ALÉ PRR VERSILIA LADIES LS JERSEY & BIB SHORTS
by Larisa Chinces, Dep. Executive Editor
Having cycle clothing that crosses over from warm days of summer to cold days of winter is tricky. However, we all know that some winter days can be mild, and that autumn simply isn’t as cold as winter. Add to this, the colder early spring days and you’ve got the reason why ALÉ developed the Versilia jersey and bib shorts. It’s the transition kit that you need between the seasons. Best off all, it’s super stylish. It’s feminine and modern and fits superbly too, which is very important 😉
It’s designed and made on a black fabric surface, with an explosion of colours and different shapes – stylish and modern.
ALÉ set out to combine functionality with unique style with their Versilia jersey, designing a classy and individual garment. The body-mapped construction, along with the performance fabrics for breathability and sweat-wicking, give you a comfortable and high-performance jersey that works well in that temperature range between 12° and 18° – the times of year that I highlighted earlier. The panelled cut and 4way stretch fabrics cling well to my body and still allow good free movement.
It’s a very breathable jersey too, allowing the moisture to wick well when riding hard, while still giving thermal protection. I like to ride hard, but I also want to feelgood and yes, feel nice. I like the soft silk-like material which is so pleasant to touch and a nice feel on skin. To prevent sweating, a lighter fabric is used on arms and sides under arms to have breathability and ventilation while riding. This means that the whole time the jersey is ventilated to the key points.
The collar is high and insulated, but not too high, and the waist is finished with a soft but strong hem that uses a soft silicon band. The 3 pockets are spacious, that can fit the stuff you take while cycling. Eg: a bar, a spare inner tube, a vest, a rain jacket, a banana, a phone, keys etc. It finishes off with reflecting details for better visibility in traffic. Wearing this jersey with the ALÉ winter base layer, I was kept nice and warm 🙂
To sum up then, here’s the final thoughts: the jersey is made of an extremely soft and compact fabric that really does adjust to the body and acts as a second skin. I like that, because feeling good and looking good is important. It has a very high breathability too, so yes, it’s the perfect kit for autumn, and for when the lack of sun makes it a bit colder. If you add leg warmers to the matching bib shorts on warmer winter days too, there’s also an opportunity to ride in the lower valleys during sunny winter days. Alternatively, just pop on a pair of ALÉ winter tights from their wide range of winter options.
ALÉ have produced a stylish and high performance cold weather jersey in the Versilia – so go buy one 😉
Having looked at the Versilia Jersey in another review, lets take a close look at the Versilia Bib Shorts.
These performance shorts for autumn and winter riding are made from a similar technical and thermal fabric as the jersey. Designed by ALÉ by taking inspiration from their R-EV1 bib shorts in Zaffiro Power Lycra, which is opaque, resistant and generates muscular compression, these are the ultimate colder weather performance shorts for women. ALÉ themselves say that the ‘Zaffiro Power Lycra® provides just the right amount of compression, offering multi-direction stretch to giving a close fit to promote blood flow when pedalling. At the thighs, the Leg Comfort System holds the legs firmly, but thanks to the rear wedge shape, gives an improved fit, spreading pressure comfortably and suiting anyone from a skinny climber to a powerful sprinter.’
Having truly 4-way stretch fabric always gives better compression and fit, and these high-end shorts do this well. The compression feel of this highly technical fabric and the close hugging body is so comfy, that even if you are not cycling, you like to wear it 🙂
Looking at the bib uppers, a lightweight open-weave mesh, with super-soft inner face and raw-cut edges, is not only remarkably comfortable but also enhances temperature regulation, ventilation and breathability. It’s high-stretch too and tailored to fit perfectly when in a riding position. This lighter mesh style fabric really does help with air circulation and breathability when working hard and producing sweat. Cold weather clothing needs to keep us warm, but it also needs to allow us to work hard without overheating, and that means different fabrics in different areas.
The straps are wide and strong and merged well into the panels for the lower shorts. What I like in general about Ale products is that they produce this incredible comfy straps. Good stretch and perfect width, with mesh panel on the back for optimal ventilation. The pad is ALÉs 4HF chamois, with an ergonomic design offering luxurious comfort for all your rides. It’s constructed from elastic micro-fibre with padding strategically positioned in the contact points and features a central relief channel to avoid stress on nerve endings. For the best comfort and support high-density 8mm deep 90 kg/cm2 padding is used where it’s most needed in the sciatic and perineal zones.
In use, the pad gives the very best combination of comfort, wicking, breathability and is also incredibly fast drying to ensure the utmost comfort on the saddle… and yes, it does actually work 😉
On the long colder autumn/spring rides, and in rare winter days when it’s warm in the valleys, they perform very well and as expected for a high end brand like ALÉ. I highly recommend this kit, With its super stylish design and quality fabrics, fit and finish. They’re just a really great performance short for colder days.
