VOOM Rapid Recovery Shake
by Madison Curzon, Tri & Fitness Blogger
My guilty pleasure after a long, hard training session is a milkshake. Particularly the chocolate variety. Not one to turn down chocolate in any shape or form, I jumped at the chance to test the Voom new ‘Rapid Recovery Shake’ in their Belgian Chocolate and Vanilla flavour. The fact that this is fat free is another added bonus.
The shake comes in a biodegradable paper pouch which is resealable to maintain freshness and to stop you from dropping it everywhere (Trust me – if there is a mess to be made, I would probably manage it). Inside the pouch is a small scoop to measure out your portion size – always helpful. I went for 2 flat scoops in 400ml of skimmed milk as recommended and gave it a shake up in a sports bottle.
Having tried recovery shakes in the past, I was concerned that it may be a bit lumpy or powdery, but I was pleasantly surprised that it not only tasted delicious, but it also didn’t have the synthetic feel usually associated with protein shakes. It’s easy to sip down straight after a ride and I have even taken to pre-preparing and popping it into the fridge, so I can gulp it down as soon as I get home from training. That’s got to be a good recommendation in my book 😉
Now for some science; the Voom Rapid Recovery Shake uses a patented blend of Astragalus and Panax Notoginseng (fancy plants), to enhance absorption of the proteins, salts and amino acids by 40%, making your muscles 40% happier (tasty and healthy- a win-win). I don’t usually have the stomach to eat much after a difficult training session, but this recovery shake is definitely very palatable and helps you feel less fatigued and on the mend in no time. Training for triathlon has been a new experience for me and this recovery drink has been extremely welcome, helping me to perform and to recover.
Best of all, did I mention – it’s chocolate flavour and that’s a bonus 😉
Maddy will be writing about her triathlon training as a new recruit to the sport, adding to our team of triathletes at all levels, led by Nadezhda. She will also be testing more great products for us here at Pedalnorth, to help guide you to the right choice. You’ll also be able to follow her exploits soon on her own website, which is coming later this year.
