Stylish performance bib shorts from German brand Biehler ,tested in the South of France by Diane – are these shorts as good as they look – read on and find out 🙂
Biehler like to design modern cycle clothing that also perfroms at the highest level. Riding in the south of France is uncompromising, with steep hills and a hot sun, so kit needs to work well. And, as a women, it also needs to look good – so let’s take a look 😉
These Neo Classic Ultra-Light bibs from German brand Biehler are at the cutting edge of technicity in cycle clothing. The company have used all of their knowledge from pro team support and development, producing an absolutely awesome bib short.
They’re extremely lightweight and have a uv-protection of 50+, and are designed and cut with a pro team race position in mind. Biehler have used the very best aerodynamic lightweight fabrics, and focused on strength, elasticity and compression, so that the bib shorts are not just worn, but that they actually help the cyclist too, forming a second skin on the legs.
How does this work in practice – very well indeed actually. Taking them out on some epic rides, you immediately feel like you want to ride, and the legs are looked after along the way, with that ‘comfortably close fit’ effect. At the hems, the bibs are kept tight and in place by their own BLR Powerband anti-slip technology, which works like terraband, but which is without a doubt the toughest and strongest bib edging I’ve come across – superb work here Biehler. The quality of this edging is totally awesome.
And, when you’ve ridden hard and the moisture has been coming, Biehler have thought about this too, using antibacterial mesh on the upper back area and the straps. All of the materials used are high end 4 way stretch and super strong. On test, we’ve pulled at them and they simply hold tight and return to form, which means that when you wear them, they fit like a glove …or a well-designed pair of bib shorts. If they were a car, they’d be a turbo charged Audi Quattro.
Finally then, the plain black styling is complimented with subtle BLR branding and some neat reflective strips to the rear of the legs, meaning that they go with all the jerseys in the range, and with any other jerseys that you may have.
In terms of the pad, it’s a multi density air cell, maximising comfort and ventilation on the hottest of days and on the longest of rides. Biehler simply do things very well indeed, and these shorts, whilst at the premium end of the market, will serve you well and last a long time.

Biehler are at the cutting edge of technicity and design in cycling clothing. They seem to be constantly striving to produce even better garments, that can perform at the highest level and in the toughest conditions.
Their lightweight Malibu windproof jacket is a great example of the Biehler approach to cycle clothing, being super technical, super strong, a super cool design and fitting well with other garments across the current range.
The lightand top quality material is tightly woven and does the windproofing job well, also keeping a light shower at bay when required. And, for the wicking and breathability, Biehler have used their mesh based cloth to the side panels, under the arms and across the rear shoulders. A heavier cloth at the front is complimented by lighter sleeves that are cut tight and shaped for racing, along with the form fitting overall design.
There’s a large zipped pocket to the rear, in which you can either fold the jacket or keep a few goodies.
I also love the super cool gradient colours, with the soft blue merging into the bright reds, creating a modern and stylish cycling canvas.
The collar is cut high to help keep the winds away, helping you to perform in all conditions. Best of all, the close fitting cut means there’s no flapping fabric, just a sleek and stylish cyclist.
Price wise, this is a high end garment, but we feel it’s strong, well put together and very stylish, and it’s stood up to some harsh testing here in the Yorkshire Dales – well done Biehler.
A lightweight, race fit, ultra technical jersey from German brand Biehler, designed for pro level racing or for just having a great ride in the very best gear. This is the ultimate technical race garment for spring and summer.
Whatever anyone else says, style is also important, and this is a super stylish modern design that looks the business, while keeping the rider ultra comfortable.
When we look at a what a high performance jersey requires, the list is complete on this terrific short sleeved offering.
Biehler have used a heavier weave lycra at the front, but still light, to maximise performance while still keeping the cold wind out, and it does exactly this. To the rear is a light weave mesh material to help breathability and moisture wicking, and this is complemented on the side panels, with an even lighter mesh weave, that is continued to the sleeves. The fully constructed sleeves are formed from an elasticated cloth that clings tightly and aids aerodynamics. Biehler even tested this jersey in a wind tunnel in order to maximise the design.
In use it fits perfectly and performs like a second skin, which is the intention of the design on this high performance jersey. And, despite the lightweight nature of these superb technical materials, they’re super strong and stretchy, meaning that it makes you look and feel like a cyclist.
To aid the dedicated rider even more, there’s a new sleek pocket design, with sloped access on the outer two pockets, so that items are quickly retrieved. The collar is likewise cut low and tight to the lower neckline.
We’ve tested this jersey here in the Yorkshire Dales, around France and elsewhere. It’s been ridden in the sun, in the rain (where it dries quickly), and we’ve given it the multiple wash test.
Our result – it’s a jersey that deservedly sits at the high end of performance, and it’s a super stylish design for both men and women. The bright base colour is subtly complimented with blended shades of blue pink and purple in soft merging galactic theme. It simply oozes quality and style and is definitely an eye catching winner on the roads.
Biehler work closely with UCI riders, and the trickle down technicity is beginning to show. Knowing the brand well, and the great team involved, this jersey is a winning example of greater things to come from this European brand.
With bib tights it’s not just the pad. Yes, as we always say here ‘the pad is critical’, but the general cut, fit, the compression, and the warmth is also crucial. Otherwise you’re going to spend a very long day draped in something that is baggy, saggy, cold and basically uncomfortable. Biehler are cyclists themselves, so know about this, and have come up trumps as usual with their Thermal Matrix offering for winter. They’re so proud of them that they’ve put a big B on the rear too! And rightly so, because these are top quality butt huggers for your winter riding.
When you’re wearing bib tights, you don’t want to feel like a bad example of a fashion victim. You just want to ride in comfort, and know that you look as good as you feel. We think that Biehler have achieved it here. There’s more panels on these bibs than tours won by Bernard Hinault, and lord knows that fella could ride! They’re well designed and well cut, to ensure that they cling to you — the shape that they show is not the fault of Biehler I’m afraid!
Biehler describe the material as Thermocouple Super-Roubaix material with double-layer windstop function in the front area. All we know is that it works very well. On some very cold night mountain bike rides over the Dales, these bibs have left me feeling very snug indeed. Not too warm, as that’s a bad thing when you get pedaling hard’ but just the right temperature to keep you smiling.
In terms of the hard work side of things, when you start to sweat, the variety of material thicknesses ensures that you’re firstly not too restricted in your movement, and secondly, that the moisture created is moved away from you in the right manner – and on some of the steep and rocky night ascents, I did indeed create some moisture.
The material is also super stretchy and strong, meaning that it moves with you. The compression properties are superb in the leg area, where I counted 6 panels on each leg, with a variety of materials used; clearly designed to help you move freely with the articulated knee, keep you warm, and to keep those muscles working for as long as possible. It’s tough material too, as I found out with a wet leaves tumble on a night road ride. Picking myself up and getting back onto the bike, the bibs were undamaged, whilst my pride was dented!
The straps are extremely strong, being made of the same high quality Roubaix material, meaning that you’re kept warm on the chest and back too; and Biehler have sewn a neat little radio / Ipod pocket onto the back. Stitching is flat locked and built into the overall design and styling, as the image to the left shows. Down at the ankles you’ve got tough zippers, and a touch of reflective material, finished off with a quality griper to hold things tight.
The pad itself is a long distance one from this German brand, meaning that it’ll do its job all day long, and indeed it does so superbly. I loved it on some steep trips out to Wensleydale and Swaledale recently. It’s described as ‘Carbon 4 multi chamber’, which I guess means it has several areas of varying thickness, which it does. It’s nice and thick under the sit bones, has a small section of thick padding where required at the front, and folds around you neatly with thinner padding elsewhere, meaning that you don’t look like you’re wearing a nappy down your pants. It also does its job very well in terms of soaking up moisture.
Wearing these tights in varying conditions, including some sleet on the top of the moor recently, the leg areas kept me as dry as necessary and extremely warm. The compression was, as indicated earlier, really superb. My legs simply didn’t need telling to ‘shut up!’ They were cosy and happy to keep turning the cranks, and on a cold winter ride that’s what we ask for I guess.
In terms of price, these currently retail a touch over £100, which we feel is excellent value. How do they compare with others we‘ve tested? They’re at the top end of the table, and will leave any cyclist happy that they put a pair into their own cycling wardrobe. Time then to add these to your cycling wardrobe and keep riding outside during the colder periods where nature produces some beautiful scenes during the crisp cold days of the year, and it’d be a shame to miss them!
We were very lucky with this review, with Biehler sending us the upgraded version of these bibs from their custom ranges. Now the standard Biehler gear is fantastic, and these upgraded shorts are absolutely superb – they truly are.
Design wise, we were sent a black and white Aztec style, that matched the trim on the Platzregen waterproof jacket and shorts range from Biehler, keeping us super stylish and modern. Fabric quality is ideal, with the usual mix of fabric weight and strengths that we’ve come to expect from Biehler. The use what they call Endurance Power Lycra in these shorts, which in essence has great compression qualities, dries quickly, as we’ve found in the Yorkshire Dales, and beads water really well too.
.
They use lighter lycra in key areas, with great wicking properties, saving the heavier materials just for the harder wearing spots, and for areas of the shorts where you need to keep the wind at bay. These are definitely a short made for the keen racers out there, but which will ensure great comfort for the recreational cyclists to, who wants to wear the best kit that they can.
The 4D Airmesh Ultra pad upgrade is for long distance rides, and we tested it to the full, with some epic climbing days in the saddle, and it was a truly comfortable seat; well formed, not too large, with the right mix of thicknesses in all the right places. The numerous compression panels helped with the overall fit of the bibs, and a thick powerband on the legs not only tidied up the design, but also ensured there was no movement, also adding some extra compression to help the guns out.
Mesh uppers are second to none, super stretchy and strong; retaining their shape and holding you firm. Biehler have added a pocket to the side, allowing you to either fit a radio unit or an ipod!
There is genuinely nothing bad that I can say about these bibs; they are so well thought out and well made, with top quality materials and finishing all around. Price wise, they range from just under 100 Euros for a single pair of custom bibs, to less than 65 Euros if you get the club together and order 100 pairs; and to be honest, you won’t find a better pair of club race bibs at that price.
Performance on the road has been great, right over the Autumn, Winter and early Spring. On warmer days they’ve allowed me to breath and sweat in relative comfort, and when it’s rained, they’ve dried off quickly, and been comfortable in the wet. When used with the Biehler warmers and a base layer, I’ve never felt cold, even on some bleak frosty trips out. As a metaphor, they’re the Audi A4 Avant Alltrack bibs; good for all occasions and all your days out in the saddle, coping with everything you can throw it them. So go tell your mates down the cycling club and get some ordered.
Biehler developed these awesome shorts from their experience with the UCI pro teams and it shows. At all times of the year, worn alone in spring or summer, or with warmers in autumn or winter, they’re just an all-around great item of cycling kit.
They’re great shorts that go with most of the current Biehler range, and come in for both men and ladies.
These bibs are a great example of the trickle down advancements, and are super comfortable on both long and short rides. Due to the underestimated styling too, these shorts go with lots of the jerseys in the new range, meaning that you won’t have to fork out lots of money for different colour shorts. Time to take a look at the technical bits then…
The multiple panel race cut is made in the main from their high tech Schoeller fabric, which is extremely strong and stretchy, and in use has superb compression. It fits tightly and makes you feel like a true pro racer, with the sleek black design being finished of with subtle red and blue trim on the legs. The extra wide terraband on the legs means that they stay firmly in place and add to the overall compression effect of the shorts. The technical material chosen by Biehler also provides UV protection of 30+, which whilst not often used in the Dales, will be in sunnier places!
In terms of the uppers, Biehler have opted for a tough and highly breathable black mesh, which stretches nicely and whilst strongly elasticated, it doesn’t pull into the shoulders. How does it all perform then? It’s truly excellent and can’t be faulted.
The mesh allows for excellent air circulation, as does the lighter weave of 4 way stretch fabric used elsewhere. It’s simply a well thought out pair of bib shorts.
I’ve worn these shorts in wind and rain and they dry out nicely, staying firmly in place without rubbing. I’ve also worn them on warmer days where I haven’t overheated either, and the finely woven mesh back, does its job of allowing me to breathe and wick away moisture very well indeed.
Now for the pad though – that most critical element. Biehler never scrimp on the pad, and these are no exception. It’s a multi-density pad for longer rides as expected, but it’s really slim, meaning that it merges nicely into the short and won’t make your bum look big! Eating too much will, but don’t blame Biehler for that! All stitching is of course flat-locked and the shorts wash well and should last a long time.
As I said, I’ve also been wearing them on colder rides with some thin running leggings underneath, just to keep the wind off the legs, and the bibs still perform superbly, helping to hold the leggings in place.
On spring time sunny rides in the Dales, they’ve been totally awesome and are a bib of choice for me these days, with the superb compression, fit and all day long comfort. This is definitely a buy that you won’t regret, from this stylish German brand.
German brand Biehler say that there are 5 different technical materials used in their pro level Fink bib shorts, and I can see this. They’re a well thought out, compression bib short, made for those who want to get the most out of their cycling.
Multiple well cut panels ensure that the strong 4 way stretch materials fit you closely and don’t move about, meaning no rubbing and chaffing. The upper leg panels are particularly strong and stretchy, with excellent compression qualities provided from the hard wearing powerlycra fabrics, with a lighter technical weave as you go up the bibs, towards the evo mesh straps. There’s even a pouch fitted in the back of the straps, so that your race radio is dealt with.
The legs are held firm with a wide powerband, rubberised just enough on the inside to ensure that fitting is firm too. The last thing any cyclist wants is the bib shorts riding up and moving around, and this is well dealt with by Biehler.
Moving to the critical area of the pad, as always, Biehler have chosen a quality Carbonium 4D layered and sectional chamois, ideal for even a long day on the hills, and great for soaking up an6 moisture when riding in the heat of summer. It’s light for the performance provided though, and is extremely soft. All stitching is flat-locked to ensure no rubbing, and shows off the quality that Biehler put into all their garments.
These are a standard black bib short, with minimal colour trim, in the shape of subtle Biehler branding, meaning that they go with several jerseys from the Biehler range; this is always useful for maximising. It’s in your cycling wardrobe, and the bibs are hardwearing enough to last a good few seasons.
In use, we’ve used these in late winter, with leg warmers, and they’re super warm and quick drying. When the rain does fall, the bibs stay in pales and repel light showers, also drying well after a good shower. They’re also comfortable and reasonably breathable on a warm spring or summer day too. Climbing hills is a joy with these bibs looking after the comfort elements, and were more than happy to recommend them to any rider.
If you have only one pair of bib shorts, these Fink bibs from Biehler should be on your list, and will help you to maximise both style and performance, at a reasonable price point.
