The Furka Pass is a truly legendary Swiss mountain pass that gained fame after it was featured in the James Bond movie “Goldfinger” from 1964. Bond raced an Aston Martin DB5 against a Ford Mustang, with epic images on screen as they climbed this scenic road, located in the Uri/Valais region of Switzerland. All these years later, this timeless landscape is still a draw for both drivers and cyclists.

Thankfully, the Furka Pass is situated close to other scenic roads, meaning that you can tick off a few classic climbs in one ride. If you approach it from north, you might want to ride over the Grimsel Pass before arriving at the bottom of Furka. However, we’ve started this ride from the south, riding from Wassen and in through Realp before some serious climbing begins.

As you reach the now closed Hotel Belvedere, which still stands, take a moment to enjoy the spectacular view and to grab a coffee. Then, it’s time for more climbing, as you look down at the valley and Rhone River that cuts through it.

It’s now time to tackle the Grimsel Pass, with a short descent before you begin. Then, drop downs long mountain descent to Innertkirchen, where you can take a break and maybe grab food, before the climbing begins again. The final climb is the Susten Pass, at a height of 2260 metres, connecting Innertkirchen to Wassen, with a 300 metre tunnel along the way.

Enjoy the views from the summit, before a long descent to Wassen and a well earned celebratory meal.
