VOOM NUTRITION FOR CYCLISTS
An ordinary MAMIL on nutrition
Let’s look at the basic facts first; I’m approaching 54 years of age; yes, I was once an athlete and climber, but now I’m happily cruising into comfortable middle age and I like a ride with coffee and cake. I don’t use Zwift or a fancy trainer or watt bike, but I do still ride the rollers and often do so while watching a movie or a climb on YouTube. Fundamentally though, Chris Froome has nothing to fear from me, so what difference could good nutrition and hydration products make to an ordinary guy like me.
VOOM is a young and vibrant brand from the U.K. and it’s one that has its base firmly in endurance sports, with triathlon, fell running and cycling being sports that the brands key people participate in at a high level. There’s also some good science behind what they do, with their own scientist within the brand team. All sounds good so far then.
I’ve been using the VOOM energy bars and hydration drinks on all rides for about 8 weeks or so. I ride or train about 4 times a week and I’d say it’s a reasonable enough time to notice a difference. Firstly, the taste test, as we all like nutrition products that satisfy our taste buds. The VOOM bars vary from recovery fudge options which are awesome and very tasty, to sugary style energy options in a variety of flavours, giving you a good boost on the tough climbs of the Yorkshire Dales. Personally, I really like the recovery fudge bars, and find that they are easily digestible on rides and keep my energy levels topped up nicely. On a tough and long ride, you can use around 2 bars per hour, so making sure that you get it right is critical. For me, 1 bar an hour or so is usually sufficient and I’ve definitely noticed a difference. My energy and power levels are being better maintained on rides whilst using VOOM bars, meaning that I feel better and it’s more fun.
In terms of the hydration powder, I genuinely am blown away. It’s a smooth and easy tasting drink powder, and it’s been a revelation for me. I’ve been managing quite a few improved route times, even heading back from the Dales last week at over 21mph average for the last 6 miles. Trust me, for a cake and coffee shop rider, that’s quite impressive. Using the drink powders on the rollers, where a good 1 hour session produces lots of sweat and fluid loss, the VOOM hydration powder has meant that I’m finishing sessions less tired and actually aching less too… and still able to speak!
I’ll be continuing to test out VOOM this year and seeing what the longer term benefits are. Larisa will be writing more detailed ‘athlete perspective’ reviews, but for the middle aged rider who’s simply looking for something that helps you keep riding longer and stronger and enjoying it more, VOOM is definitely worth taking a look at.
