THE BENEFITS OF NUTRITION BARS

A Middle Aged Cyclist on Voom
It’s hard changing old habits when you’re a cyclist in your mid-50s. You get into patterns and a routine that includes favourite items. For instance, when I was climbing and teaching climbing years ago, I’d always carry Mars Bars in my climbing jacket chest pockets, ready to just grab one if I was in need of a boost in the mountains. Whilst friends were using their own chosen brands, I simply couldn’t climb without an emergency Mars… I know, nonsensical. Looking back though, it shows that even in those early days, I recognised the need for a quick energy boost and, during the spring and summer of 2020 I’ve been using and testing the Voom “Pocket Rocket” energy bars and their super tasty “Recovery Fudge” protein bar. Best of all, they’re more than a replacement for the Mars Bars and I’ve seen my power levels maintained on both long rides and shorter but harder rides.
As for the Recovery Fudge bars, they’re so good and tasty that I have to call upon all of my restraint powers, to stop me from simply grabbing one for their taste! Yes, this mid-50s former climber and athlete and would be cyclist has succumbed to the Voom nutrition bars and no ride will ever be the same again.
What we often fail to realise as older athletes is that, whilst we’re not competing anymore, nutrition is just as important if we are to maintain our fitness and health and to keep enjoying being active for longer. As I’ve highlighted already, these great little nutrition bars from U.K. based brand “Voom” are superb in making sure that I’m able to give 100% effort for 100% of my rides. I’m still competitive, I can’t help it. Yes, my wife giggles at it sometimes, knowing that I’d rather drop and collapse than give in or lose ground. My aching body often pleads with me to remember my age, but thankfully Voom have stepped in and help me to still live out a few dreams.
The key thing with any energy bar is to take it at the right time. If you’re totally spent, then it’s already too late. The best plan is to take small a amount at regular intervals, keeping your energy topped up like an engine. And, if you feel as though you need that extra boost, increase the piece and fire up the Quattro! How do these great little bars from Voom work – time to take a closer look I think…
The Lime & Lemon flavoured “Electro Energy Pocket Rocket” provides the perfect amounts of electrolytes to replace those lost in sweat, working together with your fluid intake to keep your body in balance. It fuels your body with the fast-acting glucose contained in this high carb sports bar, again keeping your energy levels topped up and allowing you to go stronger for longer. It’s got a great sweet taste too, is not too hard and is easy to chew and swallow on the go.
The “Pocket Rocket Beta Blast” bar is filled with glucose and caffeine, developed as a pre event/ ride boost to give you that lift. It contains: 2g of beta alanine*, which is ideal for use in high intensity work, and 150mg of caffeine to give a mental and physical boost. This high energy bar is developed to be taken before you ride, to give you a kick start. As well as a pre ride bar, I’ve been using it as a halway ride rest boost after a coffee stop, to give me that necessary energy boost after the halfway halt and it’s been superb used in this way.
The “Caffeine Kick Energy Bar” does exactly what is says and has been a Godsend at tough points in rides, topping out on steep climbs or needing that final kick. It definitely does provide that necessary mental and physical boost, containing 40g carbohydrates and 175mg of caffeine with a fatigue-resistant effect. This bar in particular has been a key element in making sure that I’m more able to finish rides with better physical and mental well-being, meaning also a very welcomed and useful performance increase during my testing of these bars.
We’ve saved the best to last though and the “Voom Recovery Fudge” bars are simply scrumptious. It’s almost a pleasure suffering on a ride, with the knowledge that once home I get to open up a bar of recovery fudge. This is the Voom brand information and science behind the bar:
• Fast-acting, delicious recovery on-the-move or at home.
• Promotes recovery and aids muscle repair.
• Protein bar packed with 10g protein from whey isolate.
• Optimum carbohydrates to replenish muscle glycogen.
• MCTs for an alternative energy source and endurance booster.
• Carbs and protein together enhances uptake of both macronutrients.
All that I can say is that I’ll never look at a Mars Bar again! The Voom “Recovery Fudge” bar is beautifully soft and fudge and tasty and… well, you get the picture. Best of all, as a joint nutrition plan, these 4 Voom nutrition bars all work in their own special way. Ultimately, they prove that even a mid-50s cyclist can benefit from the Voom factor, developing a truly beneficial nutrition schedule for your riding, and in the process keeping the smiles for longer.
*Beta alanine may cause a tingling sensation, which is perfectly normal. Do not consume more than four bars per day. This product is not recommended for anyone under the age of 16 or pregnant women.
