MET Helmet Road Vinci MIPS
by Larisa Chinces, Deputy Executive Editor
MET make helmets for some of the top teams in the world. They know their stuff and the research shows this, with technological designs to add safety to comfort and speed. It’s time to take a look at one of their latest lids.
The MET Vinci MIPS helmet offers a great fit for riders, with just enough padding and a decent airflow, thanks to its 16 vents. It’s not just about the number though, it’s how they’re positioned, and MET have researched the optimum position. The design is similar to the MET Trenta helmet, just a bit more chunky in aesthetics; but the Vinci has a lot to offer from technology to design for its mid-range price point.
First of all, it’s good to see that MET has incorporated MIPS. Featuring the MIPS-C2 brain protection system, the Vinci is able to slide relative to the head in the case of a crash, redirecting damaging rotational motion. Whilst none of us wants to crash, we want to be well protected, and MET put lots of work into crash research. You can find more about MIPS by clicking here
For me, the helmet fit is the most important. I need it to be comfortable and easy to adjust, just like the MET helmet is. Due to the thumbwheel adjustment and the fact that the belt runs right the way around the head, it is easy to adjust without causing any pressure points nor discomfort. The thumbwheel also has incorporated red led light in two positions, blinky and still – a small but useful safety feature. There are also four height settings at the rear, plus an opening for a ponytail, just perfect.
The padding is plenty and can be removed easily for washing, meaning that it’ll stay fresh and looking good for longer. Remember, heads sweat, so washing the padding is a bonus.
Sixteen ventilations are just enough too, letting the air flow through pretty well and helping to keep you cool. It also has internal channels to help push air over the top of the head, maximising flow direction. Two of the vents at the front are said to be a sunglasses port, but only while in breaks, not while riding ????. Overall, the Vinci is slightly lighter than the Trenta, has better ventilation, and offers a better fit too.
In conclusion, I like the look and feel of the MET Vinci MIPS and most of all the comfortable fit. It’s a great generous helmet, a good all-round fit, very comfortable, easy to adjust and with the addition of MIPS too. For its price point it’s definitely a winner.
