Cycle Tourism Locations & Routes

Our favourite cycling tourism holiday spots

Cycle tourism is on the increase, serving 44 billion euros to the European econony alone. Thanks to people changing their outlook on life post-pandemic, it will continue to increase over the next few years, as people look for collecting memories, not possessions. Life is an adventure, and we want cyclists to have every opportunity to find the best adventures on 2-wheels, all over the world. Pedalnorth aims to be one of the best cycle tourism websites in the world, providing accurate and detailed information to help cycling tourists to plan the best cycling holidays.

Many of our team already work within the cycling industry across Europe and elsewhere. Through our vast global network of writers, we’re building up a great network of useful cycle tourism guides, and travel companies to take care of you. And, if you simply want help to plan your very own special cycling bikecation, then our detailed routes and blogs will help to set you on your way!

We regularly visit the best cycle tourism locations all over the world – especially Nadezhda, with recent trips into the Dolomites and elsewhere in Europe – and we’ll be adding to the database of advice on this section of the website in the future.

Cycle Tourism in Europe

In particular, Italy is a favourite cycle tourism location for us, and Nadezhda has been exploring it in depth this summer; along with earlier trips in the year to Andorra and elsewhere. Along with Romania and the Transylvania region – another superb bikecation location – with sun and spa hotels to soothe you, travel on 2-wheels is a key focus for us here at Pedalnorth.

For 2026, we will be working closely with TIME Bicycles and creating lots more great cycling tourism destinations, as part of a ‘TIMe to Ride’ initiative. With so many places, such as the TdF roads of the Yorkshire Dales, mainland Europe and the Alps, the little known mountains of Bohemia, and Barcelona and norrthern Spain. We plan to explore far and wide, as we search for the best roads and hotels for your own TIME travelling adventure on 2-wheels.

CHECK OUT OUR FAVOURITE VACATION IDEAS

There are some amazing cycle tourism locations to explore – on on road or mountain bike – if you have a spirit for adventure. We’ll be developing this section with partners, hopefully bringing you some amazing offers to help you on your travels. All you need is to set your spirit free!

For cycle tourism holidays with style!

Riding The Classics – La Flèche Wallonne

This is the ultimate cycling challenge in Wallonia, in the beautiful Belgian region of Spa. I rode the heroic 215km route in 2018, taking in the famous climbs of Stockeu, Wanneranval and Rosier and I can promise you breathtaking views and great satisfaction when you add this classic to your personal palmarès.

Amstel Gold Race

With its narrow roads, dozens of short, steep climbs and constant twisting and turning, the Amstel Gold Race spring classic opens the trilogy of Ardennes classics. I rode the full 240km route in April 2019 and the finish up the Cauberg (12%), past hundreds of cheering spectators was truly breathtaking!

Stoneman Trail Mountain Bike Challenge

If you’re a lover of mountains and adventure and you ride a mountain bike, then you’ll love the Stoneman Trail in the Dolomites. The route sits neatly in the mountains in the north of Italy and briefly crosses the border in Austria. With a distance of over 100km, this mountain bike challenge has a number of days in which to complete the ride, visiting certain checkpoints along the way, so that your ride can be verified. It’s a challenge and a tough one, but ultimately it’s up to you.

Summer Cycling in a Pandemic

It’s summer, but it’s not really summer. Yes, the sun is high and warm, but we simply can’t enjoy it in the way that we want to. Our writers were supposed to be competing in and writing about the legendary Trans Alp mountain bike race this year - but covid travel restrictions put paid to it.

Mont Ventoux with Diane Vilarem

Mt Ventoux? The legendary climb. For whatever reason everyone kept talking about it. “Have you ridden Mt Ventoux yet? It’s awesome” If you google famous Col’s in France this one always pops up high up on the list. I had to find out why! Could it be even harder than the holy grail of the French Riviera - Col de la Bonette?

Atlas Mountain Race Part 2

The Cascade de Tizgui sounded idyllic for an early morning food stop, but the river was a trickle and the café not yet open! A few of us had come together by this point, all looking forward to the momentary pause. The way out was a steep hike-a-bike up the access steps, arms feeling almost useless at lugging the loaded bike after days on the trail.

Atlas Mountain Race

From mountain passes to the sea, following a route far from the tourist trail, discovering the more remote parts of Morocco’s backcountry. The Atlas Mountain Race resonates all the creativity of the minds behind the now infamous Silk Road Mountain Race. As with the SRMR, wise planning and a sense of being able to deal with remote riding would count just as much as physical ability, although the temperatures turned out to be warmer than predicted - a nice bonus.

Capoliveri Legend Cup

Yesterday’s journey to my first crack at a UCI Marathon Series started about fifteen years ago, after seeing Miguel Martinez solo to a marathon win on Eurosport, having ditched his punctured back tyre and ‘rimming it’ from about 5km out. I’d been an armchair fan of Cape Epic and loved the footage of the dust covered athletes racing MTB’s in dramatic landscapes. I’m in my fifties. I still want to be that man. Tragic I know.

Abbeys and Climbs Bike Route

This is an unbelievably beautiful ride through rolling meadows, taking in steep climbs and fast descents on tree lined roads. History is around every corner, with abbeys and castles and country houses. Helmsley serves superb cake and coffee too, and is an ideal holiday base.

Costa Blanca MTB Stage Race

Over the last thirty five years of cycle racing, I’ve often considered my peers and their contentment at riding the same disciplines, indeed the same races, year in year out. Each to their own and all that, but it’s not for me. It’s probably a Myers-Briggs personality thing. Firstly, I like new experiences; secondly, as a very average amateur athlete, I have never really found a discipline that has offered fame and fortune. Riding the same races over and over again holds little appeal.

London Fixed Gear

I’d better open up by saying that I wasn’t on a drug crazed trip in our capital city. No, I’d simply gone down to London to spend time with our son, a photographic artist who lives in the south of the city. Yes, a man after my own heart, whose apartment is filled with bikes and bike parts, all fixed gear machines, including a folding one! He has other bikes... numerous at the family home, but London is for riding real - and that means fixed gear.

Cormet de Roselend France

Sitting at an altitude of 1968m the Cormet de Roselend connects Beaufort(744m) in the Beaufortain valley in the west and Bourg-Saint-Maurice(840m) in the Tarentaise Valley to the east. The climb has a rich TDF history. It was first featured in the 1979 Tour de France and ten times since. In 2019 the climb was cut from the tour as a mudslide rendered the climb impassable. It returns in 2020 for stage 18 and just happens to follow our preferred route over the Cormet!
