Tackling the trails of Transylvania

A rolling Transylvania mountain biking route in the mountains above historic Sibiu, among beautiful forested hills at Paltinis. This natural trail is taken from the 2018 Triada MTB Series, one of the very best in Romania, and it’s an awesome introduction to mountain biking in the Carpathian mountains.

Cycling in Transylvania and Romania is a delight. There is so much history all around you, with spectacular landscapes. Sibiu sits at the heart of cycling in Transylvania and Romania, sitting beneath the Carpathian Mountains, and it has some of the best road cycling routes and mountain biking trails in Romania, and indeed in Europe.

Distance & Ascent: 37 km & 1508 metres of climbing

Facilities: Limited at Paltinis, but ample in nearby historic Sibiu

Route

Start near Paltinis near the tourist and ski area. Head into the forest trails and start some steady descending for 5 km, before the trail turns left and begins a long and winding climb.
The route winds through the hills to the 20km point, where open meadows at the high point bring you expansive views of these beautiful mountains.
A final 6km climb through the forests leads near to the top of the ski lift, and eventually eases as you twist the trails back down to the ski station for coffee and cake.
Now head back into historic Sibiu and enjoy the evening 🙂
