Off-road adventure in Transylvania, for 2025!

Explore the Fagaras Mountains by Bike

We’re really excited to announce that we’ll be working closely with the team at TRIADA and the ‘Trilogy of the Trails’, to develop a 4-day epic off-road route for gravel riders and mountain bikers. The route will explore the amazing trails in and around Paltinis and Avrig, and the Fagaras Mountains (part of the Carpathians), taking you into the vast mountain forests, the open mountain meadows, and riding in singletrack heaven beneath some of the beautiful mountain peaks of Transylvania.

With Romania’s oldest mountain resort at Paltinis as the base and starting point for this ride, being only 30km from the World Heritage city of Sibiu, you’ll be able to fly here from all over the world, to take on the Trails of Triada’  at your own relaxed pace, all year long – dependent on the mountain weather of course! Yes, it’s an opportunity for gravel bikers and mountain bikers from all over the world, to challenge yourself on unique mountain trails, as you ride a future classic route, on your own epic adventure in Transylvania!

A Route for all Riders

We want this new off-road ride to be accessible to all levels of rider, and for both gravel bikes and mountain bikes. As we develop our route, we’ll be taking time to ensure that there’s sections to take you onto your own specific adventure option – chilled out trial options and some epic technical options too.

The benefit of riding here in Transylvania is that we have the largest undiscovered area of mountain forests and trails in Europe. We’re rightly described as Europe’s last great wilderness, and we’re also home to amazing cultural centres such as Sibiu – a magical, medieval city, and one of the most beautiful small cities in Europe.

We want to include ideal gravel bike specific sections, making sure that you can ride and smile all day long – for 4 whole days. And, we’ll be bringing you a selection of the very best accommodation options, trail support and local guides too. ‘On the trails of TRIADA’ will be a truly epic challenge, that will promote this beautiful mountain region, and bring it to the attention of more people, seeking to rediscover life on 2-wheels!

The Sweet Sound of Singletrack Heaven

There’s nothing finer on a mountain bike, than sweeping along sweet singletrack trails, with the rocky ground crunching beneath the wheels; or swooping through the forests on tight and twisting trails that seem endless. Thankfully, both Paltinis and Avrig have hundreds of kilometres to explore; all within easy reach of Sibiu as a great travel and logistics hub. Both Paltinis and Avrig have great accommodation options too, for all budgets.

As we develop this new and exciting project, in time for spring 2025, we’ll also be looking at the option to add an introduction ride day, making the tour a 5-day ride direct from the centre of Sibiu, warming up on the rolling trails that take you alongside the scenic Romanian countryside, as you climb into the mountains and head to Paltinis and the start of the epic ‘Trails of TRIADA’ multi-stage adventure route.

Inspiring, Encouraging & Influencing Adventure

Working closely with the TRIADA team and Tudor Oprea, this 4-day route will ensure that we continue to inspire, encourage and influence the next generation of cyclists seeking adventure. We also want to promote the amazing culture, history and countryside of Transylvania and Sibiu County – one of the most spectacular areas of Europe. The ‘Trails of TRIADA’ route will actively promote a healthy lifestyle, and encourage people to explore the countryside in a balanced way, promoting sustainability tourism. We’ve only got one world, so let’s look after it and see what it has to offer us all. Take a trip to Transylvania in 2025, and ride with Tudor and the team in Europe’s last great wilderness!

Transylvania Mountain Biking in the Paltinis Hills

The mountains around the Paltinis resort are covered in magnificent forests, with isolated meadows and mountain tops. There’s a wealth of trails to explore, and this one is just a short distance from historic Sibiu, a World Heritage Site, and its endless accommodation options. It’s a great base for a superb cycling holiday, with its own international airport only a 15 minute taxi ride from the centre of the old town.

This ride starts from the old Saxon village of Rasinari and climbs steadily towards Paltinis, whilst not visitng the resort. Instead, it continues around the mountian tops, before descending on a fast and sometimes technical trail, back to Rasinari.

Route Information

Stats  31 km  999 metres

Refreshments & Where to Stay

Sibiu is nearby, and as a world renowned tourist hotspot, it has everything that you need: great hotels and apartments, great places to eat and a super nightlife. On the ride, take snacks and drinks with you, as this is a mountain area.

Character

This route has a long and winding climb into the hills, that requires a good level of fitness. However, your efforts are rewarded, with unbelievable views and an epic and extra long descent. There’s a few technical sections, where you need to take care, but it’s a case of letting the bike have some fun 😉

Route

1. Make sure to park sensibly in the village of Rasninari, and then follow the trail that heads alongside the Steaza River and climbs.

2. When you are 2 km from Paltinis, the tracks  merge and you need to head left and keep climbing.

3. Follow the high trail as it passes mountain meadows and skirts between Varful Plaiului and Varful Barnelor. The trail then twists into the trees and leads you back to Rasinari

Romania and the area of Transylvania have some of the most beautiful forested areas and awesome mountains in Europe – if not the world. This two-day mountain bike trip takes in the mountain area of Brucegi and the Omu Peak, a famous Romanian summit. The Strunga saddle is an awesome descent, that leads you into the historic and famed resort of Bran and its castle – so bring garlic 😉

If you’re looking for a real mountain biking adventure in Europe, then this ride in the mountains of Transylvania is definitely one to do!

Stats  98 km  2994 metres

Refreshments & Where to Stay

We’ve marked several mountain huts on our interactive map, including the Cabana Omu and the Diham Mountain Hut. The historic resort of Bran also has several options and lots of places to get food too.

Character

This is a tough mountain biking route in Transylvania and its mountains, so be prepared. Take food and drink, the correct clothing and make sure that your bike is well serviced, and carry spares with you. Long climbs and epic mountain trails are blended with forest tracks and technical riding. It’s a route for experienced riders, and you may want to take a local guide.

Note: This area has wild bears

The Route

There are few places more beautiful than Romania and the mountains of Transylvania. This route begins in the resort of Sinaia and climbs all the way to the famed Omu Peak. At times you’ll need to bike and hike due to the steepness.

The Strunga saddle area is reached and you eventuall ride this, going from rocky and open mountain trails, with technical loose and tricky singletrack at times, into the lower forests, where trails twist and turn among the trees to Bran. Having fed yourself and maybe stayed overnight – not at Bran Castle 😉 – the trails are easier and more flowing now, as they lead you to Diham and a possible stay at the mountain hut (if you didn’t stop at Bran).

From Diham, you can either take the forested trails down (shown on trails with blue triangle – not recommended in the dark) or the asphalt to Busteni and then onto Sinaia.

The Best Roads & Wild Mountain Trails

Cycling in Romania is a delight. There are a lot of beautiful trails or roads in the mountains and in the forests. The nature is wild, and not modified by mankind. I live in the heart of Romania, Transylvanian region, in a small town named Sibiu. The city is surrounded by mountains which are not so far away and very accessible to get there by car or bus.

My favorite climb is on the Transfagarasan road to Bâlea Lake. This spectacular ribbon of road was built between 1970 and 1974, and has some of the most historic tourist attractions in Romania nearby. The fortress of Poienari at 1480 metres was built in the 13-14th centuries, extended later by Vlad the Impaler, also known as Dracula. Next is the famous Vidraru Dam, one of the largest dams in the world and in several movies. The glacial lake of Balea, freezes in the cold season, when a church and a hotel made of ice are built each year.

BIking in Beautiful Romania

The Transfagarasan road itself, is approximately 90km long, and is a great attraction for tourists, due to its breath-taking landscapes, being totally sublime and spectacular for visiting. The route is very special, due to the scenery encountered, with so many dangerous curves that twist and turn and challenge you, high level differences, cliffs and gullies as well as steep waterfalls.

The road climbs to an altitude of 2,042 metres (6,699 ft), making it the second highest mountain pass in Romania after the Transalpina. Riding from the centre of Sibiu, taking in the road and the lakes and forests, makes a great ride of over 155 miles, very challenging for a real two day adventure, as part of a Romania Bikecation. And, at the end of each day, you can enjoy the Romanian hospitality in our historic towns and cities, such as my home city of Sibiu – a World Heritage Site.

Nearby Paltinis, is also the oldest mountain resort in Romania, and home to great mountain biking routes. It’s also a venue for one of the Triada MTB  race events annually, so come and join us in our majestic mountains and ride Romania, and discover a new world of cycling opportunities in our magical mountains!
