Sibiu Cycling Tour 2022 – Prologue
by Robert Thorpe,
Beau Smith & Callum Robinson (Voom Nutrition)
On a reasonably technical prologue course of 2.3 km, riders from around the world tackled the evening racing in historic Sibiu. What was evident was the diversity of bikes being used, which showed the openness of the Sibiu Tour for developing teams, giving them the opportunity to test themselves against the worlds best. And indeed, after the racing was completed, it was Lotto Jumbo Visma and Tim Van Dijke that took the opening honours, as the Dutch team led the way.
The crowds had packed the streets, with the day’s temperatures in Sibiu reaching 31 degrees. Thankfully, the wealth of ice cream stands kept the Voom and Pedalnorth team happy, as they watched the racing and relaxed. The first part of this short but fast course was a reasonable speed affair, with the more technical bikes and riders from the World Tour showing their prowess, as the turn for home then gave some twists and turns to test the handling skills. It was however good to see riders from other teams, such as Matyas Kopecky from Team Novo Nordisk performing well on this dynamic opener, coming in just 5 seconds behind Van Dijke.
Andrei Cojanu was the first Romanian rider home, in 2 min. 54 seconds , and clearly enjoyed the warm evening and short course.
In the old town and city centre, the arts festival was in full flow, showing the vibrancy of this historic place and how its development is embracing not only world class cycling, but also tourism from around the world. Today the racing starts proper, as riders head off into the countryside and the hills.
As for us, we’re starting the day with a video and photo shoot in the mountains, before more ice cream is tested 😉
