy – it simply fits well and the material stretches where and when necessary, allowing freedom of movement.

The jersey comes in 3 colour options and has a simple yet modern branded design, meaning that you’ll look stylish as well as benefitting from the comfort. We tested the light yellow jersey, with a few subtle reflective elements, which is an ideal choice on the roads for visibility. It’s not a waterproof garment, so if the weather looks damp, you’ll need a waterproof on top. Pricewise, it’s a mid-range garment and won’t break the bank, but it’s a jersey that will get lots of use, due to it being so versatile.

Again, one extra area would be a useful small zipped pocket for keys – but this is a small point. The extra zipped pocket is more and more useful these days, and it’s a shame that it’s missing. However, for those days when you just want something warm and simple, and which truly is versatile, then the ALÉ Summit jersey will fit the bill and keep you stylish along the way. And, in truth, what more do you need from a good long sleeved cycling jersey.

Base layers have come on leaps and bounds in recent years. It’s not simply about keeping you warm, as the latest garments also manage moisture and provide useful compression and other technical features. Putting carbon into material isn’t new, but how ALÉ have done it within their latest cycling range is, reducing aroma from the body’s hard work as you cycle along.

Regulating temperature means we drink less and perform better – marginal gains remember. Yes, the design of base layers has changed from simply being a woollen weave, to now drawing on the technical thinking for fabrics that was once reserved for one or two ‘out there brands’. Italian cycling brand Alé is at the cutting edge and have designed this base layer to move moisture in a way that it helps to regulate your temperature, keeping you performing well. Sweat is good is used correctly, and this top makes sure that this happens. The materials have changed and they’ve even added carbon to the mix for extra strength. The weave has changed, now bringing in several different weaves within the one garment, to move the sweat away from one area in such a way that it benefits your whole body as it wicks, and ensuring that it doesn’t simply soak into the cloth in that one place.

On the roads of the Yorkshire Dales and the Vale of York, where the cold winds blow and bite at the rider, this well thought out body hugging baselayer from Alé has kept the cold at bay, with its high cut rounded collar and tightly woven cuffs at the sleeves. It caresses the body; yes … it truly does and makes you feel kind of special simply to be wearing it.

The material is soft, very stretchy and very strong, able to be pulled in all directions, ensuring movement isn’t restricted and yet feeling simply very nice underneath your winter jerseys and jackets as it touches and stays put. The rest is up to you on how good you look, but this baselayer is definitely made to hug. What I like about this base layer is that it looks and feels fo good that it’s suitable to use underneath the ALÉ Cycling Gilet in spring too, keeping you warm and stylishly modern on those colder spring days in the hills or when the wind blows across the flat open plains.

If you buy one base layer for colder rides, then this excellent garment from Alé ought to be on your list. It works across a varied spectrum of temperatures, from a warm winter day, to those with an icy chilling wind in spring. On the style front, it’s typically Italian, being made from quality materials, all well cut and superbly sewn, with a simple design that oozes style and balances this with excellent body fitting comfort.

Looking after your ALÉ Kit

Cycle clothing is made from techical fabrics and it’s vital that they are properly looked after, especially when washing.

This short video from ALÉ is a useful guide to help you to make the most of this great kit and to ensure that it keeps on performing long into the future. In particular, always read the labels and make sure that you don’t wash mixed colours. Don’t wash at too high a temperature and turn the garments inside out before placing them into the washing machine.
