In terms of the sporting world, Greece needs no introduction – after all, they gave us the Olympics. Remember, that unrivalled gathering of athletes that brought us an epic road race in Paris in 2024, and which subsequently gave a new and more exciting format to the final stage of the Tour de France. However, Greece isn’t just historically influential in global sport; it also hosts an epic annual UCI stage race – the ΔΕΗ Tour of Hellas – which in May 2026 will be leading some of the world’s top cycling teams and riders around the unique landscapes and unparalleled history and culture of this foundational cradle of Western civilization.

Yes, Greece is a place where sports and culture have woven a tapestry of excellence for thousands of years, and which ought to be on the bucket list of every cycling fan and cycling tourist. The 2026 ΔΕΗ Tour of Hellas is your opportunity to take some of the world’s finest scenes of ancient history, as the riders sweep through timeless landscapes in pursuit of their own epic palmares.

Why Tour of the Hellas

If you haven’t heard of the ΔΕΗ Tour of Hellas, then you need a brief guide and focus on the history of Greece – for Hellas in simple terms is the native terms for Greece. It was originally used to refer to all lands inhabited by the Hellenes (Greeks) – those people descended from the mythological figure Hellenas. The ΔΕΗ Tour of Hellas is your opportunity to join us here and to explore a wealth of Greek history and culture, over 5 days of action and some of world’s best cycle racing, between 6th and 10th May 2026.

No other global cycling event takes in surroundings with such a wealth of historical sights, as the best cyclists in the pro peloton race between stages such as Karpenissi to Larissa, the capital and largest city of the Thessaly region in Greece and known as the coffee capital of Greece. We all know that coffee and cycling go together like Greece and history, and so we’d love to share our cafe culture with you, in Larissa at the end of stage 2!

Larissa is a place which gave us Achilles and Hippocrates – the father of medicine – and which on the 7th May, 2026 will give us the opening sprint finish to our epic cycle race, as the peloton climb the Pindus Mountains before dropping onto the lush green plains of mainland Greece, surrounded by historical sights and scenes at every twist and turn in the road.

This opening stage of the 2026 ΔΕΗ Tour of Hellas is a cycling tourism dream too, and route that many will want to return to and ride themselves. And yet, this is simply the opener of a world class UCI cycling stage race, filled with some of the most beautiful cycling landscapes in Europe, as the riders challenge themselves over 5 epic days of world-class racing, towards Athens.

Hellas Tour history

As well as having a greater wealth of history than any other western civilisation – being permanently fixed at the top of the history Premier League, to coin a sporting phrase – the history of this constantly developing UCI stage race is inspiring. It began life in 1968, inspired by leading world cycling events elsewhere, and was titled as being the ‘Tour of Ancient Monuments’, beginning in Athens and taking riders – as it does today – on a literal tour of the cultural heritage of the country.

It became a part of the UCI Europe Tour event in 2005, elevating its status, and a hiatus between 2012 and 2022, the Tour was started up once more, in 2022 under its current format, as a UCI 2:1 race, the ‘ΔΕΗ Tour of Hellas’, drawing on its unrivalled history and landscapes to attract the top teams in Europe and elsewhere.

Cycling sport in Greece and cycle tourism

For a mainland European nation, Greece is more accessible than many people think, and it’s cycling tourism potential is vast. It has the infrastructure, the roads, the world-leading experience of hosting tourists from across the globe, and some of the most iconic historic monuments in the world, such as the Parthenon, on Athens’ Acropolis, and temples elsewhere such as the first ancient theatre of Larissa, constructed at the beginning of the 3rd century BC, and which will be a feature at the end of stage 2 on the 2026 ΔΕΗ Tour of Hellas.

Yes, with its unrivalled cultural heritage and history, alongside being a top European destination for tourism, Greece is waiting to welcome cycle tourists, before, during and after the racing in early May. You can ride on the same roads as the world’s top teams and take in the sights and hospitality of Hellas and the Hellenes people.

During the ΔΕΗ Tour of Hellas in May 2026, they will be creating events in the cities that will be hosting the stages, introducing and promoting the sport of cycling among the communities and creating a cycling legacy. Gravel adventure in the Austrian Tyrol

This tough but beautiful ride of 54 km takes you through magnificent scenery in the Austrian Tyrol, exloring the gravel tracks in the Tannheim Valley of the Austrian mountains. The route takes you up past the Haldensee (lake) and climbs the epic Krinnenspitze for amazing mountain views.

Forests and alpine meadows mix with 14% climbs and descents on this Tyrolean gravel route, requiring good fitness and bike skills. Yet, the rewards are well worth the effort, as yu explore the beauty of the Tannheim Valley and alpine scenery.

Route Information

Stats: 54 km 1,675 metres

Refreshments & Where to Stay: The Tanheim Valley has numerous options for accommodation at all price points. Likewise, places to eat are easy to locate and the food choices are excellent.

Character: Tough and steep, with a technical descents. Some bike-hiking might be found on the steeper climbs, but take the climbs as a challenge. The trails are excellent gravel. Do not tackle if your actual fitness and skill level is not up to this. However, if you’re ready for the adventure, it is an epic ride!

Route

The route – albeit seeming reasonable in length, is a tough but rewarding day in the mountains of the Tyrol. Excellent fitness is required, as is the ability to carry out trailside repairs for yourself.

Starting off from Schattwald, the route climbs initially, before dropping you down towards Tannheim.
Haledensee is soon reached, as you skirt this picturesque lake in the mountains.
Then, after 17.9km – at Nesselwangle – a steep series of switchbacks lead you upwards for 4.5 km, before more descending and riding through the trees on excellent tracks that rise and fall randomly.
At 43km you reach the quaint village of Berg, and its wealth of tradiational chalets and farms. The climbing begins once more, as the road takes you into the hills and trees. Tracks wind there way around the valley, before dropping you back onto the valley road at Schattwald where refreshments can be taken if needed, whilst you enjoy the epic views across the valley.

Finding my cycling soul

Travelling is a part of the cycling culture – ultimately, it’s what our bike was designed for. That simple journey from A to B, to which we add our own personality. We’re all unique – like bikes.

Yes, we may look the same: two legs, two wheels, arms, handlebars, a saddle and… well, you get the picture. However, it’s what we don’t see that matters – on the inside, of us and on the bike.
I started my competitive sporting life as a snowboarder, not a cyclist. An horrific accident and serious injury put paid to that, though; which is I why I then took up triathlon, competing at age-group world-level successfully, before cycling took a hold of me and opened up that spirit of exploration that is a part of who I am. I love using my bike to challenge myself, yes; but, also to explore the world in which we live and to feel the warm breeze on my face and the excitement that pumps through my veins.

I guess that I’m like my TIME Scylon: I look one way, but when you turn the pedal, a whole new personality emerges, and it’s more fun-loving than you imagined, with a strength and toughness that defies the image – and yes, fast, because ultimately, I’m still an athlete who loves performance. If I’d had a bike made for me, it would have been the Scylon. It’s become a part of me now; part of my cycling soul, and we’re off to explore Alicante together.

Riding Alicante: Heat, Mountains, and Desert Roads

Alicante in Spain is renowned the world over, as a holiday hotspot. However, are you aware how great the road cycling is in this majestic Spanish resort? Probably not, as too often, the focus of cyclists when travelling to Spain is the Islands, or Girona. However, Alicante has everything to offer, including roads that are less filled with other riders, a quieter feeling and sublime views. It’s nestled amongst coastal mountains, with exceptional roads; which is why I took myself on a cycling trip there, recently.

Yes, Alicante is full of surprises. Everyone knows the beaches, of course. Few people, however, expect the wild, open mountains that lie just a short ride inland. Here, away from the coastal crowds, the land feels more like Texas or the rising hills of Africa than Spain — dry terraces, rocky peaks, and a sky that seems endless. As an easily excited cycling tourist, and with my Scylon accompanying me, I set out to test it and to explore the climbs of Tiger Pass, Puerto de Tudons, Puerto del Collao, and Puerto de Benifallim. It turned into one of the most beautiful and most unforgettable rides I’ve ever done. One of those rides that remain unexpected and treasured, at the forefront of our memories for a long time. That causes the blood to flow faster and our bodies to feel lighter, as our eyes open up to the landscape and our heart feeds on the emotions.

I’m unashamedly a spiritual and emotion athlete. Away from cycling, I’m a designer and also a painter, using color to carry forward the images I create. So yes, when I’m cycling, I totally immerse myself in the landscape. For now, though, it’s time to ride, as me and my bike head off into the Alicante mountains, exploring this beautiful corner of mainland Spain. Yes, it’s time to ride!

Character

A long but rewarding route, with climbs and mountain views views, and the sun high in the sky. Road surface conditions are superb.

The route combines inland climbs, fast descents, scenic towns, anddeserted roads, too. The sun beats down at time, so wear sun screen and take on board lots of fluids. Whether you’re chasing fitness, a photo-worthy adventure, or pure road cycling pleasure, this ride offers it all.

Route

Puerto de Tudons (1,025 m)

My day started from Alcoy heading towards the Puerto de Tudons. Around 8 km with a 4% average and at a 7-9% maximum steepness – steady, but brutal in the heat. My bottles turn warm within minutes, and every patch of shade feels like a gift. The bike is looking after things though – light and responsive, pushing me to hold a rhythm even when the heat tried to break me. Once I settled into the heat and the climb, it becomes a route to smile on; with the challenge being a positive one, as the Scylon eats up the distance, keeping me comfortable and focused. I have fluids and nutrition and views, and I have a purpose, as the sun beats down on me. I’m renewing my cycling soul, away from the crowds, and the freedom that rushes through my body as the gentle breeze touches my face, reminds me why we ride!

Tiger Pass – Safari Aitana

After this, I it was time to take on Tiger Pass, near Safari Aitana. The landscape here was raw, exposed and bare, with scrubland stretching out like a cycling safari. The roads are well-laid though, as they continually twist upwards under a blazing sun; the kind that makes the tarmac shimmer like a mirage. It felt wild, different, and slightly surreal — not Europe as most people imagine it. Yes, I had taken on enough fluids, and I was not hallucinating! It was a route that needed focus, and set myself – rider and Scylon as one, as the cranks turned and the views opened up. Before too long, it was done, and it was time for another Alicante cycling challenge.

Puerto del Collao (890 m)

This climb was shorter but nastier. The Collao throws itself upwards in ramps of 13–16%, hitting you straight in the face, like walls. The road looks at you and challenges you, as it rises in threatening, jagged steps, but thankfully with some downhill sections on which to relax.

Ultimately though, as I mentioned earlier – I’m an athlete at heart, and have competed across the world. The road and I challenge each other, as I turn the cranks and remain focused and positive – this is my choice and want to see the summit views.

From the summit, the landscape opens wide and I was rewarded, finally. Beneath me were terraced valleys with olive trees and jagged limestone ridges, stretching far into the haze. It all looked magical and timeless – like a movie with a Spanish guitar playing softly and lyrically in the background – and no, once again I am not hallucinating! I’m immersing myself in the cycling experience, as I explore Spain and explore myself and my cycling limits. Spanish. Views and feelings like this, need to be taken slowly and allowed to wash over you; and, after all, I have TIME on my side!

Puerto de Benifallim (1,020 m)

The final challenge for me was Puerto de Benifallim. It’s a short, steadier climb that winds through a pine forest before breaking into rocky open ground above 1,000 m. The altitude brought a whisper of cooler air, but the sun still pressed hard, testing me physically and mentally.

Surviving the Heat

At 40°C, the fountains in the village squares became my salvation. The brutality of the climb was done for a while, and I didn’t just fill my bottles — I soaked myself completely. Yes, jersey, shorts, head, everything.

It was the only way to keep going! Having competed in triathlon all over the world, I know how heat can affect athletes, and this was something that only a fully dipped and watered head can solve! Each time I left a fountain dripping, the cool water evaporating instantly in the dry air, and it felt like a reset button for the next climb – the next challenge.

Descents Like a Bullet

The reward for every ascent, however, were the epic descents to look forward to. The Scylon is designed to be responsive and light, and it came into its own on the descending. I was able to relax and aim the bike, as I moved by tired body around the bike, in harmony with the curving road. Long, sweeping, and fast, cutting turns through a barren landscape, with nothing but the wind in my ears and on my face. The wheels hummed steadily, and the bike felt like a bullet, holding the line and giving me that much-needed confidence in the corners, as the road twisted and turned like a ribbon, loosely strewn across the mountains.

Epic rides of exploration

What makes Alicante special is the contrast. In one ride, you pass through desert scrub, thick pine forests, rocky ridgelines, and timeless stone villages. It feels like riding through an old Western movie set — only, with your bike as the horse, carrying you across the landscape. No, it’s not the Alps nor the Pyrenees. It’s harsher, hotter, and maybe even more rewarding, emotionally.

Alicante is a place where survival, speed, and scenery collide, and it leaves you with memories that burn long after the ride is done. For me, it was special and it tested me and the bike. Yes, Alicante is a place for TIME travellers! It’s a place that should be on every cyclist’s bucket list, as you explore the variety and exceptional terrain that Spain has to offer for cycling. Too often, people head for the obvious Spanish locations, when you can pause time and find one the best places for cycling in Spain, away from the crowds.

I love my bike – it’s like me. TIME like to be different; to show their uniqueness. They look for excellence in everything – like me. Ultimately, we like to explore our limits – because the resultant feeling is unequalled, and it reminds us of one very important thing – that we’re alive!

3-Day Experience in Transylvania

This is a simple account of three days on trails between mountain peaks and old villages — where every pedal stroke finds its rhythm and your breath blends with the scent of pine. However, there is nothing simple about the nature of the ride or the wealth of history and culture that it embraces. It’s a trip into the mountains of Transylvania that you can participate in, too – simply by reading on and then contacting me – Alex – and joining me in these magical mountains!

The Sibiu region hides an impressive network of mountain biking routes, from gentle climbs through cool forests to technical descents along alpine ridges. Whilst away from the more common areas of the European Alps, it is part of the same extensive mountains, and has a feeling of wilderness that is long missing from elsewhere. During these three days on the bike, we discovered not only the beauty of the landscapes but also the perfect balance between effort, nature, and peace.

It’s an adventure that blends sport with exploration — leaving behind not just tire marks, but memories that stay long after you’ve stepped off the bike. Is there anything better for a biking adventure!

Few places in Romania – or indeed Europe – offer such diversity within such a small radius. In a single day, you can climb through beech forests toward the Cindrel peaks, descend into Saxon villages, and stop at a mountain sheepfold where time seems to have stood still.

Sibiu, as a World Heritage Site city, offers a rare mix of untouched nature, good infrastructure, and an active MTB community, developing a trail network that renews the spirit of that mountain biking sub-culture of years gone by – but with technology attached. The trails are varied — from natural singletracks and scenic ridge roads, to technical sections that challenge even experienced riders. The scenery also constantly shifts: shaded forests, blooming meadows, crystal streams, and breathtaking views of the Făgăraș Mountains.

But perhaps the best reason to ride here is the feeling of freedom. Between mountains and villages, with each kilometer becoming a story, and every stop — a meeting with true stillness.

Day 1: Creasta Porumbelului Ridge

A classic mountain bike route near Sibiu — ideal for riders seeking authentic ridge trails and panoramic mountain views.

Distance: 55 km Elevation gain: 1000 m

The ride starts at the foot of the mountains, near the ancient Dacian fortresses, and climbs along the old Roman road toward the highest-inhabited village in Transylvania — where shepherding has shaped generations.

Gradually, the route reaches open ridgelines with sweeping views of the Cindrel, Șureanu, and Făgăraș Mountains — a ride that perfectly blends history, nature, and adventure.

Day 2: Păltiniș – The Best Trails

Păltiniș is Sibiu’s iconic mountain resort — the oldest in Romania, founded in 1894. From here, some of the most spectacular MTB trails in Transylvania begin: natural singletracks, alpine panoramas, and thrilling descents that test your skills.

You can start the ride either from the base of the climb or directly from the resort. Both routes take you up to Vârful Bătrâna (1,900 m), offering 360° views over Transylvania. From the summit, descend via the Bătrâna Trail, climb back to the Repeater Hill, and choose between Releu Trail, Mitraliera, or the local favorite — Rollercoaster, one of the most scenic and flowing descents in the area.

This tour can easily be split into two shorter days, depending on your fitness and schedule.

Long route: 60 km – 1,700 m elevation
Short route: 40 km – 1,000 m elevation

Day 3: The Hills Around Rășinari

Distance: 40 km Elevation gain: 1,500 m

Rășinari is a vibrant village that’s becoming a hub for outdoor sports. Local events and MTB races are now part of the community’s rhythm, and many riders come here to train on the surrounding trails. Although the route doesn’t reach high altitudes, the climbs are demanding — requiring a decent level of fitness — and the descents reward you with pure, flowing fun through meadows and forest paths.

Three Days, Three Mountains

Riding Romania with Peter from Ireland

Some trips stand out not just for the trails, but for the stories that unfold along the way. Our first trip with Peter from Ireland was one of those special ones — three unforgettable days of riding across the best trails around Păltiniș and Rășinari, filled with breath-taking views, great conversations, and the kind of mountain magic that reminds us why we love doing this.

Peter is a true mountain biking nomad. He’s travelled with his bike to nearly every corner of the world — from the Scottish Highlands to the Andes, from the forests of British Columbia to the deserts of Morocco. But this was his first time riding in Romania, and we couldn’t wait to show him what our mountains had to offer.

Day One — Creasta Porumbelului: The Ridge of the Doves

We kicked off the adventure with a local classic — Creasta Porumbelului, the “Ridge of the Doves.” The morning started cool and clear, sunlight flickering through the beech trees as we pedalled out of the village. The trail climbed gently at first, then steepened into a steady ascent through pine forest.

When we reached the top, the reward was instant. The ridge stretched ahead like a ribbon of trail between sky and valley, rolling across open alpine meadows with views that seemed to go on forever. Peter stopped for a long moment, taking it all in. “I’ve ridden a lot of places,” he said, smiling, “but I’ve never seen anything quite like this.”

The descent was pure joy — technical in spots, fast and flowing in others, with wide-open corners that begged for speed. By the time we reached the bottom, everyone was buzzing with adrenaline and grinning ear to ear.

Day Two — The Long Ride through Păltiniș

Day two was all about distance and discovery. We set out early for a full day exploring the Păltiniș area — a long route connecting the best of the local trails into one epic loop.

The weather couldn’t have been better: crisp mountain air, perfect trail conditions, and sunlight streaming through the trees. The climbs were steady and satisfying, rewarded by long, flowing descents that danced through the forest. We passed through quiet glades, crossed wooden bridges over small mountain streams, and stopped often to admire the views. The highlight came in the afternoon when we dropped into the famous Rollercoaster section — a twisting, rolling ribbon of dirt that had Peter whooping with delight all the way down. “That’s world-class,” he said at the bottom, shaking his head in disbelief.

Day Three — Magura and the Hills of Rasinari

Our final day took us to one of the most beautiful and underrated areas in the region: the rolling hills of Rasinari and the trails around Magura Peak.

The route began with a steady climb through forest and pastureland, passing shepherd huts and curious cows who looked up as we pedaled by. The air was softer, the light golden, and the whole landscape seemed to slow down. At the top of Magura, the view stretched all the way to the Fagaras Mountains — a sea of peaks and valleys bathed in sunlight.

The descent was the perfect finale — a mix of flowing lines, natural rock gardens, and meadow trails that carried us all the way back toward the village. Peter was in his element, carving through the turns and laughing the whole way down. “If I lived here,” he said at the bottom, “I’d never stop riding.”

We finished the trip with a relaxed lunch in Rasinari, sitting outside with local cheese, bread, and coffee. The conversation drifted between trails, travel, and the shared feeling that we’d just experienced something truly special.

The End — and the Beginning

As Peter packed up his bike, the mountains stood quiet in the background, as if waiting for the next ride. For him, it had been a first taste of Romania — three days that combined adventure, culture, and connection. For us, it was a reminder of how powerful these trips can be: strangers becoming friends, trails turning into stories, and moments becoming memories.

Before he left, Peter said, “This won’t be my last time here.”

We believed him. And as the mountains glowed in the late afternoon sun, we couldn’t help but smile — because neither will it be ours.

Two Epic Days with Chris and John in Păltiniș

Every great ride tells a story — about the trails, the people, and the moments in between. Our first trip with Chris from the UK and John from South Africa was exactly that kind of story: two unforgettable days of mountain adventure, world-class riding, and the kind of camaraderie that only comes from sharing the trail.

They’ve pedaled through the wild landscapes of Peru and the lush jungles of Costa Rica — always in search of that perfect mix of challenge, flow, and freedom that defines great mountain biking. When they arrived in Romania to explore the trails around Păltiniș and Rășinari, we knew we had something special to show them.

Day One — Discovering Păltiniș

The trip kicked off under a clear blue sky, the air crisp and cool — perfect riding weather. After a hearty breakfast and the usual round of gear checks, we rolled out toward the forest. The Păltiniș trails were in ideal condition: dry, fast, and grippy, weaving through tall pines and open meadows.

From the very first descent, it was clear that Chris and John were in their element. Chris rode with that effortless British smoothness — always composed, always in control — while John brought his trademark South African energy, attacking every section with a grin and a cheer. The combination made for the perfect pace: fast enough to keep it exciting, but relaxed enough to soak in the beauty of the Carpathians.

We spent the day exploring the best of Păltiniș: flowing descents, tight switchbacks, and punchy climbs that opened up to sweeping views across the valleys. Every stop turned into a photo session and a moment to just breathe in the mountain air.

The highlight came in the afternoon, when we dropped into Rollercoaster — one of the most beloved trails in the region. True to its name, it’s a thrilling ride of perfectly shaped berms, smooth jumps, and rolling flow that carries you from start to finish with a smile plastered across your face. When we regrouped at the bottom, both Chris and John were speechless for a second — then came the verdict.

“That,” Chris said, shaking his head with a grin, “is one of the best trails we’ve ever ridden — anywhere.”

Hearing that from two riders who’ve traveled the world on their bikes meant the world to me.

Day Two — The Ridge Above Rășinari

The next morning greeted us with rain. Soft at first, then steady — the kind of rain that makes you wonder if it’s worth riding at all. But as every true mountain biker knows, sometimes the wettest days become the most memorable ones.

So, we geared up and headed out for the ridge above Rășinari. The trails were slick and challenging, but the misty atmosphere gave the landscape a completely different kind of magic. The forest dripped with rain, the smell of pine was stronger, and the mountains disappeared and reappeared through rolling clouds. The climbs demanded focus, the descents tested our grip, and yet every muddy corner only added to the fun. There was something raw and real about it — the kind of ride that strips away everything except the joy of movement and the connection with the place around you.

At the top of the ridge, we stopped to take it all in. The village lay below, wrapped in mist, and despite the rain, the mood was pure happiness. We were soaked, muddy, and smiling like kids. “This,” John said, laughing as he wrung water from his gloves, “is one to remember.”

By the time we rolled back into Rășinari, the rain had eased and the clouds were breaking apart.

A Perfect Start to exploring with clients… and new friends

When Chris and John packed up their bikes and we said our goodbyes, there was that familiar post-trip feeling — part satisfaction, part nostalgia, and already a hint of excitement for what’s next. In just two days, we’d shared more than trails. We’d shared experiences, challenges, and stories that connect riders across continents.

The Carpathians had once again proven what makes them special: diverse trails, spectacular views, and a sense of freedom that keeps you coming back. And, as Chris and John said to me before leaving: “Romania deserves to be on every rider’s map.”

For us, this trip was a reminder of what mountain biking is all about — good people, great trails, and memories that stay long after the mud is washed away.

Grindelwald Eiger Gravel Epic Route

An epic adventure off-road in Switzerland

Switzerland is the home of adventure and Grindelwald is at the heart of the action! With epic scenery and some of the best off-road trails for cyclists, it’s a haven for both mountain bikers and gravel bikers alike.

This route takes you on a 3-day adventure around the lower meadows and hills of some epic mountains: the Monch, the Eiger and the Jungfrau and to the beautiful mountain Lake Brienz, before heading back to Grindelwald. The JUngfrau Tourism experts suggest a 3-day trip, and we agree with them.

This epic gravel bike route in the Swiss mountians starts and ends in Grindelwald, at the foot of the iconic Eiger and in the shadow of its historic north face. On the three defined stages, you’ll ride through some of the most amazing mountain scenery in the world and stay in beautiful villages. The route runs entirely along official, well-signposted bike and cycle paths, and by using the GPX files on this page, makes the route navigation esy to follow.

Stats each day

Day one: Grindelwald to Murren – 30 km, 1200 metres ascent

Day two: Mürren to Meiringen – 60 km, 800 metres ascent

Day three: Meiringen to Grindelwald – 30 km, 1500 metres ascent

Refreshments & Where to Stay: The Grindelwald and Jungfrau region are well versed in where to stay and what to do. Simply contact their tourism offices and they’ll give you great advice on where to stay and where to eat. Booking the tour itself, then all will be catered for anyway!

Character: Tough and steep, this is a ride for those with experience in the hills and a god level of fitness. However, if you’re ready for the adventure, it is an epic ride!

Route

Day 1

The ride starts in Grindelwald, using cycle route 61 out of the valley and along the black Lütschine to Zweilütschinen. Once here, you change to the Alpine Route 1 to Lauterbrunnen. Arriving at Lauterbrunnen, the second climb begins, as you ride on the signposted bike trail 450 in the direction of Mürren.

From Mittelberg, leave the signposted bike route and ride on an asphalt path along the railway line directly to Mürren. It’s now time to enjoy a car-free, unspoilt panoramic mountain village, sitting at the foot of the Schilthorn and with breathtaking views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau – well worth the gravel grind.

Day 2

Today, you have 60 km to ride and 800 metres of ascending, so it’s aday to take your time and to enjoy the scenery. Of course, you can try to be epic and ride continuously from day one. However, we see that as a foolhardy way of exploring the Alps.

From the village of Mürren, ride back on bike route 450 along small and sometimes steep asphalt and alpine paths via the villages of Gimmelwald to Stechelberg. It’s now time to roll silently into the magical Lauterbrunnen Valley passing by the iconic Trümmelbach Falls. After Lauterbrunnen, you can choose to ride on the right side of the river on forest tracks and easy trails, Alpine Bikeroute 1 (GPS track), or you can ride on the left side of the river and stay on the road.

From Zweilütschinen, bike route 1 leads along the right bank of the Lütschine to Wilderswil and through Interlaken to the northern shore of Lake Brienz. From here, bike trail 451 leads to Brienz on partly paved and partly unpaved paths with constant ups and downs, always with a beautiful view of the deep blue Lake Brienz.

Once in the village of Brienz, it’s a change to the Aare cycle path no. 8 and the final few kilometres of the day , riding quietly along the right bank of the Aare for a much deserved rest and refreshments.

Day 3

Alpine Bike Route No. 1 starts you off today, as we head back to Grindelwald. Along the way, the route cycles past the legendary Reichenbach Falls, before the village of Rosenlaui is reached after a further 400 metres in altitude. If hunger and great food is necessary, then, after a further 100 metres in altitude, the beautiful Chalet Schwarzwaldalp beckons with culinary delights – a place that is taken on the organised ride on the Jungrau website, and a place that we also recommend.

Your route then moves onwards to the highest point of the day, the Grosse Scheidegg, with epic views all around you, before you begin the amazing descent back to Grindelwald, with the mountains standing sentinel all around.

Epic adventures in the Swiss Alps

This route is suggested by our friends at Grindelwald Tourism, and can be accessed in detailed on their website – link here

This route is technical and requires an advanced mountain bike riding technique and trail experience. A good balance with weight shifting to overcome obstacles, step riding, as well as a safe cornering and braking technique are necessary, along with fitness.

Since summer 2018, the mountain bike trail at Lake Bachalp – Grindelwald has been officially signposted. First, however, you’ll have to conquer the ascent from Grindelwald (bike transport is highly restricted on the cable ways in Grindelwald).

One suggestion is to take the road upwards. The asphalt pass road leads to Grosse Scheidegg. It continues on a gravel road to First and Lake Bachalp. Once you reach the top, stop and take in the breath-taking snow-covered peaks of the Bernese Alps and enjoy the reason that you’ve travelled all this way – the best mountain views in the world! Once sufficiently recovered, it’s time to tackle the 13 km descent all the back to town. It is a mix of rock slabs, stepped passages, meadows and woods on the 1,200 metres downhill.

Grindelwald Tourism recommendation

The ascent to the Grossen Scheidegg or First is also possible by bus or gondola. You can also enjoy the sun terrace of the restaurant Waldspitz.

Route Information

Stats: 30.42 km 1,372 metres

Refreshments & Where to Stay: Grindelwald is a toursit centre and has ample options for accommodation and refreshments. As one of the best mountain villages in the Bernese Alps, it’s a great base for a mountain holiday.

Character: Tough and steep, with a technical descent. You need good fitness and good handling skills for this route. The single track descent is testing but amazing.

Route

As mentioned earlier, the cable cars are somewhat restricted for bikes. There are buses however, and these can be used on occasions. The alternative is to take the asphalt pass road leading to Grosse Scheidegg.

This route then continues on a gravel road to First and Lake Bachalp and epic views of the Swiss Alps. The route is well signed and with the GPX and a map in hand, you can enjoy the 13 km descent all the back to town.

Exploring Albacete: Spain’s Quiet Cycling Paradise

Taking Time to Ride New Places

When people talk about cycling in Spain, the same names always come up: Girona, the Pyrenees, maybe the Sierra Nevada. They’re classics for a reason, and popular paces for cyclists the world over. I’ve ridden in each of these amazing places, and felt the warm sun beating down on me, with a cool breeze refreshing my face as I’ve descended the epic climbs that seem to lie in every mountain valley.

However, this summer I found myself pedalling in a place far less famous – and it completely won me over. Albacete, tucked away in Castilla-La Mancha, is an underrated cycling gem that offers stunning scenery, peaceful roads, and a real sense of adventure. It’s a place that quietly exists, seemingly knowing that once you’ve discovered it, you’ll always want to come back for more – and I do.

Cycling Off the Beaten Path

I was there in August, during the peak season, when most tourist hotspots in Spain and elsewhere are overflowing with traffic and long café lines. Not so here. The roads around the small mountain villages were blissfully quiet, the travel affordable, and the hospitality was refreshingly authentic. Instead of queues and crowds, there were olive groves, fig trees hanging heavy with fruit, wild blackberries by the roadside, and even truffles hiding beneath the soil. If I hadn’t been cycling, I would have been foraging and collecting some of this bountiful food and fruit. Yes, it felt like pedalling through a Mediterranean garden with a special pass for the most beautiful areas. My senses felt alive both on and off the bike and I felt alive and ready to explore.

The only downside – and it really was a first-world problem? Finding a decent cappuccino. I learned the hard way that oat or almond milk is much easier to track down than a proper cappuccino with “avena” milk – after a week, I almost quit coffee entirely. Almost… but obviously, not quite!

Rides That Stood Out

One of the most memorable cycling routes took me from Molinicos, climbing up through Puerto de las Crucetillas and over to Peralejo. These are not monster alpine passes, but instead are rolling, gentle climbs through quiet forests, with sweeping views that appear out of nowhere. They lie like ribbons across the Spanish landscape, and the gradients are kind, the tarmac is smooth, and you achieve that wonderfully calm and tranquil feeling of total solitude on the bike – just you, the road, and the whisper of wind through the pines.

Cycle tourism these days is big business, and too many places become filled with too many cyclists, losing that reason why we all headed there in the first place. But here in the gentle, rolling hills of Albacete, I was able to lose myself and to find time to ride and time to rejuvenate my soul.

Another highlight for me, was looping around Embalse de la Fuensanta, a reservoir surrounded by dramatic limestone mountains that stood sentinel and which radiated the sun with the light rock. The turquoise water of the reservoir looked so inviting that we ditched the bikes for a swim – easily one of the most memorable mid-rides stops I’ve ever had.

Seeking Adventure

Not every adventure went perfectly to plan. At one point, convinced we’d found a clever shortcut, we ended up lost. Trust me, this isn’t a regular thing for me – my navigation is usually spot on! However, whilst riding along our not-so-shortcut, after 30 minutes it was clear this was not rideable gravel, and three hours later – sunburnt, dusty, and pushing bikes uphill in 40°C – we admitted defeat! Lesson learned: the long way round is the better option. (You can see the comedy of errors on my Strava route if you’re curious!) I promise you, I won’t send you on the shortcut, if you want to repeat the ride, error free! Although, it may provide you with a real sense of adventure!

Why You Should Go

Albacete might not yet be on the cycling world’s radar, but that’s exactly what makes it special. The landscapes are raw and beautiful, the climbs are friendly but rewarding, and the roads are blissfully free from traffic. Add in warm, welcoming locals and a slower pace of life, and you’ve got the perfect destination for cyclists who want more than just ticking off famous passes.

One aspect of cycling that always appeals to me, is to be able to relax and find myself again. To set myself free as I climb the passes and to feel the wind in my face as I explore the descents and watch the amazing landscapes fly by me at speed – or at a slower pace, where I can press pause and take it all in. Taking time to pause is always good – and riding my Time Scylon in these hills, was just perfect, as the bike and I became one.

If you’re looking for a quieter, more authentic cycling trip in Spain – one where you can ride all day, swim in a reservoir, eat figs straight from the tree, and never once get stuck in a café queue – then put Albacete on your map. Just maybe bring your own coffee beans!

Take to the heights near Lake Garda

There’s history all around Lake Garda, and this legendary route takes you up high to see it in the mountains, as you ride along tracks used by generations, including historic tracks used during the second world war.

Cycling clockwise from Molina di Ledro, we take on the legendary mountain bike route from Ledro via the historic remalzo road – one of the Garda region’s best-loved MTB routes. It’s a tough but rewarding mtb trip into the hills close to Lake Garda, and accessible for cycling tourists wanting to take in the beautiful Italian Lakes area. Good fitness is required, and a good quality bike. The route is on a well used track; however, you do need to be an experienced rider, with a good quality bike and the ability to look after yourself and any mechanicals along the way.

However, once you’re ready, this route is a mountain bike route that will stay in your memory for ever!

Note: This route can also be ridden on a tough and trail-ready gravel bike, such as the 3T Extrema Italia

Character: This is a great challenge, but requires fitness and good bike handling skills, and knowledge of how to fix your bike. If you get an issue, you’re up high and left to your own skills. Take plenty of fluids and snacks, in case the refuses are not available.

Route

The ride starts at the village of Molina de Ledro and follows the Strada del Ponale downhill to the village of Pre de Ledro. At the village, a cobbled mountain road leads off to the right, before you take a gravelled path to Passo Guill.
The gradient gets tougher here, with extensive views of Lake Garda to help you along the way. Eventually, a junction at the Bocca dei Fortini leads you onwards to Passo Nota, where the Rifugio degli Alpini mountain hut is on hand to serve refreshments before you tackle the main climb.
Now, things get tough, as you follow the legendary Tremalzo pass road, constructed by the Italian Army during WWI. The winding trail and tunnels keep you focused, as this epic route continues.
From the 1,200 m a.s.l. at Passo Nota, you reach the high point of the ride at 1,855 m a.s.l., reaching the gallery overlooking the beautiful Italian lakes scenery below Mount Corno della Marogna. Now it’s time to descend, through tunnels and along ribbon winding trails, passing the mountain hut at Passo Tremalzo, before hitting the valley and taking tracks back to the start.
