Take to the Transylvanian Trails

This is an epic route, in the mountains near to historic Sibiu. Paltinis is a superb year-round resort, being a ski centre in the winter, and an awesome mountain bike centre in spring, summer and autumn. The climbing here is tough, but the views and the descents are spectacular. When the riding is over, nearby Sibiu, my home city and World Heritage Site, is waiting for you, for some excellent places to eat and celebrate!

Route Information

Stats  32 km  & 1,161 metres of ascent

Refreshments & Where to Stay

Paltinis is a good resort in the hills, with places to stay and to get refreshments. However, nearby is the medieval city of Sibiu, with a wealth of history, and a great choice of places to stay and eat. It’s a superb base, and also has some great AirBNB  and Booking.com properties.

Character

A long day riding, on excellent mountain trails, this route has some tough climbs, but rewards you with beautiful views and superb descents. Take refreshments, snacks, tools and spare clothing – it’s a mountain route, in an isolated area.

Route

1. The route starts with a 5km climb out from Paltinis, before turning left off the main track in the meadow, and picking up the track that descends into trees.

2. A steep and technical descent to the 12km stage, then leads to a gentle 3 km climb, before the descending continues to the 23 km stage of the route. Care is required in the trees, as some sections are technical and steep. This is a natural mountain biking environment, not the sculptured trail centre blandness of elseswhere – it’s wild and magnificent!

3. The trail then twists and turns its way back down at speed, to refreshments at Paltinis resort. Clean down the bike and then into historic Sibiu for food and fun! 😉

If you follow the gpx and signs in the forests, this route is easy to follow.
