Why my race bike is also my most comfortable bike

Former international and world-class triathlete, Nadezhda Pavlova knows about performance bikes. After all, she is also a UCI AG rainbow jersey winner in the Gran Fondo TT arena. Riding the TIME Scylon for nearly a year now, it’s been a revelation in how it blends performance with comfort.

For a long time, I believed the same thing most riders do: race bikes are fast, aggressive… and uncomfortable. Yes, they’re perfect for short races, but not for long mountain days or gran Fondo days out in the mountains. Days on the bike that I love to ride and challenge myself on. That changed when I started riding my Scylon frame. I hadn’t expected it to be exactly as it was – I hadn’t ridden a TIME before, so it was all new experiences for me, on every ride and on every climb.

After more than 6,000 kilometers on the same bike — across numerous alpine passes in Switzerland France and Italy; on rough roads, and long endurance rides, I’m thankfully able to say this with all honesty and a sense of personal delight: performance and comfort don’t have to be opposites. Trust me, riding up the Tourmalet isn’t something that you want to experience on a uncomfortable bike! Speed may be your friend – but comfort is paramount to performance!

TIME know this, which is why they spend so much time – pardon the pun – researching and engineering their unrivalled carbon bike frames. Yes, deep in the heart of Europe, this iconic brand have been busy, innovating with and creating unique frames that remain strong and light and responsive. Bike frames that allow comfort and performance in equal measure – but with unrivaled quality.

Feeling ‘at one’ with your bike

Ultimately, for me personally, I wanted a bike that could handle everything I do: the long climbs, fast descents, extensive travel, content creation, and yes, some racing. From the first rides, what surprised me most about the new Scylon wasn’t the speed, but the ride feel. The bike felt stable and precise, yet smooth over imperfect asphalt. It moved with me and allowed me to ride it, rather than the bike dictating. After five or six hours in the saddle, I wasn’t fighting the bike — I still felt in control and confident. That’s when the “race bikes are uncomfortable” myth started to fall apart for me.

A big part of that feeling comes from how TIME build their frames. Instead of traditional carbon layups, they uses a Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) process. In simple terms, this means that their specially woven carbon fibre socks are formed into a frame, then placed into a mold, heated to phenomenal temperatures and resin is injected under pressure, creating very consistent layers with fewer air gaps. The result isn’t just a lighter frame — it’s a more predictable one, and a lighter and stronger frameset. You feel it on the road as a balanced mix of stiffness and vibration control. On long climbs, the bike responds immediately when you push. On rough descents, it stays calm and planted instead of nervous or harsh. And, in the alps, there are lots of rough descents!

Yes, after 6,000 km, this difference becomes even clearer. The frame still feels as stiff and precise as it did on day one. No strange noises, no loss of confidence, no “tired” feeling in the structure. I’ve taken it on mountain passes like Tourmalet and Furka, flown with it multiple times, packed it into bike box, and ridden it in very different climates. That durability gives a special kind of freedom: you stop worrying about the bike and start focusing on the ride.

The best carbon bike frame in the world… I think so!

And so, the key thing is this: what I’ve learned over this season is that comfort isn’t about soft geometry or relaxed performance. It’s about how the frame manages the multitude of forces and impact factors that we throw at it. How it transfers power without beating you up. A truly good race bike doesn’t punish you; instead, it supports you, and that’s exactly what I feel on my Scylon.

So yes, it’s fast. Yes, it’s built for performance. But it’s also the bike I trust for six-hour days, long training blocks, and technical descents. For me, that’s the real definition of a modern race bike: not just something that wins sprints, but something that makes you want to keep riding longer and further. A bike that encourages you to explore your limits, and which matches the criteria that they design engineers looked to achieve when they created the new Scylon model, using techniques more at home in areospace or the motor industry. TIME like to be different though, and their Scylon certainly is. It responds to you and it rides in comfort, allowing you to focus on the ride.

Breaking the myth wasn’t something I planned. It just happened, one mountain pass and one long ride at a time — on a bike that proved that speed and comfort can live in the same frame. A frame that now feels a part of me on those testing alpine climbs, and which will remain as my riding companion – long into the future!

Let me be clear about this: I liked the look of Ale Cycling’s products from the very beginning. In addition to the unique design, with an aesthetic sense, the quality of the products is clearly superior to other brands. It oozes quality from first sight, and is also well finished. Yes, aesthetic elements and finishing are important to women cyclists in particular .

This cold season, I had the opportunity to test some of the latest kits from Ale Cycling, specially designed for women, for the cold periods of the year, with wind, rain and low temperatures. Here in Transylvania it gets very cold and clothing has to perform .

Alé Cycling – Cosmic Women’s Jacket

Cold mornings have a way of testing your motivation to train . The air is chilly, the road is damp and every piece of gear suddenly counts. It’s in this environment that the Alé Cosmic women’s jacket starts to make sense . From the first few minutes on the bike, it feels like a natural extension of your body, rather than an extra layer. It effectively blocks the cold wind, especially on the more exposed sections of the road, while the soft thermal fleece inside maintains a stable warmth without overheating once the pace picks up.

Fit to form

As the ride progresses, the strength of the Cosmic Jacket becomes apparent. When the air is crisp and the roads are glistening with morning dew , few pieces of cycling gear are as indispensable as a pair of trusty cycling tights. On one of those pre-dawn workouts, I slipped on the Alé Klimatik K-Atmo 3.0 tights and instantly felt the difference – these weren’t just your regular cycling shorts, but a piece of clothing specifically designed for those days when you’re going to ride anyway.

Winter warmth & moisture management

From the moment I put them on, it was clear that these tights were serious business. The material wraps around your legs like a second skin, hugging your curves without restricting movement, thanks to an ergonomic cut that minimizes seams and maximizes freedom of movement . The tights are made from a durable water-repellent material – B-Tour DWR – which causes steam and light rain to collect and roll off, rather than soak into the material. Even on stretches where road spray reached mid-legs, the material remained surprisingly dry and breathable, striking a balance between protection and ventilation that many winter garments lack.

But it’s not just about moisture management; there’s also warmth. A soft, brushed inner mesh adds a cosy feel against the skin, helping to trap body heat on cold, damp mornings without making you feel overheated once you put it on. Whether on tougher climbs or more intense workouts, the tights felt comfortable and confident, allowing me to focus on the ride rather than the weather.

One of the key moments that stuck in my mind was when a light drizzle started—the kind that usually soaks regular pants in minutes . With the K-Atmo 3.0 on, I barely noticed the change; the water-repellent treatment did its job, and the fit didn’t feel tight or chafe uncomfortably even after an hour in the saddle. As the sun rose, the reflective details caught the light and helped me feel safer on quieter roads, a small but valuable touch when visibility is reduced.

Comfort & performance

Another subtle but important detail was the seating experience. These bib tights feature a quality integrated pad tailored for long rides, offering enough cushioning to ease saddle pressure without feeling bulky. Combined with the supportive fit and the flat, wide shoulder straps that stay comfortably in place, they feel like a thoughtfully engineered piece, especially for riders who value both performance and comfort on colder rides.

The temperature range here leans toward cool to chilly conditions — somewhere around 0°C to 5°C felt just right, though layering light leg warmers underneath could certainly extend that range if needed.

‘Libertas’ is a simple but hopefully powerful idea, to help in the battle to reduce gender based violence, femicides and coercive behaviour against women in Romania, through the development of a women’s cycling club and a positive community where women can feel empowered, supported and find the space and confidence to ride beyond the silence of their suffering.

Whilst we all live in a modern and supposedly equal world, women in communities all over the globe still suffer in silence, with unacceptable levels of gender based violence, femicides and domestic violence. Here in Romania, gender based violence against women is a problem that is only now being addressed, and which still a long way to go in supporting women and addressing the wider problem within society – that Romanian women are not property and that they can and should be supported through the hidden turmoil they too often suffer at the hands of men.

‘Libertas’ is the Roman Goddess of Freedom & Liberty, and is also Latin for ‘Freedom’, and this project aims to offer all Romanian women a route towards freedom, and a supportive community where they can ride beyond the silence in the company of others, knowing that they can be strong and will be supported on their journey to empowerment.

The ‘Libertas – Ride beyond silence’ project will create a wide geographic cycling programme for women of all ages to meet, ride, gain confidence and to feel supported, as we help them to gain the necessary confidence to take control once more and to change their lives in a positive way. Gender based violence isn’t simply about the physical aspect, either; the mental health aspect through control and coercive behaviour can be traumatic.

Initially, our team based in Romania, plan to set up a series of Libertas rides for women at Sibiu in Transylvania. Hopefully, the success of these rides will inspire others in Romania to set up their own Libertas rides for women.

As the project develops, we want to work in partnership with other national organisations, such as National Cycling Federation of Romania, and the Romanian Police, so that together, we can develop and signpost women to the right organisations and structures that can offer support to women who suffer gender based violence in our society, and give them a feeling of community and empowerment to report their situation safely – to find their own ‘Libertas!’

‘Libertas – Ride beyond silence ‘

Gender based violence in Romania

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a significant issue in Romania – and elsewhere unfortunately – with statistics showing high prevalence rates for both physical and sexual violence. While Romania has improved its legislative framework and implemented strategies like the National Strategy for Preventing and Combating Sexual Violence, challenges remain in implementation and changing social attitudes. The country has ratified the Istanbul Convention, and efforts are underway to strengthen the justice system’s response to GBV, including a focus on multidisciplinary collaboration and data collection.

Romania is now tackling gender-based violence (GBV) by implementing focused policies and establishing support structures like the National Agency for Equal Opportunities which created 10 centers for survivors of sexual violence. However, there is still so much more that can be done.

Whilst some efforts are underway to improve law enforcement and judicial responses through training, too many challenges remain in implementation, data collection, and changing societal attitudes. This is where we can all help to force the speed of change and to educate our communities and say the femicides and gender based violence is no longer acceptable – in silence or in any way! It is time for change – time for ‘Libertas’ – and our rides beyond silence will help in bringing a positive element to those women who are quietly looking for help and support.

The Libertas goals for feminine freedom

The ‘Libertas’ gender based violence project has the following initial goals:

To create a women’s cycling club across Romania that becomes a safe and empowering environment for women to come together and form friendships that develop their confidence;
To set up a series of monthly venues for women only cycling rides, led by qualified ride leaders;
To work with relevant organisations that can support women who are currently suffering gender based violence, risk of femicide or coercive behaviour, and to help to promote their work, and increase the support for vulnerable women;
To build a greater awareness of femicides and gender based violence across Romania, and to help educate people in the right way;
To work with others to reduce the instances of women suffering femicides and gender based violence and coercive behaviour in our communities.

Libertas locations for 2026

As we work with partners to develop this project, we will be setting up a series of monthly ‘Libertas – Ride beyond silence’ rides initially at Sibiu in Transylvania, before hopefully growing the project in other locations across Romania. The idea is to create a feeling of community, where women can join the Libertas Community Cycling Club and ride in a positive and welcoming atmosphere, free from pressure and the untold pain and tears of gender based violence – and with the liberty to let themselves enjoy the company of others without fear of judgement or violence.

Libertas is about creating an environment that empowers women in Romania – and elsewhere – to build confidence and to feel protected and free from the gender based violence and hurtful environments that continue to harm too many women in Romania and around the world. Maybe if this project is successful in Transylvania and Romania, it can work elsewhere – time will tell. From acorns, oak trees grow!

Rebuilding confidence: Learning to cycle can be a powerful experience for survivors, helping them to feel a sense of accomplishment, independence, and pride after a traumatic experience.

Therapeutic benefits: Cycling can provide a sense of freedom and a healthy outlet for stress. It offers a chance to get out of the house, socialize, and reconnect with joy and fun.

Social connection: Group rides and projects in refuges provide a way for survivors to bond with others and build community in a safe and supportive environment.

Empowerment: For some, mastering cycling represents taking back control over their bodies and lives. This can be a step toward regaining a sense of personal power and confidence that may have been lost during an abusive relationship.

Join us at ‘Libertas’ and help us to help women to ride beyond the silence of domestic and family violence. Let’s change small worlds for the better, and in doing so change to world for those women at risk in their everyday lives.

Cycling isn’t just an activity for me – sport in general, has always been a part of who I am. Having not started cycling until I was 31, I’ve been lucky enough to race professionally as part of amazing teams, and to win a Gran Fondo European Championship. More recently, I also won a European cyclocross championship, too. Over the years that I have been cycling – not only at my home in Estonia, but also in Europe and Belgium in particular – I’ve witnessed the beginning of changes for women’s cycling, which still has a long way to go. I’ve raced with and met some truly inspiring individuals, and I get to travel to race, sharing my cycling life with friends and others.

Women’scycling is developing all the time,and I get to witness this first-hand, riding as a member of the women’s pro peloton. Yes, it’s fair to say that I’m still on an exciting 2 wheeled journey – which I’m lucky enough to be able to share with you all, here on the Pedalnorth website.

Let’s see if we can encourage a few more women to join us on the bike and inspire some future champions!

As women’s cycling assistant editor, I’ll be writing and sharing my thoughts about cycling, women’s cycle racing and the wide and varied tapestry of emotions that cycling brings to me. Pioneering Women in Cycling History

More than 100 years ago, bicycles were designed and made for men; but, despite the obstacles faced by women, some choose to persevere and take the reins. At this time, bicycles symbolized women’s change and freedom. This changed how they lived, their mode of dressing, and how they contemplated themselves. It was a dramatic change in self-confidence and perception of their position, whilst there was still a long way to go.

Despite the early cycling pioneers, it was in the 1984 Los Angeles Games, when women contested the first Olympic cycling race. However, even with this long wait for Olympic recognition, real professional cycling in women was not acknowledged until the 1990s. Before the contest, some women were slowly paving the way for the women in cycling sport today, such as going to races and requesting to join the League of American Wheelmen membership. This perseverance has helped the riders of today to continue with the fight for equal recognition with the men; but, why should these battles for equality have to take place – it’s a valid question.Let’s take a brief look at some of the women pioneers, who have worked to get women’s cycling started on the path to modern day recognition.

Susan B. Anthony

was one of the activists who embraced the idea of cycling for women. She saw cycling as one thing that was changing the way of life in women more than other things in the world. In those days, there were no sponsorships, prizes for winners, diversification, or training for female cyclists. Nevertheless, some kept pushing their way into cycling against all odds. Here, we have some of the pioneers of the sport who spearheaded and paved the way for women in the sport in the 19th century.

Connie Carpenter, Los Angeles 1984

Louise Armaindo

This great and strong woman was from Montreal. Louise went from race walking on tracks to the high wheel. Armaindo could race in all games in North America. In 1872, she covered 600 miles in 72 hours which was a new record for America. As the cycling sport became known and young women engaged in it, Louise Armaindo was forgotten. However, her existence is proof enough that you have to be tough to make a living in cycling, especially as a woman.

Beatrice Ethel Grimshaw

She was a travel writer who started her cycling career in 1891. She finished schooling at 21 years old and ran Dublin, Ireland for a journalist career. She became an editor and a student of sports. She would ride her bile when out of the office. She participated in casual century rides. Beatrice completed 210 miles after cycling for 24 hours. Later, she traded her bike to travel where she wrote many books on worldwide exploration.

Kittie Knox

Kittie Knox was from Boston and bought her first bike in the 1890s. She was the first black American to be approved into the League of American Wheelmen membership in 1893. Despite being discriminated against, she continued with the sport and was known for her cycling outfit. She became one of the first women to wear bloomers, taking the first step toward what eventually became the bike shorts that women could wear in public.

Annie Cohen Kopchovsky

She was living in Boston as a Latvian immigrant. In 1894, she left her husband and children to race around the world. She got sponsored when she rode with a sign for the Londonderry Lithia Spring Water Company of New Hampshire. Some argue that she inspired the sponsored jerseys today. In 1895, she returned home with a broken arm having crossed the U.S.

Tillie Anderson

Cissie Colreavy

Cissie Colreavy joined the sport in the 1890s. Her family owned Shamrock hotel which was located in western Australia. Cissie’s mother was a bike race promoter. It influenced Cissie’s love for cycling.
She was the first woman in Australia to wear men’s bloomers while racing instead of skirts. She continued to race and won various competitions.

The “Big Five”

The “Big Five” was a team of bold women who competed amongst themselves and other women in the U.S. in the 1890S. The racers were Helen Baldwin, May Allen, Lizzie Glaw, Tillie Anderson, and Dottie Farnsworth. They were able to prove that women can be competitive and friendly among themselves. In the 1880s, Helen Baldwin and May Allen raced the high wheels before shifting to racing tracks. After a three-year break, Allen returned and became the first professional racer slash mother in pro cycling.

Tillie Anderson

This inspiring woman got a bike in 1894 and would race between 20 to 40 miles before breakfast. She worked as a seamstress during the day and went back to race training in the evening.

Alfonsina Strada

She was the first and only woman to ride one of the three major stage races in cycling when she began in the Giro d’Italia. She entered the race under the name Alfosin Strada and when promoters saw she was a woman, they allowed her to continue. However, injuries and crashes forced her out of the race. Promoters eventually paid her for finishing the race after. Her husband gave her a bike as a wedding gift which helped her race around Europe.

Nora Young

Nora Young was a Canadian racer who almost beat men in a 50-mile race in the 1930s. She participated in other sports like javelin throwing, basketball, and the Olympics. During World War II, her athletic career ended, and she went to Europe as a Jeep mechanic.

The Drive for Equality Continues Today

There have many inspirational women cyclists throughout the ages. They all have their own story that contributes to the history of the sport. Although it remains a vehicle for change, equality in payments and competition is a challenge. But, at its core, the sport remains a testament to how women never give up despite all the hardships they’re forced to endure. When we look at simple things, like Cherie Pridham making the headlines in recent years, as the first World Tour DS woman, it’s a reflection on the continuing battle for recognition. We woman can train as hard as the men, race as hard as the men, albeit with an obvious physiological and physical difference, we’re no less atheletes – but, it seems that we have to prove ourselves and our worth far more. Thankfully, as women, we have an advantage – our mental strength and perseverance.
