Their lightweight Malibu windproof jacket is a great example of the Biehler approach to cycle clothing, being super technical, super strong, a super cool design and fitting well with other garments across the current range.

The lightand top quality material is tightly woven and does the windproofing job well, also keeping a light shower at bay when required. And, for the wicking and breathability, Biehler have used their mesh based cloth to the side panels, under the arms and across the rear shoulders. A heavier cloth at the front is complimented by lighter sleeves that are cut tight and shaped for racing, along with the form fitting overall design.

There’s a large zipped pocket to the rear, in which you can either fold the jacket or keep a few goodies.

When we look at a what a high performance jersey requires, the list is complete on this terrific short sleeved offering.

Biehler have used a heavier weave lycra at the front, but still light, to maximise performance while still keeping the cold wind out, and it does exactly this.  To the rear is a light weave mesh material to help breathability and moisture wicking, and this is complemented on the side panels, with an even lighter mesh weave, that is continued to the sleeves. The fully constructed sleeves are formed from an elasticated cloth that clings tightly and aids aerodynamics. Biehler even tested this jersey in a wind tunnel in order to maximise the design.

In use it fits perfectly and performs like a second skin, which is the intention of the design on this high performance jersey. And, despite the lightweight nature of these superb technical materials, they’re super strong and stretchy, meaning that it makes you look and feel like a cyclist.

To aid the dedicated rider even more, there’s a new sleek pocket design, with sloped access on the outer two pockets, so that items are quickly retrieved. The collar is likewise cut low and tight to the lower neckline.

These bibs are a great example of the trickle down advancements, and are super comfortable on both long and short rides. Due to the underestimated styling too, these shorts go with lots of the jerseys in the new range, meaning that you won’t have to fork out lots of money for different colour shorts. Time to take a look at the technical bits then…

The multiple panel race cut is made in the main from their high tech Schoeller fabric, which is extremely strong and stretchy, and in use has superb compression. It fits tightly and makes you feel like a true pro racer, with the sleek black design being finished of with subtle red and blue trim on the legs. The extra wide terraband on the legs means that they stay firmly in place and add to the overall compression effect of the shorts. The technical material chosen by Biehler also provides UV protection of 30+, which whilst not often used in the Dales, will be in sunnier places!

In terms of the uppers, Biehler have opted for a tough and highly breathable black mesh, which stretches nicely and whilst strongly elasticated, it doesn’t pull into the shoulders. How does it all perform then? It’s truly excellent and can’t be faulted.

The mesh allows for excellent air circulation, as does the lighter weave of 4 way stretch fabric used elsewhere. It’s simply a well thought out pair of bib shorts.

I’ve worn these shorts in wind and rain and they dry out nicely, staying firmly in place without rubbing. I’ve also worn them on warmer days where I haven’t overheated either, and the finely woven mesh back, does its job of allowing me to breathe and wick away moisture very well indeed.

Now for the pad though – that most critical element. Biehler never scrimp on the pad, and these are no exception. It’s a multi-density pad for longer rides as expected, but it’s really slim, meaning that it merges nicely into the short and won’t make your bum look big! Eating too much will, but don’t blame Biehler for that! All stitching is of course flat-locked and the shorts wash well and should last a long time.

The legs are held firm with a wide powerband, rubberised just enough on the inside to ensure that fitting is firm too. The last thing any cyclist wants is the bib shorts riding up and moving around, and this is well dealt with by Biehler.

Moving to the critical area of the pad, as always, Biehler have chosen a quality Carbonium 4D layered and sectional chamois, ideal for even a long day on the hills, and great for soaking up an6 moisture when riding in the heat of summer. It’s light for the performance provided though, and is extremely soft. All stitching is flat-locked to ensure no rubbing, and shows off the quality that Biehler put into all their garments.

Biehler from Germany like a challenge though, and these Matrix B-Powerful bibs have in excess of 10 cuts of material cleverly stitched together, providing the ultimate fit, comfort and compression; and the way in which the stitching has been cleverly woven into the design adds to the stylish look, producing a vibrant and modern look that sets you apart in the peloton. It’s all neatly finished with the Biehler logo down the side, which you’ll be proud to display, as this is a high end garment for racing or the keen hobbyist out for a recreational ride.

Biehler state that they’ve used 5 different materials on the bibs, so being picky, we checked it out, and sure enough… There’s a mesh styled Matrix Aero fabric element going on down the side of the legs, allowing more breathability, the usual hard-wearing areas covered by 4 way stretch PowerLycra Endurance.

Compression materials have been carefully chosen and situated to maximise Endurance assistance, and in practice this is actually noticeable. I like to work hard on the hills, meaning that by the end of the ride I’m just plain tired; but these bibs do provide welcome assistance. We’ve even used them through the winter, paired with Biehler and other branded warmers, and they’ve kept me warm, drying off well when required to. The material balance is spot on, meaning that they’re also very breathable on the warmer days.

Made from two highly thermal materials, the jacket is warmer on the back where you’re definitely going to feel things, and nicely breathable, with a good balance between keeping the cold out and letting you work hard. Biehler have thought about their choice of materials, ensuring that the moisture you create is passed quickly outside. The panels are cut for a good race fit, meaning it looks stylish, and clings neatly to you, allowing a rain jacket to fit nicely on top when the wet stuff falls. The pockets are superbly stitched into the garment, providing ample storage , and our only addition would be a zip pocket for keys, but it’s a minor storage point in a modern world.

The collar is high cut, adding to the warm and snug feeling , and the good quality full length zipper is also designed to keep the breeze at bay. I’m a stickler for good zips, – it’s just my thing I’m afraid – so it’s reassuring to see time spent by designers on this point. Down at the waist there’s a good quality gripper to hold things firm, and the cuffs are as the rest of this garment, simple and functional in a comforting way. There’s nothing fancy about this jersey. It just is what you need and what you’d expect for a winter long sleeve.
